KOINONIA GREEK ORTHODOX ARCHDIOCESE OF AMERICA METROPOLIS OF NEW JERSEY Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter DECEMBER/ ¢∂∫∂ªμƒπO™ 2015 We Need to get Ready for the Coming Messiah . . . Dear Parishioner, The feast of the Nativity of our Lord is upon us. Soon we will gather in the Church, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to celebrate this glorious feast. Yet year after year we find ourselves poorly prepared for this celebration. So what I want to ask all of you is this;” ARE YOU READY FOR CHRISTMAS”. Normally when this question is asked we can point to a number of things that would get us ready for Christmas. Do we have our tree out and decorated? Are all the decorations and lights hung? Is our shopping completed? Did we send our Christmas Cards? Did we wrap all the pre- sents? Did we buy enough of food and drinks for the Holiday? Did we invite all the family and friends? It’s like in everything we do there is al- ways the stage of level of preparation. I’m sure everyone has a list like the one mentioned above, and like a good manager we check off the list as we go on. However, this is not what I am refer- ring to when I asked this question? “ARE YOU READY FOR CHRISTMAS”? I am referring to the spiritual aspects of the season not the enter- taining aspect. In human terms, we are so prepared in our lives to accept this Holiday season as a way to en- tertain ourselves with material things instead of concentrating on the real issue here. It’s great to have a good time, with family over for dinner, being generous with our decorations, with the dif- ferent variety of foods that your family will enjoy this Holiday season. So much to see, so much to do in just a short time. But we are forgetting something very important that this whole Holiday season is about one person, and that is celebrat- ing the Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Did that ever cross your mind? Remember the word Christmas, It has the name of Christ, “who is with us”. If you wanted to translate this word in Greek it means the “Birth of Christ”. So this so called Christmas Holidays is not all about us, but it is about Christ. It is His birthday that we are celebrating and not for our own self- ish convenience. When John the Baptist came into the picture he gave a message to all the people. He said; “We need to get ready for the coming Messiah. He didn’t say get ready to have a good time with family and friends. John the Bap- tist preaching in the desert of Judea, said; “Repent for the Kingdom of heaven is near”. This is He who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah. “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord, and make straight paths for Him. But people today even Christians when asked “Are you ready for Christmas, they imme- diately think about the Christmas tree, the lights and decorations, the shopping for gifts, and other non essential items that have nothing to do with this serious question? This question refers to, “Are you producing the right fruit in keeping with the word repentance. To define the word repentance, it means that we need to change our ways, in order to keep from making the same mistakes that we do year after year. We have gotten ourselves into a con- stant maze that we can’t get out of. We think Christmas is to bring excitement and pleasure for ourselves. If you think like that then you are not truly celebrating Christmas in the right way. If we read in Galatians 5: True confession and repen- tance leads to love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self control flowing out of our lives. How many of you have ever met a person who called themselves a Christian and yet was mean, bitter, unhappy, and unpleasant. Have we forgot- ten that Christmas is not primarily about us, our family, friends, and buying presents. BUT IT IS ABOUT CHRIST? Isn’t it easy to get wrapped up in the celebration that we forgot what it is we are supposed to be celebrating. We teach our children every year about Santa Claus, about presents un- der the tree, about reindeers and having a good time, but we forget what our true purpose of what Christmas is all about. It’s about being with Jesus on His birthday. We have birthday parties for our children, our parents, our relatives and friends, and we always find the time to share the beautiful moments to- gether. Dear Parishioners,As the Christmas season is upon us,

I find myself reflecting on the past yearand realizing how truly grateful I amfor those individuals who have helpedshape my life, my family's life and thelife of St. Nicholas Church. Christmasis a wonderful time to spread not onlygood wishes, but also to spread theword of the Lord.

And no one does that better thanour Sunday School volunteer staff. And I emphasize “VOLUNTEER.”These women and men dedicate theirSundays to spreading the word of God.It was evident this past StewardshipSunday, when a child shouted, "Topraise God!" when asked by our guest entertainer, Bubbles the Clown, why the children were there that day. Goyans, Kristina Anastasiadesand Maria Reppas accompanied the children during Bubbles the Clownmagic show and balloon making. Kristina said, “It was amazing. I wasexpecting the children to shout out, to get a balloon or to see a magicshow, but instead a little boy, shouted, ‘To praise God!’ So, Bubbles theClown made ‘Praise God’ their magic word whenever he did a magictrick. It was so special.”

Seeing the smile on my daughter's face when she told me the story, said it all. Our Sunday School volunteer staff is getting the messageacross as to why we come to church, “To Praise God.” It is that simple.

So, during Advent, the period leading up to the birth of Christ, giveyour problems to God, slow down, buy less presents and come tochurch to praise God. Because without Christ, Christmas is just a hol-low day.

May God's blessing shine down upon you and your family thisChristmas.

In Christ, Demos Anastasiades,

Parish Council President

ery year most of us are never there to worship Him and tothank Him for all the great things that are happening in ourlives. We like receiving the great gifts and blessings that theLord gives to us, but we never repay Him with our presenceat His home on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Yes, wecan all give the excuse that the Christmas season is extremelybusy, filled with much care and running around to get every-thing that we need in order. But often not with much thoughtfor the One whose birth we will be celebrating on the 25th ofDecember.

Let us use this time and date wisely, concentrating on whatwe are going to give to Christ on Christmas day. He doesn’twant your wealth, but He would love it very much if we wouldcome to Church with our family and give Him the greatestpresent meaning “You”. Let’s not forget that the Advent pe-

STEWARDSHIP NEWSStewardship Message: "Those that seek the Lord shall never be inwant of any Good Thing"

This past Sunday, November 22, 2015 was Stewardship Sunday.Thank you to those parishioners who were able to take off fromwork, or took a break from Thanksgiving preparations or theRavens game to attend the luncheon. We were truly grateful.

This year's Stewardship theme is “those that seek the Lord shallnever be in want of any Good Thing,” «ŸÛÔÈ ·Ó·˙ËÙÔ‡Ó ÙÔÓ∫‡ÚÈÔ, ‰ÂÓ ı· ¤¯Ô˘Ó ÔÙ¤ ·Ó¿ÁÎË ·fi οÙÈ Î·Ïfi.» The meaningof this year theme is simple: God wants us, His children, to do ourbest and leave the rest to him; to put our faith in him and not inourselves; to give him our problems and trust in Him. Stop fol-lowing the Kardashians and start following Jesus Christ. The Bibleshares many stories where the people following Jesus put theirfaith in Him and He performed miracles.

Father Michael with the aid of the Stewardship Committee isseeking to help all of us develop a more personal and meaningfulrelationship with God. His Second Letter to the Corinthians (9 &10) teaches us clearly, “He who sows bountifully will also reapbountifully.” God blesses those who give with generosity.

Giving generously with whatever we have; a beautiful voice toserve in the choir, patience with children to serve as a SundaySchool teacher or aide, a strong character and sound mind to leada ministry, a good ear to listen to your child as he share his day ora strong shoulder for friend to cry on. Whatever talent you pos-ses, give generously.

¢∂∫∂ªμƒπO™ 2015 K O I N ø N I ∞ 9

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is John Palasand I am one of the GOYA basketball coaches at the church. Iam honored to have the chance to speak to you today.

At first I hesitated to accept. There are so many people moredeserving than me to have the chance to speak to you aboutstewardship, and we are very lucky to have those people in ourparish. After much thought, I realized that so many people doso much for our church, the least I could do is talk for a few min-utes.

I was asked to come and speak to you from the heart, nothingmore, nothing less. So that’s what I am going to do. I want totalk to you about what our kids did for me, what I see our pro-grams do for our kids, and why it is important to continue tofocus on our kids.

Most of you see me helping at the festival or working at themany dances we have. Nothing special, nothing above and be-yond, unlike many of the other people in this room that dedicatetheir valuable time and expertise, until two (2) years ago.

In August 2013, I lost my father. He was relatively short instature, but for me he was the tallest man. He was and will al-ways be my role model. His passing was the darkest time of mylife.

About a week after I returned from his resting place in NY, Iwas approached by the GOYA advisors requesting that I helpSam Glava coach one of the teams. I had no intentions of doingso. I was a mess, far away from my mother and brother. Iwanted to be left alone to deal with my pain.

But God is almighty. He must have enlisted the help of mywife, Katina. Now those of you who know my wife, know shedoesn’t take no for an answer too easily. For about a week shewould be in my ear saying, “Yianni, you love basketball, Yianni, you’ve played organized ball for so many years, you know thegame so well and you like the kids, but most importantly thischurch needs you to serve!” So I reluctantly said yes and gavemy commitment for only one year.

I can honestly say that along with my family, it was ourGOYA kids that helped me get through the roughest time in mylife. They did more for me than I could ever do for them. Andfor that I owe my eternal gratitude to them. I will always be therefor them. Our kids made me feel alive again, a part of a teamagain, not since my team in college. I felt that I belonged tosomething worthwhile. Seeing our kids succeed is pure joy. Itruly love our kids.

After a short time in GOYA, I realized how important it wasteach them the importance of representing their church with theutmost respect in whatever they do and to make their parentsand their church proud.

Now it’s not easy, our boys are a handful as some of youknow. Our girls, on the other hand are angels, always represent-ing St. Nicholas well with such class. We should all be so veryproud of them. But the boys, well, they will test the advisors, thecoaches and their teachers’ nerves and patience, but we need toremember that they are mistake prone and that we, as elders ofthe church, must show patience and constantly steer them in theright direction. I know you have heard the phrase “it takes a vil-lage to raise a child.” Nothing of true value comes easy. Remem-ber nothing of true value comes easy.

Why the glass case in the atrium with the athletic trophies, theacademic awards, the pictures, the friendships, the service mem-bers? They are there to show all of those accomplishments ofour parish in hopes that it will be carried on to our children’schildren. It shows how proud we are.

A case in point, our boys were in their first championship

game in over 10 years. We were in a room and I told them tolook at each other and I said, “Give each other you’re all, yourunselfish play, for 32 minutes and you will be talking about thismoment 32 years from now. I didn’t say it just to get them readyto win a championship, I said it for them to understand the im-portance and opportunity that GOYA has given them to accom-plish a bond that they will carry for life. I want them to one daywalk up the steps of St Nicholas, point to a trophy case and telltheir kids that’s what Daddy was a part of and soon it will be yourturn, my child.

GOYA basketball, Golden Coins, Ellinakia, Greek school, they are the hooks to get our children involved with the church.A bond with the church is built that will carry on for the rest oftheir lives.

These programs made me realize the importance of the youthin our church and the big hearts that so many of us have makingtheir youth memorable in order for them to make it memorablefor their children.

Some of our children will graduate, and go off to school. Butmost will go on to raise their kids the same way they were raisedhere in Saint Nicholas.

My heart opens up when I see the GOYA graduates comeback to visit us such as Argyri Stakias, Niko Roros, KostaOrfanos, Manoli Giorgakis, Yianni Charalambopoulos,Protopapas, George Karayiannopoulos, and Kosta Loukas. Iknow they are good kids raised in the church, and I want the bestfor them.

As for our seniors Antonis Araviakis, George Topouzoglou,Kosta Atsidis, Nick Argetakis, Arkdiusz Gluszcz, we have donea lot of good things together. You guys along with KostaStavrakis, Mehali Argetakis and Dean and Andonis, the Palasboys are my core. You helped me get through the saddest daysof my life. You, young men, just don’t know what you mean tome. Thank you.

All you young people must understand you also have respon-sibilities in this church. Whether it’s altar, choir, Sunday school,Greek Dance, or helping at social events. By assisting whereneeded, you will bring up the energy and enthusiasm level of thewhole church. You will motivate us to work harder to make ourparish great.

You see raising our kids in the church is the gift we must passon to each generation. You may not ?fully understand it now,but you will one day.

With that said, under the leadership the last few years of Fa-ther Michael, Taki Papadopoulos, Demos Anastasiades and theboard, so many of us are excited with the positive changes thathave come about ?with our church.

The Plateia has come a long way, our Greek School has excel-lent teachers and attracts kids from all over, our gym is remod-eled, and we’ve seen a noticeable uptick in youth enrollmentacross the board.

But again, nothing of true value comes easy. We are all soblessed to be a part of Saint Nicholas. You will not find manychurches outside of NY, Chicago or Tarpon that brings ?you thetrue Greek Orthodox experience that our church brings. Thankyou, Father Michael.

You see parishioners from other churches bring their kidshere for Greek school or attend our church ?during Easter orChristmas. Ask yourselves why. We don’t have the best facili-ties or the most room, or even ample parking. But we all knowwhy they come here.

A Message from Coach John Palas, Featured Speaker at theStewardship Luncheon Held on Sunday, November 22, 2015

I wasn’t raised in this church, I’m a New Yorker. But I mar-ried the love of my life here 20 years ago ?this month and haveraised our family in this church. We live far away from my workin order for my family and I to continue to worship here. Why?Because this church and the families that belong to this churchare a jewel.

That is why we all need to be here for our children and ourchurch. If we do not make programs available such as GOYA,Greek school, Sunday school, Greek dance and all the wonderfulthings the church offers not only for our children but our elderly, the chances are slim that our children will do it for their childrenand their elderly and where does that leave our wonderful churchyears from now.

The other day, I was driving my son Andoni to school, he was

quiet didn’t say much, so I asked him why asked him why soquiet. He said, “Dad, I’m thinking of Mr. Rossi, and how beauti-ful his voice is, I grew up listening to him, and I’m sad he isgone.” A 14 year old boy who will forever remember a humbleman who brought his dedication and talents to our church. Nowwe don’t all have the voice of Mr. Rossi, but we can all have hisdedication to our church.

The people who take on the rough waves of keeping thischurch strong are special. Some of us realize it ?and help as muchas we can, but all of us that benefit from Saint Nicholas must re-alize it and help as much as we can.

Thank you, Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, healthand happiness to us all.
