PASTOR’S CORNER

Dear Flock, I hope Advent has begun well for you. I hope those Advent gift bags have gotten you off to a good start. If you have not started off on a good foot, remember that this Advent is one of the longest possible (27 days), so there is plenty of time to catch up.

I was able to go back to St. Louis to be with some of my family for Thanksgiving (I would have hosted them at the rectory, but Fr. Mark was not willing to let my relatives crash in his suite for their post-dinner-turkey-induced-coma naps.) On the day after Thanksgiving, one of my brothers went to find a live tree for the holiday at a local tree farm. He did not invite me, probably because I am not part of his immediate family, but also because he remembered nervously that I used to play with fire a lot as a kid.

Anyway, though I understand that he would not need to invite me, I think I would have enjoyed it, because it would have been a new experience for me. We did not have a real tree growing up. I found out this last week that this was because one of my brothers had asthmatic reactions to real pine trees (which I guess is a legitimate reason for having a fake tree.) The fake tree that we used for all of my childhood was purchased in the 1960’s. I know this because my dad threw a newspaper from that year into the box, and it was left in there in perpetuity. So, part of the ritual each year was pulling out the newspaper and rediscovering what car sales were like and what news was important at that time. The ritual also included actually putting up the tree, which involved screwing the “trunk” together and securing it in the base and then placing the “branches” in the pre-drilled holes in the “trunk”. This was always a little frustrating, because the numbers on the tape for each wire stem were faded and you were not always sure you were putting the branches in the right level. Each year we promised ourselves that we would rewrite the numbers when we took the tree down to make the next year easier, but we always forgot, because we were too sad when we were taking down decorations.

Anyway, the process was never done alone. One, because the tree box was too heavy and bulky to drag up from the basement alone. Two, because preparing for Christmas was so much more enjoyable as a family. We cherished the time to set up, and often there were tasks that we each did year after year as part of the tradition. We listened to music (it should have been Advent music, but Barry Manilow never came out with an Advent album) and enjoyed each other’s company. The family was together, preparing for the coming of Jesus at Christmas.

My guess is that you and your family have similar traditions (whether or not you have a fake-news tree) (actually, the news in our tree box was not fake; it was just outdated). I think that it was part of God the Father’s plan that, when possible, we would prepare for the coming of His family member, His Son, as a family. Our family is meant to mirror God’s Trinitarian Family. We are also meant to mirror the Holy Family, in which took place the preparations for the coming of Jesus the first time.

The parish staff’s desire this year is that your Advent preparations are very fruitful, really preparing your heart to celebrate the birth of our Lord at Christmas. We want to help with this. Whereas we hope that most of you are able to prepare at home as a family, using an Advent wreath and other prayers together, we know that some of us do not have family around with whom we can prepare. Either way, we want to help you prepare as a parish family. The Advent bags we handed out last week were one way (if you did not get a chance to receive one, there are still bags and candles available in the narthex or parish office.) The nativity set and St. Joseph image display this weekend is another way (make sure you check out the display after Mass.) Thirdly, we as a staff are praying for all of our families regularly during Advent.

The fourth way happens next weekend. If you picked up your Advent bag (and actually opened it), you saw that there were a few names in the bags. These are some of your fellow parish families, and our hope is that you use the candle you received as you pray regularly for these families to have a blessed, grace-filled Christmas. Next weekend, on December 12th, we are having an Advent Prayer Service, where we encourage you to bring your candle to join our parish family as we pray together for each other. The parish family will be praying that the Holy Family (St. Joseph, whose “year” ends this week; Mary, as Our Lady of Guadalupe; and Jesus) help all of our individual families to become more and more transformed as part of God’s family during this Advent and Christmas. Our prayer service will include the candles, so make sure you bring them with you. It begins at 4pm and will be followed by a free taco dinner in the church basement (to celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe.) I hope you can join us to make this Advent and Christmas special for our family!

First quick reminder: this Wednesday, December 8th, is the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will celebrate Mass on Tuesday at 6pm and on Wednesday at 6:25am, 8:15am, noon, and 6pm. After each Mass there will be an opportunity to do the Consecration to St. Joseph for those who have been reading the book in preparation.

Second quick reminder: this past Wednesday the Supreme Court took up a challenge to a Mississippi law that seeks to protect the lives of children in the womb. This is an important case that could reverse Roe vs. Wade partially or completely, so please be praying for wisdom and courage for our Supreme Court Justices.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Advent is such a beautiful season of preparation and anticipation. Our halls are already filled with Advent wreaths and talk of Baby Jesus. I love listening to the many sweet tiny voices singing Christmas carols and I especially enjoy hearing our middle school students practice their hand bells as they prepare for Christmas.

We are still experiencing a since of isolation as we anxiously await the end to COVID. However, we know God’s love is constant and alive! I love talking to our students about their favorite Christmas traditions, and what Christmas looks like in their family. It doesn’t matter if you are talking to the tiniest Kindergartener or the tallest 8th grader, Christmas is sacred, special, and a season of joy for every child. The many traditions we all have in our family can bring us comfort during this time of uncertainty. We are so blessed to be in a community with a shared belief of Christ and the importance of His birth. May God bless each of you during Advent with good health and peaceful hearts, as we prepare and anticipate together.

THANK YOU, BLOOD DONORS

On behalf of patients at all the area hospitals, the Community Blood Center expresses thanks to St. Joseph Parish for hosting a successful blood drive on November 22nd, with 111 donors, helping the Center meet their daily needs of 580 pints. Special thanks to the Knights of Columbus for the use of their Hall and to the Knights who made the arrangements for us.
