Girls are youngbut enthusiasticby Jack Scott

The girls soccer team has a lot of newfaces and smaller numbers than in the past.We have a lot of holes to fill, losing threefrom the starting defense and three-quartersof the offense from last year’s successfulteam. This year, Sarah Ebel will be the coachand Dennis Rollins will assist her when hecan. This will keep consistency from lastyear’s squad.

Because the team is small, most playerswill be at multiple positions depending onthe need. The positions listed below arewhere Coach Ebel feels they are looking toplay at this early stage of the season.

The returning seniors include WhitneyBrown, who will play at defense and KristynDavis, who will play midfield. New this yearare Mathilde Iversen, an exchange studentfrom Norway and Julia Bentley who hasmoved here from away. They have notplayed soccer before but are both veryathletic, hard workers, and quick learners.

The juniors are all returning players whosaw a lot of time on last year’s team. HolliBoyce will see time at center midfield posi-tion, Katie Haskell will play in the offensivepositions, Logan Eaton will play in themidfield, Morgan Shepard will lead thedefense, and Allison Cormier has movedfrom defense to outside forward with astrong foot.

The sophomores also have experiencefrom last year. Ashley Haskell has returnedfrom her injury to play in the center midfieldposition, Allyson Eaton will play in goal,Allison Eaton will play in themidfield/forward spot, Natalie Knowltonwill play in the forward position, BaileighJohnson, who has also moved here fromaway, will probably be in the midfield posi-tion.

The lone freshman is Jesslyn Gove and shehas started at the defense position. Sheplayed the entire first game and seems to fitin very well.

As it seems to happen every year, we haveso short a time to get going with a full teamat the end of summer. Consequently we willstart off a bit ragged until the new playerscan get on the same page as the veterans. Wehave several girls who have not playedsoccer but are very athletic. Teaching themthe way to play their positions and workingon their skills will take a little time. How fast

they learn will be critical to our success onsuch a small team.

We do still have several good offensivethreats from the players who are returning. As our conditioning improves, we should beable to put goals on the scoreboard and thatwill give us good potential as the seasonprogresses.

Coach Ebel is very impressed with thework ethic that the girls have shown so far. They are working to improve their condi-tioning since they know they will need itwith such a small team. They are also devel-oping a good team chemistry to get thenewer players together with how to work asa team.

Attitude is so important and these girlshave it. This team will improve quickly asthe season progresses and Coach Ebel isexcited to see them become successful, despite their youth to start.

Boys have small team withexperienced coreby Jack Scott

Once again the boys have small numbersand actually were rescued by the demise ofthe golf team. We have a core of playersfrom last year’s team along with several newfaces, many of whom have not played soccerin recent years. Similar to the girls’ situation,we will need to integrate the new players intothe system as well as build their skills.

The seniors are led by Pat Duddy who hasstrong skills at forward and has played threeyears before at that position. DouglassHeanssler, Nick Dunham, and Andy Turnerhad played golf before, but have made thecommitment to play soccer. Coach BennettMorey has been impressed with their effortand ability to pick up the strategy of thegame quickly.

The juniors include Matt Duddy atforward and midfield, Cody Eaton atdefense, Noah Gillen at defense, Jared Gove, new to soccer, at defense, and also HaydenTorrey who returns after a year off at goaland defense.

The sophomores include speedsterKrisford Melanio at forward, Noah Davis atmidfield, Paul Zoephal at forward/midfield,and Justin Eaton at defense.

The freshmen are Ethan Shepard, whoplayed goal but will also be in midfield andLiam Griffith who has come from Castineand will play at forward/mid field position.

Similar to last year, the boys have rela-

tively small numbers. Only in the last weekor so have we had enough numbers to have afull team at practice. This starts us off at adisadvantage, but luckily we have somespace between the early games to give ustime to pull ourselves together.

The challenge is to get the new players upto speed and on the same page with the restof the team. Learning a new position is hard, especially without previous knowledge ofhow the game is played. Soccer is aboutspacing and strategy with the emphasis onpassing, so the skill level needed is higherthan it was years ago.

It will be a bit of trial by fire, but Coach

Morey feels that this group is motivated toimprove and the veterans from last year’steam are anxious to lead the new players. Heis pleased with the team chemistry and hopesthis week of practice will get us ready to playthis weekend.

He is also encouraged by the return ofHayden Torrey, who is experienced at thegoalie position. We have several provenoffensive players, so we should score goals. Our success will be determined by how welland quickly we get the new players workingwith the team because everyone will seeplenty of playing time.

Both teams lose openers

Sophomore Ashley Haskell edges the ball in the season opener against Schenck on September 7.

by Jack ScottThe girls lost their home opener to

Schenck 4-1. As expected with so many newplayers, we need time to work together andbuild confidence with the new players. Westill made a great effort and held our ownmostly through the first half.

Schenck finally broke through with 11minutes left and then scored an unfortunategoal with a minute left in the half to lead 2-0. With a little over 10 minutes gone in thesecond half, Natalie Knowlton swept in thecorner kick by Holli Boyce to cut the lead inhalf. Unfortunately Schenck scored a coupleminutes later to give them a comfortablecushion.

We have several strong forwards and didgenerate many good opportunities with ouroffense. I think this will only get better as weplay more even opponents. It showed thatSchenck had a good preseason under theirbelt.

Goalie Allyson Eaton made 8 saves on 23Schenck shots with a lot of them Grade Asaves, and Schenck saved 3 of our 14 shots.Overall, this was a good team effort and itwas clear that some of the girls need to learnthe spacing and coordination needed to beeffective. I expect this to happen and we willbe looking much better fairly soon. CoachEbel felt we did very well overall and seeswhere we have to improve.

The boys lost to Schenck 6-1. Many of thenew players did well with a lot of playingtime. Schenck was careful to key on PatDuddy, trying to smother him from many

offensive opportunities. They were veryorganized and got a lot of open shots at ourgoal.

We did score near the end of the first halfwhen Krisford Melanio raced down the rightside of the field and fed Pat Duddy a greatpass that he booted home. It gave us some-thing to feel good about, but we weren’tready to face a team with that much experi-ence.

Freshman Ethan Shepard did a solid job ingoal despite the score. He made several pointblank saves and held up well for his firstvarsity game. Overall, he made 19 saves onSchenck’s 32 shots and Schenck made 5saves of our 15 shots. Coach Bennett Moreyis hoping to have Hayden Torrey back soonwho has previous experience in goal to helpEthan out.

Coach Morey was very pleased with theeffort and feels we are improving quickly. He hopes we can pick things up this weekendwith a home game against Jonesport and thisweek to prepare. A win early in the season isjust what the doctor ordered to build ourconfidence to go along with our effort.

Both teams struggled against an organizedopponent as would have been expected. Wewill have to work hard to get to where weneed to be. Both coaches are optimistic thattheir players are motivated to do what ittakes to be a successful team. That andconditioning will make it happen. It will bean uphill battle but I think each team willlook a lot different in a couple weeks.

No golf team this yearby Jack Scott

Mostly because of the lack of players, there isn’t going to be a golf team thisyear. After losing a big senior class withSam Grindle and Connor Morey, there

weren’t enough players to have a fullteam. The good news is that we will not bepenalized by the MPA for not fielding ateam and can have a golf team next year.
