SUBJECTs Comments of cr ... Participating in FRANKFURT lliasion, this date.
tO COJOL\NDDIG OFFICER, AAF Sta. 128, APO 634, US Army.
1. Capt. Jere W. Maupin suggeiJta that bunohers be placed further apart and arrangements made so that wings are not .forced to aiSemble so close together. Capt llaupin cites as an example the fact that the Triangle -C Group was aaaembling directly over and ciroling Kolegworth Airfield at 9,500 .feet altitude at ·tje aa,e time that Triangle - K was supposed to be doing the !&me th&ng. Capt. Maupin auggests that utilization o.f more territGry would avoid the possibility of colltaion and the usual assembly difficulties. Capt. aupin further su~geated that Wing and Group leaders .fly precisely as briefed and maintain the prescribed route over England.
2. Capt. Maupin suggests provision of a color of flare for Group and Wing Leader• to fire to indicate VHF has failed, in order that Deputy Leaders may understand that they are to take over the lead so far as communications are concerned. Capt. Maupin and Lt. Goodnan, ~here are tho Spitfires"? Lt Anderson, A/C 511, states that only 35 I.B. should be loaded. hon 42 are loaded they hang up.
3. Lt. Dunaway, John A. A/C 8033, observed that ing leadership was very poor. He was disapointed that bombs were not dropped somewhere in Ger.many.
4. Lt. James B. Harding, A/Clll6 ~aited one hour and 15 minutes for transportation from dispersal area.
5. Lt. arvin J. Christensen, A/C 8026, Criticised the briettng, seemed incomplete. Lt. Paule R. ling, Navigator for Lt. Christensen, criticised the weahher briefing.
6. Concenaua of opinion o.f all crew members was that Fichter escort was effective when present ; however, theexpected escort by P-51'• over the argot area was noticeably lacking, and contributed directly to the loss of one A/C by this Group.
7. Lt. Donald V. Kirlchuff, A/C 1488; "Group Leader gave lows quadron no clearance."
8. Lt. Leo I. Lingenfel9er, A/C 1087, Bombardier, said his Pilot )old him not to drop leaflets.
9. Lt. Roger S. Schlieper, Nav. A/C 1662, asked why they didn't bomb on flak at the target.
10. Lt. Charles R. Strode, Bombardier, A/C 1374, complained of dirt on nose plexi-glass and top-turret.
11. Lt. illiam D. Sellers, Pilot A/C 9837 1~wants to fly with ~y own Wing." He also wanted to crop his bombs in Germany instead of the Channel.
