The Burglary at the Vicarage

It occurred in the small hours of Whit – Monday, the day devoted in Iping to the Club festivities. Mrs. Bunting woke up suddenly before dawn, hearing the door of their bedroom open and close. She sat up in bed listening. Then she heard the pad, pad, pad of bare feet coming out of the adjoining dressing room walking along the passage towards the staircase. Now she aroused the Rev. Mr. Bunting as quietly as possible. Without striking a light he went out on the landing to listen. He distinctly heard a fumbling going on at his study desk down – stairs, and then a violent sneeze. Armed with a poker he descended the staircase as noiselessly as possible. Mrs. Bunting came out on the landing. The hour was about four. Everything was still. Then something snapped, the drawer was opened, and there was a rustle of papers. A match was struck and the study was flooded with yellow light. Mr. Bunting was now in the hall, and through the crack of the door he could see the desk and the open drawer and a candle burning on the desk. But there was no robber. They heard the chink of money, and realized that the robber had found the housekeeping reserve of gold – two pounds ten, all in half sovereigns. Gripping the poker firmly, Mr. Bunting rushed into the room.

“Surrender!” cried.

Mr. Bunting, fiercely. Mr. Bunting was close at his heels all the while. They stood amazed in the study. There was nobody to surrender.

The global Tiger Recovery Programme estimates the countries will need about $ 350 million in outside funding in the first five years of the 12-year plan. The summit will be seeking donor commitments to help the government finance conservation measures.

Section-A (Reading) (15 marks) A. 1 Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:-

BODY LANGUAGE

It is wrong to assume that we communicate only when we speak or write. Even when we are not speaking or writing, we may be communicating something. That is done through the use of our body. In fact non-verbal (without words) cues speak louder than the words. Non-verbal communication refers to body movements, appearance, tone of voice, gestures among other things. These silent signals have a strong effect on the receiver. In conversations , our facial expressions contribute 55% to the meaning making, ;tone 38% and spoken words contribute only 7% to the process. The human face can display 2,50,000 different expressions. Raising or lowering your eyebrow, squinting the eyes, swallowing nervously , clenching the jaw, smiling broadly, etc.- add to the meaning of words. Looking straight into the eyes and saying something shows trust and truthfulness. Even the physical appreance-clothing ,gait, postures, etc.- helps us to form opinion and judgements about the other person. We feel that if a person stands erect, he is proud, a person with hunched shoulders is generally shy. But many such clues are not the same all over the world. Every culture interprets them differently. For example, showing the thumb may be a sign of like; to some of us but in some cultures it is a rude gesture.

A.1.1 Choose the right option to complete the following sentences. (1*2=2)

a. In conversations , ……………………….. contribute most of the meaning making. (i) Dress we wear (iii) tones we use

b. Another word for body language used in the passage is: (i) Non-verbal clues (iii) gestures (ii) Expressions (iv) eyes movement

a. Body language is universal b. Body language cannot be called silent. c. A proud person generally stands with hunches shoulders. d. The word receiver in the passage is used for the speaker.

A.2.Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

At a casual glance no one would think that the two animals were even remotely relacted. The black footed mongoose, although still only a baby, measured too fit in length and stood about eight inches in height. She had

a blunt, rather dog-like face with dark, round and somewhat protubered eyes. Her body, head and tail were a rich creamy- white, while her slender legs were a rich brown that was almost black. She was sleek, sinuous and

svelte and reminded me of a soft- skinned parisienne belle-amie clad in n othing m ore tha n two pairs of black silk stokings. In contrast, the pigmy mongoose looked anything bur parisienne it measured, including tell, about ten inches in length. It had a tiny, sharply pointed face with a small, circular pink socks and a pair of small,

glittering, sherry-coloured eyes. The fur which was rather long and thick, was a deep chocolate brown with a faint ginger tinge here and there. Ticky, who was very much the grand dame , peered out of her cage at the new comer with something akin to horror on her face, watching it fascinated as it shrinked and grumbled over its meat. Ticky was herself a very dainty and fastidious feader and would never have dreamt of behaving In this uncouth way, yelling and screaming with your mouth full and generally carrying on as though you had never had a square meal in your life. She watched the pigmy for a moment or so and then gave a sniff of scorn turned round elegantly to over three times and then lay down and then went to sleep. A.2.1Find words from the passage which mean the same as the words given below: (0.5*4=2)

1. Distantly ………………………………. 3. Sparkling …………………………………

2 Fear ……………………………… 4. Delicate …………………………..

A.2.2 Change the words given in bold into plural:

One day, this gentleman was walking along a busy road, spinning his walking-stick round and round in his hand, and was trying to look important. A man walking behind him objected. “You ought not to spin your walking-stick round and round like that!” he said. “I am free to do what I like with my walking-stick,” argued the gentleman. ‘Of course you are,” said the other man, “but you ought to know that your freedom ends where my nose begins.” The story tells us that we can enjoy our rights and our freedom only if they do not interfere with other people’s rights and freedom. A.1.1. Answer the following questions: (1*5=5) 1. Why was the gentleman on the road moving his walking stick round and round? 2. Who objected him? 3. What argument did the gentleman give? 4. People moan about poverty as a great evil and it seems to be an accepted belief that if people had plenty of money, they would be happy, and get more out of life. As a rule there is more genuine satisfaction in life and more is obtained from life in the humble cottage of the poor man than in the palace of rich men, who are attended by servants and governesses at a later stage. At the same time I am glad to think they do not know what they have missed. It is because I know how sweet and happy and pure the home of honest poverty is, how free from perplexing care and social envies and jealousies, how loving and united the members are in the common interest of supporting the family that I sympathise with the rich man’s boy and congratulate the poor man’s son. It is for these reasons that from the ranks of the poor so many strong eminent self-reliant men have always sprung. If you read the list of the “Immortals who were not born to die” you will find that most of them have been poor.

1. What is the popular notion about poverty? (1*5=5)
