We are well and truly into the Silly Season, can anyone tell me what happened to 2011, it only seems like yesterday I was unwrapping my Daiwa reel and rod outfit, plus some other goodies. My wife has a heart attack every year when I stick my Christmas list on the fridge, well why settle for a Jarvis Walker when you can score a Shimano or a Daiwa “Eh”.

November was an absolutely fantastic month, calm seas most of the time, with lots of boats getting out there, some good reports of Spanish Mackerel still around but very patchy. If you ventured out to the outer reefs you would have been rewarded with some nice Red Emperor, plenty of Sweetlip, Coral Trout and also good size Parrot. There has been some catches of schoolie Mackerel around the two mile but you will have to work for them. Hope you all remembered that the reef fishing was closed from November 22 to 26? Fair dinkum, does this Craig Wallace know “anything” about fishing? Oh and also, you no longer have to cut the pectoral fins off Mackerel and reef fish as from November 11. I ask you, what next?

Keith Iseppi and his son Brock ventured out to the Altheas Wreck the other Saturday, did an overnighter and pulled in Snapper, Red Emperor, Moses Perch and Spangled Emperor (see picture below) for the

less adventurous try the Two Mile, Five Mile, 15 Mile, the Five and 30 Degree patches.

The estuaries have been and still will fire up, throughout December, with Flathead going off, some absolute snodgers have been landed. The best fishing was in the run up to the high tides on the full moon, as I predicted in last month’s column. December should be no different with the full moon again being the 11th, try from the 8th with high tide of 2.9 metres at 7am up to 15th with high tide of 2.9 metres at 11.30am.

Remember Barra are off limits until February 1, 2012, if you catch one get it back in ASAP the fines are huge. Mud crabs are on the move and in the later part of November some good catches where reported mostly in the deeper water.In the impoundments, Bass are firing up, especially Lake Gregory. Lake Monduran is still a bit slow on the Barra, most are below 70cm, as with all freshwater fishing dawn and dusk are the go.

I had a couple of good sessions at the Baffle, I fished over the weed beds opposite the sailing club using 2.5 inch Berkley Frenzies in silver shining/Rainbow Trout lures with double trailing hooks, the action was explosive. By lunchtime on both days I had landed up to 30 Flathead each day, kept two around 70cm for a feed and was ready to take a rest and go chasing Whiting, which I found just outside the mouth some up to 35cm, all taken on fresh yabbies. To cap it off I landed a nice Mangrove Jack at 43cm, it was yummy!

The Tradies and Ladies team decided to give it a go and what a difference!

We drink a lot of water, filtered if possible to get rid of the chlorine, but we learned that whilst in the shower the pores of the skin open up and absorb the chlorinated water like a sponge. We absorb chlorine faster and more of it through our skin in the shower, than when we drink the same water.

Since its launch ten years ago Bundaberg Wholesale Palms and Plants has been expanding and is now proud to announce that they are the authorised distributors for Oasis Spas and a range of other leisure products.

MANAGING GRIEF AT CHMANAGING GRIEF AT CHRISTMASRISTMAS Christmas may be a time when you get together with family and friends. Often when you have lost someone you love, you are reminded sometimes by the smallest of things that they are not around. This may be hard and everyone reacts differently to this. It may be that it causes people to react more sensitively to things. Everyone has their own way of coping. It is important that you look after yourself and have your way of getting through the hard bits. Here are some ideas that may help you better manage the Christmas holidays.

Allow yourself to be sad Christmas may have been a time you spent with someone you have lost. It is normal to feel sad that they are not with you. It may help to take some time out, to remember the person you love. You may want to: find a quiet spot to remember all the good things about the

person go and do something that you used to do together write a letter to the person revisit that favourite spot you had share some of the memories with someone close to you listen to music, meditate or just have alone time to

process your thoughts and memories

It is OK to enjoy yourself It may be hard to celebrate when you are missing someone you love. It is not uncommon to have a whole lot of different feelings such as sadness, guilt, or excitement. Getting together with family and close friends may be a chance to remember the good times and it's ok to relax and have a laugh. Having fun is not necessarily a sign that you miss that person any less.

Look after yourself Remembering that this may be a tough time for you is important. This may mean that you have to treat yourself with a bit of care. Avoid making major decisions until after Christmas is over. If possible, treat yourself to something you enjoy doing. It may be that you: go to the beach, go for a walk, go shopping kick a footy have a massage or spa treatment catch up with friends

Talk to someone Having someone you trust to talk to about how you are feeling may be helpful. This may be a family member, friend or youth worker. If you are finding it hard to cope with day-to-day emotional challenges then it may help to talk to someone like a counsellor.

Extend a helping hand Although you may not be suffering grief at this time you may know someone who is. It may be a neighbour or friend. Where you know there is no close family or friends challenge yourself to offer a kind helping hand. At the very least drop in or give them a phone call and wish them a seasons greeting. To some it could mean a lot for those that may feel the have no one.

Benefits of LED Christmas lights and safety tipsStringing up Christmas lights can be a torturous

task. Untangling wires, balancing on a ladder and attaching them to the house are all chores associated with this endeavour, but the biggest problem for many people is finding that mysterious broken bulb. Hours are lost and tempers flare, but this is where LED Christmas lights can show their true benefit.

LED Christmas lights use light emitting diodes rather than the traditional miniature incandescent bulbs. LEDs are much like incandescent bulbs except that they do not have a filament inside that can burn out and take the entire string of bulbs with it. Instead, they are illuminated by the movement of electrons in a semi-conductor material. Another benefit of this light source is the absence of excessive heat and wasted electricity.

You can find LED Christmas lights in all kinds of shapes and sizes. They can blink just like the regular incandescent varieties and come in a wide range of colours.

The end result is a string of lights that use a lot less electricity. They are also encased in thick plastic rather than flimsy glass, so broken bulbs and mistakenly stepping on one won’t result in an accident. As mentioned, the life of LEDs is extremely long. One last benefit is the relative thickness of the wires used for these lights, making wires less likely to get tangled.

Caring for LED lights is simple with such a long life and tough casing, you can simply roll them up and store them at the end of the holiday and fully expect to come back next year and find them still functioning.

Christmas light safety tips:• If you are unsure of what you are doing, don’t do it,

contact a licensed electrician.• Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when

setting up your lights.• Check your lights and equipment before use. Ensure

any damaged wiring, lamps or plugs are replaced.• Only use transformers and decorative lights that

have Australian Standards approval.• Don’t overload powerboards.• Where required use weather proof, energy

efficient transformers that generate low heat.• Attach cords and lighting strings to fixtures with

tape, cable ties, clips or clamps. Never use nails etc.

• Keep all electrical connections away from areas that may become wet.

• If there is no safety switch fitted to your home, use a portable one at the supply for your Christmas lights.

• Keep lights away from flammable materials.• Before driving stakes into the ground, check for the

location of any underground cables or associated underground services.

• Keep tinsel away from powerboards and wall sockets.

• For external decoration, use only products specifically designed for outdoor use.

• Check that outdoor lights are well away from overhead powerlines leading to your house.

Naturopathic Information by Rebecca Lang ND Christmas Party Hints and Tips!

With the Christmas period fast approaching, it is important to discuss how to prepare and protect our bodies and mind for possible over indulgence of food and drinks.

The GallbladderChristmas tends to be a time of

extra visits to the afterhours doctors or emergency room. An already inflamed or vulnerable gall bladder tends to not be impressed by the Christmas cheer! The gallbladder is located on the right side of the body, directly under the liver. The gall bladder may send referred pain to the chest area, just below the sternum, in between the shoulder blades and even in the big toe! The gallbladder assists the liver with the removal of poisonous substances from the blood, through bile. Gallstones can be an asymptomatic condition, but if a stone is pushed out of the gallbladder and lodges in the bile duct, this can cause nausea, vomiting and pain in the upper right abdominal region. These symptoms often arise after the ingestion of fried or fatty food.

If you have a gallbladder attack, drink one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of apple juice. This should relieve the pain, but if it does not subside, medical attention may be required. Herbs for protecting and preventing gallbladder issues include: turmeric, dandelion, barberry root, and parsley.

Alcohol and Milk ThistleThere are over 30 herbs that claim

to help strengthen the liver, but the one that has been researched the most is Milk Thistle. Full of an active compound called silymarin, which is found in the seeds of the plant, Milk Thistle has shown to help make the liver cells less permeable to toxins, preventing damage from occurring. It reduces destruction of glutathione, which helps increase the speed at which the body can reduce toxins – particularly alcohol and pollutants.

It is wise to take Milk Thistle if you feel you are suffering from toxin overload. Approximately 200mg dose three times per day is the recommended dose. Otherwise, it‘s best used as a precursor for alcohol. If you know you are going to drink on a particular day, take 300-600mg in the few days before hand. If alcohol overload sneaks up on you, however, make sure you take a 600mg dose when you get home, 300mg the morning after and 300mg in the evening, which will help to eliminate it faster. If you still feel unwell the day after, repeat the dosage.

Other HintsA Vitamin B complex will assist with

the prevention of ill effects of alcohol. If you drink alcohol regularly ensure that you have a vitamin B complex every morning and an extra one before any over indulging.

Ensure that you drink plenty of water, preferably purified, but any water is better than none. Have water in between your drinks and add plenty of ice to your drinks, including wine. Drink low carbohydrate beer.

All wine contains sulphites but look for wine that says ‘contains sulphites’

but doesn’t have any numbers listed next to it. Most wine has 220 in it but if you can find wine that doesn’t have 220 listed on the bottle, that particular preservative will not be in there, even though there is still sulphites. This will ensure less damage is done to your body. Some bottle shops may sell a particular mix that allows you to add a few drops to your wine bottle or glass which will remove the preservatives in wine. Menopausal women tend to be extra sensitive to these preservatives.

If you drink spirits, lean towards the lightest colour spirits such as vodka rather than the darker spirits. The lighter spirits contain less artificial colourings etc. Mix your drinks with water based mixes such as mineral water and lemon, tonic water, etc. Lastly, ensure you eat before drinking. This does allow a protective lining on your stomach. If you eat a meal with fat, protein and carbohydrates in it, you will absorb alcohol three times more slowly than on an empty stomach.

Tech Talk & TipsWell here we are a few weeks away

from Christmas, whatever happened to 2011? It seems only yesterday I was into a few rum and cokes with beer chasers and stuffing down turkey, chicken and Christmas pud, along with a few Ho,Ho, Hos. It’s around this time of the year I am constantly asked what sort or make of computer should I buy? So here are a few tips.

First, find a reputable computer store such as AMS Computers, explain to them exactly what you want to use it for and AMS Computers will design and build you a computer to suit your needs, not only that but they will allow for your new computer to be upgraded over the next few years.

AMS Computers only use quality new parts, they do not have a second-hand dealer’s license, they explain everything to you in language you can understand and, when the computer is opened, they will have set the whole system up, so that it is ready to plug in and play, even the internet.

AMS Computers are very, very competitive on prices for any similar system, laptop or parts. Sure you can buy cheaper, but here’s the catch, most name brand computers are built on a conveyor belt and you are the first to open them and you will be spending half of your Christmas setting your computer up with installations, doing first runs then registering them, burning recovery discs (some have up to six discs), do all the windows updates, then find and set up an email account, all this after you have removed a mass of temporary files that has been placed on your new computer to tempt you to buy and if you are not computer literate you can get yourself into all sorts of strife.

Most times AMS tells me that customers come back to them and get them to set their system up out of sheer frustration. Costs then sometimes are greater than if they had got AMS to do the whole thing, plus they are left with an inferior product. When you consider it, it takes a qualified technician about one-and-a-half hours to set up a new system; so you will understand what you are up against. AMS Computers also gives a limited big five years warranty and they stand behind their product, now that’s quality assurance. Better be quick, time is running out! Remember if you are buying for a school child you can still claim a tax refund on any new computer.

Before Christmas you will notice laptops advertised at prices from as little as $350 and full sytem desktops at Silly Season prices. Don’t be fooled by these cheap and nasty products, remember, you only get what you pay for! As for the so called “green” computers, there is no such thing. If you want to go green, buy a laptop, they are 40% more carbon efficient and four times more powerful.

Paul Otway posed the question that his printer just would not allow him to print direct off the internet. Well Paul, your printer is an Epsom 630 and to go into the faults here would fill a page, unfortunately a technician needs to look at your printer and its software to see, and be certain, why this is happening. It’s obvious that something is set up wrong and without seeing the printer I can only guess. Drop into AMS Computers and they tell me they will fix it for you.

This time of year nieces, nephews,

grandkids and all the relatives do the rounds and it’s always nice to see them. Sometimes it’s even nicer when they have left, so here’s a couple of tips to save you some money.

Number one - the first thing grandkids do is head for your “computer” they get on the internet, download programs saying you need this grandad or venture onto sites that are a no go, teenagers are the worst. You know what they say; a little knowledge is dangerous that’s a teenager! Next thing you have viruses, glitches, blue screens and freeze ups, so here’s what you do, first put on a password something you WILL remember like “peace of mind” or the make of your car etc. then simply say you forgot your password! Next pull out the power cord and say it’s not working, there’s an on/off switch on the back of your tower turn that off, you will be amazed how a game of back yard cricket makes for happy families. Make this Christmas a NO computer Christmas.

Isn’t it great to live in Bundaberg where it is perfect for outdoor living and entertainment? Many people are going one step further and setting up their outdoor kitchens, incorporating herbs and edible plants in the area along with the BBQ, pizza oven and prep areas. Such a great idea! Nothing like fresh herbs ready at hand.

It is so easy to incorporate edible plants into your design. Pots of all shapes and sizes can be as fun and creative as you like. Many herbs are only shallow rooted and can thrive in small areas. A bowl of parsley, thyme and sage ready for the barbie or a herb trough of oregano, basil and chives ready for any pizza or salad.

Just go one step further and why not plant a lemon scented myrtle. A beautiful flowering shrub, also useful as a screen and the leaves are edible, being used for fish or many gourmet recipes. An olive tree, lychee or citrus can all make excellent feature trees.

Society garlic often used as a border plant is all edible and lemon grass to fill in a corner. Nasturtiums can also look good spilling over a pot and the flowers are used in salads. Chillies can look really colourful and are easy to grow. Not to forget the many dwarf fruit trees, nectarines and citrus look very classy. A bit of a favourite is the chocolate mint just for something different.

When setting up your area take note of how much sun your plants will receive. Most herbs need at least a half a day sun. In the heat of summer, afternoon

shade is good for shallow rooted plants. If your plants are stretched they will need to be moved into more light. Use good organic soil with plenty of fertiliser. Feed your plants so they can feed you.

Water well, provided there is good drainage. Make sure the old boot you planted your oregano in has a hole in the bottom.

Most importantly select the plants you are likely to use and use them as often as possible.

This continuously prunes the plant and keeps you aware of any thing that needs attention.

An outdoor kitchen is easy, fun, useful and healthy.

Honey Glazed HamIngredients:

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180C (moderate). Using a sharp knife, cut

through the rind 6cm from the shank end. To remove the rind from the ham, run your thumb around the edge, under the rind and carefully pull back. Using a sharp knife, remove and discard some of the excess fat from the ham.

2. Using a sharp knife, score the fat with cuts crossways and then diagonally to form a diamond pattern. Don’t cut all the way through to the ham or the fat will fall off during cooking. Press a clove into the centre of each diamond.

3. To make the glaze, combine all the ingredients in a bowl and spread carefully over the ham with a palette knife or the back of a spoon.

4. Place the ham on a rack in a deep baking dish. Add 2 cups water to the dish. Cover the ham and dish securely with foil, and cook for 45 minutes.

5. Remove the ham from the oven and remove foil. Increase the heat to 210C (hot). Return the ham to the oven and bake for 20 minutes, or until the surface is slightly caramelised. Rest for 15 minutes before carving.

Cherry PavlovaIngredients:

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 190 degrees celcius (normal

not fan oven), line baking tray with baking paper and mark 24cm circle.

2. Use an electric mixer to beat egg whites until firm (A pinch of salt will help). Add sugar, 1 tbsp at a time, beating constantly, until thick and glossy. Fold in vinegar and vanilla essence. Spoon large dollops of meringue inside circle on baking tray. Smooth into shape of pavlova with spatula. Mark decorative grooves around side and indent top to accommodate filling.

3. Reduce oven temperature to 150 degrees celcius. Bake pavlova for 1 1/2 hrs. If pavlova browns too quickly, reduce heat. (Avoid opening door and losing heat as it will cause the oven element to turn on and risks browning the pavlova). Turn off oven and leave pavlova to cool in oven with door slightly ajar.

4. For the cherry syrup cook cherries with sugar and water on a medium heat for 5 mins until cherries are soft. Puree in a blender, rub through a sieve. Return to a saucepan and cook on a high heat for another 5 mins, until thick and syrupy.

5. Place pavlova on serving plate and cover with whipped cream.6. Decorate with whole cherries and cherry syrup OR your favourite fruit in season drizzled with

passionfruit pulp.
