Maling Ebrahimpour is the Dean and Professor of Supply Chain in the College of Business at The University of Rhode Island. He is an active researcher and has authored or coauthored over 100 articles that have been published in scientific journals and proceedings. Most of his work focuses on various issues of quality in both service and manufac-turing companies. He received his PhD in busi-ness administration from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has served on the editorial review board of several journals, including Journal of Quality Management, Journal of Operations Management, and Inter-national Journalof Production Research. attention that the DSI’s US based regions

This workshop is aimed at providing an overview of
predictiveanalyticsandthestateofresearchusing
predictiveanalyticsoncomplexandlargedatasets.
Therearetwobroadcomponentstotheworkshop.
First,theworkshopwilldiscussgeneraltopicsrelated
topredictiveanalyticssuchasthedifferencebetween
explanatorycausalmodelingandpredictiveanalytic
modelingofdata,characteristicsofbigdata,andgen-
eralmethodsthatcanbeusedforpredictiveanalytics.

TheNASAMichoudAssemblyFacilityisaworld-
classmanufacturingfacilityprovidingvitalsupportto
NASAexplorationanddiscoverymissions.Michoudis
uniqueinthatitcontainsoneofthelargestproduction
buildingsinthenation.Itsverticalassemblybuilding
provedacriticalresourceforstackingcomponentsof
thespaceshuttleexternaltank,whichwasconstructed,
testedanddeliveredtoNASA’sKennedySpaceCenter
byMichoudthroughouttheSpaceShuttleProgram.
Between1979and2010,thefacilityproduced136
tanks;onlyoneofthesewasneverusedforspace-
flight.
Today,Michoudsupportsseveralmajorprojectsfor
America’snextgenerationofspacetransportationve-
hicles,includingNASA’sSpaceLaunchSystem(SLS)
heavy-liftrocket,managedbyMarshall,andtheOrion
spacecraft,managedbyJohnsonSpaceCenter.Mi-
choud’shighlyskilledworkforceismanufacturingand
assemblingOrionandalsowillbuildthecriticalcore
stageoftheSLS,whichisintendedtotakehumanex-
plorersfartherintooursolarsystemthaneverbefore.
ParticipantswillleavetheNewOrleansMarriottat12
noonandreturnbefore5pmonFriday,November22.
Tourwillbelimitedto45participantsonafirst-come,
first-servebasis.Transportationto/fromtheconfer-

DSI BOARD APPROVES NEW REGIONAL CHARTERS, COMMITTEES RECEIVE CHARGES

ton.ImmediatePastPresidentJohnny
Rungtusanatham handed off the gavel
tonewPresidentJanetHartley.Hartley
welcomednewandreturningBoardmem-
bersandpromisedanexciting,fulfilling
andchallengingyearahead.
First on the agenda was the DSI Board
Orientation,offeredatthestartofeach
newBoardterm.ExecutiveDirector
Landrum walked the Board through the
orientation,whichremindseachmember
oftheirfiduciaryresponsibility,expecta-
tions while serving on the Board, and
rulesforconduct.Itisaninformative
andimportantsession,asBoardactions
are vital to the Institute’s well-being and
sustainabilityandimpacttheInstitute’s
notforprofitstatus.
VicePresidentofFinance,Alan
Mackelprang,presentedthe
Institute’sStatementofFinancial
PositionandProfit&Lossreport
forthecurrentfiscalyear.Mem-
bershipincomeisonbudgetand
expenses are in alignment with
projectednumbers.DSIshould
closeoutitsfiscalyearinJune
meetingandexceedingitsbud-
getednetrevenueof$75,000.

Thoseadditionalexpenserequestswere
discussedandapprovedbytheBoard.
Inaddition,arequestandapprovalwas
granted for additional monies for a web-
site“refresh.”
President Hartley reviewed DSI’s Five
YearStrategicPlanandthenpresented
thedraftStandingandAdHocCommit-
teechargesfortheBoardtoreview.Each
committeechargewasdiscussed,edited
andapproved.NewAdHocCommittees
formedthisyearincludetheCodeof
ConductandProfessionalOrganization
Relationscommittees.(Note–allcom-
mitteesandchargescanbefoundonthe
DSIwebsiteunderDiscoverDSI–Lead-
ership–Committees.)
Priordiscussionsontheregionaldraft
chartersandtheirprogresswasofferedto
thenewBoardmembers.Duringthepast
year, DSI regions and the Board have
beenworkingtogethertofinalizecharters
foreach,toenabletheircontinuancewith
DSIundertheBylawsenactedinJulyof
2018.Theone-yeargraceperiodforeach
regiontocontinuetheirlegaloperations
withDSIwithoutacharterexpiresJuly
2019.MWDSIandSWDSIbothpresented
draftcharterstotheBoardpriortothe
Maymeeting.Theyreceivedapproval
and were legally granted permission to
continuewithDSI.ChartersfromNEDSI,
SEDSIandWDSIwereexpectedsoon
aftertheMayBoardmeeting.(Update:

NEW MEMBERSHIP RATES IN EFFECT JULY 1
AswasreportedintheMayissueofDeci-
sion Line, the Board previously approved a
membershipduesincreasetobeeffec-
tiveJuly1.Thisincreasewasinresponse
toincreasedoperationalcosts.Thenew
membership rate for a Regular Category
Amemberis$175,$90forEmeritusCat-
egoryA.CategoryBandCmemberswill
alsoseeanincrease.Studentscontinue
to enjoy free membership, however there
isnowasmallstudentverificationfee
applied at registration and valid for a two-
yearstudentmemberterm.Itshouldbe
noted that DSI membership dues have not
beenraisedsince2009.
The GrowthZone membership manage-
ment system, implemented in January
of2018,providesfordetailedtrackingof
membership, easier management of re-
newalsandaquickandefficientpayment
system.Italsoallowsmemberstoview
andprintcopiesofalltheirpaidinvoices
since2018,includingconferenceregistra-
tions.
As a reminder, DSI membership runs on
a12-monthcycle.MostDSImemberswill
be ready for renewal during the summer or
earlyfallmonths.Theprocessforrenewal
isasfollows:
1. Approximately30dayspriortothe
membership renewal date, members
willreceiveanemailnotificationthat
theirmembershipisreadyforrenewal.
Acopyoftheinvoiceisattachedtothe
email, offering easy payment via a link
embeddedintheinvoice.Theinvoice
will also be found in the members’ DSI
memberportal,undertheBillingtab.
2. Iftheinvoiceisunpaidafter30days
fromtheduedate(dateofinvoice)the
memberwillreceiveanemailreminder.
3. Iftheinvoiceisunpaidafter45days,
thememberwillreceiveonemore
reminder.
At60dayspastdue,thesystemwill“drop”
themembershipandwriteofftheinvoice
asunpaid.Thustheinvoicewillnolonger
beopenforanypayment.Shouldthe
memberwishtobecomecurrentagain,
theymustfollowtheJOINprocessasthe
oldinvoiceisnolongervalid.Thesystem
will tie the new membership with the past
one, thus preserving the membership his-
tory.

ogyused“WaronInventory”describeshowseriousthe
companyisintacklingitsinventoryproblemsfeatur-
ingajust-in-time/totalqualitycontrolsetofconcepts/
practices.Throughouttheearlierchapters,theauthor
hasmanagedtouse“lingo”thatisverycaptivatingfor
thereader,andevidentlyforthecompaniestoo.For
instance,hereferredtotheproductlineintermsof
stars(high-volume,critical),starlets(moderate-volume,
essential),andextras(notthatimportant).
From the very start, the author has managed to
capturetheinterestofreadersbypresentingsome
unknownorlittle-knowncompaniesandhowwell
theyareworkingontheirprocessimprovement.One
suchcompanyisAhlstromPump,Finland,whichhas
donearemarkablejobbysimplifyingprocessesand
eliminatingwaste.Theirfacilityisequippedwithstate
ofthearthighlyflexiblemachinesonasolidconcrete
floor,thatarepaintedwhitetodetermineleakedoil
andgrease.Eventhoughtheauthorhaspraisedthe
efforts of Ahlstrom Pump, but was still able to iden-
tifyopportunitiesforimprovement.Thisisthetrend
throughout the book, where the author has highlighted
strengths,obstacles,andopportunitiesforimprove-
menttoeachcompany.Some
casesaremerebriefbullet
point notes, and some are
detailed notes supported by
flowdiagramsandcharts.The
authorhasbeencriticalofthe
leanflowofallcompanies,es-
peciallycellularmanufacturing,
whichhasbeentheprimary
focusoftheauthorthrough-
outthebook.Companieslike
RusellAthletic,accordingto
theauthor,requiredmassive
conversiontocellularmanu-
facturinginordertobemore
flexible,andtoreducelead
timesandoverheadcosts.One
feelsfascinatedknowinghow
thecompaniesinthe1980s
acknowledgedthesignificance
ofprocessimprovementandwerestrivingwithintheir
capacitiestoachieveit.
Goingontothesecondpartofthebook,thecase-
letsshiftfromafantasticgraspandexecutionof
flowmanufacturinginthe1980s,toadiversemixof
undecidedandforwardmovingeffortsinthe1990s.
Part2ofthebookcomprises36TourReportswhich
includes30fromUS,5fromothercountriesand
1fromacompanywithplantsonbothsidesofthe
USborder.Theauthorstartsthesecondpartwitha
caseletonHonCompany,1990,whichisanupdate

amazedonhowimpressivelythecompanyadopted
theworldclassmanufacturingtechniquesandworked
quietaggressivelyonKanbanimplementation.Another
attentioncaptivatingcaseinthesecondsectionisof
EastBayGenerators,basedinNorthOaklandCalifor-
nia,whichtheauthorvisitedin1990.Thecompanyis
aremanufacturerofgenera-
tors, alternators, starters,
carburetorsandotherauto
electricalpartsfortheafter-
market.Thissmall,notvery
wellrenownedcompanyhad
a remarkable turn-around
that heavily involved simple,
largelyvisualmanufacturing
practices.Kanbanpracticed
inasimpleyetaveryeffec-
tive way using empty boxes
torefillthepartsisjust
mesmerizing.Asthereader
goesonthroughthissection,
itbecomesevidentthatthe
companiesinthe90swere
maturingintheirprocess
improvementefforts.Theauthorstillmaintainsacritical
tone throughout and points out the weaknesses, even,
fortheprocessimprovementchampioncompanies.
An example of this is Johnson Control, a globally
expandedtechnologyandmultiindustrialfrontrunner
servingawiderangeofcustomersinmorethan150
countries.TheauthorvisitedtheHollandMichigan
Plantin1999andwasappreciativeofthestepstaken
bythecompanyforflowmanufacturing.Beinganearly
birdadopter,JohnsonControlplacedinworld-class
leanagendathroughoutitsplants.However,theauthor
believesthatthecompanystillhasmanyopportunities
forimprovement.Forinstance,theplanthasalotof
equipmentandpropercareofwhichrecommendsan
effectiveTotalProductiveMaintenanceinplace.
Movingontothelastsectionofthebook,theauthor
presentsacaseonGilletteAndoverManufacturing
Center,visitedin2000.Theauthorinmanycase-
lets has rewritten the report and elaborated points
formorenaturalunderstandingofthereader.Gil-
lette’scaseisoneofthem.Thisuniquecasegives
aninsightofhowbureaucracycanbeahurdleinthe
implementationofconversionprocess.Althoughthe
localmanufacturingteambeingstronglyinfavorof
conversiontocellmanufacturing,thehighermanage-
mentleveldidn’tshowmuchinterestandtheplan
diedout.Thementioned
Gillettefacilityisthelargest
of Gillette’s toiletries plants,
occupying594,000sq.ftof
building.Thefacilityhasim-
mensechallengesbecause
ofmanySKU’srequiring
frequentproductchange-
overs,whicharecostly
andsourcesofcontroland
qualityissues.Theauthor
highlighted opportunities
of improvement for the
plant by implementing pilot
projectsandstepbystep
conversionofcellmanufac-
turingthroughreplacement
offillandpacklineswith
twoormorecompactcellsdedicatedtoitsownnarrow
familyofSKUs.Finally,theauthorsuggestsmakinga
bigdealoutofpilotconversionsbymakingtheirsuc-
cessesstandoutandpresentastrongcaseinfront
ofseniormanagementformorecapitalinvestmentto
fullyimplythecellconversionprocess.Unfortunately,
as the author mentions in the epilogue, top-level sup-
portdidnottakerootandsoonthedirectorofmanu-
facturingresignedtoo.
Justliketheprevioustwosections,manycaseletsin
thefinalsectionarenothinglessthanexciting.Asmall
manufacturerR.WLyall,averysmallfamily-owned
manufacturerofpipesanddistributionproductsfor
natural gas/LPG Industries, has an impressive story of

leaderinluxurycarmanufacturing,achievingsales
recordseveryyearfailedtoimpresstheauthordueto
itsovercomplicatedproductionlines.
SectionthreeendswiththecaseonElectroImpact.
Thiscasepresentsanastonishingsubstitutetothe
kindsofprocessimprovementbroughtupinallother
100caselets.Thisunorthodoxmanufacturerlikestogo
itsownway.Thecompanyproducesawidevarietyof
automationandtoolingequipment,usuallyofmassive
sizes,foraerospacemanufacturers.Themostaston-
ishingfeatureofthefacilityisthattheworkissetupas
dedicatedtoacustomerprojectwith80%machining
throughoutsidecontractors.Theauthorfindsitasone
ofthemessiestplantsthathehadevervisited,which
he also mentions in the thank you letter to the plant’s
chiefofstaff.
Thisbookisundoubtedlyoneofthemostdifficult
onesIhaveevercomeacrosstowriteabookreview
of.Eachcaseletisanexperiencedistincttoeach
company,withitsdiscreteproblemsandsolutions.
Furthermore,thereaderattimesfinditchallengingto
understandtheprocessesinsomeofthesectionsas
thedetailsaretoobriefforthereadertovisualizethe
exactsituationoftheconcernedfacility.Theauthor,
insomecaseshastriedtoincludeinformationabout
thecompany,products,plants,competitorsbyinsert-
ingchartsandpictures,butfewchaptersarefarfrom
beingcomprehensiblebythereader.Nevertheless,
the reader does get the gist of the efforts, opportuni-
ties,andweaknessesoftheflowmanufacturingbythe
mentionedcompaniesinthebook.Topicsincluding
JIT,totalqualitycontrol,cellmanufacturing,Kanban
implementation,cross-training,andjobrotationofthe
workforcecanbedeliberatedforeachcompany.
Overall,Iwouldratethisbookveryhighandrecom-
mendittostudents,instructors,researchers,and
corporateworkersinbusinessandengineering.As
mentioned in the book, with a lot more than several
caseletstodrawfrom,thereaderswillfindrichexam-
plesofsimilarcompaniesandprocesseswithintheir
ownindustriesandareasofresearchinterests.With
thisreasonalone;jobwelldoneinmakingitworthfor
metopushthroughthisgreatresource!

name(s), affiliation(s), and complete contact information including mailing address(es), telephone number(s) and e-mail address(es).
2. The submission to be uploaded must be in PDF format. The submission should include the title and, optionally, a one-paragraph abstract between the title and the body of the paper. The names of the author(s) should NOT be included.

STUDENT PAPERS— The 2020 SE DSI Student Paper Competition welcomes papers written by Undergraduate, MBA, and/or Ph.D. students. Papers submitted to any of the three Student Tracks must be solely of student authorship and will be subject to the same review process as regular papers. Student papers must be submitted on-line by November 29, 2019 using the paperless submission process. All student papers accepted by the reviewers will be scheduled on the program. The judges of the Student Paper Competition will evaluate the combined quality of each student paper/presentation and recognize the outstanding ones at the meeting's luncheon on February 14st. The Submission Deadline for Student Papers is November 1, 2019.

COMPETITIVE PAPERS—The submission of a competitive paper or abstract for review means the author certifies that the paper is original and has not been previously copyrighted, published, presented, or submitted for publication or presentation. For an accepted paper to be published in the proceedings, at least one author must register for the meeting and present the paper during the meeting. Outstanding papers will be selected and recognized at the meeting luncheon on February 14st. The Final Submission Deadline for Regular Papers and Abstracts is November 1, 2019. SYMPOSIA, TUTORIALS, AND WORKSHOPS—Proposals for symposia, tutorials, and workshops must be at least two (2) pages long describing what you intend to do and why it would be of interest and importance to members of the Institute. Submissions should follow the general guidelines presented below although considerable latitude will be allowed as to the content and format of these sessions. You must provide your own specialized computers or other equipment needed for the session (SEDSI will provide LCD projectors). All participants in symposia, tutorials, and workshops must register and attend the meeting.
PROCEEDINGS—The SE DSI will publish electronic Proceedings online containing all papers presented at the meeting as well as summaries of all symposia, tutorials, and workshops. Authors are responsible to adhere to the standards outlined online for publication in the Proceedings. Notification of acceptance or rejection should occur in December of 2019, and accepted papers will be due in final Proceedings form no later than Jan 3, 2020. VOLUNTEERS—Individuals interested in participating in the 2020 Program by serving as a reviewer, discussant, session chair, or in some other role should contact the Program Chair at the address indicated below. A Volunteer form is available on the SE DSI web site: www.sedsi.org. PLACEMENT SERVICE—A Placement Service will be provided at the meeting at no cost to the applicants or employers.
