November-December 2013 “2013 Homecoming with Multicultural Center” The Mulcultural Center fed over 200 students during the Good morning Seawolves as a part of the UAA Homecoming Celebraon on Tuesday, October 15th. Student enjoyed fresh warm breakfast and howled showing their Seawolf spirits! On Wednesday, October 16th, we hosted the Seawolf Slide to demonstrate students slide/line dance and prepared them for UAA Homecoming Dance. We also arranged for a group of Multicultural Center students to meet and greet the members of the Acapella group Pentatonix during their Visit to Anchorage. Students learn health risks and ways to live a healthier life while in college. Where: Mulcultural Center, RH 106 When: Every Tuesday, 11-11:15 am We co-sponsor an on-going Community Cinema Series with the Department of Student Activities. Students can experience various genres of documentaries and discuss about issues after each documentary. On October 24th, The Graduates/ Los Graduados, was presented , and the upcoming one is The State of Arizona on November 13th, 7 pm at RH 110. 2013 Fall AHAINA Graduation AHAINA student program recognizes students who have accomplished their goal of acquiring their undergraduate and graduate degrees the Fall 2013 semester. Your success is demonstration of hard work and diligence. We are excited and proud to have you join us at the AHAINA Graduaon Ceremony that will take place on December 14th, 2013. You are encouraged to also parcipate in the University Commencement. “Student Diversity Award” The UAA Diversity Acon Council seeks to recognize and empower students to lead change in the community by offering tuion award up to $500. The award is for students who promote welcoming environment inclusive of diverse people and culture and provide a student voice in diversity . To be considered students must submit the following Monday, December 2, 2013: www.uaa.alaska.edu/dac

We are sad to say Goodbye to one of our amazing Office Manager Janette Thornton. She lived in Alaska for over 30 years, and is now moving to the lower 48. We are sad to see her go and wish her the best of luck.

Green & Gold News introduced Andre Thorn, Director of the Multicultural Center, to UAA community . Andre has served as the Director since 2011 after 13 years of serving in a variety of capacities at the University of Missouri. He has over 20 years in higher education and has focused his efforts on developing collaborative ways to increase the retention, persistence and engagement among all of our talented multicultural students. While at UAA, he has endeavored "building a better Multicultural Center" with some major enhancements to the center and student programs, AHAINA and the new Seawolf Success Program.

Staff Spotlight: Andre Thorn

Ezra is currently a junior at UAA and has recently received the Seawolf Student Leader Award. This award is available for students who are involved in the UAA community and show great leadership skills while maintain an excellent GPA.

Earlier this year Ezra also received the Men and Woman of Excellence Award from the Multicultural Center.

Chancellor’s Award for Excellence We would like to say “CONGRATULATIONS!!” to Leo Medal for receiving the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence: Service to Community. As the Student Success Coordinator at the Multicultural Center, Leo is responsible for Cultural Programming through the AHAINA program and academic support for Junior and Senior level students.

Leo built connection between UAA and Anchorage community by offering students a series of academic support workshops and inviting inspirational guest speakers to UAA.

Ms. Jaeyeon Cho has received two awards, the Seawolf Community Service Award, and the Linda P. Lazzell Leadership Award. The Community Service Award is available for students who show excellent commitment to volunteer service, while maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher.
