Discussion Thread 1: Matthew’s English teacher (Mrs. Gallagher) wants to speak to Matthew’s resource teacher (Dr. Lewis) about Matthew’s inability to work in groups. Dr. Lewis mentions that Matthew might benefit from advocacy skill building.

Dr. Lewis-
I believe that you are working with one of my students, Matthew Delgado, on his social skill training. I thought I would let you know that I assigned a group project for the class yesterday. Things did not go well with Matthew’s group! He was rude toward some of the other students (calling one of my students stupid and boring). I just wonder if he is too immature for group projects, all he talked about all period was video games. Do you have any suggestions?

Hello Kathy,
I am sorry to hear that things did not go well in your class yesterday. I have been working with Matthew for two years now, and I have seen a lot of improvement in his behavior and social skills. However,
8
interacting appropriately with peers may just take a little extra time for him. I hope you will not give up hope. He is a unique student with many talents.
Lately, I have been trying to get Matthew to be a better advocate for himself. We have been working through understanding what his needs are and how he can ask for help himself. His re-evaluation is coming up in the beginning of October and I would like to see him take a bigger role. It would be helpful to Matthew if you were to ask him what he needs to better succeed in your class. I will also talk with him about group work when we meet tomorrow. Let me know if this helps!

Discussion Thread 2: Matthew’s mom (Carla Delgado) is encouraging Matthew’s Resource Teacher (Dr. Lewis) to add occupational therapy for handwriting on Matthew’s IEP.
From: Carla Delgado ([email protected])
To: Charlie Lewis ([email protected])
Date: Thursday, September 30th, 2:54 pm
Subject: Necessary IEP Services
I was looking over Matthew’s homework yesterday and I am concerned about his handwriting. I really want OT to be a part of his IEP for this year. I know that if we list it as a need, that the school district is required to cover it. We need to add that for this year! I am sure that if we administer an assessment for him, he will qualify. I have heard that the McMaster is a good test.
P.S. You should have seen him playing with his little brother the other day. They get along so well!

Hello Mrs. Delgado,
Thank you for the suggestion for the IEP reevaluation. I have talked to the school’s occupational therapist, Linda Thompson, and she will add a handwriting assessment to the evaluation list for you to sign off on.
10
We might also want to keep in mind that Matthew already has three study halls where he sees a specialist for specific needs. Adding handwriting may be overwhelming for him. His handwriting is delayed, but it is not so delayed that I worry about his development. He is struggling in math though. Maybe we could focus on that! Something to keep in mind as we discuss this at his meeting.

Charlie- It was nice to talk to you at the meeting yesterday. I know that everyone has concerns about Matthew’s math grades, but I think that the extra time to turn in his homework will really help him. My concern now is more focused on his handwriting. Thank you for speaking to the occupational therapist about adding the McMaster to the list of assessments for Matthew’s re-eval. She shared the results with me yesterday, before you got there, and he technically qualifies for OT, so I am really going to push for it!! I know not everyone is on board, but I know it is the right thing for Matthew. He needs to work on his handwriting now, not later! -Carla

Carla,
I was able to catch up with Linda, Matthew’s occupational therapist yesterday about her assessment results. We also spoke about how he qualifies and what his options are for services. If your family has decided that it is an important part of Matthew’s education, then we can start Matthew on services next week. Linda has openings for Matthew after school on Wednesdays. Will that time work for you?
Thank you,

I will, of course, also keep track of his math grades and we can brainstorm things that will help him in the future with that as well! Nice to talk to you,

Dr. Lewis, We decided to end the OT for Matthew. It was interfering with soccer practice and I want him to really participate in that. I know he says he doesn’t like soccer, but I think it is important to him. The OT did not seem to be very effective anyways. Oh well, he’s so negative about school anyways, hopefully this will cheer him up. -Carla

Discussion Thread 3: Matthew’s math tutor (Ms. Lawrence) is speaking with Matthew’s math teacher (Mr. Peters) about Matthew’s progress and his in-class accommodations.
From: Dena Lawrence ([email protected])
To: Roger Peters ([email protected])
Date: Monday, October 11th, 1:37 pm
Subject: Matthew Delgado Tutoring
Hi Roger,
I just finished the tutoring session with Matthew for the day. He told me that your class started a new unit today on probability. Do you have time to meet this afternoon so that we can go over the lesson plans and what you would like me to focus on?
He did ok on fractions, but he still could use some extra help. It is just so hard for him to focus on the problems. I do, however, now know that in order to kill a zomboid in Operation: Space you press ctrl+enter+F7. Sometimes I think I learn more than he does in these tutoring sessions.
I asked him about the homework from last week. He still hadn’t started it, so we went over it a little before the period was up. How do you think giving him extra time on his assignments is working? Does it seem to be helping him get more homework turned in?
Let me know what your day looks like!

Hi Dena,
Sorry about yesterday – the day got away from me. Would you have time to stop by today instead? I have the lesson plans all ready to go.
14
In answer to your question…
I don’t know how to feel about the extra time accommodation. Matthew is just so unorganized and never paying attention. It’s not like he is working on it and just needs extra time. He never pays attention enough to work on it in the first place. We need to look through the data sometime and see if this extra time is actually resulting in more homework turned in.

Discussion Thread 4: Matthew’s mom (Mrs. Delgado) is discussing problems on the bus for Matthew with the school principal (Mr. Bernstein)
From: Carla Delgado ([email protected])
To: Phil Bernstein ([email protected])
Date: Friday, November 3rd , 2:54 pm
Subject: Unsafe Buses!!
Principal Bernstein,
Matthew came home yesterday and once again the bus driver told me that other boys were getting into fights with him on the bus. This was very discouraging to me-as you can imagine! As you know, we already switched his bus route because he was disagreeing with the students on that bus as well. I don’t know how you are running your buses but I don’t appreciate the total lack of discipline. I don’t even consider Matthew safe anymore!

Subject: RE: Unsafe Buses!!
Dear Mrs. Delgado,
16
I want to assure you that the safety of our students is of the utmost importance to us. I am sorry to hear that Matthew switching buses did not improve the problems he has been having on the bus. In order to get this all sorted out, I discussed the problem this morning with his bus driver, Ms. White. She mentioned that the fight began when Matthew told another student that his new haircut made him look like the alien from his computer game. The other student responded and a shouting match ensued. Ms. White separated the boys for the remainder of the trip.
I was hoping that by moving Matthew onto another route, we could avoid some of these behavioral disruptions on the bus. It appears that more drastic steps are necessary. Ms. White has agreed to try some changes on her bus. To begin, a seating chart will be implemented to keep the two boys apart for the meantime. I am also speaking with Mr. Lewis about skills he could teach Matthew while riding the bus. Would you like to set up a meeting to discuss possible actions?
Thank you for bringing this to our attention,

Subject: Matthew Delgado: Behavioral Plan
Hello all,
As you all know, we are working with Matthew Delgado to improve his social behavior as well as his organizational skills during class time. Matthew and I have created a behavioral contract together of how he will perform in class. As part of this contract, Matthew will fill out a checklist indicating the positive behaviors he exhibited during that period.
At the end of the period, Matthew will ask all of you to check to see if you agree with the behaviors that he has performed. Every time you both agree that he performed those behaviors well, he will score points that he can use to be on the computer.
I know you are all incredibly busy, but would you all be willing to help Matthew by filling out this sheet for him?
Thanks for your time,

I guess this will be fine as long as it doesn’t take too much time at the end of the period. Matthew is always hanging around at the end of the period talking about some annoying science fiction story. I wouldn’t want to encourage that. He already has problems getting to where he needs to be!

Use respectful words with my classmates: Using respectful words means that I will say please and thank you to classmates.
