TRANSCRIPT
Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl was a British novelist, writer of short stories, screenwriter and fighter pilot. He was born in Wales on 13th September 1916. Before writing he also served in the Air Force and fought in World WarII. He was a flying ace and also an intelligence agent. Known as one of the greatest storytellers for children, he was in the list of ‘The 50 greatest British writers since 1945’. The BFG and Fantastic Mr Fox, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are his most famous books
NOTE= IN THIS CHAPTER WE ARE GOING TO STUDY AN EXTRACT FROM ‘CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY’.
Summary
➢ As they walk into the room, they're greeted with a bright, white light and they have to put on dark glasses so they don't hurt their eyes. ➢ The room is empty except at the ends: on one end, there's a big camera and a bunch of Oompa-Loompas. On the other end, there's one single Oompa-Loompa staring at a television set. All the Oompa-Loompas were
dressed in weird space suits and seemed very serious. This was no funny business. ➢ Mr. Wonka begins to explain what this room is for: television chocolate. With a few
ignored comments by Mike Teavee, he explains that television takes a picture and breaks it up into a million pieces just to put it back together on the other end for people to see. He can do the same thing with chocolate, he says.
➢ To prove it to the protesting Mike Teavee, he calls in the Oompa-Loompas, carrying a giant candy bar. It has to be giant because, like everything on TV, it always ends up looking smaller than it actually is. ➢ After a few more warnings, they get started and suddenly, the chocolate has disappeared and within seconds, ended up on the other end of the room in the TV set. ➢ It couldn't be, thinks Charlie, but Mr.
Wonka tells him to pick it up, and sure enough, there it is. Same thing, just smaller.

ECONTENT FOR THE WEEK 16.08.2021 TO 20.08.2021
CLASS : 04 SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS
DATE UPLOADED :14.08.2021
CHAPTER : MEASURES OF TIME
SUBTRACTION OF TIME
STEPS:
• First arrange the number of hours, minutes and seconds in columns.
• Subtract separately all the columns.
• Borrowing if required.
• After borrowing convert minutes to seconds in seconds column and
hours to minutes in minutes column as shown in the given examples.
EXAMPLE 1 :
Subtract 2 hrs 50 minutes 45 seconds from 5 hours 45 minutes 40 seconds
Sol:
Hours Minutes Seconds
4 (60 + 44 =104 ) (60 + 40 = 100 )
5 45 40 - 2 50 45
2 54 55
Step 1) 40 sec < 45 sec, so borrow 1 min that is 60 sec.
Now 60 + 40 = 100 sec.
Subtract 100 sec – 45 sec = 55 sec.
Step 2) After borrowing 1 min from 45 min we have,
45 min – 1 min = 44 min.
Now, 44 < 50. Hence, borrow 1 hr= 60 minutes.
Now, 60 + 44 = 104 min.
Subtract 104 min – 50 min = 54 min
Step 3) After borrowing 1 hour from 5 hours we have,
5 hrs – 1 hr = 4 hrs.
Now, 4 hrs – 2 hrs = 2 hrs. As shown in the above columns.
Example 2 : Subtract 6 years 10 months from 8 years 8 months.
Years Months
7 (12 + 8 =20 ) 8 8
- 6 10 1 10
Step 1) 8 months < 10 months, so borrow 1 year that is 12 months .
Now 12 months + 8 months = 20 months.
Subtract 20 months – 10 months = 10 months.
Step 2) After borrowing 1 year from 8 years we have,
8 years – 1 year = 7 years.
Now, 7 years – 6 years = 1 year.

Plants and Photosynthesis
Food making in leaves:
Plants depend on their leaves to make food.So they are called as kitchen of a plant or the food factory of a plant.
The process by which green plantsmake their own food with the help of water and carbon dioxide in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight is called Photosynthesis.
During photosynthesis, a leaf takes in carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen and water vapour through the stomata.
What happes to the food prepared by the plants?
It is transported throughout the plant by the stem and branches. Plants use some of this food to carry out its life processes. Rest of the food is stored in fruits, leaves, stems or roots in the form of
starch.
Assignment: I. Name any two:
a. Edible roots – b. Edible stems – c. Edible leaves – d. Edible seeds -
II. Answer the following questions:
Q1. Define photosynthesis.
Ans) The process by which green plants make their own food with the help of water and carbon dioxide in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight is called photosynthesis.
Q2. What happens to the food prepared by the plants?
Ans) The food prepared by the plant is used in the following ways:
a. Some of the food is burnt for energy and is used by the plant for its own growth and to repair worn out cells.
b. Extra food is converted and stored in the form of starch in different parts of a plant such as leaves (spinach), roots (carrot), fruits ( apples), stems (potatoes), flowers (cauliflower), and seeds (cereals).
Q3. Why is a leaf called as the food factory of the plants?
Ans) Plants depend on their leaves to make food.So they are called as kitchen of a plant or the food factory of a plant.
Q4. Write an activity to show thatgreen leaves have starch.
Ans) Aim: To show that starch is present in green leaves.
Material required: A green leaf, beaker, tripod stand, alcohol, iodine solution, petri dish, tongs and a dropper.
Method:
i. Take a green leaf and bleach it by boiling it in water and then in alcohol.
ii. Wash the leaf in cold water. iii. Add a few drops of iodine.
Observation: The bleached leaf turns blue-black by the addition of iodine solution.
Conclusion: This shows that starch is present in a green leaf.
Q4. Draw, colour and label a diagram to show the process of photosynthesis.
