Lyle/Pacelli, Sauk Centre, Robbinsdale Cooper win firstchampionships; Eastview claims secondFour champions were crowned during the

2018 State Girls’ Basketball Tournament.Eastview won its second championship inClass AAAA with a perfect record, while SaukCentre earned its first title in program historyafter finishing undefeated in Class AA.Lyle/Pacelli and Robbinsdale Cooper also cap-tured the first championships for their pro-grams in Class A and Class AAA, respectively.

Class AA first-time champion emerged in the

Class A field when top-seeded Lyle/Pacellirecorded a 57-33 victory over Sleepy Eye inthe title game.

Kristi Fett, a 6-foot-5 senior center, was adominant force in the low post with 30points and 16 rebounds for the Athletics. Herperformance powered Lyle/Pacelli (32-1) toits first championship in program history. In1980, as Austin Pacelli, the team placed sec-ond to Albany in the Class A field.

Junior guard Abigail Bollingberg chippedin 10 points, including five in the first half asthe Athletics completed their historic seasonon a 25-game winning streak. Lyle/Pacelli didnot lose to a Minnesota team during the2017-18 season. Its only loss was a 65-55 set-back to Crestwood (Iowa) on Dec. 16.

Lyle/Pacelli shot 57.1 percent in the sec-ond half to extend what had been a nine-point lead at the break. The Athletics led by21 points three times in the second half andstretched it to 24 when senior guard BrookeWalter made two free throws with 1:09remaining in regulation.

Fett and the rest of the starters left thefloor at that point and were met with a rous-ing ovation from their fans.

Fett scored 17 of her points in the first halfas Lyle/Pacelli built a 31-22 lead. In 18 min-utes of play, she was 6-of-8 from the field and5-of-6 from the free throw line. Bollingberghad five points for the Athletics in the firsthalf.

Senior guard Sarah Ibarra had a team-bestseven points in the first half for the unseededIndians (28-5) on 3-of-4 shooting from thefield. Senior guard Madi Heiderscheidt ledSleepy Eye for the game with eight points.Senior guard Brianna Polesky also finishedwith seven points for the Indians, who werealso looking for their first state champi-onship.

In the third-place game, Minneota zippedpast Mountain Iron-Buhl for a 74-56 victory.The Vikings (27-5) led by 10 points at thebreak and continued to build their lead withan up-tempo style of play. Junior LydiaSussner led the Vikings with 27 points and 10

rebounds on 12-of-18 shooting. Sophomoreforward Morgan Hennen added 16 pointswhile ninth-grade guard Abby Hennen had12. Senior forward Mary Burke led theRangers (29-4) with 25 points and sevenrebounds.

Mountain Iron-Buhl also tied the tourna-ment record for best free throw percentage inthis game, shooting 12-for-12. The only otherteam to accomplish this feat was Lakeville in2005.

Ada-Borup/Norman County West used asecond-half surge to record a 63-47 victoryover Heritage Christian Academy of MapleGrove in the consolation final. Sophomoreforward Kora Kritzberger led four Ada-Borup(28-3) starters in double figures with 16points and 10 rebounds. Junior forwardMaddie Smart had 15 points, senior guardBrooklyn Erickson had 12, and junior guardMariah McKeever had 10 points, sevenrebounds and seven assists.

Junior guard Taylie Scott scored a game-high 29 points to go with eight rebounds for

Heritage Christian Academy (20-12). Seniorforward Annika Simonson contributed 10points and 10 rebounds.

Lyle/Pacelli made its way into the titlegame with a 53-41 semifinal victory over No.4-seeded Minneota. Kristi Fett was a forceinside for the Athletics with 17 points and 14rebounds. She also had seven blocks.Sophomore forward Olivia Christianson had13 points and Abigail Bollingberg added 10points and three assists.

The Athletics put together a 12-3 run mid-way through the second half whenChristianson and senior forward KendalTruckenmiller hit from behind the arc andFett added four points on layups.

Ninth-grade guard Abby Hennen scored15 points and had eight rebounds forMinneota and Lydia Sussner had 11 pointsand seven rebounds.

In the lower-bracket semifinal, Sleepy Eyecompleted the championship pairing with a63-48 upset victory over No. 2-seededMountain Iron-Buhl.

Madi Heiderscheidt fueled a powerfulSleepy Eye attack with 24 points, including17 in the second half. She also had fiveassists. Brianna Polesky added 18 points and

Sleepy Eye held a three-point advantage atthe half and the Indians went on a 12-2 runearly in the second half to stretch their leadto 45-35. Ibarra hit two three-pointers andPolesky hit another during the run.

Mountain Iron-Buhl, the runner-up toGoodhue in 2017, was paced by senior for-ward Mary Burke who had 15 points, sevenrebounds, three blocks and three steals.Junior guard Macy Savela, junior guard AllieNegen, and junior guard Madisen Overbyehad 10 points each for the Rangers.

Class AASauk Centre (33-0) finally secured the

championship that had eluded them in threeprevious tries. The Mainstreeters captured theprogram’s first title following a 63-52 victoryover Roseau. This year’s win also avenged lastyear’s 75-64 loss to the Rams in the title game.

Sauk Centre led by 12 at the break, butthen had to survive a ferocious rally by theRams (26-6) in the second half. Roseaupulled within 55-52 on a three-pointer fromjunior forward Emma Waling with 2:06remaining, but Sauk Centre then converted8-of-11 free throws to secure the victory. Fourof those free throws came from senior guardMaesyn Thiesen.

Sophomore guard Tori Peschel scored 18points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the SaukCentre. Senior guard Kelsey Peschel also had18 points. Thiesen finished the game with 17points, including a key three-pointer thatgave Sauk Centre a 55-43 advantage in themidst of a Roseau surge.

Junior guard Kacie Borowicz paced theRams with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and two

assists before fouling out. Katie Borowicz, aninth-grade guard, had 10 points and sevenassists.

Norwood-Young America held offMaranatha Christian Academy of BrooklynPark with a 64-54 victory in the third-placegame. Bren Fox, a 6-foot-3 senior center,scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds topower the Raiders (29-4). Fox had 14 pointsand 10 rebounds in the first half whenNorwood-Young America built a 36-26 lead.Senior guard Kali Grimm added 17 points forthe Raiders.

Senior forward Jaclyn Jarnot had 25points and 15 rebounds for the Mustangs(27-6). Senior guard Kylie Post added 17points.

In the consolation final, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton cruised to a 64-32 victory over Byron.Senior forward Evelyn Dolan scored 19points and grabbed 10 rebounds, includingseven on the offensive end, to power thePanthers (31-3). Senior forward SydneyLanoue added 18 points and eight rebounds.During the game, Lanoue also passed the1,000-point milestone for career scoring.

Junior guard Lexi Glynn paced Byron (20-12) with 12 points, three rebounds, and foursteals.

Sauk Centre earned its spot in the champi-onship game after posting a 54-45 victoryover Norwood-Young America. TheMainstreeters used a 16-2 run in a 5-minute,30-second span in the second half to turnwhat had been a slim 28-27 lead into a 44-29advantage.

Tori Peschel scored 18 points for SaukCentre, while Maesyn Thiesen and KelseyPeschel added 13 points apiece.

In the second semifinal, Roseau survived afrenzied finish with a 78-66 victory overMaranatha Christian Academy. The Ramspulled away from the end-to-end battle withfree throws in the final two minutes to earn aberth in the title game.

Kacie Borowicz scored 40 points, includ-ing 26 in the second half, and younger sister,Katie, added 20. The duo was a combined 21-of-24 from the free throw line and a com-bined 5-of-8 from three-point range.

Jaclyn Jarnot scored 20 of her 25 points inthe first half when the Mustangs opened a38-33 lead at the break. Kylie Post had 19points for the Mustangs.

Class AAATop-seeded Robbinsdale Cooper won its

first championship in its first tournamentappearance after posting a 49-37 title victoryover Northfield (27-4). Junior guard AjaWheeler scored 15 points to fuel an aggres-sive offense.

The Hawks, coached by former St. PaulCentral standout Kiara Buford, finished theirhistoric season 29-2. Buford is just the sec-ond female to win a Minnesota champi-onship as a player and then as a coach. In1983, Lisa Sukalski led Henderson to theClass A title, and then in 2001, coached St.Michael-Albertville to a Class AA champi-onship.

Senior guard Grace Touchette hit a base-line runner at the halftime horn to bringNorthfield to within 20-18 at the break. Shehad a team-best 12 points in a back-and-forth opening 18 minutes and finished with24 points. Senior center Annika Hoff con-tributed seven points and 14 rebounds.

Wheeler had seven points for the Hawks,who opened the game on an 8-0 run.Robbinsdale Cooper’s suffocating defensealso forced Northfield into 12 turnovers inthe first half.

In the third-place game, Grand Rapidsbuilt on a seven-point halftime advantage topull away for a 51-42 victory over Willmar.Junior forward Meara Beighley led a balancedattack for the Thunderhawks (23-8) with 11points and seven rebounds. Junior forwardHannah DeMars and senior center MaggieMiska contributed nine points each.

Junior forward Carly Wedel scored 11points and grabbed eight rebounds forWillmar (26-4).

Academy of Holy Angels of Richfieldrecorded a 56-46 victory over Alexandria Areain the consolation final. Junior forwardDestinee Oberg paced the Stars (27-5) with12 of her 14 points in the second half. Obergalso added eight of her 13 rebounds in thesecond half. Sophomore forward KaylieVanDerWerf was a versatile threat with ninepoints, seven rebounds, two blocks, and twosteals.

Senior forward Emma Schmidt had 18points and two steals for Alexandria Area(25-6).

In the top-bracket semifinal, RobbinsdaleCooper made its way into title game follow-ing a 65-54 victory over Willmar.

Ninth-grade guard Kierra Wheeler andsenior guard Ty’Neecia Longs scored 12points each to lead a balanced attack thatturned the Hawks’ two-point halftime advan-tage into an 11-point victory. Wheeler alsograbbed 12 rebounds. Aja Wheeler had 10points and five rebounds for RobbinsdaleCooper.

Senior Cayle Hovland scored 22 pointsand grabbed 15 rebounds for the Cardinals.Junior guard Hannah Johnson added 13points for Willmar.

Senior guard Grace Touchette scored 21points to lead the Raiders. She was 7-of-15from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throwline. Touchette also sparked Northfield to a59-51 lead with 2:47 left in regulation.

Senior guard Heaven Hamling scored 24points and added six assists and six reboundsfor the Thunderhawks. Hannah DeMarschipped in 14 points and Maggie Miska had10 points and six rebounds.

Class AAAAEastview completed its undefeated season

in dramatic fashion, posting a 68-63 victoryover Hopkins. It was also Eastview’s secondvictory over Hopkins this season. TheLightning won their first, 66-56, over the hol-iday break.

It was the first championship for the top-seeded Lightning (32-0) since 2014 and sec-ond overall.

Eastview senior forward Megan Walstadhelped ensure that Hopkins wouldn’t get ameasure of revenge by scoring 20 points andgrabbing seven rebounds. Senior forwardMariah Alipate added 15 points and ninerebounds as Eastview held off a furiousHopkins (28-4) comeback attempt in thefinal frenzied seconds.

The Royals pulled to within 64-63 with32.5 seconds left in regulation when juniorguard Dlayla Chakolis grabbed a reboundand muscled in a putback. The Royals, how-ever, couldn’t get any closer to the Lightning.With three seconds remaining in regulation,senior guard Raena Suggs had a three-pointattempt to tie bounce twice on the rim,before the rebound was secured by Eastview.

Eastview used a 7-0 run midway throughthe second half to turn a two-point deficitinto a 54-49 lead. Alipate gave the Lightningthat lead on a three-pointer with 6:55remaining in regulation.

Hopkins sophomore point guard PaigeBueckers finished with 37 points, fourrebounds, and two assists. Chakolis con-tributed 15 points and eight rebounds.

Lakeville North used free throws down thestretch to top Roseville Area 51-46 in thethird-place game. Senior center Ke Jamespowered the Panthers (25-6) with 16 pointsand eight rebounds. She also had two stealsand a block. Sophomore guard Lauren Jensenadded 13 points for Lakeville North.Roseville Area (23-9) got 12 points and fourrebounds from sophomore forward JaydaJohnston.

In the consolation final, Cretin-DerhamHall of St. Paul recorded a 64-57 victory over

Maple Grove. Cretin-Derham Hall (23-7),which was up by 18 in the first half, was ledby junior forward Frannie Hottinger’s 19points and nine rebounds. Teammate AutamMendez, a senior forward, chipped in 11points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.Sophomore guard Ali Hinze scored 13 pointsand had four rebounds for Maple Grove (24-7).

In the first semifinal, Eastview defeatedLakeville North for the third time during the2017-18 season with a 57-47 victory. Seniorforward Andrea Abrams scored 16 points andMariah Alipate added 14 to power theLightning into championship game. The duocombined for five three-pointers in the firsthalf.

After a 25-all deadlock at the half, theLightning bolted past Lakeville North in thesecond half. Eastview’s lead grew to as manyas 15 points when junior guard EmmaCarpenter made two free throws with 5:06left in regulation. Eastview’s Megan Walstadalso stepped up her game in the second half,scoring six consecutive points and adding ablocked shot.

Lauren Jensen scored a team-best 20points for Lakeville North and Ke Jamesadded 11 points and 11 rebounds.

In the lower-bracket semifinal, Hopkinssprinted to its fourth consecutive title gamewith a 61-34 victory over Roseville Area. PaigeBueckers scored 21 points with five steals,eighth-grade guard Amaya Battle added 13points and eight rebounds, and DlaylaChakolis finished the game with 12 pointsand five rebounds.

In defeating Roseville Area, the Royalsused their trademark high-pressure defenseto create 10 steals and force the Raiders into27 percent shooting from the field. Hopkinsalso asserted itself on the offensive end in thefirst half, getting three putbacks – two fromBattle – to build a 21-point halftime lead.

Roseville Area was paced by JaydaJohnston, who had nine points and fiverebounds.

The 2018 State Girls’ Basketball Tourna -ment quarterfinals were played at TargetCenter in Minneapolis and Williams Arenaon the University of Minnesota campus onMarch 14-15. The semifinals were played atTarget Center on March 15-16. Champion -ship games were played at Target Center onMarch 17. Consolation and third-placegames were played at Gangelhoff Center onthe Concordia University campus in St. Paulon March 15-17. Total paid attendance was34,630.
