PREFACE

This Defence Standard supersedesDef Stan 13-81/1 dated 1 May 1975

i This Defence Standard specifies the requirements for Calcium SilicideSizes 100, 200, 240 for Ministry of Defence use. It has been prepared bythe Explosives Subcommittee of the Defence Engineering and EquipmentStandardization Committee.

ii This Standard has been agreed by the authorities concerned with its useand shall be incorporated whenever relevant in all future designs,contracts, orders etc and whenever practicable by amendment to those alreadyin existence. If any difficulty arises which prevents application of theDefence Standard, the Directorate of Standardization shall be informed sothat a remedy may be sought.

iii Any enquiries regarding this Standard in relation to an invitation totender or a contract in which it is invoked are to be addressed to theresponsible technical or supervising authority named in the invitation totender or contract.

iv This Standard has been devised for the use of the Crown and of itscontractors in the execution of contracts for the Crown and, subject to theUnfair Contract Terms Act 1977, the Crown will not be liable in any waywhatever (including but without limitation negligence on the part of theCrown its servants or agents) where the Standard is used for otherpurposes.

1 Scope

This Standard specifies the requirements for calcium silicide for use in themanufacture of certain initiatory, pyrotechnic and smoke compositions.

2 WARNING

4 Description

The material shall consist essentially of calcium silicide in the form of afine powder. It shall be free from grit, foreign matter and visibleimpurities.

5 Information to be Supplied by the Purchaser

The purchaser shall state clearly in the contract or order the size (eg 100)of the material required and the quantity required for each container.

6 Test Requirements

Samples taken from any portion of the supply shall be in accordance withclause 4 and, when tested by the method specified, shall comply with thefollowing requirements:

7 Methods of Test

All enquiries concerning methods of test or other technical matters shouldbe referred to the Directorate of Quality Assurance/Technical Support,Materials Centre, Royal Arsenal East, London SE18 6TD.

8 Quality Assurance

8.1 The Quality Assurance Authority reserves the right to sample and testthe material and/or its ingredients at any time during manufacture.

8.2 If any sample taken from the consignment be found not to comply withthe requirements of this Standard, the whole consignment may be rejected.

9 Containers

9.1 Unless the form of packaging is specified in the contract or order thematerial shall be supplied in sound clean and dry watertight containerssuitable for the product. The use of contaminated containers will renderthe whole consignment liable to rejection. After filling, each containershall be securely closed.

9.2 Each container shall be legibly and durably marked according tostatutory requirements and with at least the following details:
