MM1 Gilbert L. Brown, USN 1964–1967In loving tribute, our family and friends honor your devotion to

our country, family and God.

Gilbert Lee Brown was born October 25, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the son of Gilbert and Martha Brown. When Gil graduated high school he attended college at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Lack of funding delayed his dream of earning a degree. He returned to Louisville and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1964.

In the next 4 years he did three tours of duty to Vietnam aboard the USS Intrepid. Gil was assigned to the engine room as a machinist’s mate. While aboard Intrepid, they retrieved the Molly Brown space capsule with Grissom and Young on March 23, 1965. This event was one of his proudest moments while serving the country.

On one trip to Virginia, Gil met his wife. They married 3 months later. Gil began his career at Sears as a lawn mower mechanic. He worked his way up from that position and ended as a Sears store operator after 35 years.

Over the next 18 years, Gil remained in the Naval Reserve. Gil and his wife Ellen moved to Louisville in June 1973. While in the Reserves, he attended the commissioning of the USS Louisville. Gil retired with 22+ years of service. In 2015, Gil was proudly commissioned to be a Kentucky Colonel honoring his years of service to our country. Gil passed unexpectedly a year ago the day after his and Ellen’s 49th wedding anniversary.

EM2 Horace Richard Benedict, USN 1942–1946His smiling spirit was always an inspiration.

He loved his family, his country, ship and railroad. Served aboard USS Intrepid 1943–1945.

Horace Richard Benedict, one of nine children, was born on March 23, 1919. He grew up in the small railroad town of Crewe, Virginia. Benedict attended Crewe High School where he was a star member of the football team. After his high school graduation in 1938, he began his railroad career with the Norfolk & Western Railway.

Horace put his railroad career on hold to enlist in the United States Navy on July 16, 1942. After completing Naval Training School at Purdue University, he was assigned to the USS Intrepid. He served in the Pacific Theater from 1943–1945. He loved his ship and made many friends while on board. Even during the darkest days on Intrepid, with the ship under attack, he never lost faith in his ship and the ability of his fellow crew members to achieve victory. In 1946, he received an Honorable Discharge.

With World War II over, Horace resumed his career with the Norfolk & Western Railway and was headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia. In 1950, he married Elsie Dillion and had one daughter. During his N&W career he became one of the most respected locomotive engineers on the railroad. With his hand gripping the throttle of steam and later diesel locomotives, Horace delivered passengers and freight safely and efficiently to their destinations until his death in 1980.

5Specialist Shore Patrol 2nd Class John A. Colasanti,

USNR 1943–1946For your guidance, love and devotion to family and country.

Truly one of the Greatest Generation. Your devoted family honors you.

John Anthony Colasanti was one of ten children born to immigrant parents. Throughout his 84 years, he was a loving brother to eight sisters and one brother. Today John would be known as the “go-to person” for his relatives and friends. He always found time to be there for anyone in need of his help and guidance. He was one of the Greatest Generation.

In 1943, at the age of 31, John worked for a defense-oriented industry, had an infant son and was exempt from the draft. Despite being exempt, he and his wife Millie agreed that it was important he serve as a member of our military. Having no knowledge of what it meant to be a seaman, he volunteered to join the US Navy. At the time he joined, during his service and throughout the rest of his life, he could not swim a stroke.

After serving three years as a Shore patrolman, John returned home, joined the ranks of the employed and supported his family by working multiple jobs. While he was unable to pursue education beyond grammar school, he recognized the importance of a formal education and he and Millie sacrificed to ensure that their children went to college. Their two sons graduated law school and their daughter received a teaching degree and taught at an inner-city school.

Upon retirement, John and Millie were finally able to travel, their favorite trips being cruises to Caribbean islands. But their greatest enjoyment was visits with their family.

John’s deteriorating health did not dim the sparkle from his pale green eyes nor his full-face smile when watching his children and grandchildren enjoying Sunday Italian dinners prepared by Millie, his lifelong partner and greatest admirer.

Captain Jon Roger Geer, USN 1945–1969Aviator, gentleman, dedicated grandfather.

A true patriot: loyal, ethical and fair.

Capt. Jon Roger Geer, a native of Rule, Texas, retired from the Navy after 27 years of service. A Naval aviator, he served in various operational, staff and command assignments during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Jon flew off of Intrepid as part of fighter squadron VF-81, probably 1957 to 1958. He entered the US Navy in 1945 as an ensign. As a fighter pilot, he served in a number of aircraft carriers in both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets and commanded Fleet Composite Squadron Eight at Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Puerto Rico. Jon attended the Navy General Line School in Newport, RI, and the United Kingdom Joint Services Staff College in Latimer, England. He held a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Minnesota.

After retiring from the Navy in 1969, Jon was employed by Harris Corporation, until his retirement in 1989 as director, Eastern Region, Norfolk. He was past president of the Hampton Roads Squadron of the Association of Naval Aviation and a member of the Tailhook Association. Jon was also a senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He was a widower and at the age of 61 married Patsy Jane Thompson. He instantly became a stepfather to two married children. Jon was a wonderful, involved father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

MM3 Francis A. Nugent, USN 1942–1945In loving tribute to your service aboard the “Mighty I”. Honored and

proud to be part of this legacy. You remain forever in our hearts.

Francis A. Nugent was born in New York City in 1925. He was 12 years old when he lost his dad and his mom was left a widow with 4 children during the Depression. Frank’s older brother Bob and his uncles enlisted to serve their country during WWII. Frank was only 17 and needed his mother to sign him up. He persisted and eventually she gave in.

Frank was initially assigned to the USS Ranger. One day, his mom arrived at work and noticed everyone acting strange around her. The newspaper headlines had reported that the USS Ranger had been sunk, which thankfully turned out to be German propaganda.

Frank was reassigned to the USS Intrepid in 1943 when the ship was commissioned. While on Intrepid, he served as a machinist’s mate. He worked hard and was in the engine room when the ship was torpedoed and hit by a kamikaze, was there when it ran aground on the Panama Canal and when it fought in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

Frank always made the war sound like a big adventure – and talked about the fun he had on liberty and his time in the South Pacific. It wasn’t until Intrepid came to New York, that the reality of his experience became clear. We are forever grateful for his service and proud to know that he will be remembered, and revered not only by those who loved him, but on the ship he loved and was so proud to serve on.

PhM2/c Richard J. O’Brien, Sr., USN 1943–1944Brother, QM1 John P. “Jack” O’Brien. U.S.S. Terry KIA 3-1-1945.

Richard J. “Dick” O’Brien, Sr. was born in 1923 and raised in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Waldron Academy in 1936 and from Philadelphia’s West Catholic High School four years later. Prior to enlisting in the Navy in November 1942, Dick attended Pierce Business School, was a member of the Ocean City Beach Patrol and worked as a title clerk for Commonwealth Land Title Company.

Aboard Intrepid, Dick was one of the ship’s photographers. On October 29, 1944, a kamikaze struck a gun tub on Intrepid’s port side. Film of the attack, revealed that impact was not captured. On November 25, 1944, the Fighting I’s darkest day, Dick filmed impact of one of the two kamikaze to strike the flight deck that day. Suffering from third-degree burns and severe shrapnel wounds, he was triaged. The following day, he was taken to sick bay when the ship’s chaplain found him still alive. Dick was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals.

After his release from the Philadelphia Naval Hospital, Dick earned a Pennsylvania realtor’s license and joined his father, William, in the family’s Philadelphia real estate business. On October 15, 1952 he married Peggy McGill, and the two began a family that would include William (b. 1954), Maureen (b. 1958), Richard Jr. (b. 1960), John (b. 1961), Thomas (b. 1964) and ten grandchildren. Dick served as the President of the Germantown Kiwanis Club, was an active member of the Bala Golf Club and the much-loved captain of Our Folly, a 26’ Chris Craft that provided great times and happy memories. On September 1, 1968, while on a family vacation in Ocean City, New Jersey, Dick suffered a sudden, fatal heart attack.

7Major Ralph J. Odya, US Army (Ret.) 1970–2004

We honor your service to this country. Thank you for having been in our lives. Ron (in spirit) and Judith

Ralph Odya was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 11, 1950. He enlisted in the US Air Force in March 1970 and completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He completed tech training at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado. Ralph as an E-2 was first stationed in Aviono, Italy for three years as an Explosives Munitions Expert (46150). He extended his first enlistment to volunteer for duty in Vietnam as an explosive ordnance disposal technician in January 1974. Ralph served with valor and received multiple decorations as explosive ordnance disposal team leader.

Released from active duty in January 1975, Ralph enlisted in the Air Force Reserve and was assigned to the 440th Civil Engineers. He retired in June 1986 as an E-6 after 18 years. Ralph graduated from UW-Milwaukee in May 1986 with a BS degree in Nursing. He enlisted in Wisconsin Army National Guard in June 1986 and obtained a direct commission as 2nd Lieutenant in Army Nurse Corps. Ralph was called to active duty in September 1990 and served in Desert Shield / Desert Storm as forward EVAC critical care combat nurse in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait. Ralph earned his Master of Science Degree as a family nurse practitioner in June 1998 from UW-Milwaukee. He was promoted to the rank of Major and retired as Clinic Commander Waukesha after numerous activations for support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Badger Care.

Ralph retired from the military after more than 34 years of continuous service. He now lives in Milwaukee, proud father of three children, two daughters Yao and La-Wun and son Midchi. He is happily married to his wife Diane and they are both enjoying a well-deserved retirement.

Sergeant Jim Power, US Army 1969–1972In honor of your service in the Army and for the museum.

Semper et deinceps.

Jim Power was born on Long Island shortly after the end of World War II and was raised in Far Rockaway, Queens. The youngest of three children, Jim grew up an avid Mets fan and went to Loyola High School in Manhattan. At the onset of the Vietnam War, Jim was drafted into the Army where he served as a communications sergeant from 1969–1972, learning how to code computers while sitting in the middle of rice paddies and monsoons.

Jim’s service was cut short however with the passing of his parents and he used the skills he learned in the Army to forge a career as an information technologies consultant for a variety of banks and companies, a career which lasted for over 40 years. During that time, Jim became the proud father of two sons; James and Kevin. After retiring, Jim found himself volunteering at Intrepid beginning in 2012 and over the last five years grew to adopt the ship, Museum and the volunteers. He loved every second he was able to walk through the hangar deck, climb up to the bridges and trudge through the submarine Growler.

Jim was always proud of his service in the Army but it was his service on Intrepid, personifying the Museum’s mission statement, that meant the world to him.

Lt. Col. Edward Carroll Smith, US Air Force 1941–1945

Awarded the Bronze Star Medal for bravery. Military service in China from 1941–1945.

Flying Tiger which then became the 14th Air Force.

Edward C. Smith was born in 1900. In June 1941, he received a call from General Chennault to leave his job in New York and fly over the “hump” to join the Flying Tigers as the Senior Intelligence Officer.

His personal relationships with many senior Chinese and Japanese officials was one of the reasons he was picked for this job. His job as the representative of Farmer’s Trust in Asia and his ability to speak Chinese and Japanese also made him an ideal candidate. He served in China until 1945 and then came back to the United States to resume his job.
