By Leslie Ramirez & Rosa Ortiz

We had been trying to meet with Ms.Hall for a long time and now we finally had a chance. By the end, we had really exciting news.

Leslie & Rosa: Are you married? Do you have any kids?Ms.Hall: No, I am not married, I was married, but I am not married now. And no, I don’t have any kids.

Leslie & Rosa: What university did you go to?Ms.Hall: For under graduate I went to UNC state and then I went to get my masters degree I went

The Real Deal at Neal reporter Isa-iah Green spoke to Mr. Spottswood about exciting plans for next year at Neal Middle School. Starting next year, Neal will be a magnet school! However a lot of the things that make us a magnet are already occurring right now, like how we are a S.T.E.M. school. Mr. Spottswood thinks that we should make sure we are taking advantage of the wonderful learning opportu-nities provided to us currently. Mr. Spottswood says that our school will have a more hands-on approach to classes. We will have problem- and project-based learning and assessment, more STEM classes, increased technol-ogy, and more outside school learn-ing opportunities (summer camps etc.) He says “we’re preparing for a rigorous course load.” He expects classes will be more chal-lenging and engaging. They want to push us students as hard as we can to maximize our potential. We [the students] will change things by bringing a renewed work ethic to the class. No more “playing” in

to the university UNCG in Greens-boro.

Leslie & Rosa: How long have you been a principal?Ms.Hall: I’ve been a principal for 5 years.

Leslie & Rosa: Do you like being a principal?Ms.Hall: I love being a principal I love it and I love it and I love Neal.

Leslie & Rosa: What inspired you to be a principal?Ms.Hall: Well, I was a teacher and I taught middle school just like you guys are in right now and I was a

(cont. from page 1)middle school math teacher for about 12 years and I just decided that I wanted to further my ca-reer. I thought I would be a pretty good principal, and I could do things to help the teachers and help schools. That’s why I decided to become a principal.

Leslie & Rosa: Why did you want Neal students to wear uniforms?Ms.Hall: Well, actually, that was already a rule here when I got here, so I didn’t create that rule. It was already in place when I got here and hopefully we’re going to kind of change that a little bit.

Leslie & Rosa: What do students benefit from wearing uniforms?

Ms.Hall: Well, when they do

(cont. from p. 1)class, talking back to teachers. We have too much to do and get done to prepare for success in the real world. Classes will be too rigorous and engaging for any off task behavior. Mr. Spottswood hopes to add another elective class called, “Sci-ence of Technology” Yes, we will be getting more attention, hopefully, from parents and new students in the district that want to be a part of the change that is occurring at our school. He also hoped that we will keep all of our present teachers so we can build upon what we have started, help with continuity and add a few new folks to help move us forward.

it right and tuck their shirts in and all that, the idea of wear-ing uniforms is that you know how sometimes kids can be re-ally mean about clothes because some kids cant afford the fanciest clothes? So this way everybody is wearing the same thing.

Leslie & Rosa: What do we have to do to get rid of the uniforms?

Ms.Hall: I guess a thing that will help is if we knew parents will be supportive of the uniforms some of the the parents like the uni-forms and some parents don’t. We would have to do a survey. If we get enough votes, I would be glad to get rid of the uniforms.

Mr.Spottswood says that our school will have a more hands-on approach to classes next year.

By: Alex Banegas Rodriguez Neal Middle School, home of the Neal Eagles, is now a STEM (Sci-ence, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) school and next year it’s going to be a magnet school. But a few years ago, Neal was different. It was considered a low performing school and had a lot of behavior problems. Neal became a STEM school in 2012 and hired new teachers and staff. They have shared new ideas with the school this year. Mrs.Montford used to be a substitute last year, but now she is a STEM teacher at Neal. The students also have a new schedule. Instead of waiting in the gym in the morning, we go to an assigned

teacher and read for thirty minutes. This is called ICE. Studies show that reading 20 minutes or more a day will make a big increase in your reading ability. Neal has improved a lot. In 2009, our math overall score in 6th grade was 43.6 and now the overall is 63.1. We grew 20 points! The total in 2009 was 40.4 and now it is 51.3. We grew in almost 11 points! Neal also has program called ‘‘Citizen Schools.’’ which helps stu-dents study, and get prepared for the next grade and for high school. Last year, I learned many things. I learned about getting prepared for college. You can also go on apprentiships. An

apprentiship is a fun thing to do. You learn about many things, like learning how to make games, how to be a nurse, etc. Students and teachers and staff have been working hard together to improve and now students have better op-portunities. Neal had a bad repu-tation and many people used to talk bad about the school, but now Neal is heading to a bright positive future. I hope all the Neal Eagles come to Neal next year!

Outside Neal Middle School is a garden where Ms. Montford’s class is grow-ing good vegetables and herbs. The garden is small but there is good food, like broccoli, lettuce, and string beans. The vegetables are in a raised garden bed. Ms. Montford’s class planted the vegetables and herbs. Other classes were involved, too. They started planting the seeds on 9/11/12. Now, the plants are very big and are ready to be picked. The food in the garden will be picked and eaten soon. We used mulch to plant the seeds. We planted the seeds in a paper cup. Then we let them grow for about three weeks. The special thing about this garden is we are learn-ing how plants grow and we studied the plants to see what they do and how fast they grow.

Girls’ Basketball Team By Shania Harding

The Girls’ Basketball Team has worked hard over the last couple of weeks. On Tuesday Dec.4 the team won their first game against W.G Person Middle. The team was very excited. The team coaches worked hard to get this team going. The team has a lot of motivation. The team has to behave in all classes to play during a game. They also have to have good grades to play on the team and dur-ing the games and practice. So if you want to play, you have to act right in class and also on the court. On Dec. 6, the girl’s basketball team won against Lakewood. Number 12 on Lakewood was a great player. She made most of the points for Lakewood. Our team worked hard for our win. We were very excited to win against the team. We had some very supportive parents on the team that support the team that night.

Neal Middle Wins!!!By Amiyr Mohamed

After a losing streak last year, this year’s Neal Middle School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams beat Githens Middle School. The boys winning score was 50-35. The girls won 41-22. The basketball players got to go home that night with a home victory! Neal’s boys’ basketball team is 3-1, and the girls are 4-0! Can we go to the championship? Look-ing good so far. Better yet, can we win the champi-onship and bring home a trophy? Maybe, but there are more games to come Come out and support us. They are great games to watch. Will Neal keep its wining streak or will our next opponent, Rogers Herr, beat us? Come out and see!(Breaking News: Both boys and girls b-ball teams won against Rogers Herr! Championship here we come!)

The Best Team in the NBA By Amiyr Mohamed

I am a basketball person. I love bas-ketball and every thing about it! I believe that OKC (Oklahoma City) is the best team in the NBA (National Basketball Association). Their 5 starters are Kevin Durant, playing as Power Forward, Russell Westbrook, playing as guard, Harden playing as point, Surge Abaca as the center, and Kindle as small forward! They made it to the finals last year and they only lost to Miami Heat because the referees didn’t call the fouls against the Heat! It should have been Kevin Durant as MVP not Lebron James. OKC is a new team who I believe will win the championship this year because they are so much better! Kevin Durant is a 6 foot 10 monster and will dunk and kill anybody on the court and can bucket a shot from anywhere. He is nasty! I love watching him play because he is always taking that game-winning shot and do-ing something different. It’s real entertainment. He is a great role model in my opinion because he has a motto: hard work beats talent, when talent fails to work hard! I will use that motto to my full ability.

Why Should 6th graders Take Gym as an Elective?

By Dennis Gibbs

You 6th graders are probably still wondering about your electives. Some of you are thinking about gym and that’s a good idea. Gym is fun, good for your health, and it also gets you in shape and ready for sports. I went into the gym one day for an interview and these are the things I found out:

Dennis: Does the elective classes exercise?Couch Howard: Yes, we’re doing it now.

Dennis: Why should you choose gym as your elective?Kayla Rivera: Because it’s fun.

Dennis: What do you like about gym?Faith Henderson: To have fun with my best friend.Kayla Rivera: The fun sports.

Dennis: Does gym help you in life?Quentin: Yes, it helps you with sports.Cody: It gets you in shape.

Dennis: When do you stretch?Cody: After we change out. As you can see, these kids are having fun and may be losing weight at the same time. That’s why gym is a fun, healthy elective.

BullyingBy Dominique Perry

What is the difference be-tween bullying and a normal conflict between two peers? According to kidpower.org: “Conflict is a normal part of most relationships because people have different perspectives and priorities. Most upsetting behavior between people is NOT bullying.” I’ve learned from Ms.Tune and reading that “Bullying takes many different forms, including physical threats or violence and so-cial attacks on someone’s reputation. People bully in different ways like verbal, social, and cyber.” It might be easy to say some-thing about someone behind a com-puter screen and not worry about them fighting back, but I dare you to

The Sandy Creek Shootings

By: Shania Harding

A very sad thing that hap-pened on Friday, December 14. 20 kids and 6 adults were killed at San-dy Creek elementary school in Con-necticut. One teacher put all of her students into a cabinet. The shooter came to the room and she said that her students were somewhere else. He shot her and then went on. That teacher did a very heroic thing. That was a very great thing to do. She died for her students. Do you know how the parents must feel to know that their child has been killed by some idiot? I wonder, how do you feel when everyone else’s child has been called, and every other parent has their child, and the policeman walks up to you and says that your child is dead. This was heart breaking for everyone in America. Even the president was crying over this very tragic incident.

say it to their faces. It’s just wrong to do that. If you got bullied like that, you would not like it. Lots of people kill themselves every day because people bully them. It hurts really bad. It might seem like it’s not a big deal, but people’s lives are at risk because of bullying. Put yourself in their shoes and see how you like being bullied. You might want to kill yourself. Sometimes that’s why people bring guns to school and kill people.

Hispanic Leaders of Tomorrow is a group that is made up of tal-ented Hispanic kids. Neal is the first school to have a program like Hispanic Leaders of Tomor-row in DPS. The school board is very impressed with Neal. They think this is awesome. This pro-gram is made up of intellectual Hispanic kids. This program will give Neal a better reputa-tion.

In HLT (Hispanic Leaders of Tomorrow) we are making com-mercials about bad stuff, such as drinking while driving, smok-ing, doing drugs, and gangs. My group is making a commercial about drinking while driving. Mr. Mendoza, the person in

charge of the group, and Mr. Spottswood, the second in charge, told us to make it seem as real as can be. The commercials we are mak-ing might even go on air, but only the very best 3 will be chosen. My group and I will be one of the best.

I love being at HLT because I get time to hang out with my friends and do lots of

things, such as the commer-cials. We get a snack every time we go, and then we start on our activities. We go outside for the last 45mins we have left. We have lots of fun at the group because it’s cool to hang out with your friends. You may also meet new peo-ple. You (if you’re Hispanic) should ask Mr. Spottswood or Mr. Mendoza if you can join HLT. It will be great to see you there.

Seventh Graders Speak OutWhy You Should Take Mr. Kelly’s Cool Class

By: Alex Trejo

In Mr. Kelly’s class we have lots of fun and learn at our own pace. Instead of giving us lectures, we do hands-on projects. For example, everyday when I walk into his class, I get right to work. I work with light bulbs and small motors. We also work with snap circuits. It’s really enjoyable. We learn while doing the activities. He makes us videos teaching us and then we watch them and we do the activities. He is a really chill teacher. He usually doesn’t yell at us. He’s always cool to talk to and he’s my favorite teacher in the school. That’s how Mr. Kelly’s class is.

In unit eight, I learned how to work with small simple circuits. Simple circuits include: parallel circuits, simple circuits, and combination circuits. A simple cir-cuit is a circuit that goes one way only. A parallel circuit is two simple circuits put together. A combination circuit is a simple and parallel circuit together. Unit nine is about more complex circuits. It’s when we work with motors and small fans and light bulbs and much, much more. Unit ten is harder and we work with resistors. I have to learn more about unit ten.

I am already on unit ten, but other students are on unit nine. Unit ten is a really harder unit than unit nine but it’s still entertaining Just a few students are on unit ten with me, so I am ahead in Mr. Kelly’s class. It’s really

fun in there and I learn a lot, so I think it’s a great class. If I could, I would like to take his class next school year..

Earlier in the year we talked about multimeters and that geeks have them and for unit ten you need to use a multimeter, so we acted like we where geeks. It was really amusing. We even called Mr. Kelly a geek for having a multimeter.

If you like working with elec-tronic circuits, join Mr. Kelly’s class. If you like working with lots of lectures then this is not your class. On the other hand, if you like hands-on activities, this is the place for you. It’s the coolest class I’ve ever been to. I actually switched classes so I could go to his class. If you are interested in Mr. Kelly’s class, ask if you can go to his class for 2nd semester.

My favorite teacher is Ms. Tageson. She is always nice to me. She lets me borrow her personal books. She is cool and she is fun. She gives the class fun assignments and she comes in every day like the day before never happened. She is always in a good mood.Dominique Perry

My favorite class of 2012-2013 at Neal Middle School is Math with Ms. Hunter. She is nice. She helps us when we need help and if we try, she will give us a 100 for that day. Ms Hunter is my favorite teacher not only because she is nice, but because she helps us step by step on our work. And she will try her best to get you on task. Omar Lechuga

RespectBy Sentereia Trueluck

Respect is something you have to earn. It’s also called the ‘Golden Rule’. Students at Neal Middle School expect to get respect from their teachers, but y’all fail to realize that in order to get respect you have to give respect. Some simple examples of no respect is*Talking while the teachers are talk-ing, *Not doing the work,*Not being prepared Those are some things that teachers see as disrespectful. All you have to do is walk a day in the teacher’s shoes. Maybe then, they wouldn’t seem so “disrespectful” to you!Success

By Amiyr Mohamed

People like Martin Luther King fought for our freedom, and even fought for us to come to school to learn, prosper, and to be suc-cessful. We fail to remember the civil rights fighters who risked their lives for the kids of tomor-row. Then we act as if it never happened. Many of us want expensive things, but we can’t see what it takes to get all those nice cars, big houses and good life. We, as students, fail to realize the key part: Education! People think that sports are the way out of school. I’m a sports fan myself, but I’m also an education fan, because you need your education in order to do what you want to do in life (Besides sports). It’s al-ways best to have a back up plan

if sports don’t work out the way you want it. Students treat teachers as if they are one of their buddies talking back, not doing homework, and fighting, etc. There’s a two way street in life, a good road and a bad road. Drop out rates are increasing by the year due to people tak-ing the bad road. We can change this by taking the good road and trying your best at succeeding. Trust me, it will pay off in the near future, if you work hard and stay committed to school. So the next time you see your teacher, thank her/him for the things they are doing to change our lives for the better.

My Favorite TeacherBy: Jkai Williams

My favorite teacher is Ms.Heyward because she is a very sweet, kind, car-ing person. For me, as well as others, she makes all subjects or school itself fun and interesting. She makes it so that we want to go to school. Just being in her class puts you in a joyful mood and makes you want to be suc-cessful in life. Some students may not like her because she makes you do work and may be mean at times, but that’s only for your own good! She puts the “F” in the word fun, if you ask me. I truly wish she could be my teacher for every subject. She is the best teacher I’ve had of all teachers in middle school.

Call of Duty Black Ops 2By Rashomon Smith

Call Of Duty Black Ops 2 is the best game. For you to fully experience this game, you have to have a Play Station 3. The object of the game is to hunt down Raul Meren-diaz. You also have sub missions. To understand what’s going on in the game, you have to play it 3 times. Like in Black Ops 1, this game is set in the future. The only animals that you use is a horse. You will see new machines you haven’t seen before. One machine is my favorite. It walks and it shoots. Also there’s another one that rolls and shoots small short range missile and fires bullets. There is a dragonfly that goes around shooting. Did I forget that you can turn invisible? Also, you do something similar to that mission you did on Black Ops 1 when you jump off a cliff from moun-tains. But you are in a rain forest. This is my favorite

The Best Video GameBy Jesus Carrizales

Some people like sports, some people like read-ing then there’s the people who like videogames. One of the most popular games is Call of Duty Black Ops 2. I like the game because you get to kill people, shoot zombies and have fun. You can play multiplayer matches with your friends and other people online. The game takes place in the future. There are new weapons and new army machines. You can fly in jetpacks. When you start in zombie mode, you only have one weapon. If you want to get another, you have to find boxes and buy a weapon. The box will randomly give you one. Sometimes you get good weapons, sometimes you get weak weapons. There are all sorts of weapons like: throwing knives, pistols, machine guns, and many more. It’s really bad when you get a throwing knife because you only get one. Flying on a jetpack is one of the best things that you can do in the game. Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is better than Black Ops 1 because it looks way better and has all new game maps. Every weapon on Black Ops 2 looks more re-alistic than Black Ops 1. You can also plant explosives, throw grenades, and blow up vehicles. You should go out and get this game!!

Hispanics in Durham Public School

By: Kimberly Simon

I am in the Hispanic Leaders of Tomorrow (HLT). When I went to the first meeting I was so surprised how many Hispanics were there. I wanted to find out how many Hispanics are in Durham Public School because they say that Hispanics are the leaders.

How many Hispanic students are here in Durham schools? In 2003-2004 there was 8.9% Hispanics in Durham schools. In 2006 was 13.0% Hispanics. In 2007-2008 there were 17.11% of Hispanics. In 2009-2010 there was 19.22% Hispanics in Durham Public Schools. In 2010-2011 there was 20.97% of Hispanics.

As you can see many Hispanics come to the Durham. The HLT has researched that the Hispanics students and found that they come from México and many other countries like Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Peru, Spain, and Cuba.

I was surprise at how many Hispanics joined Durham Publics Schools. It is easier for the Hispanics student now because there are more students to talk to.

Leadership Group Field Trip

By Marco De Haro I went on a low ropes course field trip with my leadership group. It was out in the coun-try. It was a bright, sunny morning. I went to my ICE class and settled in. I was very exited to be there that morning because I was leaving. The teacher brought a sack full of snacks and bags of lunches. We got on the bus and left. When we arrived, I was colder then ever. We started to play a game where you had to snatch the bandana out of the students’ pockets and I was beginning to warm up. Once you don’t have any more bandanas you had to squat and stay in your position until you got a bandana. It was a fun game. We went inside and played some more games like jumping on the carpet and who-ever is not on it has to tell a secret. It was a day full of fun. When we went outside again we went deep into the woods and climbed down a wire that was very thin. We all had to work together to solve it. Eventually we did it. It was a great teamwork game and all of us enjoyed it. We headed to the bus because it was the end of the day. We all had a good time. When we were at the school, we told the teacher what was our favorite part and we all thought it was fun.

Ms. Bibbs’ class went to Morehead Planetarium on November 16, 2012. We saw a video. It was in 3D about outer space, planets and asteroids. Way! And other planets, like planet Aldroid. While we were watching, everyone thought we were in outer space. Ms. Bibbs is a great teacher. After that we went to the NC basketball court. Of course, they weren’t playing, but it was pretty nice and big. Some people even got a picture of M.J. After that, we went to McDonalds. The class ate so much [especially me]. I ate 2 burgers, large fries, medium frappe chino with Oreo cookies. I was so hyper. I felt like I wanted to scream. That’s my fieldtrip.

You see them everyday walking around the school. They carry guns. Who are they? Our resource police officers. Today, Yaquelin and Yamileth have gone to in-terview one of Neal’s resource police officers. Since we see them every day, we thought that it would be inter-esting to get to know more about them and what they do here at Neal. We were inspired to interview a police officer because we don’t really know much about them. We went to ask one police officer questions. ….
