President: Mike Scovel Merry Christmas to all our mem-bers! The holidays are here and I hope everyone has a safe season. Who knows what kind of winter we will have this year. Last year it seemed like winter would nev-er go away. The New Year will be here before you know it. This year we have had a lot of the area high schools call us re-questing safety and education presentations. This is that they are calling us instead of the other way around. Whether you know it or not, these presentations get us noticed in a positive light in the surrounding communities. It seems that whenever there’s a news story about motorcycles, it’s always in a negative way. The students always seem to ask very good question in these clas-ses. They are more aware of us being out on the roads than you think. During these classes I always let them know that we not only edu-cate them, but also our political leaders as well. It’s amazing how much they are interested in how we get things done in the legislative process. This is what our organization is all about. First and foremost, let’s not for-get that this is what we do. All over the state, other chapters are facing the same challenges. Strength in numbers is what

made us what we are today. More voices fighting for our rights makes us heard more in Springfield and Washington D. C. I have heard people say that be-cause no one in Springfield is pushing a new helmet law, that’s why our numbers are dropping state wide. Some believe that if new helmet law legislation comes along our numbers will rise again. The thing we are missing the push for higher lev-els of ethanol in the gasoline supply is much bigger than we realize. This affects all of us in a much broader way. If the push for E15 comes along, our bikes will be in the shop more than on the road. Think about that. This should be our focus for 2016. The New Year will bring much more complex problems to over-come. Let’s work together for the good of all of us. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Mike “Every generation needs a new revolution.” Thomas Jefferson

than for four-wheeled vehicles. Lastly, the bill commissions a study to determine the best ways to prevent motorcycle crashes. Because it focuses only on pre-vention rather than on helmet use, this study would be the first of its kind. The House and Sen-ate will next form a conference committee to work out the slight differences between the two ver-sions of legislation before send-ing it to the President for his sig-nature, a process that is expected to be fast-tracked. Finally, at the November meet-ing we voted on our annual do-nations to motorcycle rights or-ganizations. Since revenues from Hooters & Scooters have been falling for years, we’ve reached the point where we can’t contin-ue to support these groups at past levels. We had to make some tough choices and elimi-nate some donations and give smaller amounts to the groups that we felt would do the most good for us as Illinoisans, mean-ing ABATEPAC and FEDPAC since they only support Illinois candidates. This is not to say that MRFPAC isn’t worthwhile, but our money could be used to support candidates anywhere in the US, and the consensus was we should worry about our own piece of real estate. While it’s tempting to dip into savings so

Legislative: Brian Wendholt Hail and Farewell……………. I’ve finally come to the end of the line as your Legislative Of-ficer. When I started in 2007, I had no idea I’d still be around in 2015. I have to say it’s been a great experience and one of the high points of my life, but in this past year my life isn’t my life anymore. Everything that de-fined who I was has been taken from me, motorcycling being one of those things. So it’s time to turn this job over to someone who has some skin in the game (and that’s not a road rash pun), and we have a great candidate. Since we still have an election I’m not going to name names, but I will say she’s very experi-enced and dedicated, and is go-ing to do a bang-up job for us. Now for the news……. For the first time in ages we’re going to have a long-term federal trans-portation bill! This bill has sev-eral provisions important to mo-torcyclists. First and foremost, it ends the federal funding of mo-torcycle-only checkpoints. The bill also re-establishes the Na-tional Motorcycle Advisory Council (NMAC), a panel that advises the Secretary of Trans-portation on how infrastructure issues affect motorcyclists in ways that are vastly different

Legisltive Con’t’d from page 3 we could make larger contribu-tions, there’s a good possibility we could never replace that mon-ey. If revenues are going down, the only conceivable way to re-place the savings would be to stop making any donations until the fund is replenished, and no-body wants that. Hopefully, things will be better next year, and we can be more generous again. Well, that’s it. It’s been my hon-or and one of my most cherished experiences to be able to serve all of you. Bikers are the best people in the world, and Will County Chapter is the best of the best! 10-7, Brian
