    Defeat Depression Project ( )

    A community-funded three-year project 1999-2003 A multi-disciplinary, multi-media and multi-target mental health

    educational programme for the Chinese-speaking communities Focused on the recognition, treatment and prevention of depression Language and cultural dimensions taken into consideration

    Why on Depression?

    Pre-Project independent community survey by the Lingnan University on the Knowledge of Depression in the NTW Cluster (1999)

    39% reported significant depressive symptoms

    2.1% has sought professional help

    46.5% did not know that depression is an illness

    Over 62% did not know that there is treatment

    Objectives

    1. To educate the general public and high-risk populations about depression as a mental illness and its prevention and treatment;

    2. To share evidence-based information and sharing of skills with family doctors and other community healthcare professionals;

    3. To reduce the disability related to depression by empowering patients and carers, and to foster greater patient participation in managing their depression.
