Q Help! My beige great room looks

like the kitchen threw up oatmeal. How can I make it more exciting?

—shelli striker green, via Facebook

A Think of beige as a backdrop for a spectacu-lar room; all you need is a little contrast. A dark sofa or colorful drapes will pop against light walls, and a large painting or a grouping of art adds instant personality. Or, rev up a neutral room with wallpaper (see left) on an accent wall.

Q How do I decorate an

empty entryway that has pretty wood floors and not much else?

—Carol Moore Whitmore, via Facebook

A This is the first- impression area, but no one lingers for long—so impact is key! Start from the ground up by laying down a multitone carpet in cool shades like blues or grays to contrast with the warmth of the floor; select one of those colors and use it to paint the wall. Then set the stage for a beautiful scene with a narrow console table for mail and keys, a pair of tall buffet lamps (see below), and a metallic-finish mirror.
