P ’ C L , T P (17) THE FOLSOM LAKE EXPERIENCE – 1967 (Con nued) Mary Jo, the sister of one of my best friends, began to catch my a en-

on more and more. She was a sophomore and, in addi on to being beau ful in appearance, she was fun to be around. She had a way of bringing out the best in people. Her special quali es began to cast a spell on me ever so gradually. Her kindness and concern was deep. She could be kind to people who everyone else felt like ignoring. I was touched by how kind she was to my eight brothers and to my only sister who was a fourth grader at the me. I had never been that kind to them, and I was their brother! I was touched by her devo on at Mass, too. I could sense she was really praying. And when she said something as simple as “God bless you,” it had power. I could tell she really meant it. By mid-Summer, when she was away for a couple of weeks on vaca on, it hit me like a ton of ambrosia. I nev-er missed anyone so much in my whole life. It far transcended any infatua on of the past. Toward the end of the Summer we were returning from a walk on a hill overlooking Folsom Lake and I found myself saying for the first me to anyone, “I love you.” Saying it out loud somehow released its pow-er. Her response was a tender but short embrace and it all seemed too good to be true. Later that a ernoon, as I drove her to her Grandparents’ home in Folsom, a most profound realiza on dawned on me: I could no longer doubt the exist-ence of God. In fact, the phrase, “God is love,” which I had heard many mes in the past with no impact, now suddenly made sense to me. It stuck in my mind as the most fundamental, awesome, joy-filling reality of all! The key insight into my blissful experience of love at that me was that the love so transcended me. I could not control it or make it be by my will power alone. It seemed purely gratuitous, a gi so blissful that it made me look beyond my love for her and her love for me to the transcendent yet somehow immanent source of our love. (To be con nued)

Advent Blessings, Fr. John
