1 DECEMBER NEWS 24th November 2017 Volume 17 Issue 4 MOLESCROFT PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Henry meets the Queen (see page 3 for details) Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils All the children and staff are getting ready for four special Christmas events to which you are invited. Christmas at primary age is a magical time and we look forward to sharing the wonder with you and your children. The Foundation Year are joining forces with Year 1 to present their own Christmas Family Assembly “Cock a Doodle Christmas” will be performed on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st December at 9:15 a.m. Year 2 and Y3 meanwhile are to present Disney’s stage production of Peter Pan Junior on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th December both at 9:15 a.m. These times have been chosen to hopefully help parents with the potential for flexible working to attend, rather than it being in the middle of the working day. I understand that for some of you there is disappointment that we do not admit any pre-school children to the performances, unfortunately I have seen so many events distracted by little children crying, or even running about that I made the decision a long time ago not to invite our pre-school children. I apologise for the disappointment but I believe the priority must be for the children who are performing. It is equally annoying for parents if their child’s line is lost under the background noise. Nevertheless I can offer a compromise. The assemblies are to be performed to the school as a Dress Rehearsal. If Parents/Carers wish to bring along a pre-school child or indeed would find it difficult to attend otherwise, they can attend either dress rehearsal. Please inform the office in advance if you would like to attend a Dress Rehearsal as the limited places must also be booked. The FY/Y1 dress rehearsal is on Tuesday 19th December at 9:15 a.m. and the Y2/Y3 Dress Rehearsal is on Tuesday 12th December at 9:15 a.m. In order to secure tickets for our public performances please complete the booking form at the end of this newsletter; which was also sent home in hard copy; and return it to school by Friday 1st December. Please note forms will be dated as they are received in the office and tickets issued in that order. Once the hall is full it is impossible to allocate any more tickets. There are a maximum of 2 seats available per family (at the moment). If after the initial booking period there are spares these will be released on a first come, first served basis up to a maximum of 2 more per family. Please apply directly to the school office from 8:30am on Monday 4th December. If you doubt that your child will get the form to the office please post it to school. continued overleaf ... R Christmas continued... Making sure you don’t miss out.

Meanwhile the Y4 to Y6 Christmas Celebration will be held in Beverley Minster on Monday 18th December at 7 p.m. We are calling the event a Festival of Christmas and I am sure it will be a wonderful occasion. All children from Y4 to Y6 will be performing, PLUS Y3 CHILDREN WHO ARE CHOIR MEMBERS. I am delighted to announce that this year we are being joined by KS2 children from Woodmansey CE Primary School. This is recognising the work and partnership we have with the school over this academic year. The event is to be spread throughout the central nave so all can get a good view. All are welcome and there are no tickets to book for this event. As indicated, the choir will be performing as well. Every Y4 to Y6 child will also be playing their Recorder. The main feature of the evening is to be a Christmas Musical “Once Upon a Christmas” performed by all the children in Y4 to Y6. I am grateful again to the Minster staff for facilitating the event, which will be in itself an act of some faith as we shall not be rehearsing in the Minster before the event. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. This date was advertised in the November Newsletter and clearly we hope that every KS2 child will participate. If for any reason this is not possible, please write a short note or e-mail as soon as possible. This is to ensure anyone not performing is not

rehearsed in a crucial role or pivotal position.

Again following beautiful concerts in previous years, the Orchestra plus featured soloists are to have their own special Festival of Christmas Music in school on Friday 15th December. This will commence at 2:30 p.m. and is a ticket only event. This event is not open to pre-school children. In addition The Friends will be serving festive refreshments from 1:45 p.m. Tickets must be booked using the Christmas Booking Form. Deadline Friday 1st December 2017.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS CAN YOU HELP!

Last year we asked for volunteers to help us make and decorate wreaths which we sold at the Christmas Fayre. We are making a range of Christmas decorations this year on Wednesday 29th November from 6:00 pm in the School Hall. If you and your children are interested in coming along to help or can provide any greenery cuttings (holly, ivy, spruce) please let the office know. All welcome.

Children are very welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

“I hope our mix of Christmas events will launch the Christmas spirit”

The Friends’ Association will be serving refreshments in the hall from 8:45 am on Wednesday 13th, Thursday 14th, Wednesday 20th & Thursday 21st December and from 1:45pm on Friday 15th December to guests attending the assemblies.

R CHRISTMAS DATES FOR THE SCHOOL CHOIR It’s the choir’s busiest season.

Every Thursday lunchtime the school is treated to the Sound of Music as the 70 members of the school choir meet up to practise with Mrs. Walker, Mr. Britton and Miss Baker. The choir adds greatly to the life of the school and often sings for us at special events. In advance may I pass on my thanks to the children for their work, sharing their talents and giving of their time. Also thanks to their parent/carers for ensuring the children can meet their out of school time bookings!

Sunday 3rd December 2017 at 12:30 and 1:30pm FOMS Christmas Fayre

Monday 18th 2017 December at 7:00 pm. Christmas Pageant at Beverley Minster. THIS INCLUDES Y3 CHOIR MEMBERS

Thursday 21st December 2017

Beverley Grange Residential HomeFriday 22nd December at 9:30 am. Final Assembly of 2017In addition the choir will perform at Tescos for an hour to raise money for charity. This is not a performance and we must request no audience, as five years ago our “fans” blocked the access route through the store. Y3 are similarly to sing for an hour.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MOLES ON STAGE Not only is Molescroft performing Peter Pan this year, but so is the Hull New Theatre Huge congratulations to Joe Dawson and Owen Dulson who have both landed top roles in this year’s Hull New Theatre Panto.

Joe is to play Michael and Owen John. Both boys had to get through some tough auditions. In addition a number of moles are popping up in the chorus too. I wonder if they will have to fly?..I’m looking forward to the first Mole to appear in “Strictly”!

HENRY MEETS THE QUEEN Royal duty for a Mole Henry Stephenson had the great honour of presenting flowers to HM The Queen. She was in Hull recognising the city’s status as UK City of Culture. Having visited Siemens she moved on to The University of Hull where Henry was waiting looking very smart in his blue suit. Toning well with the Queen in powder blue Henry said he felt excited, but nervous. When the Queen approached him, she smiled and thanked him for the flowers. Henry said that she looked happy.

NOW LIGHT 2000 CHRISTMAS LIGHTS A special bit of magic for our children. Continuing our tradition there will be a special assembly to welcome the decoration of the Christmas tree and the start of the school’s festive preparations. This will be held on Friday 1st December at 10:30am. Unfortunately not everyone can attend, however Governors,

Staff, Friends Association Committee Members and Volunteer Helpers are most welcome. The assembly will conclude with the lighting of both our indoor and outdoor trees. The outdoor tree is illuminated by 3000 lights provided by the Parish Centre Committee. Please note: Guests attending MUST BE ON SITE BEFORE 10am

The famous Christmas Tree Assembly, it’s a gift to the children.

R SNOW POLICY: IMPORTANT The following is taken from the school’s Safeguarding Policy and should prepare parents/carers for what to expect when it snows.

The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

Policy in Practice What the school does to assist in the event of icy weather conditions. It is not practical to grit the entire site, but as part of the gritting policy, safe routes round the site and across the South Playground have been identified and will be gritted before giving access to the site, thereby minimising the risks to children parents and visitors. The car park will also be gritted.

Children are not allowed to make slides on the playgrounds. Playgrounds are gritted if practical before 8:30am and when not, by morning break. At playtimes a decision as to whether children are to be allowed outside will be made by the senior teacher on duty in conjunction with a member of the Senior Management Team.

Children may not throw snowballs on the playgrounds. However if the field is covered by thick snow pupils may be allowed to play on the field in the snow, make snowman and throw snowballs. Those not wishing to throw snow (or indeed be hit by snowballs) should stay on the playgrounds. The school believes that playing in and throwing snow is part of a child’s life experiences.

In extreme cases the Headteacher may decide that there is no option but to close the school if there is presented a severe health and

safety risk. This done, the Chair of Governors and the local radio stations will be informed. A severe Health and Safety Risk would be presented if insufficient staff could reach the school or indeed the health and safety of staff meant that they should leave early. Due to the location of the school it is expected that the school will be able to remain open. Closing a school at short notice including closing mid way through a day poses considerable difficulties for parents and will only be taken as a very last resort.

A complete heating failure in the winter and/or a loss of the water supply would however result in the school having to close.

Good communication is essential. Parents receive a copy of specific instructions during the autumn and winter months via the monthly newsletters and the website. Children have the processes explained to them in the classroom. It is expected that parents adhere to these instructions and pass all relevant information to friends and relatives who may also come to school to bring and fetch children. Parents/Carers are asked to be responsible and plan more time for their journey, suitable footwear for having to walk further, wrapping up to keep warm etc....Parents should not expect to be able to park close to the school at these times! Parents and visitors are expected to use the gritted paths rather than walk across the snow and ice.

Snow Policy and Procedures - information for teaching and support staff In the event of disruption caused by heavy snow the prime concern of the school must always be the safety of the pupils and staff.

It is expected that all staff will make every reasonable effort to undertake the journey to school. It is appreciated that the journey may

take longer than normal and therefore some staff may not be able to arrive before the normal start of school time. In the event of severe weather, a decision to close the school for day pupils will be made by 7am. The Head Teacher will contact Radio Humberside and Viking Radio to ask them to broadcast the information.

PARENTS WILL BE INFORMED BY TEXT IF THE SCHOOL IS TO CLOSE.Updates will be posted on the Twitter section of the school’s website. www.molescroftprimary.net

In the event of the normal timetable being suspended, a programme of activities will be organised for pupils who arrive at school. Teachers and Teaching Assistants will be delegated to supervise these activities.

Rather than a full closure it is more likely that the school will remain open on a reduced capacity. In such an event, parents/carers will be asked if it is possible to make alternative arrangements for pupils. Where this is not possible the school will remain open for those who need to come to school or for those who cannot go home in the case of an unexpected early closure. As the number pupils remaining decreases, they will be moved to other classes or the hall.

The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

R Countdown to the Friends’ Christmas Fayre Donations welcome anytime On Sunday 3rd December 11:00 am to 2:00 p.m. the ‘Friends’ are hosting the annual Christmas Fayre. This is, as most of you know, the biggest fundraising event of the Friends’ year and, once again are asking for your help to make it another resounding success. There will be lots of old favourites including Santa’s grotto, tombola, chocolate tombola, jam jar tombola, many games and prizes, raffle, refreshments and many craft stalls.

The ‘Friends’ will be extremely grateful for items for any of the tombola stalls – unwanted gifts, new books and toys, chocolate and soft toys. Filled jam jars (filled with anything you like) for the jam jar tombola are now a firm favourite. Please note sweets in jars must be wrapped. We regret we are unable to accept second hand books, jigsaws, DVDs, CD’s and toys (other than cuddly toys for the teddy tombola).

We will, as ever be grateful if anyone can spare an hour or so on the day to help out on a stall, set up or clear away.

The Friends Association have also asked if the Choir will be willing to provide some festive music at 12.30pm and 1:30pm. A number of games are also being organised. Last year nearly £3000 was raised at this event. The Friends work tirelessly for the school and all our pupils benefit so much from their work.

One of the obvious benefits of the work of the ‘Friends’ is the Adventure Playground, but the Friends have purchased so much more including 84 iPads, the fully fitted kitchen, Tony Knight Centre, Curtains in the Hall & the new Maths Mastery materials The difference the Friends Association makes to the learning, happiness and wellbeing of your children is immense. OUR NEXT TARGET is 1 iPad for every KS2 child. Please note that the Fayre opens at 11:00am ... just in

time for lunch and we are catering just for you! This is the ‘Friends’ biggest event of the year. They need your support.

The Friends Association have asked once again if the Choir could perform at 12:30pm and 1:30pm.

Witness the winners of the Voice and our other talented Moles in our charity winners’ show.

CHARITY WINNERS SHOW Monday 27th November at 5pm Following the huge success over the past four years, the children who win the various talent shows in the Charity Fundraising fortnight are to perform at a special winners’ concert at 5pm on Monday 27th November in the Hall. This

will include all the children who are selected in “The Voice” who will “sing off” to be declared the winner.

Tickets are still available to adults and children for £2 each. A booking form was sent home last week.

It is possible to buy tickets directly from the office.

R GOVERNOR OF THE MONTH: Ian BlanchardFollowing the 2016 Parent/Carer survey, it was suggested that in order to help parents to get a better knowledge of the governing body, a feature should be included in the newsletter.

Thank you to Community Governor: Mr. Ian Blanchard for this month’s feature.

I am delighted to be introducing myself as a school governor at Molescroft Primary School. It’s fair to say that I am very new to this role, however I am learning, questioning and gaining lots of experiences and more importantly enjoying the positive school environment.

I am self-employed running my own education, training and mentoring consultancy. I also work part time for a new company, Athena Aspire working with the long term unemployed offering support, guidance and help. I have been involved in Adult Education for some 31 years, predominantly in the Police Service and more recently in Sport.

I have always loved all sports, particularly football and before setting up my own business I worked at The FA (Football Association) as the Head of Referees (Grassroots). I was an Assistant Referee operating in the Football and Premier Leagues and I still referee in the local Youth Leagues.

I am married to Wendy and we live in Molescroft. Between us we have 5 children and 5 grandchildren.

I am a great believer that as parents/adults we need to provide a safe, positive and an engaging environment in which all children have an opportunity to grow and learn. I am certainly learning a lot about school life, curriculums, teaching and school governance. It is important that as a school governor I am involved in supporting, helping and facilitate the development of the school.

DRESSING UP FOR CHARITY The last event of the Charity Campaign Our final day is a non-uniform day but children may also choose to be more creative and come in fancy dress. The same applies to staff! The fine for this is £1 which is the final part of the Charity Fund Raising Effort. At our final assembly for 2017 we will announce how much the children’s charity appeal has raised and also the charities that they have chosen to support. May I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the school and the pupils, and particularly for your support of the children’s Charity Fund Raising Events. The aim is, as you know to encourage the children to think of those less fortunate than themselves and to make some small sacrifice in the terms of time, effort and pocket money. It is not designed as a major assault on parental purses and wallets!

The final event for the 2017 Charity Appeal

YEAR 5 BIG SCHOOLS LEAGUE AT LONGCROFT- 6/11/17

In this their first competition of the season, Year 5 were determined to get off to a good start, eager to show their fans their footballing skills.

In their opening game they played Keldmarsh and soon found themselves under pressure. After a frenetic goalmouth scramble a lucky deflection for Keldmarsh saw them take the lead. Molescroft battled back well with great chasing and tackling from Tom Nicholas, Will Ostler and Henry Vickerman which enabled Will to score a well-deserved equaliser. Further chances from Henry and Tom were cleared by the Keldmarsh defence and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

A competitive Cherry Burton side came next and defenders Lewis Ratcliffe and Lewis Kitchin were soon battling hard clearing the ball. With both teams evenly matched play swiftly moved from end to end. Adam Todd used his strength in midfield to hold off tackles and keep possession of the ball. Good attempts by Henry and Tom failed to produce a goal and the game ended in a goalless draw.

Local rivals St Mary’s were next and Molescroft were determined to come out on top. Tom had a shot saved by the keeper and when the ball went down the other end Molescroft keeper Liam Roberts needed to pull off a brilliant save low to his left to keep his team level. Moments later Henry scored a super goal to put Molescroft ahead, much to the despair of the opposition who were unable to counterattack leaving Molescroft worthy winners.

Next opponents were St John’s and a buoyant Molescroft soon got on the attack. Tom’s shot was

saved again by the keeper but a great passing move to Will led to him scoring a brilliant goal, Molescroft in the lead once again. Sam Wray and Dominic Freeman formed a great partnership in defence and they snuffed out any attempts to jeopardise their lead. A great 1-0 win for Molescroft.

Now on a high after a couple of victories Molescroft came up against Walkington, a strong side which soon had them under pressure. The boys battled bravely at the back but Walkington were just too strong and they managed to force the ball into the net to gain the lead. After strong attempts from Henry, Will and Tom, Molescroft just could not get the all-important equaliser and they lost the game by the one goal.

Final opponents were Swinemoor and Molescroft were determined to bounce back after their last disappointment. Tom and Henry covered the pitch well, chasing back to help out where needed. Will, Adam, Dominic and Sam ( as well as the two Liams) battled well and played their part along with the ever-smiling Keeper Liam to keep the final score a 0-0 draw.

With only 9 points from their six games Molescroft will need to win more matches in the second and final round next week if they want to win the trophy. Good luck boys.

YEAR 5 BIG SCHOOLS LEAGUE AT LONGCROFT- 13/11/17

With a slight change in competing teams in this second week of matches, Molescroft found themselves with 8 matches to play and they found things pretty tough.

Walkington came first and Molescroft got off to a great start. Henry Vickerman soon had the opposition keeper under pressure but unfortunately was unable to score. At the other end defender Dominic Freeman pulled off a timely interception and then a clearance off the line to keep the scores level. Tireless chasing from Henry and Tom Nicholas and great tackling from Dom and Will Ostler helped secure the final result, 0-0.

Next opposition was Swinemoor and Molescroft found themselves under pressure from the kick off. Will chased back to help defenders Sam Wray and Dom and keeper Liam Roberts pulled off a great save to keep his team in the game. Despite all their efforts, a spell of sustained pressure sadly led to a late goal from Swinemoor and they took the winning 3 points.

A little deflated after their late defeat, Molescroft dearly wanted a victory and they pulled out all the stops against Keldmarsh. Sam started a fantastic passing move by kicking the ball to Tom, who then passed to Henry and his final shot rattled the back of the net to give Molescroft the lead. Unfortunately Keldmarsh scored a lucky equaliser, totally unexpected in the run of the game. Final score 1-1.

A strong Cherry Burton side were next and keeper Liam was soon in action pulling off save after save. Lewis Kitchin blocked tackles bravely to help keep possession but Cherry Burton were just too strong and they eventually punctured Molescroft’s defence to score the only goal of the game and earn themselves the victory.

Tickton came next and once again Molescroft found themselves up against strong opposition. Adam Todd battled well in midfield using his strength to keep possession and pass the ball up the field. Sadly Molescroft buckled under sustained pressure and Tickton scored a couple of quick goals in succession. Nevertheless Molescroft never gave up and Tom

managed to score a super consolation goal to make the final score 1-2.

A keen St Nicholas’ side were Molescroft’s next opponents and both teams fought hard for possession. Great goalkeeping from Liam saved the day for Molescroft keeping the scoresheet clean. Fearless defending from Dom led to him leaving the field with an injury to his face, but he remained on the touchline to support his team. Lewis Ratcliffe came on and slotted into the defence with ease. Neither side were able to score so the final result was 0-0.

Penultimate opponents were Minster and Lewis Ratcliffe and Lewis Kitchin started the game at the back, keen to snuff out any attacks which came their way. Keeper Liam pulled off a superb double save and a fantastic defensive interception from Henry (appearing as if from nowhere) cleared the ball away from danger. Liam, once again thinking quickly, lunged at the ball to kick it clear. However, luck was not on their side and Molescroft succumbed to a lucky last minute goal, earning no points once again.

Finally, Molescroft came up against St Mary’s and again Liam save the day, this time with a triple save, clearly a keeper on top form. Tireless chasing and tough tackling from Henry, Tom, Will, Adam, Sam and the two Lewis’ could not secure a victory and Molescroft drew their final game 0-0.

Even though they were disappointed at the end result, all the players had enjoyed the competition and relish the opportunity to do it all again. Well done everyone.

“At the end result, all the players had enjoyed the competition and relish the opportunity to do it all again.”
