May God reward you in your great generosity this Christmas to your parish and community.

SACRED HEART PARISH IS SEEKING A DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Sacred Heart Catholic Church has an opening for a full-time Director of Music. The successful applicant will work

as a vital part of the parish staff team to bring the parish vision of ‘Inviting Everyone to Passionately Live the

Gospel’ to realization, specifically through the work of sacred music. Tasks include coordinating music to enhance

the liturgical services of the parish, including selecting music, playing the organ and piano for liturgies, directing

choirs, coordinating cantors and accompanists, and maintaining the pipe organ and piano. A full job description

can be found at sacredheartaberdeen.net/employment-opportunities. Interested candidates are asked to send a copy

of their resume and an accompanying cover letter to Fr. Mark Lichter, Pastor of Sacred Heart,

at [email protected], or by mail to 502 2nd Ave SE Aberdeen, SD 57401.

Merry Christmas! We continue the celebration of Christmas Day! We are in the octave days (8 days) that we celebrate the Incarnation, the Nativ-ity, and the Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ as one day. This weekend, it is appropriate that we celebrate the Solemnity of The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. And the eighth day falls on the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. All of these solemnities center in on one of the most incredible gifts of God; “The Word Made Flesh and Dwells Among Us.”

Coming from a large family, I have a great deal of love for the family and in turn supporting the gift of fami-ly life. As a priest and pastor, I hope that as a parish we can do what it takes to strengthen our families. I have said it many times, as the family goes, so goes the Church. We are only strong in our parish life as our families are strong. As we celebrate Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, the Holy Family, may we look to them as a model of family life and ask them for help in our own families. The family is the first place we receive the gift of life through the marital embrace. It is the first place we are taught to love, to forgive, to say I am sor-ry, and to learn the lessons of life. Many popes have talked about the family being the “First Church” or the “Domestic Church”. Some have talked about the family being the first school of faith and vocation. It still boils down to the family being the single most important cell in our society. Please pray that we have strong and faithful families at Sacred Heart Parish.

One of the concerns that I have often heard in the parish is how we can better serve the youth and the elderly. We have tried to center in on the youth, religious education, and adult faith formation, by hiring Thomas Eskro as the Director of Evangelization and Discipleship. To address the issues of our elderly, we have re-cently hired Chiara Wang to help with homebound ministry and assist with the different ethnic groups in the parish.

We need the wisdom of our elderly and we as a parish need to build up and support those who are sick or homebound. The reality in our culture today is that our families are more spread out and many family mem-bers have left the Catholic faith. Some of our elderly have fallen through the cracks and no longer have a connection to the parish. We need your help in identifying those that are long time members of Sacred Heart Parish or even daily Mass attendees who have not been seen for awhile. We all need to be attentive to those around us and to let the parish office and Chiara know if there is someone we need to visit. It can even be a neighbor that you haven’t seen for a while and you know they are Catholic. We hope to build up our home-bound ministry through the leadership of Chiara and more volunteers to reach out to those in need. This is part of building strong families of faith in the parish. God bless you! Fr. Mark
