There is one thing every commander in the United States Power Squadrons®

wants these days… More Members! I spoke about this last year and I’m going to

talk about it again. It’s great to teach classes, which we do, and it’s great to learn

from each other, which we do, and it’s really great to have fun, which we do A

LOT! But without new members we will cease to exist! This is a very real prob-

lem that a lot of squadrons are having and one that we have faced before and are

still facing.

Now that we can teach the PA state class to meet our teaching requirement, we

can teach without cost to us, which is a big help, but those of us that are teaching

still need help enticing the new students in to join us for an event and so that they

start thinking about becoming members. The best way to do this is face to face.

You can get a feel for whether they are interested or not and they know who you

are when you reach out to them later! We have had four new members join this

year so far and Doug and Keith have a few more that want to be kept updated.

These are the ones that we need to put the effort into keeping but it shouldn’t be

put on the shoulders of just a few. I would love to see more members come out to

our ABC class on 9 and 16 April to meet the students and even bring snacks.

Lord knows they need snacks after listening to Doug and Gary and Keith and me

talking for several hours! I know I need sugar after listening to those guys teach!

The other thing we need is to get our new members involved! Five of our six most

recent new members are currently taking Seamanship and I intend to sell them on

a few more events before testing week rolls around, so let’s make them feel wel-

come! Because soon, as the next step to getting new members, we’re going to be

needing to hit one or more of them up to help out and even to serve on the bridge.

I’d like to extend another big thank you to all of you for putting up with me! For

understanding that my stubbornness was going to get the bylaws done one way or

another and supporting my efforts! For encouraging the Educational Department

to find a way to teach the ABC course for free! And as I say a final thank you, I

will leave you with the sound of my laughing voice as I remind you that you’ve

got a whole other year of putting up with my crazy maniacal ways, so good luck

and let’s make this year better than the last!

Ahoy Mates! Warm weather is right around

the corner and boating season is almost here!

Just a few more weeks and we’ll be back in

love to fill the class with students!

We have a few instructors that need to renew

their Instructor Development certification.

Keith, Ed, Gary, and Brent’s certification will

expire in 2016. We will run the certification

class in April to insure Delhigh always has

good instructors available.

As of this writing, our latest Seamanship class

is almost over, and we will have five new

members eligible for Piloting!

I want to thank all the members who got in-

volved in teaching a class this past year, and I

hope we can count on all of you to help with

the next run through Piloting and the other

advanced courses!

First of all, we would like to thank all who

attended the Change-of-Watch at the Meadows in

Hellertown, PA. Twenty three members attended to

welcome Kathleen Nowroozani as this year’s com-

mander. We enjoyed fine food and company at

this celebration. A big thank you to D/C “Fuzzy”

Jones, AP for officiating and P/C Brent Rhoads, JN

for being master of ceremonies.

From 31 March to 3 April, the D/5 Spring Confer-

ence will be at the Princess Royal Hotel in Ocean

City, Maryland.

FISHING FOR AN EXCUSE TO WEAR LIFE JACKETS

Or

FISHING IS MORE DANGEREOUS THAN YOU THINK

Ask any experienced boater about life jackets and they will tell you that they put them on at the first sign of danger. Ask those same people if they think fishing is inherently dangerous and they will probably say no. Unfortunately this is a severe disconnect in boating safety logic.

There is something almost hypnotic about fishing. Fishermen get so entranced in the act of catching a fish that they wander off shore without an EPIRB or radio and believe they are protected with insuf-ficient near shore life jackets. They get so focused on catching a fish that they fail to see approach-ing weather. When they do see an approaching storm they refuse to head for safety if the fish are bit-ing. If they have a fish on the line, it is “Katie Bar the Door” until that fish is landed.

My home State of Florida has the highest mortality rate per boating accident in the Nation. In just the past few months there have been several needless deaths, all to fishermen. One man was reported missing and was found drowned near his 16 foot boat. His fishing rod was floating nearby with a fish still on the line. Recently a man in the Florida Keys was fishing with a companion. He hooked a fish and in the process of landing it, fouled the fishing line on his outboard propeller. Leaning over to free it, he fell overboard and drowned. I bet these men didn’t think that fishing was dangerous since nei-ther one was wearing a life jacket.

The majority of fishing is done in a 16 to 24 foot craft. National statistics show that the majority of boating accidents happen on small craft. This immediately puts you at risk. While your best protec-tion on the water is an off shore life jacket, I know they are too bulky to ask an active fisherman to wear. This is one instance where a type 5 inflatable life jacket may be a reasonable alternative. These safety devices are no more bulky to wear than a pair of suspenders. While the models with automatic inflators are a little pricey, those with a pull cord inflator are quite reasonable and simple to operate. Fishermen please believe me. The sport of fishing is dangerous and you should have a life jacket on at all times. If you don’t believe me I will be glad to direct you to the families of the two men mentioned above. Perhaps they can convince you!

Cyber Members

I have mentioned several times that you can go to Cyber Search in the Site Index to find Cyber and

USPS University students in your area. As we have transitioned to a new website, the Cyber Search

feature has stopped working. It is being worked on and will be back in operation at a later time. Keep

checking. Email: Robert Howd

WOW Training Aids—Make Your Illustrations Stand Out

Calling all instructors. Do you want a great set of demonstration tools to show students the various chal-

lenges faced by boaters? Check out the Member Benefits website for WOW Training Aids. Each item is

handmade and works on multiple surfaces. You will be pleasantly surprised at the quality. Make your life

easier, and check it out. Email: Kristi Anderson

USPS Emergencies On Board Webinar 19 April 2016

With the cruising season about to start, it’s time to prepare your boat and crew. With that in mind, the

Marine Environment Committee is offering the Emergencies on Board webinar. This new, updated webi-

nar covers tools and equipment for handling emergencies, new emergency techniques, and handling

trauma and medical emergencies. The webinar also provides new information on CPR and AEDs along

with ideas about medical kits for cruising. Click to register now. Email: Robert F. Anderson

Educational Department Pilot Program

The Educational Department is asking squadrons that plan on presenting a Seamanship class in the next

90 to 120 days to consider joining the pilot program that will use an e-book for the student manual. Inter-

ested Squadron Educational Officers should email me for program particulars. Email: William J.

BSVT 3.0 New Functionality and Troubleshooting Seminar

The third generation of features and functionality for the Boating Skills Virtual Trainer was introduced at

the 2016 USPS Annual meeting in Orlando, Florida. The compass now has numbers, and an additional

working compass rose on the minimap provides opportunities for bearings and piloting exercises. A new

trailering/boat ramp exercise and increased wave/wind action will challenge the most proficient of boat-

ers. Continued improvements in close-quarter forward/reverse response for more realistic docking and

new startup procedures have solved throttle calibration issues. Remember to track all users and turn in

forms to me for Coast Guard grant reporting. If you have a member who is comfortable with computer

troubleshooting and would like to participate in further training with VDI, please email his or her email

address and contact info to me to be scheduled for upcoming training. Email: Lisa Herndon Wilson
