DR4100 Building Blocks
• Front end protocol layer • Dedupe/compression engine • Ingest buffers • Disk storage structures • Dictionary
Webcast Dell DR4100, April, 3rd, 2013 7
Dictionary
The dictionary is a dynamic list of all the unique patterns and forms the basis for deduplication
Webcast Dell DR4100, April, 3rd, 2013 9
Software Continuous data verification* • Existing data is read back periodically • Checksums are compared to verify data integrity
NVRAM • Ensures data is protected in case of power loss
Surface Scans* • These are triggered in the event of hardware faults to report and/or correct
data inconsistencies RAID6 • All data on the DR4000 is protected by RAID6 with a hot spare. This RAID level
protects data against as many as two simultaneous drive failures.
Hardware
Data Integrity Features
* Note: Continuous data verification and surface scans are performed in the background so as to not disrupt core backup and deduplication activities

Advanced Replication Features
• Flexible configuration
• Policy based replication
• Full Synchronization
• Log-based replication
• Resync capabilities
• Link aggregation
• Snapshot-leveraged replication
• Bandwidth Throttling

Where does the DR4100 fall in the Backup portfolio?
Backup Software Purpose Built Backup Appliances
Backup software and internal storage in a pre-packaged appliance E.g. DL2300, DL4000
• AppAssure: Application protection for Windows and Linux
• vRanger: VMWare backups • NetVault: Enterprise backup solution for
heterogeneous environments • SonicWall: Server and desktop backups • Simpana: High end Enterprise backup solution • Symantec Backup Exec • Symantec NetBackup • EMC Networker • Veeam Backup • IBM TSM • CA Arcserve • Oracle RMAN
Integrated Backup Appliances
Disk backup target with built in deduplication and compression. Backup software agnostic; non disruptive deployment E.g. DR4100
