Core team to include members with clean background: Hazare

Ralegan Siddhi (Maharashtra), Nov 13 (IANS) Announcing that his core team will be revamped, Anna Hazare Sunday said the com-mittee will be expanded to 50 but would only include members with a “clean background”.

“The core team will be revamped and shall have 50 members from all walks of life,” he told reporters here after a meeting of the core team.

Hazare said a code of conduct will be framed for the new core committee and a background check conducted before any new members are inducted. Also the activities of the new members will be strictly monitored after their in-clusion.

Meanwhile, the anti-corruption activist demanded that the Central

Bureau of Investigation (CBI) be made an independent body, saying that it is necessary that the agency

is free of government control. He also said that he will work

towards empowering and strength-ening of Gram Sabhas which is also his aim alongside a corruption-free nation.

Reiterating that he was not anti-Congress, Hazare said his team will support the ruling party if they bring in the Jan Lokpal Bill. He, however, criticised the party-led United Progressive Alliance gov-ernment for trying to weaken the Lokpal Bill by proposing to intro-duce five different bills aimed at tackling corruption.

Asked about Swami Agnivesh, who has expressed his desire to apologise to him and rejoin the team, Hazare said the decision over the matter will be taken later.

Advani’s yatra disrupted, shown black flags in Punjab

On Mumbai’s roadmap: Washroom for women every two km!Mumbai, Nov 13 (IANS) To improve the sanitary standards in Mumbai, its civic body is planning free-for-use washrooms for women every two km of the city. And if a group of NGOs has its way, they may also be equipped with sanitary pads vending machines and have female cleaners instead of the male staff.“The BMC (Brihanmumbai Munici-pal Corporation) is planning to build dedicated toilets for women within every two km in the city. After their construction, the maintenance and management of these will be handed over to NGOs,” BMC standing com-mittee chairman Rahul Shevale told IANS.

Rajasthan ex-minister Maderna hospitalisedJodhpur, Nov 13 (IANS) Mahipal Maderna, who was sacked as Rajasthan minister and suspended from the Congress’ primary mem-bership over alleged involvement in the case of a missing nurse, has been hospitalised here after he complained of chest pain, sources said Sunday. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Saturday quizzed his wife Lila and Congress legislator from Luni constituency Malkhan Singh over their alleged involvement in the case of missing nurse Bhanwari Devi. Bhanwari Devi had gone missing from Jodhpur’s Bilara area Sep1. Maderna was sacked from the cabinet by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot Oct 16 over allegations that he had a role in her disappearance. It was alleged that the nurse had started blackmailing Maderna on the basis of a CD showing both of them in a compromising position.

Bathinda (Punjab), Nov 13 (IANS) The Jan Chetna Yatra of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani was disrupted as it en-tered Punjab Sunday afternoon from this south-west Punjab town.

Activists of the Akali Dal-Amritsar, which is led by radical Sikh leader Simranjit Singh Mann, and some Muslim groups protested against the yatra and even showed it black flags.

The Punjab Police took into custody over 50 activists of the Akali Dal-Am-ritsar. The route of Advani’s entourage had to be changed in Bathinda town to avoid more protests.

Advani was given a rousing re-ception earlier as the yatra, which is against rampant corruption, mis-gov-ernance and black money in the coun-try, entered Punjab from Haryana.

Bangalore, Nov 13 (IANS) Former prime minister H. D. Deve Gowda’s reported threat to a top police official probing corruption charges against his son is being probed and action will be taken once it is completed, Karnataka Chief Minister D.V. Sad-ananda Gowda said Sunday. The chief minister said that the police official, Jeevan Kumar Gaonkar, an additional director general of police (ADGP), was transferred Nov 10 from the of-fice of Lokayukta (ombudsman) as he felt “embarrassed” to continue in-vestigation into charges against Deve Gowda’s son. He denied that Gaonkar was shifted out of Lokayukta under pressure from former chief minister B. S. Yeddyurappa.

Gaonkar was supervising investiga-tion into corruption and illegal lands deals cases against Yeddyurappa also.

Deve Gowda has confirmed he tel-ephoned Gaonkar Nov 7 to convey his unhappiness about the way probe into his son H.D. Balakrishne Gowda, a retired Karnataka government of-ficial, was being conducted. Deve Gowda, however, denied that he had threatened Gaonkar.

Hyderabad, Nov 13 (IANS) A Con-gress member of parliament from Telangana Sunday said Prime Min-ister Manmohan Singh’s statement on a separate Telangana state has shocked the people of the region.

“The people have started feeling that UPA (United Progressive Al-liance) has betrayed them,” Madhu Goud Yaskhi, who represents Ni-zamabad, told IANS.

Nine Congress MPs from Tel-angana, who will meet here Monday to chalk out their future course of ac-tion, will be seeking the intervention of party president Sonia Gandhi.

“Madam Sonia Gandhi is the last

hope. We will appeal to her to pre-vail upon UPA to start the process for formation of Telangana state,” Yaskhi said.

Ruling out formation of separate Telangana state at least for now, Manmohan Singh said Saturday that nothing would be done in a hurry to do something that will create trouble in the other regions.

Reacting sharply to the prime minister’s statement, Telanga-na Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao said the prime minister was blind to the sentiments of the people of Telangana.

Omar meets Antony on AFSPA ahead of state cabinet meet

New Delhi/Jammu, Nov 13 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Sunday met Defence Minister A.K. Antony in New Delhi to discuss his gov-ernment’s demand for withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Pow-ers Act (AFSPA) from parts of the state. The meeting between Abdul-lah and Antony comes four days ahead of a meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir cabinet on Nov 17 to discuss the repeal of AFSPA from some part of the states. The two

leaders met for almost an hour at Antony’s official residence in the capital, but details of their discus-sion were not available immediate-ly, sources in New Delhi said.

The meeting comes close on the heels of Antony saying the state’s Unified Command core commit-tee headed by Abdullah and com-prising commanders of the Indian Army’s 15 and 16 Corps and the state police was empowered to take a decision on the demand for with-drawal of the AFSPA.

Surgeons conduct north India’s first cartilage transplant

Slum kids’ take on life through films, photos

International tradefair begins today

Kids run as part of Children’s Day celebrations

New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) Vineet Tomar, a 21-year-old engineer from the capital, would now be able to walk again after doctors at a hospital here on Sunday performed a cartilage surgery on him, a first for north India.

“The patient suffered a knee injury and was on the verge of losing mobility. Doctors conducted a cartilage surgery where we obtained cartilage cells (cells that make up the tissues) from a healthy part and re-implanted them into the patient’s injured part after harvesting them in a culture lab,” said Raju Vaishya, senior consultant, orthopedic and joint replacement department at Apollo Hospital.

The cells were sent to a laboratory for cultivation and multiplica-tion before being transplanted back to the patient’s injured joints for healing. The surgery was performed live at the first Congress of Indian Cartilage Society.

The post-operative care includes physiotherapy and exercise under guidance. Since the cartilage has been grown from the patient’s own cells, there is no foreign material implanted and thus no chances of rejection.

New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) Showcas-ing photos and self-made short films on themes like friends, family and school, around 100 kids from slums and shelter homes from seven states in the country have gathered here to express their take on life.

Organised by NGO World Vision India, the first ever Child Journalists Summit in the capital was inaugu-rated on Saturday. It will culminate today.

“The summit with its theme - ‘My

life is a story’ - attempts to provide a platform for children living in dif-ficult circumstances to express them-selves in front of their urban coun-terparts, NGOs, policy makers, the media and the nation as a whole,” World Vision India National Direc-tor Jayakumar Christian said.

The summit began with the screen-ing of short films and a photo exhibi-tion at Dilli Haat - the popular south Delhi hub for handicrafts and delica-cies from all over India.

New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) The 31st edition of the annual India Interna-tional Trade Fair (IITF) that opens today is expected to attract 6,000 exhibitors and nearly 1.5 million visi-tors.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukher-jee, along with Commerce and Indus-try Minister Anand Sharma, is sched-uled to inaugurate the 14-day event to be organised at Pragati Maidan, the country’s largest fair and exhibition venue.

IITF is organised by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), under the commerce minis-

try. It is the largest integrated trade fair in the country with both B2B (business to business) and B2C (busi-ness to consumer) components.

The first five days of the fair (Nov 14-18) will be reserved for business visitors only. The fair will open for general public from Nov 19-27.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Indian handicrafts - The magic of the gifted hands’.

The fair will host products from 230 exhibitors from 26 countries, in addition to 27 Indian states, 31 central government ministries and around 260 private companies.

New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) Live rock music, folk dances and poem recitals! It was a carnival at Cen-tral Secretariat Grounds in central Delhi’s, Chanakyapuri, where over a thousand kids from all walks of life gathered to participate in a run to motivate their underprivileged counterparts.

Organised by NGO Prayas Ju-venile Aid Centre Society as part

of celebrations to mark Children’s Day today, the ‘Run For Children’ was joined by kids from public and government schools as well as shelter homes and slums running together.

“This is the first time that I have participated in such an event and I am very excited,” said 10-year-old Chandan Verma, a student of Birla Vidya Niketan in south Delhi’s

Pushp Vihar.Children from eight to 18 years

completed the four kilometre stretch in about an hour.

“We want children from the un-derprivileged sections with amaz-ing strength and grace to try and create a niche for themselves in the society,” Amod Kanth, general sec-retary, Prayas JAC, told IANS.

New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) For the first time, India will host the “Paris Pact Meeting” beginning today, that will focus on devising international cooperation against drugs trafficking.

The two-day meeting is being organised here by India’s finance ministry in association with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), an official statement said on Sunday.

The event will be coordinated by the Central Bureau of Narcotics, Gwalior.

The Paris Pact initiative is a partnership of more than 55 coun-tries and international organisa-tion’s aimed at combating Afghan opiates trafficking, consumption and related problems in the af-fected priority countries along the Afghan opiates trafficking routes.

The partnership mechanism is supported by UNODC.

Mario Monti is Italy's new PM

Iranian lawmakers call for review of cooperation with IAEATehran, Nov 13 (IANS) Iranian law-makers said on Sunday that after the recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report on the coun-try's nuclear programme, the coop-eration between the Islamic Republic and the UN nuclear watchdog needs to be reviewed.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said on Sunday that the Iranian lawmakers will soon start reviewing the ways of the country's future cooperation with the IAEA, reported Xinhua.

After the IAEA's "hostile" nuclear report against Iran, the parliament believes that "it is necessary to review Iran's cooperation with the Agency," Larijani said when addressing a par-liament session on Sunday.

On Wednesday, Iran's perma-nent representative to the IAEA Ali-Asghar Soltanieh said that Iran was likely to reconsider means of its co-operation with the IAEA.

Asked about some Iranian law-

makers' views that Iran may walk out of the NPT, Soltanieh said that Ira-nian lawmakers may have their own independent views.

However, the ways of cooperation with the IAEA in the future depends on the decision of the Islamic Repub-lic's high-ranking officials, he said.

On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Min-ister Ali-Akbar Salehi criticized the latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency on his coun-try's nuclear program saying that the UN watchdog has abandoned objec-tivity on the issue.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday warned the international community that Iran's nuclear ambitions endanger "the peace of the entire world."

Netanyahu called on all nations to stop what he referred to as "Iran's race for nuclear weapons."

Tehran has completely rejected the report, calling it “unbalanced, unpro-fessional and politically-motivated."

New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) Ahead of the Durban climate change talks beginning Nov 28, experts are worried that Eurozone crisis may curtail the billions of dollars of funding from industrialized countries to their poorer counterparts to adapt to cli-mate change.

Money is expected to be a bone of con-tention between developing and developed countries at the United Nations Frame-work Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties 17 (COP 17) Nov 28-Dec 9.

With financial crisis deepening in Eu-rope -- spreading from Greece to Italy -- and the US economy also going through a troubled phase, the money pledged by developed countries is nowhere to be seen.

"The financial crisis in Europe will defi-nitely affect the flow of money promised by

the rich countries and this is going to be a big fight in Durban," Chandra Bhushan, deputy director general of the Centre for Science and Environment, told IANS.

According to Bhushan, with the trou-bled financial scenario in the West, de-veloping countries can forget about any money coming their way, at least in the near future.

At the 2010 Cancun climate summit, developed countries had re-confirmed a commitment to raise $100 billion annually by 2020 for the longer term.

India's official stand has been that suc-cess of the Durban conference will depend on the operationalisation of the Cancun agreements.

To this end, some comfort can be sought from the communique issued after a G20 summit earlier this month.

India, LTTE met 'secretly' before Sri Lanka truce: Eric Solheim Oslo, Nov 13 (IANS) Indian officials met in "secret" with the LTTE ahead of Sri Lanka's 2002 truce although New Delhi considered the Tamil Tigers a terrorist group, Norwegian cabinet minister Erik Solheim has revealed.

The former envoy to Sri Lanka also said - confirming for the first time ever an IANS report of 2008 - that In-dia played a covert role in events that led to the Tamil Tigers and Colombo signing a ceasefire agreement (CFA) nine years ago.

If true, this would be the first known

meeting between Indian officials and the LTTE since New Delhi banned it in 1992 for assassinating former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi a year earlier.

Solheim also added that contrary to public knowledge, the Indian govern-ment, then led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), played a key behind-the-scenes role in the framing of the Nor-wegian-sponsored CFA.

The CFA ushered in months of peace in Sri Lanka before falling apart. The LTTE and the Sri Lankan regime went to war again in 2006, leading to

the decimation of the Tigers in May 2009.

LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran, who met Solheim about 10 times in all, starting in 2001, was an "absolute amateur" in international politics even though he was a "military genius", the minister said.

Balasingham also complained to Solheim that both Prabhakaran and LTTE intelligence chief Pottu Amman insisted for months that their group had no role to play in Rajiv Gandhi's killing.

US apologizes for frisking Kalam in New York New Delhi/Chennai, Nov 13 (IANS) For-mer Indian president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was frisked by the airport authorities in New York Sep 29, resulting in a strong In-dian protest and a subsequent US apology for the breach of protocol. India Sunday said both countries will soon frame "mech-anisms for facilitating airport procedures for dignitaries" to prevent such incidents in the future. Saying the external affairs min-istry had immediately lodged a protest over this incident with the US, external affairs ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said: "The US Government has promptly written to former President Kalam express its deep regret over the incident and has assured us that it is taking corrective steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future."

"The two governments are also planning to hold discussions to explore appropriate mechanisms for facilitating airport proce-dures for dignitaries, in accordance with national regulations," he said in New Delhi.

Eurozone crisis may cloud Durban climate talks

Rome, Nov 14 (IANS) Mario Monti, an eminent economist and former European commissioner, was on Sunday appointed as Italy's new prime minister.

President Giorgio Napolitano has asked Monti to head the new govern-ment after Silvio Berlusconi resigned from office Saturday.

Monti is expected to push through austerity reforms asked by the Euro-pean Union (EU) to cut Italy's mas-sive debt and regain market confi-dence.

Earlier last week, Berlusconi had lost majority at the parliament's low-er chamber and promised to resign as soon as the austerity measures

were approved by both the houses of parliament.

He handed in his resigna-tion on Saturday after the lower house passed the auster-ity measures. The package was cleared by the upper house Friday.

Monti, 68, served as a lead-ing European Commission member between 1995 and 2004, gaining a reputation as a highly capable and tireless worker.

He is now due to present the list of the cabinet ministers to the presi-dent and then face a parliament con-fidence vote as soon as Monday or Tuesday, according to local media.

The next elections are due in 2013. There is no official time limit for the government, although predic-tions say that Monti will make way for polls once he carries through the measures asked by the EU.

Recession affecting pets in Britain

Gulf turmoil hit Indian tea exports

New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS): India may have grown at over eight per-cent, but a top adviser has expressed concern over the “stagnant employ-ment situation”, saying the country with 40 million unemployed people witnessed “jobless growth” during the Eleventh Five Year Plan period from 2007-08 to 2011-12. “The only explanation for an almost stagnant employment situation is simply that not enough jobs are available in the economy, even with an eight percent plus growth rate,” National Advisory Council member N.C. Saxena told IANS in an interview.

London, Nov 13 (IANS): It seems global recession is tak-ing a heavy toll on pets’ lives in Britain. Animal welfare charities here have warned of pets rapidly becoming the forgotten victims of the eco-nomic downturn. According to Britain’s oldest and popular home for dogs, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, the number of people handing pets over for financial reasons has dou-bled in the past year, the Daily Express reported.

New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS): Glob-al credit rating agency Moody’s is scheduled to discuss India’s sovereign ratings with the country’s economic policy makers here Monday, just a few days after downgrading its out-look on the nation’s banking system. A team from the US-based Moody’s is scheduled to hold consultations with officials of India’s finance ministry here to discuss the overall economic scenario as well as the sovereign rat-ings, a senior bureaucrat in North Block said, requesting anonymity. The review is scheduled Tuesday. Earlier, the agency had downgraded

its outlook on India’s banking sys-tem to “negative” from “stable” in the report released Nov 9. The rating agency defines a “negative” outlook as one characterized by volatility and uncertain conditions. Analysts said the ratings agency was likely to make some critical observations about the country’s sovereign ratings in view of the out of control inflation and fiscal deficit coupled with slumping growth and a little progress on economic re-forms.

“Definitely, there are causes of concern -- inflation is out of control, the fiscal deficit target is unlikely to

be met and now the growth is slow-ing down,” said Sanjeev Krishan, ex-ecutive director at Pricewaterhouse-Coopers (PwC). “But any downgrade will be premature at this stage,” Kris-han told IANS, pointing out that the current rating -- which is not exactly quite positive -- will continue given the prevailing economic situation and the overall domestic and global outlook. Moody’s has assigned India “Baa3” rating, which is the lowest in the investment grade.

Ratings downgrade makes bor-rowings costlier for the country and its industry.

Mumbai, Nov 13 (IANS): Empha-sizing that the Indian economy has been a stabilizing force even as the world grapples with economic crises, union Commerce and Industry Min-ister Anand Sharma Sunday warned against protectionism at a time when sovereign debt crisis is engulfing some European nations. “The fulcrum has shifted... when it comes to economic growth, the emergence of India and other economies is a factor of stability and growth” he said while speaking at the India Economic Summit of the World Economic Forum organized here by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). “In difficult times, the tendency is to look inwards, to have protective measures. This is some-thing the G-20 must reassure the

world that it will not happen,” Sharma add-ed. Sharma said that the world economy has been in recession for five years now and full recovery is not in sight yet. He said G-20 as a group has played a key role in ensur-ing that large scale job losses do not take place across the world. “G-20 today is an in-clusive and representative platform, as the new emerging economies like China, India, Brazil, Russia have been part of the discussion process,” he said. Sharma called for completing the ongoing WTO negotiation and correct

historical imbalances to make the new economic order more equitable and more accessible. He also underlined the need for reforming the Bretton Wood institutions - the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Kolkata, Nov 13 (IANS): Prior to the meeting with the Kingfisher Air-lines board, the bankers have asked for more details regarding the opera-tions of the airlines apart from an eq-uity injection of Rs.400 crore before restructuring of loans is considered. Kingfisher, India’s second largest air-line, is currently facing the biggest ever crisis mainly the high interest cost on its Rs.7,057.08 crore debt. The civil aviation ministry has sought the finance ministry’s help in reviving the airlines through restructuring its debt by the state-run banks. But the bank-ers, including the biggest lender State Bank of India (SBI), have asked the Vijay Mallya-owned airlines for more detailed information about it before a meeting Tuesday. “Possibly Kingfish-er has approached the government for foreign investment. We have already told them what they have to do before the bankers take a view on further lending to them. We have called them for a meeting on Tuesday,” SBI chair-man Pratip Chaudhuri told report-ers on the sidelines of a programme organised by industry chamber As-socham here. Chaudhuri said the air-lines has to come up with a lot of in-formation like what was the condition of their fleet, how many of them were airworthy and what was the assurance of their fleet’s landing at different air-ports. Stating that as of now there was no plan for increasing the equity of the banks in Kingfisher Airlines, he

said: “We are not investors actually, we came in as part of restructuring.” He, however, said debt restructuring, if at all it happened, will take place with the endorsement of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

“The promoters (of the airlines) have committed to bring about Rs.800 crore and so far they have brought only Rs.400 crore,” he said. “The com-pany needs equity and promoters do not have so much of equity. In case of other airlines, the promoters have in-creased their equity. Unless another airline joins in, we do not see much of value being added to Kingfisher Air-lines. The company is also committed to bring in equity from other business-es. Their liquor and other businesses are doing well,” Chaudhuri said.

Kolkata, Nov 13 (IANS): Coal India is likely to implement gross calorific value (GCV) based pricing from Janu-ary 2012, a top official of the Maha-ratna company has said. “As per the direction of the coal ministry, the company is taking measures to equip itself to adopt the new price mecha-nism - GCV - from January next year,” Coal India Limited chairman N.C. Jha said after announcing the second quarter results Saturday. Among ma-jor coal producing countries, India is

the only country which is yet to take GCV standards. “The new mecha-nism is expected to expand the range of both the product and price. The higher the GCV content, the higher will be the price,” Jha said. An official of CIL, the largest coal miner in the world, said: “The GCV-based system will allow a larger number of offerings with a narrower bandwidth of energy content. This may increase the cost for some consumers while other consum-ers may pay less.”

Mumbai, Nov 13 (IANS): India’s foreign exchange reserves dropped by $5.72 billion to $314.66 billion for the week ended Nov 4 due to decline in the value of gold reserves and foreign currency assets, official data showed. The forex reserves kitty has declined for the first time in the last five weeks under review. Foreign currency as-sets, the biggest component of the forex reserves kitty, declined by $3.87 billion to $280.57 billion for the week ended Nov 4, according to the weekly statistical supplement of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The RBI does not provide any reason for the change in the foreign currency assets. It says the assets expressed in US dollar terms include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US currencies such as the pound sterling, euro and yen held in the reserves. The value of gold reserves slumped by $1.77 billion to $26.89 billion. All the components of the forex reserves kitty registered decline during the week under review. India’s reserves with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) fell by $32 million to $2.64 billion and the value of special drawing rights (SDRs) de-clined by $54 million to $4.55 billion.

Children’s Day Special

THE GURU AND THE LOTUS

A recent incident of a student stepping forward to videotape

an important function set me think-ing about the goodness and generos-ity of youth in today’s world. Some-times we only look at our kids in terms of performance, but kindness stands out on its own.

While the richness of this boy’s spirit moved me, I felt deeply guilty. Guilty because in class I had raved and ranted at him for not doing his work on time. Children’s Day is also an occasion for teachers to walk up to erring students and tell them they are precious and make amends.

The distance between a student and teacher varies according to in-cidents and the value of a student’s work. Sometimes we forget that a child is also heart and not only mind. The great Saint John Bosco said; edu-cation is a matter of the heart and not only the mind. In Buddhism, the symbolism of a lotus is often used to speak of divinity and the ability to rise above all else. A card to a teacher had a lotus with the teacher’s name on it. In many ways this card reflected a great leap of faith on the part of the student. Why is a lotus so important?

"The lotus is an Asian water lily known for the delicate beauty of its water flowers. It possesses an amaz-

ing ability to flourish in a variety of environments ranging from clear ponds to muddy marshes. It is also known for its exceptionally hearty seedpods, which often plant them-selves far from its source, bringing the beauty of the lotus blossoms eve-rywhere."

We teachers can make our chil-dren become the lotus flowers in our schools. Like the bud that begins to grow on top of the stem, we can ex-pand and grow larger and larger in goodness and graciousness, finally bursting into full bloom. Through our acts of inspiration and kindness we can teach children to stand beau-tifully above the petty smallness of the world.

Uma Nair ENGLISH TEACHER

DON BOSCO SCHOOL, NEW DELHI

Everyone loves great students, but it takes many years for a teacher to realize that each child is precious. A teacher’s duty is to draw out the core of brilliance or genius in a child, and when that happens everyone will marvel at your act! A child’s deter-

mination to grow like the lotus out of the muddy pond reminds us of the Buddha and his journey towards En-lightenment. Each child is a beauti-ful white lotus flower, and our role is to remind people to rise above their small issues and sufferings, to bloom

and spread the essence of creation. Through the eyes of a child there is more to the world. They are the fu-ture, the tender fabric of tomorrow.

The selfless intent of a teacher, the

idea of transcending all and creating a new world for a student can equate a child’s being with the white, fragrant and beautiful lotus.

‘I am greedy’

Gora badan lighting mare, goggle pahne

taadhe saare…The above lyrics from the lead song of the new album by rock band Euphoria reveal the focus of their new album aptly named

ITEM.The band has also teamed up with

online digital music platform ArtistAloud.com that had a launch cast for the band last

Friday on their portal. I had a chance to speak to the lead singer of the band Palash Sen who calls himself a ‘Greedy Person’ i.e greedy for good and meaningful

music!

Here are some excerpts from the interview…SV: ‘Item’ is a very unusual name for a music album isn’t it?

PS: Not really! If you see around in our daily life, this word is all over the place and has too many meanings to it. Yes, one might argue that it is often referred to a girl who is hot looking or so on, but in reality it has a bit of everyone of us inside it. If some guy wears some funky clothes, then we call him item, if a friend acts foolish then we refer them as item. In short, it is a word for and of common people. Being a common guy that i think i am, the title is well suited.

SV: So can this album be termed as – made by people?PS: Absolutely! This album has nine songs to it and each one of them is inspired by what is happening in our daily life and the discomforts that we face, directly or indirectly. For instance, there is a song titled ‘Kabootar’, which is inspired by rich people and their intoler-able attitude. Another one is ‘Mujhe Jeene Do, which talks about the agony of ‘aam aadmi’ (common people) who has nothing to do with terrorists and terror-ism but is still affected by it. I have tried to take reality into the world of words & beats, and I am sure it would be appreci-ated by music lovers.

SV: Any song that stands out in the album as per you?

PS: (Smiles) There is one, that is titled – Ghum Sum (lost), that I think is perfect for our Prime Minister Mr. Singh as he is always lost and hardly speaks . Being a leader of the nation, I think people expect him to express himself more. However, I hope the song is taken in the right spirit and if there is anything to learn from it, it always adds on, isn’t it?

SV: Euphoria chose to compose rock music with Hindi lyrics, a very unu-sual step considering people always associated rock with English lyrics.

PS: That is where we scored didn’t we? I actually started writing songs in English, but when the idea of Eu-phoria came in frame, we thought of doing something different with it. Something that was virgin. Also, do you think Jimmy Hendrix singing a ghazal would appeal to people? Indian audience has a taste and acceptance level of its own and we just went by the simple rule of practicality.

SV: But has rock music evolved ever since you started?PS: I don’t think so! It is very stag-nant and to an extent filmy music is to be blamed for it. People like asso-

SV: And who are the talents that we are talking about?PS: Guys like Mohit Chauhan, Rab-bi, Atif from Pakistan, and many more. They are such gifted artists but due to the hesitant approach of pro-ducers towards individual albums or something similar they are limited to singing in movies. This is what I mean about aam aadmi and the situ-ations that he/she faces.

SV: Is this what the album is all about? A not so perfect society?

PS: Sandeep... I am an aam aadmi first and then an artist. But when I combine these two things, which is actually my only identity, no matter what, I will have an outburst. It is not only about filmy music, but also how things happen in the society that bothers me. A class that is com-mon but has the knowledge to serve the society for its betterment is always pushed back by people who have no idea of what life is all about. That is how it has been, and trust me when I say that things aren’t going to change anytime soon.

SV: But you are still in the battle field, taking it to a whole new level.

PS: (Laughs) Yeah we can call it

ciating with filmy music and that is where they see the scope of generat-ing more money. I wouldn’t believe even a bit if someone tells me that there is a dearth of talent in the mar-ket that can make a solo album hit. But because the opportunities are so less for individual work, singers and composers are getting diverted towards movies.

SV: What according to you is the USP of the album?

PS: The very fact that it is made up of life of common people makes it different. It has its own share of humor to it and a bit of social message. All I can say is, ITEM is a replica of common people.

Sandeep [email protected]

one. But with helping hands like ArtistAloud.com and Universal, reaching larger section of the audience has become easier, and non filmy music can now get much more exposure!

Variety is the spice of life! You must have heard the proverb empty vessels make the most noise?

You’re in the driving seat so steer!

Be confident and assertive but also be who you are!

Then you can sleep with your peace of mind intact!

Is a certain person telling you the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? That’s not only a question the sky is asking but it’s one you probably feel inclined to ask yourself where someone, possibly a close family member, is concerned. You have rea-son to feel concern for a particular person whom you feel distanced from in some way. They are going through a few changes but you can trust these are of the most wonder-ful and welcome variety.

March 21 - April 19Aries

Just grab onto it tight when you manage to get it because it’ll try to run away!

Rock star Tom Petty once said he receives sack loads of mail from people around the world who were inspired by his classic hit ‘I Won’t Back Down’. An artist whose work affects people in such a way couldn’t ask for more. In a similar way, you could inspire more than one person through your refusal to give way or back down on a particular is-sue. The sky insists that, if you can hold your ground, then you and more than one person will be pleased with a result.

May 21 - June 20Gemini

There are many online game and puzzle websites that are fun to play but impossible to do. One in particular involves trying to place your mouse over a shape. Each time you get within millimeters of it, the shape moves. After a minute or so of this, it’s easy to give up and find something better to do. A situation in your world keeps changing or moving every time you think you’re nearer to a resolution. Very soon, you will conquer it.

Sept. 23 - Oct. 22Libra

Don’t underestimate influence you have where a certain person is concerned. The message from the sky couldn’t be clearer where your relationship with someone is concerned. You appear to have the power to dramatically affect an outcome of some kind. They know the proverbial ball is in your court and so do you. Use your ability to dictate how a scenario progresses or finishes wisely and bravely.

Oct. 23 - Nov. 21Scorpio

Most people have experienced the Late Night Dripping Tap scenario. As you lay awake in bed, an unseen sink tap drips with infuriating regularity. Eventually, you must throw back a duvet and remove yourself in darkness from the comfort of your bed to sort it out. Something in your world is causing a similar reaction but constantly chipping away at your patience. To sort it will require you to make yourself uncomfortable briefly but you can resolve it, once and for all.

Nov. 22 - Dec. 21Sagittarius

Some leading dishwasher and washing machine manufactures redesigned their products in order to make them louder. After investing huge sums of money in designing them so they weren’t as noisy, people didn’t believe their dishwashers or washing machines were as effective as noisier brands and bought them instead. People sometimes believe that whatever’s ‘loud’ has clout and authority. Someone in your world is making a point loudly and confidently. That doesn’t necessarily make them more knowledgeable.

If you start believing in the lies they will become true for you!

You’re just being paranoid, relax!

The most important thing is to have faith in yourself!

Change doesn’t always have to be so difficult!

Remember, when you point a finger at someone else three are pointed back at you!

As of now just go with the flow!

When certain information is unavailable to us, we often make assumptions. We piece together information we have available and try to form an accurate picture. We know, in our hearts, that we might not be ‘getting it right’ but shrug our shoulders anyway in the belief we can only make use of what we have available. Be careful your imagination is not running riot now. Something you believe to be true could actually be very far from the truth.

June 21 - July 22Cancer

Is someone being true to their word? Is your faith in what you’re being told or can see with your own eyes misplaced? Both questions currently being asked of you now imply that a certain person isn’t being honest with you but it’s important to understand this is unlikely to the case. You have reason to be doubtful about what someone is telling you. Trust that they’re doing all they can to make an unsatisfactory scenario better.

July 23 - Aug. 22Leo

We often perceive ‘out of the blue’ develop-ments to be negative. We see them as curve balls thrown to us by life that we have had little time to prepare for. We prefer to know where we stand and be the instigators of change if we feel change must happen. A sudden development could cause you to re-assess what you believed to be finalized and sorted but you can trust that it is intended to be a gift that should not be seen as cause for concern.

Jan. 20 - Feb. 18Aquarius

We all know analogies about glasses being half full or half empty. There are benefits to the glass being in both states, it all comes down to which states suits us at any given time. You appear unsure about where you stand with a particular situation giving you cause to be both pessimistic and optimistic. It would be helpful if you had a bit more information available to make a fact-based decision and that information will be with you very shortly.

Feb. 19 - March 20Pisces

The third Little Pig, through recognizing the benefits of building his house with bricks, could have gone to more extreme lengths by installing a state-of-the-art security system. What he did invest time in proved to be more than adequate to solve a problem presented by a certain carnivorous creature. You too could go to extremes in order to protect or safeguard yourself in some way. Trust that doing so is unnecessary. You don’t have nearly as much to worry about as you believe.

Dec. 22 - Jan. 19Capricorn

Month ofScorpio

Ah, the ‘Finger of Blame’. Rarely does a day go by when it isn’t used by someone. Blame is, all too often, pointed in the wrong direction. People sometimes blame others in order to draw attention away from themselves. You might believe you have reason to blame someone else for a situ-ation that’s less than satisfactory. If you’re truly honest with yourself though, might it be fair for some of the blame to be pointed your direction too?

Healthy Food on the Go!Whether at work or college, your routine is probably hectic and demanding, so sometimes you might

overlook some important aspects, like food for example! Most of us take the easy way out by going to the canteen or binging on junk food just because it’s the easier and speedier option. This ends up weighing heavily on your pocket as well as your belly. But a little planning can always make sure you eat good, healthy and inexpensive food every day. So stop

ignoring your health and start budgeting!

Good morning Sunshine!Waking up in the morning (especially early) is sometimes dishearten-ing, so what you need is some energy and strength to face the world. A proper breakfast ensures a comfortable and happy day! Since you have to get to work or college on time, here are some readymade solutions.

Breakfast on the Go options:-

Cereal - Choose any variety of your choice! Since they have fiber and other vitamins, they’ll benefit you in the long run .

Yogurt – Not frozen yogurt! The last thing you need first up in the morn-ing is a brain freeze! Regular Tetra packed yogurts are available in almost every department store with different flavors, so stock up and eat up !

Is it Lunch time already?Eating out regularly will never help you in being fit and healthy. The best option is to carry your lunch from home. Either pack your food at night itself or wake up earlier in the morning. Buy a thermos and a lunch box that will keep your food fresh until you are ready to dig in, and you lunch breaks could be a little happier .

Lunch on the Go Options: -

Sandwich- You can’t go wrong with a simple sandwich. A cucumber sandwich is gen-erally simple to make and effective, especially if you use brown bread. Preferably try and avoid fattening options, instead go in for healthy spreads and fillings like coleslaw or cheese and tomato. Munch your lunch away !

Kathi Rolls - Choose the filling of your choice and wrap it up! It is easy to put together as you can throw in any of your favorite vegetables. It is the best lunch box treat and makes the meal complete.

Soup and Salad- The quickest and easiest meal to make. All you need to do is put your favorite vegetables, toppings and dressing together and Voila! There’s your crunchy healthy salad. You can also take along hot soup in your thermos .

Nandita Shamlal ([email protected])

Fresh Fruit and Dry Fruit- Go in for fruits that are in season as they’ll be the freshest and the cheapest. If you don’t want to eat fruit, juice is also a good option. Dry Fruits like almonds, apricots or raisins are tasty and filling as well.

IN BRIEF

Chidambaram visits Jharkhand, Odisha to review Maoist operations

Sonia hits out at Team Anna, commits Lokpal

Ranchi/Bhubaneswar, Nov 9 (IANS) Union Home Minister P. Chidam-baram Wednesday visited the Mao-ist-affected states of Jharkhand and Odisha to review operations against the rebels and also implementation of the developmental schemes in areas hit by Leftwing extremism.

In Ranchi, Chidambaram said he was reasonably satisfied with the im-plementation of Integrated Action Plan (IAP) in Jharkhand’s Maoist districts.

“I am reasonably satisfied with IAP implementation going in Jharkhand districts. More needs to be done. There has been significant success in Maoist operations between June and

October,” Chidambaram told report-ers.

He said “Jharkhand is one of the most Maoist affected states of the country. There are 14 battalions of CRPF and two battalions of Cobra forces are in Jharkhand. There are enough forces to deal with the Maoist menace in the state.”

The meeting was attended by Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda, state police Chief G.S. Rath and other senior got officials. Sources said Chidambaram asked the state government to implement central schemes properly in the Maoist af-fected districts.

Chamoli (Uttarakhand)/New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi Wednesday hit out at Team Anna and said the party and the UPA government were com-mitted to a strong anti-corruption ombudsman (Lokpal). Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal expressed hope the bill would be passed in the winter session of parliament.

The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that Gandhi’s comments “reflects their views”.

Welcoming Sonia’s statement, read out in absentia in Chamoli (Utt-

arakhand), Kejriwal expressed hope “the Congress would keep its word and pass the legislation in the winter session starting Nov 22”.

Hitting out at Team Anna for threatening another agitation on the Lokpal bill, Sonia Gandhi said “Corruption cannot be fought by speeches, so I don’t understand why this noise.”

She also reminded Team Anna that “It was the National Advisory Council (NAC) headed by me which had first started public consultations for a Lokpal”.

Mamata calls up Buddha with invite for film fest

Congress targets Uttarakhand over Haridwar stampede

Kolkata, Nov 9 (IANS) Breaking the ice after three years, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday personally called up her predecessor and arch-foe Bud-dhadeb Bhattacharjee to invite him to the 17th Kolkata film festival starting Thursday. This is the first time the film festival is being held after Bhattacharjee demitted office following the Left Front’s rout in the April-May assembly elections. The festival is considered Bhattacharjee’s brainchild. Banerjee told Bhat-tacharjee, an avid film buff, “it will make me happy if you come for the inauguration”. However, the former chief minister cited pre-occupation with another programme which will keep him away.

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) Sanjay Chaudhary, a close aide of jailed former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, was arrested in Dubai Wednesday on an Interpol red corner notice, the CBI said, adding it would initiate steps for his extradition. Chaudhary is ac-cused of investing Koda’s dubious funds by using his contacts in the alleged siphoning of public money.

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) The Congress Wednesday said the Haridwar stampede, in which at least 20 people were killed, occurred due to insufficient ar-rangements by the Uttarakhand administration. At least 20 people were killed and 40 injured in the stampede that occurred Tuesday when massive crowds had gathered near the Ganges for a religious meet in the temple town.

Notice to CBI on bail plea of Kanimozhi, four others

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday sought the CBI’s reply by Dec 1 on the bail pleas of DMK MP Kanimozhi and four other accused in the 2G scam and asked the jail officials for a medical report on accused Cineyug Films founder Karim Morani.

A notice was issued to the Cen-tral Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after hearing arguments on behalf of Kanimozhi, Kalaignar TV chief Sharad Kumar, Karim Morani and Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt. Ltd. directors Asif Balwa and Rajiv B. Agarwal.

The court also directed Tihar Jail superintendent to submit a medical report on Morani, who has sought bail on health grounds. Appearing for Kanimozhi, a senior advocate contended bench that the trial court ignored the CBI’s willingness to al-low bail to the five accused.

“A set of accused who came in ap-peal against the trail court bail de-nial order are not made accused in the principle charge sheet, in which former communications minister A. Raja is named,” said the defence counsel.

Mumbai, Nov 9 (IANS) The Bom-bay High Court Wednesday reject-ed the bail application of Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit, one of the prime accused in the Malegaon 2008 blast case, a legal official said.

The court, while rejecting the bail application on grounds that “prima facie material was avail-able against” Purohit, said that a detailed order would be delivered soon, according to advocate Sharif Shaikh, an intervener appearing in the matter on behalf of family members of a victim in the blast.

“The state had opposed the bail plea stating that the investiga-tions into the Malegaon blast was transferred from the state Anti-

Terrorism Squad to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) vide a notification last April,” Shaikh told IANS.

He said the grounds for opposing bail were since the NIA investiga-tions are still continuing, granting bail to Purohit could hamper the ongoing probe into the terror in-cident in the minority-dominated town in Nashik district of north Maharashtra.

Prasad was among 11 accused in the blast case, including Sadhvi Pragnya Singh Thakur. Alleged to be linked to a right-wing organiza-tion, Purohit has been continuously in custody since his arrest for his role in the blast case.

Jammu, Nov 9 (IANS) The Uni-fied Command Wednesday evening asked the two panels looking into the question of revoking the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) to “speed up” their recommenda-tions.

The two panels, with two Corps Commanders of the Indian Army, Director General of Police and

Principal Secretary, Home, were constituted in September last year to suggest the areas from where the Disturbed Area Act and AFSPA could be lifted. But the panels were not able to finalise their recommen-dations.

Official sources told IANS at the conclusion of more than three-hour-long meeting of the unified com-

mand held in the civil secretariat and chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and senior army com-manders, that it has been decided to “speed up the work and make rec-ommendations about the removal of AFSPA as early as possible”.

“However, no deadline has been suggested at the meeting,” the official told IANS.

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) The Su-preme Court will Nov 18 hear a peti-tion by suspended Indian Police Ser-vice officer Sanjiv Bhatt challenging the Gujarat government’s stand in a trial court which may adversely im-pact him in a 1990 case linked to a suspect’s death in Jamnagar district. An apex court bench said the mat-ter would be listed on its scheduled Nov 18 date after Bhatt’s counsel D. Sharma did not press for a stay of the trial court framing charges. The framing of charges was Tuesday put off by the Gujarat High Court till Nov 21. Sharma told the apex court that the high court had itself extended the stay and thus, there was no immediate need for action.

You want to become a gamer? Why shouldn’t you? Once you enter the virtual world of the Playstation 3 there’s no going back. If you’re a novice gamer then the list of the 5 best PS3 games may vary but

those who have played religiously during the last 3 years will be able to differentiate between the good games from the stellar ones.

A variety of gaming consoles are available but the decision to go in for the PS3 above any other would be due to the on-board blu-ray

player. Man oh man is it worth it!

This may be disputed, but many will agree, Batman: Arkham Asylum re-invented the comic book super hero gaming genre as much as Batman Begins and Dark Knight re-invented the comic book super hero movie genre. The book was inspired from the similarly titled graphic novel, and delved into the world of Arkham where insanity was the norm and Batman was trapped inside his worst nightmare. A fantastic

looking game, with awesome stealth fighting mechanics, this game is a must play for all Batman fans, who just love kicking some bad guy behind.

Another sand-box game is what you will think when you play infamous for the first time, but as the game progresses, you will get more and more immersed in what you will realise is the first game which plays out like a fantastic graphic novel. The protagonist in this game is a bike messenger who acquires superhuman powers through a catastrophic event. The game begins with

him discovering his powers, while at the same time giving you the choice as to whether he takes the good or evil direction. The choice of whether to be famous or infamous.

Top 5PS3 Games

Activision and Infinityward, combined together in Modern Warfare 1 to bring to the audience the noisiest, loudest and a fierce single and multiplayer first person shooter. The experience is addictive as well as immersive! Modern Warfare 2 was basically more of the same experience provided to gamers as was in the first edition and this familiarity itself was one of the leading reasons for the game to do so well. The multi-player of Modern Warfare 2 is one of the most complete, rewarding and challenging experiences one can hope for from a multiplayer game.

4Batman: Arkham Asylum

Criterion Games developed a sand-box free roaming racing game which can still boast of one of the largest online racing gaming communities in the world. This game’s rawness and ‘replayability’ makes it the best racing game, ever made. You can free-burn all over the map, with ‘DJ Atomica’ in the background telling you where the best races are. Whether in online mode or offline mode (switching between the two is absolutely seamless), this game is a viewing and playing pleasure.

Burnout: Paradise City

The Uncharted 2 gaming experience is better viewed than described, because words cannot describe the visual beauty or the gaming appeal of

this game. Whether it be the scenic beauty of Nepal or the fantastic missions throughout the game, Uncharted 2 feels and works more like a summer blockbuster than a video game. The game starts with a bang where you are hanging off a train going over the side of a cliff, and thereafter it goes into flash-back mode and you play on till

you reach the point where the game began .It has everything you would want in a game and more, and the multi-player isn’t bad either. It could very well be the best game ever made. Unchartered 3: Drakes Deception is to be released in November 2011.

Roebuck has committed suicide: South African police

Roebuck was being questioned for sexual assault

Cape Town, Nov 13 (IANS) Former Somerset captain and well-known commentator and journalist Peter Roebuck has committed suicide, the South African police said.

Roebuck, aged 55, died at his ho-tel in Newlands, Cape Town where he was covering the current Test series between Australia and South Africa.

South African police released a statement confirming that Roebuck took his own life, reported ESPN Cricinfo.

“This office can confirm that an incident occurred last night at about 21:15 at a hotel in Claremont where a 55-year-old British national

who worked as an Australian com-mentator committed suicide,” the statement said.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident are being conducted. An inquest docket has been opened for investigation,” it said.

“He was spoken to by local police on his return to the Southern Sun Hotel Newlands on Saturday night after he had been out to dinner,” the report said.

A statement issued by the ho-tel said “an incident that occurred at Southern Sun Newlands” was currently under full police investigation.

Melbourne, Nov 13 (IANS) Crick-eter turned commentator Peter Roebuck, who committed suicide on Saturday, was being questioned by police about an alleged sexual assault, according to media reports.

Cape Town police captain Fred-erick van Wyk confirmed police was investigating the death of Roe-buck, 55, who died about 9.15 p.m. Saturday, reports Herald Sun.

“It is understood he had been spoken to by Cape Town police, who were reportedly investigating sexual assault claims,” the report said.

“In 2001, the former Somerset captain was given a suspended jail sentence after admitting caning three young cricketers he had of-

fered to coach.”Asked if Roebuck had been in-

terviewed about sexual assault al-legations, van Wyk was quoted as saying in the report: “I cannot com-ment on that. We are investigating the death. I have nothing more to say.”.

Sydney Morning Herald, for whom Roebuck was covering the series, reported that he “fell to his death from a hotel window in Cape Town after being questioned by po-lice about an alleged sexual assault”.

“A Cape Town detective and a uniformed police officer from the sexual crimes unit began speaking with Roebuck, 55, in his room at the Southern Sun Hotel, Newlands, about 9 p.m.,” the paper reported.

“Roebuck, who was agitated, asked a fellow cricket journalist for help.” “Can you come down to my room quickly? I’ve got a problem,’ he said.” He asked for help to find a lawyer and for contact to be made with the students, that he helped to house in Pietermaritzburg, near Durban.”

“Minutes later Roebuck fell to his death from a window. It is believed only the uniformed officer was in the room. Paramedics rushed to the hotel but Roebuck was pro-nounced dead. Police established a crime scene and took personal items from the room, including a laptop,” the newspaper report said.

Bopanna-Qureshi win Paris Masters

Paris, Nov 13 (IANS) India's Rohan Bopanna and Pakistan's Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi captured their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title when they outclassed Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut 6-2, 6-4 in the BNP Paribas Masters final on Sunday.

The Indo-Pak Express was too strong for the French wild cards. This has been an eventful week for the duo as this win comes close to the heels of them becoming the seventh team to qualify for the prestigious Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

"This win gives us a lot of confi-dence, it is our biggest title by far," said Bopanna. "All the hard work over the years has paid off."

Bopanna and Qureshi had taken out No. 2 seeds Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic and No. 3 seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor to reach their first Masters 1000 final together. As champions, they earned 1000 ATP

Doubles Team Ranking points, tak-ing them to fifth in the year-to-date standings.

The seventh seeds made a strong start to Sunday's final at the Palais Omnisports, racing to a 5-2 double break advantage before closing out the first set in 29 minutes.

In the close second set, they broke down their French opponents in the ninth game before serving out victory in 64 minutes. They won 92 per cent of points behind their first serve and did not face a single break point.

The 2010 US Open runners-up were contesting their 11th tour-level final together and improved to a 4-7 mark. It was their third trophy of the season, following victories in June at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle and at last month's If Stockholm Open.

Federer wins his first Paris Masters 1000 titleParis, Nov 14 (IANS) World No. 4 Roger Federer has claimed his first BNP Paribas Masters 1000 title with a 6-1, 7-3 (3), victory over sixth-seed-ed Frenchman Joe Wilfried Tsonga.

The Swiss superstar will take a 12-match unbeaten streak to defend the Barclays World Tour title he won last year in London.

This is also the first time in Mas-ters 1000 history that all nine cham-pions during the season were ranked in the top four in the world.

Federer came under some pres-sure early in his match Sunday, but fought off two break points in the opening game and proceeded to break Tsonga in the next.

Federer, the first player to contest the final of all nine Masters 1000 tournaments, has now won 18 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crowns (18-12 in finals), tying him with Andre Agassi for second on the list of title leaders behind Rafael Nadal with 19.

Hamilton wins Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, both Force India’s in top-10

Abu Dhabi, Nov 13 (IANS) McLaren's Lewis Hamilton won his first race since July after Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel retired in the opening lap of the For-mula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix here on Sunday. Force India ended up with a double-point finish only for the third time in the season.

Hamilton crossed the chequered flag

ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and teammate Jenson Button for his third win of the year.

The day-night race started in a dra-matic fashion with newly-crowned World Champion Vettel spinning his Red Bull at the second corner due to a rear tyre puncture which resulted in his first retirement of the season.

Force India's Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta, who started ninth and tenth on the grid, gained a place each from Vet-tel's retirement and managed to hold on to it till the end of the 55-lap race.

Force India earned six points from the race and are hanging on to their sixth place with 57 points, 15 clear of the seventh-placed Sauber team.

England upset Spain 1-0 in football friendly

London, Nov 13 (IANS) A Frank Lampard goal in the 49th minute was enough to secure an upset 1-0 win for England over world and European champions Spain in an international football friendly late Saturday.

The usually sublime Spaniards struggled to match their elite billing as Lampard's second-half goal con-demned the visitors to just their sec-ond defeat in 10 matches.

Lampard's winner came when the Chelsea midfielder headed in from close range after Darren Bent's effort from a James Milner free-kick spun back off the post.

Lampard paid tribute to England's team spirit but said the squad was keeping their feet on the floor.

"For everyone it is a lift, but we have to be realistic. We know they

dominated the game for long peri-ods," Lampard was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

It is the fourth time Spain have lost in a friendly since their World Cup triumph in 2010, following on from defeats against Italy, Portugal and Argentina.

However, Del Bosque denied his team had taken England lightly.

"Yes, we have had four defeats, but I don't think we have taken any of these games lightly. You could see the intensity that the Spanish players competed with tonight. We played at 100 percent, at full pace.

"England only got near our goal with one chance from the free-kick. We dominated the game to a great degree."

Bolt, Pearson named IAAF athletes of the year Monaco, Nov 13 (IANS) Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and Australia's Sally Pearson, the world 100m hur-dles champion, were named IAAF athletes of the year here.

Bolt, the Olympic 100-metre champion, wins the award for the third time after being honoured in 2008 and 2009.

This year the 25-year-old nota-bly retained his 200m crown at the world championships in Daegu where he also helped Jamaica de-fend the 4x100m relay in a new world record time of 37.04 seconds.

In South Korea, Bolt squandered his chance to defend his world 100m crown when he was disqual-ified from the final for a false start,

allowing compatriot Yohan Blake to succeed him.

It was in Daegu that Pearson, 25, produced the fourth fastest time in history, and the fastest in 19 years, for the women's hurdles event which she dominated in a time of 12.21 seconds.

She becomes the first athlete from Oceania to be honoured by the IAAF since the awards were introduced in 1988.

Pearson won 10 of her 11 com-petitions and produced seven of the season's quickest 11 perfor-mances.

Both athletes will pick up cheques for $100,000 besides the award.

Berlin, Nov 13 (IANS) Miroslav Klose has returned to the German squad for Tuesday's friendly match against the Netherlands after miss-ing the friendly against Ukraine owing to an inflamed tendon in his left knee.

The 33-year-old could be paired up front with Bayern Munich strik-er Mario Gomez in what would be an experiment by coach Joachim Loew.

Loew usually prefers to start with one striker up front, Xinhua re-

ported.Loew also welcomed the return of

goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and mid-fielder Marco Reus, who both sat out the 3-3 draw with the Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine, the former being rested and the latter because of flu.

I wanted Esha to do something other than acting: Hema

New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS): Working in Bollywood is a demanding job, says Hema Malini adding that this is the reason why she was not very keen on her daughter Esha Deol joining filmdom as an actress. "It is difficult to survive in the industry. You have to go through so much in this career. You have to be successful, but if your movies don't work you are sad and then there comes a burden to do much better. You have to keep working harder and harder, emo-tionally it disturbs a lot," said Hema. "In other professions, it is not noticeable. Here you are immediately in the eyes of people that's why I was not very keen. I wanted her to do something else, something like interior designing, or be a dancer, but she wanted to act and everyone should be given an opportunity. She is indeed a very fine actress," she added. Hema re-launched Esha with her directorial venture "Tell Me O Kkhuda" but the film could not put a lasting impression on the audiences.
