BACHELOR DEGREES IN ARTThe Department of Art offers innovative programs for students interested in the visual arts. Degrees are offered in art, computer animation, graphic design, and photography. The department has over 30,000 square feet of space devoted to studios, laboratories, lecture halls, and galleries. Studios in painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, and photography maintain the best tools available for students to develop skills and express ideas. Digital labs maintain state of the art computer equipment for students in graphics, photography, and computer animation.
There are a number of opportunities for artists in many industry or business settings. Many of our graduates work for graphic design firms and game development studios, work as commercial photographers and self-employed artists, or become public school teachers. Our programs give students the foundation to succeed in a variety of career fields after graduation.
REQUIREMENTSStudents must pass the BFA Portfolio Review after completing 15 hours of ARTS foundation courses. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in SHSU ARTS courses to graduate with a BFA. Students are required to purchase a laptop specified by their chosen BFA program. For more information, visit shsu.edu/laptopinitiative.
Minors: A minor is not required for BFA degrees. Students who wish to teach art should minor in Secondary Education to obtain K-12 teaching certification.

COURSEWORKStudents wishing to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in any art program, are required to participate in WASH (Workshop in Art History and Studio). WASH is a nine credit hour foundation program that includes studio and lecture components. Other core art courses required of all BFA’s include drawing, painting, sculpture, and time based classes. After passing a BFA Portfolio Review in their sophomore year, students take advanced courses to develop expertise in the BFA program of their choice.
SCHOLARSHIPSIncoming freshman are eligible to apply for the Weldon Hall Scholarship from the Department of Art, see shsu.edu/artscholarships for more details.
