November 2013 Dinner Meeting and Short Course
Since the early 1990’s, engineers have been designing and developing in situ testing
equipment that can collect high quality strength data from soft clays and other very
sensitive soils. Full flow penetrometers (FFP) and electric vane shear testing (VST)
equipment have been developed to collect in situ strength data digitally. The devel-
opment of these systems has progressed and improved so that today we can measure
undrained shear strengths in very sensitive soils and soft clays to as low as a half of
one kilopascal. Test results from CPT, FFP and VST testing will be reviewed and
compared with laboratory tests from three sites located in the lower mainland of
British Columbia, Canada.
Bruce is an experienced, licensed professional geologist with over 20 years of experi-
ence in the mining exploration, diamond core and geo‐environmental drilling and in
situ testing industries. Since 1999, as Regional Manager of ConeTec’s New Jersey
office, Bruce has gained considerable knowledge and experience in the practical and
technical applications of cone penetration testing (CPT) as well as several other di-
rect push and in situ testing, sampling and fracturing methods. Bruce has managed
numerous projects relating to mining, industrial, construction and civilian engineer-
ing projects in Canada, the United States and internationally. Bruce completed his
undergraduate degree in geology at Laurentian University. Bruce is also a licensed
DE and WV Well Driller, NJ Test Borer and possesses his CDL as well as
HAZWOPER worker and supervisor certifications.

LRFD Micropile Design
Mr. Bennett provided a complete overview of the current state of practice in terms of design for
micropiles. His presentation included an introduction of micropiles with a review of their historical
development. He reviewed Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and how it is the predomi-
nant design method utilized today for reinforced concrete and structural steel, and is the primary
focus of the relatively new AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. Jonathan discussed how
micropile design had been performed mainly with Allowable Stress Design (ASD) methodologies, and
most of the design manuals and specifications in existence prior to 2008 were based on ASD. It
was pointed out that in most recent ADSC / DFI Micropile Seminars, there have been a number of
questions regarding the proper use of LRFD for micropiles. Jonathan provided several design
examples and compared the results of various methodologies.
Mr. Bennett serves as Chief Engineer and Business Development Manager for Brayman
Construction Corporation in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania. He has been involved in the design and man-
agement of specialty geotechnical construction projects since 1994 throughout the Mid Atlantic Unit-
ed States. He specializes in the design and analysis of ground anchors and anchored structures
primarily focusing on tieback walls, soil nailing, micropiles, foundation underpinning and tiedowns
for structural support.

Which In‐Situ Test Should I Use: A Designer’s Guide

This Short Course will address Sources of Design Uncertainty, Design Method predictions, and various In‐Situ
Tests and their use in USA. These In‐Situ tests include:
Standard Penetration Test (SPT)
Flat Plate Dilatometer Test (DMT)
Cone Penetrometer Test (CPT)
Pressuremeter Test (PMT)
Borehole Shear Test (BST
The presentation will close with concluding remarks about choosing the best test for different design
applications and Quantifying Risk. Mr. Failmezger has supervised and planned geotechnical exploration
programs and performed geotechnical design for numerous infrastructure projects. Those projects have
included large diameter water and sewer mains, roadways, airport pavements, bridges, subway stations, office
buildings, retaining walls, and earth dams.
Based on his design background, Mr. Failmezger knows that one of the most difficult geotechnical tasks is
numerically characterizing the subsurface conditions to accurately determine what values of soil/rock strength,
deformation moduli, lateral/vertical stresses and permeability to use for design. Mr. Failmezger has been an
invited speaker numerous times at VDOT, ASCE, Soil Nailing Users' meetings to discuss these topics. At the
International Site Characterization conference, Dr. Marchetti invited him to be a speaker for the dilatometer
short course. He was an invited speaker at the 1999 and 2004 national ASCE conventions and the 50 years of
pressure meters International Symposium. He has published 20 technical papers on in‐situ testing and
probability. He organizes the Virginia ASCE Geotechnical Section meetings and was an editor and the
organizer for the Second International Flat Blade Dilatometer Conference in 2006. He created a CD‐ROM that
contains a large volume of technical documents that has been used by 5000 engineers worldwide.
