Overport P.S are proud to be official partners with The Resili-
ence Project. We began our journey at the beginning of this
year and have already seen improvement in the resilience of
our students. We are really excited that we will be continuing
this valuable program in 2019.
Hugh van Cuylenburg, the founder of the project, discovered
what it takes to be truly happy whilst volunteering in a school
in India. This is his story:
“In 2008, I was fortunate enough to spend a few months liv-
ing and volunteering in the far north of India. In this desert
community, there was no running water, no electricity and no
beds; everyone slept on the floor of their desert hut. Despite the fact these people had very little to call their own, I was continu-
ally blown away by how happy they were.
It was this experience, and subsequent post graduate studies, that have led me to some pretty simple conclusions about the
things that we need to be doing here in Australia if we want to be happier. In a nutshell, I learnt in this desert village that prac-
ticing gratitude, empathy (compassion) and mindfulness leads us to a happier more fulfilling experience. Once I discovered
these three principles were also evidence based, I thought it might be a good idea to turn this into a program for schools. Turns
out it wasn’t just schools that wanted to hear this message!”
Our teachers have done incredible work facilitating lessons based around the resilience principles; gratitude, empathy and mind-
fulness. Our students are thoroughly enjoying writing and drawing in their journals and the discussion around the school has
been positive. These valuable lessons and student journals will continue next year.
In 2019, Martin Heppell, will be presenting information about the project during a parent information session on Wednesday 6th
February. He will be giving tips on how to help your children become resilient and happy through gratitude, empathy, kindness
and mindfulness. This year’s presentation was a great success and we know you will find it extremely valuable.
There is usually a cost involved but we feel strongly about making this presentation available to all families, therefore, free tick-
ets are available to collect from the front office.
The Resilience Project is fast becoming renowned worldwide and you can find more information here:
