Very many decades ago, when I was a child, I remember Advent as a kind of shorter Lent, complete with a mood of austere fasting and penance. I remember vividly that we never put up the Christmas Tree until Dec. 24, and it stayed up at least until Epiphany or Twelfth Night. For the present generation the season seems more like the beginning of a seven-week Christmas celebration. When Christmas decorations abound already before Halloween it is difficult to let Advent be Advent. Liturgically, it is not regarded today as a little Lent, but a time of patient, quiet and imaginative waiting. We open our hearts to become more aware of the Christ who dwells in us, in our sisters and brothers and in our very world. We are all “Bethlehems” where Christ wants to be reborn in us as we try to slow down our lives and make room for the Savior whose Spirit we harbor. Sometime during Advent we should reflect on what really gives our lives meaning and purpose. What are our goals?

We live in between Jesus’ first coming into our world and his final coming at the end of time. Obviously we are not waiting for Christ to be born. Our attention is not on the distant past. Nor do we worry about the time and hour of the second coming. We believe that Christ will come to bring God’s kingdom to full fruition. But this belief directs us to the present and not to the worrisome future. Advent’s real question is what are we doing with our lives in the present? How do we welcome Christ now, this time between the two great Advents of birth and judgment? Advent teaches us that we live “in the gap.” (Not the clothing store, though some of us do spend a lot of time there) Living “in the gap” reminds us that things are not what they once were nor yet what they shall be. So we wait in creative anticipation, building up God’s kingdom now.

The principal figures of Advent are Isaiah, John the Baptist and Mary. Today, the Baptist makes his annual appearance. John challenged his listeners to prepare a “way.” This is not something geographical but rather moral. The Way will be marked by conversion and a new manner of life. Jesus would call himself the “Way.” Early Christians described themselves as people of the “Way.” (Acts 9: 2)

If Advent is a more quiet time of sober reflection about life’s purpose, for what might we be listening? Perhaps we should listen to the laments of people, especially of the marginalized. We could pay attention to the longings of our hearts and the hearts of all. Today is the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Our yearnings for peace should be of great concern for us as we witness the violence of war and the violence of too many guns on our city streets.

Tomorrow is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, always a Holy Day of Obligation, since Mary Immaculate is our national patron here in the USA. This Friday is yet another great Marian Feast, Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron of all the Americas. Mary, under all her titles, is a perfect Advent model. She had to wait for nine months for the birth of the Savior. She could do nothing to speed up the process. As the Immaculate Conception Mary asks us, like herself, to be worthy bearers of the Christ within us. As Our Lady of Guadalupe she bids us to tear down the walls that separate one people from another: the conqueror from the conquered, the rich from the poor, one race from another race, white collar from blue collar, the in-group from the marginalized, and one religion from another religion.

Our world is one world, one home for the strong and the lame. It is a place where what the blind see and the deaf hear are also valued. It is a way where we walk and wait with each other, a way where we join as sisters and brothers, which leads us all to a home where every person is cherished. If any person is made to feel unwelcome then no one is safe.

Please, O Prince of Peace, be born in us again before it is too late. Help us to prepare the way of the Lord and make all the crooked ways straight so that we can all travel together, building up the Kingdom of God.

ONE WORD AT A TIME...

LOOK OUTNothing gets surer or quicker attention than hollering, “Look out!” The words alert others, perhaps to some impending danger. We may not see a car coming or a box about to crash down. And when we hear those words, we do look out. We see something that we didn’t notice before. In Advent, the prophets, especially Isaiah and John the Baptist, cry, “Look out! Be aware. Notice what is happening and what is about to happen.” They are the voices of Advent that grab our attention. The sacraments, too, are signs that speak to us and call for our attention. Whether it is the Eucharist or Penance or any other sacrament, they alert us to realities that we may not notice—the presence of the Lord, the possibility of mercy, or the visibility of God’s love in a married couple’s life together. Listen to the voices of Advent. And then look out for and listen to for the sacramental signs around us.

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS

Whether we realize it or not, we are all beneficiaries of the tremendous contributions made by women and men religious to the Church and to the world. This annual collection, taken on the weekend of December 13th and 14th, is an opportunity to honor and thank retired Catholic sisters, brothers and religious-order priests for their generous service to our Church and our world. Thank you for your support of this appeal.

DECORATING FOR CHRISTMAS

All are welcome to help decorate the Church on Saturday, December 20th. We will begin putting up Christmas decorations at 10:30am.

CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR’S MASSES

We will begin our celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord at 4:00pm on Christmas Eve with a Children’s Mass. At 11:30pm we will begin with Choral Carols, which will lead into our bilingual Midnight Mass. Masses on Christmas morning, will be celebrated at 8:15am and 9:45am in English and at 11:30am in Spanish.

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God will be celebrated beginning with the 5:00pm on Wednesday, December 31st. Masses on Thursday, January 1st will be in English at 9:45am and at 11:30am in Spanish

Join Us As We Celebrate MarySOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

Monday, December 8th, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please join us as we celebrate with Masses at 7:00am, 8:30am and bilingually at 7:00pm. This major feast honors the Blessed Virgin, who was conceived without sin in preparation to bear God himself. The Immaculate Conception is a Holy Day of Obligation in the United States.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE MASS AT SJB

Friday, December 12th, is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Mañanitas will be prayed at 5:00am, followed by coffee and pastries in the church hall. Mass will celebrated at 7:00pm, with a celebration to follow.

Hace muchas décadas, cuando yo era niño, recuerdo que el Adviento era como una especie de Cuaresma corta, con un estado de ánimo de estricto ayuno y penitencia. Recuerdo vívidamente que nunca poníamos el Árbol de Navidad hasta el 24 de diciembre, y permanecía por lo menos hasta Epifanía o la noche de Reyes. Para la generación actual la temporada parece más bien como el principio de una celebración de siete semanas de Navidad. Cuando abundan ya las decoraciones de Navidad antes de Halloween, es difícil permitir que el Adviento sea Adviento. Litúrgicamente, hoy en día no se considera como una Cuaresma corta, sino como una temporada de paciencia, tranquilidad y de espera imaginativa. Abrimos nuestros corazones para ser más conscientes de que Cristo mora en nosotros, en nuestros hermanos y hermanas y en nuestro mismo mundo. Todos somos “de Belén”, donde Cristo desea renacer en nosotros a medida que tratamos de reducir la velocidad de nuestras vidas y hacer espacio para el Salvador cuyo Espíritu albergamos. En algún momento durante el Adviento debemos reflejar sobre lo que realmente da significado y propósito a nuestras vidas. ¿Cuáles son nuestros objetivos?

Vivimos en medio de la primera venida de Jesús a nuestro mundo y su última venida al final de los tiempos. Obviamente no estamos esperando que Cristo nazca. Nuestra atención no está en el lejano pasado. Tampoco nos preocupamos por el tiempo y la hora de la segunda venida. Creemos que Cristo vendrá a traer el Reino de Dios a su entera plenitud. Pero esta creencia nos dirige al presente y no a un futuro alarmante. La pregunta verdadera de Adviento es ¿Que estamos haciendo con nuestras vidas en el presente? ¿Cómo le damos la bienvenida a Cristo, esta vez, entre los dos grandes advientos, el nacimiento y el juicio? El Adviento nos enseña que vivimos “en la brecha”. El vivir “en la brecha” nos recuerda que las cosas no son como lo que eran antes, ni tampoco lo que serán. Así que ahora esperamos con anticipación creativa, construyendo el Reino de Dios.

Las principales figuras del Adviento son Isaías, Juan el Bautista y María. Hoy en día, el Bautista hace su aparición anual. Juan desafió a sus oyentes a preparar un “camino”. Esto no es algo geográfico, sino más bien moral. El camino estará marcado por la conversión y una nueva manera de vivir. Jesús se llamaba a sí mismo el “Camino”. Los primeros cristianos se describieron a sí mismos como gente del “Camino.” (Hechos 9:2)

Si el Adviento es una temporada tranquila de reflexión moderada sobre el propósito de la vida, ¿Cuál es el objetivo que podríamos estar escuchando? Quizás deberíamos escuchar los lamentos de la gente, especialmente de los marginados. Podríamos prestar atención a los anhelos de nuestros corazones y los corazones de los demás. Hoy es el aniversario del ataque a Pearl Harbor en 1941. Debemos preocuparnos por nuestros anhelos de paz, ya que atestiguamos la violencia de la guerra y la violencia de demasiadas armas en nuestras calles de la ciudad.

Mañana es la fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción, siempre es un día de precepto, puesto que María Inmaculada es nuestra patrona nacional aquí en los EE.UU. Este viernes es otra gran fiesta mariana, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, patrona de todas las Américas. María, bajo todos sus títulos, es la modelo perfecta de Adviento. Ella tuvo que esperar nueve meses para el nacimiento del Salvador. No podía hacer nada para acelerar el proceso. A medida que la Inmaculada Concepción de María nos pide que, como ella, seamos dignos portadores de Cristo dentro de nosotros. Como la Virgen de Guadalupe que nos invita a derribar los muros que separan un pueblo del otro: al conquistador de los vencidos, a los ricos de los pobres, a una raza de la otra raza, al profesional del obrero, al grupo popular de los marginados, y una religión de otra religión.

Nuestro mundo es un mundo, un hogar para los fuertes y los débiles. Es un lugar donde los ciegos ven, los sordos oyen y también son valorados. Es una manera donde caminamos y esperamos unos con otros, es la manera en que nos unimos como hermanos y hermanas, y que nos guía a una casa donde cada persona es apreciada. Si alguna persona se hace sentir incómoda entonces, nadie está a salvo.

Por favor, Oh Príncipe de la Paz, vuelve a nacer en nosotros una vez más antes de que sea demasiado tarde. Ayúdanos a preparar el camino del Señor y enderezar todos los senderos torcidos, para que todos podamos viajar juntos, construyendo el Reino de Dios.

De Palabra en Palabra...

TENER CUIDADONada llama la atención con mayor rapidez o eficacia que exclamar: “¡Cuidado!”. Esta palabra alerta a los demás, tal vez con la intención de evitar un peligro. Podemos no ver un auto que se aproxima o una caja que está a punto de caerse. Y cuando escuchamos esa palabra, sí estamos atentos. Vemos algo que no habíamos advertido antes. En el Adviento, los profetas, especialmente Isaías y Juan el Bautista, exclamaron: “¡Cuidado! Estén atentos. Adviertan lo que está ocurriendo y lo que está por ocurrir”. Ellos son las voces de Adviento que llaman nuestra atención. Los sacramentos también son signos que nos hablan y llaman nuestra atención. Ya sea la Eucaristía o la Penitencia, o cualquier otro sacramento, estos nos alertan acerca de realidades que tal vez no estemos advirtiendo: la presencia del Señor, la posibilidad de misericordia o la visibilidad del amor de Dios en la vida unida de una pareja. Escuchemos las voces de Adviento. Y, luego, estemos atentos y escuchemos los signos sacramentales que nos rodean.

Comenzaremos nuestra celebración de la Natividad de Nuestro Señor a las 4:00pm en la víspera de la Navidad con la Misa de Niños. A las 11:30pm comenzaremos con los villancicos, y a continuación celebraremos la Misa Bilingüe de Medianoche. As we continue through the Advent season, we continue to wait. We wait with joyous anticipation and we wait in hopefulness. It takes patience and it takes faith. Mary is a perfect example of this trust in God. Mary waited with great hope for the coming of our Savior. During this 2nd week of Advent we have two great opportunities to honor Mary, our perfect example of patience and faith. We celebrate both the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conceptions and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Mary said “yes” when God asked her to do His will, and now we are hoping that you will say “yes” when we ask that you join us in our Legacy Campaign. It’s often difficult to wait for results. But with patience and faith, we will indeed leave our legacy for future generations.

We are truly grateful for all the support we have received so far, but we need you! Please help by supporting our Legacy Campaign. Information can be found at the Campaign website at www.sjblegacy.org or by contacting Jennifer Cortez in the rectory office.
