**** FROM THE PASTOR ****

“First Sunday of Advent”

My dear sisters and brothers, Advent is the beginning of the Church’s Liturgical Year. Advent begins the cycle of salvation history

that is celebrated throughout the Church Year. It takes us through the anticipation and waiting of the Old Testament for the coming

of the Messiah to the wonderful stories leading to the birth of Jesus on that first Christmas. The Christmas Season tells the story

of the birth of Jesus and the beginning of his life and ministry.

I invite you to keep in mind two words that are at the heart of our Advent Season this year. The first comes from our Gospel today

when Jesus tells us ‘Watch’. The second is ‘Hope’.

Advent is a season that calls us to ‘Watch’, watch for the coming of Our Lord. In Advent Jesus tells us that we do not know when

the time of his return will be. We must watch for his coming whether it is on the last day of the world or it is when he comes for

us on our own last day. So, we must watch and be alert to how we are living and practicing our faith. We must watch and see that

we proclaim him in our lives. We are each called to prepare for his coming for ourselves and for the world. As we will hear John

the Baptist say: “We must prepare the way of the Lord”.

The second word is ‘Hope’. Advent is a wonderful season of ‘Hope’, hope for the present, hope for the future and hope for each

of our lives. As human beings, we cannot live without hope. All human beings hope to live in peace, to have what they need to

live and care for their families. So many in the world hope for deliverance without knowing where that deliverance will come from.

In Advent we as Catholic Christians are reminded that the Hope of the World has already come. He has come in the person of Jesus

Christ born of Mary. Jesus is the Son of God who lived, who died, who rose again and lives forever. We celebrate that He is here

present among us in his Body and Blood, the Eucharist, He is here among us in his Church and He is here in each of us who were

baptized into His Mystical Body. We are not only the people of hope, but we are the proclaimers of the Hope of the World, Jesus.

“Advent Wreath Lighting”

The Advent Wreath reminds us of the “Light of Christ” which came into the World. It also reminds us that we are called to keep

that “Light of Christ” burning brightly in our lives and in our Church. I would hope that each family would have their own Advent

Wreath at home and have it on the dining room table for family meals.

As I mentioned last week we continue our tradition of lighting the Advent Wreath at the start of each mass. We invite families,

or couples, or single adults to volunteer to light the Wreath each week. If you or your family would like to light the candles of the

Advent Wreath at your mass, please call the rectory and sign up to do so.

All you must do is be in the lobby of the Church or by the front office in the Marian Center for the 10:30 am mass 5 minutes before

mass and identify yourself to the ushers. You will then join in the procession at the start of mass and light the candles with the

celebrant at the appropriate time. It is a wonderful way to join in the celebration of Advent.

“Feast of the Immaculate Conception”

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is this Friday. Mary is the patroness of the United States under her title of “Our Lady of

the Immaculate Conception”. It is a Holy Day of Obligation. Our mass schedule will be Thursday evening anticipated mass at 6:30

pm. Friday 8:45 am and 6:30 pm.

“Christmas Pageant”

Our Religious Education Christmas Pageant is next Sunday, Dec. 10th, at 2:00 pm in the Marian Center. Our children have been

practicing for several weeks for this wonderful celebration. Please plan to join us and support our students, teachers, aides and

parents who have prepared this wonderful pageant. It is a wonderful celebration of our Parish Life. Our children are our future.

Coming together to celebrate with them tells them how important they are to us and the Church.

May God bless you,

Fr. Stephen Cinque 5 86
