PUGET SOUND EARLY BIRDS SEPTEMBER 2013

Fall is upon us already with some of the Alder’s leaves turning yellow and starting to fall. Where did the summer go, although it probably has been one of the nicest ones we have had. This is the first year that I can remember for a long time where the top on the T Bird has been down since spring. It will seem a little strange when we have to put it up. Our last tour put on by the Thorne’s was wonderful, a great turnout and, of course, the day offered clear skies and sunshine. I didn’t realize there so many back roads and small towns. I had heard of many of them, but I had never been there.

The October Event is in the works. The Callards and Niemis are working on a nice event to wrap up the touring season before the November rains set in. There will more in the next newsletter.

Our Editor advises that the next newsletter will be an abbreviated one and will have a guest writer for the main article.

As part of the Puget Sound Early Birds community outreach, PSEB hosted a car show for the residents and staff at Crista Shores Retirement Center. Steve Reiland, an employee at Crista and Tai Chi instructor, worked with Duane and Nancy Niemi, who is also a Tai Chi instructor, to set up the event. Nancy even put on a Tai Chi demonstration for all.

The Puget Sound Early Birds had a good turnout with the Roupes, Austins, Baylers, Niemis, Dick Daugherty, Gordon Thorne and Cheryl McCurdy. In addition, Ted Austin lined up some members of OVAC, who also participated. We thank them for their assist.

Food, fun, and a good time was had by all and the weather gods smiled on the event.

way to Gig Harbor, picking up Ray and Darleen Rohwein in Silverdale. Gordon had given great back road directions to their home, so those of us from “the north” had a wonderful drive “through the woods.”

On our arrival at Gordon and Judy’s home, we noticed other birds (including our feathered friend to the right) had already arrived. What fun! A delicious continental breakfast awaited us, including Gordon’s homemade pecan sticky buns. Other pastries, juices, coffee and tea rounded out the lovely repast. Sunshine was the word of the day. How does it get any bet-ter than sitting on a deck, watching the boats float by while eating and enjoying friends?

At the appointed time, Gordon rallied the troops for instructions. With turn by turn directions in hand, we were off on what turned out to be an almost 61 mile journey (to go 16 miles as the crow flies) through parts unknown. The drive went well as the group reformed from time to time and again. Our first stop for a very necessary “potty break” was at a lovely park featuring a 100 year old English wal-nut tree, which are not common in these parts. Thereafter, though, things went slightly awry! In-struction #23: “Go through second roundabout, taking third exit to head north onto Canterwood Blvd” caused considerable confusion. That spot inspired some humorous tales of woe as the day progressed. Thank goodness for a number of opportunities to reform the caravan!

It truly was a lovely morning and the route offered many beautiful sights. All in all a wonderful oppor-tunity to enjoy a genuine top down day. After 28 fun to navigate miles along mostly back roads, we arrived at the Olalla Valley Vineyard and Winery, where we were warmly greeted by proprietors Joe and Konnie Serka. Waiting for us were the Callards who had taken the ferry to meet us in route.

While it was fun to caravan along the route, and it was equally pleasant to spend some leisure time in that beautiful setting where we sampled the very nice wines. The patios, the fountain, the gardens and the almost-ready-for harvest vineyard made for a delightful stroll while doing what we do so well, en-joying each other’s company.

Joe and Konnie Serka had a great time with the PSEB’ers. They loved the cars and even ‘hinted’ about a chance to ‘sit’ in one. PSEBers, being a very hospitable group, said ‘sure pick one”. Well, they liked the Starmist Blue ones (there were two). So, they climbed in the one with the ‘Route 66’ seat covers and said, “I like this more than my old Mercedes”. Who knew they were car buffs. After a few ‘photo-ops’, reality hit and they had to return to work.

Promptly at 1:00 PM, Gordon gave the call to get back on the road to head further north via South-worth Drive through Colchester and Manchester and other small towns. The drive along the Sound offered views of Blake and Bainbridge Is-lands. We saw ferries, ships, and pleasure boats aplenty before we turned south on Bay Street, through Port Orchard and on to our lunch destination, McCormick Woods Golf Club.

The patio overlooking the golf course was set and ready for us under the bright sunshine. As we all took our seats in small groups at one of the many tables, the servers arrived promptly to take our drink and later, our lunch orders. After a leisurely lunch it was time for the inevitable good-byes as we headed for the parking lot.

For those that know Dennis and Pat Hasard, it was great to see them again. And for those ‘newbies’, it was great to meet them.

The Long Distance Award again goes to Jaime and Marsha Marcelo (with Jim Stott close behind), who like several others travels from the east side. It was great to see all on such a wonderful day.

The day’s fun wasn’t quite over, though. Dave Demory, having joined us for lunch, pulled his car up with the spectacular (and historic) teardrop trailer in tow. We T-birders do have plenty of interests and hobbies beyond our baby birds, and Dave was happy to introduce his . . . (see page 7).

All in all it was a great day with the turnout, the weather and activities combining to make a memorable outing. Thank you Judy and Gordon! But the question remains, how do you guys pick such wonderful weather and arrange for the bald eagle to show up at the pre-appointed time? I guess we’ll never know.

Thinking the day’s activities were over as we made out way into the parking lot, we could not help but notice what we quickly learned was Dave Demory’s1945 “KIT” teardrop trail-er. It was a whole new realm to most of us. Besides the in-door sleeping and storage area, the trailer boasts a complete outdoor kitchen at the rear of the trailer where a small plaque tells a bit of its past with its original owner, Warren Miller, ski and snowboarding film maker. The plaque reads “Warren and his buddy lived in this 4' x 8' trailer from mid-November to May. It was as cold inside as outside and they stood in the cold night air to cook dinner.”

Warren Miller, founder of Warren Miller Entertainment, pro-duced, directed, and narrated ski and snowboarding films until 1988. His credits include over 750 sports films, several books, and hundreds of published non-fiction stories re-nowned for their stunning photography, narrative humor, and the impressive talents of athletes.

Marilyn Monroe figured prominently in the décor, and if you looked closely you could see portraits of George and Martha Washington on a side wall.

Having wowed the PSEBers with this fun attraction, Dave and friend, Judy, traveled to join their Teardrop Club campout at the annual LeMay at Marymount annual open house. Seeing Dave’s other “toy” was a fun way to end a day of wandering around the southern Kitsap.

Safety Tips Safety Tips —— Tire AgingTire Aging

What is meant by “tire aging”? The structural integrity of a tire can degrade over an extended period of time. When that occurs, tires are more prone to catastrophic failure, which could, at best, cause an inconvenience, or, at worst, lead to a crash. The degradation of a tire occurs over time, mostly the result of a chemical reaction within the rubber components. That aging process can be accelerated by heat and sunlight.

Are some vehicles more prone to tire aging problems? Tire aging is generally not an issue with vehicles that are driven regularly. Tires will wear out and need to be replaced before aging becomes a safety concern. But those with occasional use - like recreational vehicles or collector cars, for example, could be susceptible. The spares on all vehicles also are prone to aging problems because they seldom get used or replaced. In those instances, the structural integrity of the tire may be weakened - and potentially hazardous even though the tire still has a great deal of remaining tread.

How do you detect when tires have become unsafe? The effects of aging may not be visibly detectable. Since there is no standard test to assess the serviceability of a tire, even an inspection performed by an expert may not always reveal the extent of tire deterioration. Vehicle owners are therefore encouraged to have their tires checked after five years of use, then annually thereafter.

When does NHTSA recommend that tires should be replaced? While tire life will ultimately depend on the tires’ service conditions and the environment in which they operate, there are some general guidelines. Some vehicle manufacturers recommend that tires be replaced every six years regardless of use. In addition, a number of tire manufacturers cite 10 years as the maximum service life for tires. Check the owner’s manual for specific recommendations for your vehicle. Remember, it is always wise to err on the side of caution if you suspect your vehicle has tires that are over six years of age.

How do you determine the age of a tire? The age of the tire can be determined by checking the tire identification number on the sidewall of the tire, which begins with the letters "DOT". The last four digits represent the week and year the tire was manufactured. On newer model tires, the tire identification number is on the outside sidewall; older models will have the identification information on the inner sidewall.

• Tires manufactured since 2000, the week and year the tire was produced is provided by the last four digits of the Tire Identification Number.

• Tires manufactured before 2000, The Tire Identification Number for tires produced prior to 2000 was based on the assumption that tires would not be in service for ten years. While they were required to provide the same information as today’s tires, the week and year the tire was produced was contained in the last three digits. The 2 digits used to identify the week a tire was manufactured immediately preceded a single digit used to identify the year.

Are there other or contributing reasons for tire failure? Yes, poor maintenance is often cited as a cause of failure. Tire failures can be caused by a number of factors such as under or over-inflation of tires, overloading of vehicles, road hazards, improper maintenance, structural defects, and improper installation, in addition to tire aging.

THE PUGET SOUND EARLY BIRDS REACHES OUT TO ITS COMMUNITY AND NEIGHBORS

November 21st to December 20th: Toys for Tots kicks off in Silverdale. Legend Harley-Davidson of Silverdale is continuing its support of Toys for Tots, sponsored by the Marine Corps Reserve and coordinated by Marine Corps League, Olympic Peninsula Detachment 531. Puget Sound Early Birds will again participate. So, start thinking about donating unwrapped gifts or cash donation to help those in need.

For more information, contact Duane Niemi - Please call Duane or Nancy @ (H) 360-297-1245, (C) 360-860-0059, or (C) 253-212-6714 or email [email protected]

Kitsap County Food Bank Coalition: Many of our neighbors are unaware of the hungry in our area. Kitsap County Food Bank Coalition is a great resource for those who wish to help in their area. Their website, http://www.kcfbc.com/food_bank_list.html, provides eight food banks for those who wish to help. Contact information: http://www.kcfbc.com/contact.html.

Helping low income families with school supplies: Getting our kids a good education so they can compete in the world of tomorrow starts early. However, many kids never get out of box because they can’t afford the necessary school supplies to help them. Gas prices are high again this year, which adds to the cost for those who are barely making ends meet, particularly in those schools where 55+% qualify for a free or reduced cost lunch.

How can you help? There are several ways; your local church is a good resource; the Kitsap School District or your local area schools could provide information; and, then there are community organizations like the Kiwanis Club. Scott Kingsbury, who was president of the Gig Harbor Kiwanis Club three years ago, said they hold fund raisers throughout the year and spend roughly $15,000 on supplies for between 200 and 300 needy students on Key Peninsula alone. The Kiwanis Club gathers backpacks, pencils, etc. and clothing to give to low income families. School supplies need replenishing, so, ongoing support is needed.

Recently, my friend asked me how I liked my German cars. I mentioned they were really fun to drive and economical too. However, they seemed to suffer from various electrical issues. my 1973 square back suffered from intermittent electrical problems and everything would go dead, then for no reason start to work. My 1990 Quattro’s vent system seemed to have a mind of its own. My 1999 had automatically dimming headlights, but the directionals didn’t work. If the directionals worked, the headlights either went to bright or turned off. The car dealer had the car for two days and told me nothing was wrong.

Well, my friend told me he had the same issues on several of his post war “British Classics”. Albeit, the electrical systems were designed by different companies in different languages, but they suffered the same malady. There was an easy home fix. He suggested that just replace the fuses with more modern ones designed for such issues. Since it was a German auto, use metric. Since his car was British, he used BSW (British Standard Whitworth). The guide is to the right. Easy fix!

The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want." The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, "Good choice: The clothes probably wouldn't have fit you anyway."
