There must be a list around here somewhere of the stuffveterinarians are supposed to write about for all of the holiday issues of magazines this time of year…you know, the

list and accompanying stories of the horror of tinsel and chocolate and poinsettiasand ribbon and electricity and hot stoves and holly berries…and didn’t we just readthat article a few months ago? No, we read it for the tenth time last year. It just seemslike yesterday. I don’t want to have to re-invent the list. I’d probably miss a fewimportant things. We should just skip the list and jump to some bottom line…like“BE SENSIBLE.” Not much of a ring, but it captures the whole thing. Don’t giveeggnog to the dog. BE SENSIBLE captures that. Don’t string lights on the cat, don’tapply tape to the cat’s fur. It may be funny, but it’s torture. Don’t torture. It says badthings about you. Strive for good things. I’m thinking this little BE SENSIBLE phrase

Is a Puppy or Kitten for Christmas Always a Bad Idea?Everyone hears about pets as gifts not being a good idea,but here are a couple of ways to make it a great idea:

A very well-planned gift of a dog or cat can make the pet ahealthy, beloved part of the family. When a parent decidesthe family is ready for pet ownership and that the holidaysis the right time to introduce everyone to a new memberof the family, they can visit a local animal shelter, ask plenty

of questions, and choose a pet who would be a right fit for the family. Get acquaintedwith the idea of a pet, plan for its arrival, and collect necessary items – collar, leash,food bowls, food, etc. – before the pet gets home, to make the family ready and willingparticipants in the planned gift. When the recipient is right (someone who truly wantsa pet and understands and accepts the responsibility involved), and the gift is wellplanned, cats and dogs can be the greatest gifts a family ever receives.

Another way is to encourage animal adoption. While allowing your loved one to choosetheir own pet and sparing the animal the stress of Christmas chaos, instead of theactual animal, give something that paves the way for a pet to be chosen later. Manyanimal shelters offer gift certificates, so you can pay the adoption fees for the futurepet owner, but let them choose their new best friend when they are ready. Items likepet toys, leashes, food dishes, and pet beds are also great gifts for someone who youknow plans to get a pet soon.

Pets are very much in the Holiday spirit: A pet is a blessing, a member of the family, atrue friend for life and a memory forever. If you choose to give one this Christmas,make sure it will be well cared for and loved.

They’ll say they like him, but curseyou as they step in the poop you missed. Besensible. It covers the security rules regardingcounter-surfers and baked goods. It coversthe cats drinking from the Christmas treeholder. It covers dogs drinking beer. This all-purpose phrase might just make it onto atee-shirt. Be sensible this holiday season andmost likely you and your pet will be safe –you’ll make it through.

White Chocolate Cereal Mix3 cups bite-size rice square cereal3 cups bite-size corn square cereal1 cup small pretzel twists or pretzel sticks1 cup honey-roasted peanuts1 24 - 12oz package white baking pieces1 12oz package mint-flavored candy-coated milk chocolate pieces

Step 1 In a very large bowl combine cereals, pretzels and peanuts; set aside.Step 2 Melt baking pieces according to package directions. Pour melted chocolateover cereal mixture. Stir gently to coat. Spread on a large piece of waxedpaper or parchment paper. Sprinkle with chocolate pieces. Cool and breakinto pieces. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week or in the freezerfor 1 month. Makes 16 cups.

Toffee Brownie Trifle

1 pckg fudge brownie mix (13 x 9-inch pan size)

2-1/2 cups cold milk

1 pckg (3.4 oz) instant cheesecake or vanilla pudding mix

1 pckg (3.3 oz) instant white chocolate pudding mix

1 carton (8 oz) frozen whipped topping, thawed

2-3 Heath candy bars (1.4 oz each), chopped

Step 1 Prepare and bake brownies according to package dir

brownies, using a greased 13 x 9-in. baking pan. Cool comp

letely on wire rack.

Step 2 In a large bowl, beat milk and pudding mixes on low

speed for 2 minutes.

Let stand for 2 minutes or until soft-set. Fold in whipped t

Candy Cane Cake

Cake1 box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® white cake mix water, vegetable oil and egg whites called for oncake mix box

1/2 teaspoon red food color 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract

White Icing1 cup powdered sugar 1 tablespoon milk or water 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, if desired

Step 1 Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour 12-cup fluted tube cake pan. Make cakebatter as directed on box. Pour about 2 cups batter into pan. In small bowl,pour about 3/4 cup batter; stir in food color and peppermint extract. Pour pinkbatter over white batter in pan. Pour remaining white batter over pink batter.

Step 2 Bake and cool cake as directed on box.

Step 3 In small bowl, mix white icing ingredients. If necessary, stir in additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until smooth and spreadable. Spread over cake. Sprinklecrushed candy on top. Store loosely covered.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Cookies

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened

1/4 cup shortening 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 egg 1/2 teaspoon baking powde

3/4 teaspoon baking soda 3 doz. milk chocolate stars o

r candy-coated

Granulated sugar chocolate-covered peanuts

Step 1 Heat oven to 375ºF. Stir together 1/2 cup granulated s

ugar, the brown sugar, peanut

butter, butter, shortening and egg. Stir in flour, baking soda and

baking powder.

Step 2 Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in granulated sug

ar. Place about 2 inches

apart on ungreased cookie sheet.

Step 3 Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are light brown

1 chocolate star firmly in each cookie; cool on wire rack.
