A starstudded Indian OilCorporation (IOC) hasn’tplayed very well, even theteam management admittedit as much. A few of itsplayers fell ill on arrival, afew have injuries. As a teamthat adjusts to the situationand plays well within its limitations, IOC has done thatreasonably well.
When it takes on CentralSecretariat (CST) in the semifinals of the MCCMurugappa Gold Cup AllIndia hockey tournament here onSaturday, it will hope its starplayers — all internationalsincluding Deepak Thakur,V.R. Raghunath, S.K. Uthappa, Affan Yousuf, GurjinderSingh and Roshan Minz —rise to the occasion andmake it count.
After a moderate performance, CST upped the antein a mustwin match againstPunjab and Sind Bank, witha thumping show. But it willhave to come up with so
mething special to overcomeIOC.
Under the radar
Punjab National Bank (PNB)was under the radar in itsfirst two matches. It lost badly to Bengaluru HA, butslowly got into the groovewith a win over Air Force.Against Indian Army, itplayed to a wonderful structure, defending well and attacking in waves.
Mandeep Mor showedwhy he is rated so high witha wonderful drag flickagainst IOC in their lastgroup match for a 33 draw, agoal that ensured it reachedthe knockout.
PNB’s head coach Romesh Pathania will hope histeam puts up a strong showagainst Indian Navy, whichhas been the best team, without a doubt.
Possessing only a juniorInternational in Sunny Malik, Navy has been exceptional. If the performance inthe group stages is any indication, Navy will be the teamto beat.
