SITE INTRODUCTION:

How did Singapore get its name?

According to legend, during the 14th century, Sang Nila Utama, a Prince from Palembang (the

capital of Srivijaya), was out on a hunting trip when he caught sight of an animal he had never seen

before. Taking it to be a good sign, he founded a city where the animal had been spotted, naming it

“The Lion City” or Singapura, from the Sanskrit words “simha” (lion) and “pura” (city).

How big is Singapore?

Singapore has 716.1km2 of land area, compared to Hong Kong’s 1,104km2. However, within

this small piece of land, there are 300 parks; 63 islands and 4 nature reserves. One of the reserves,

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, has more species of trees than the whole of North America. This may

be reason why Singapore is also called “The Garden City”.

What’s the weather like?

As Singapore is located at 1.5∘north of the Equator (or 137km north of the Equator), the

average lowest temperature is 23∘C, with the lowest temperature ever recorded in 1934 being 19.4∘C.

However, they do have four seasons, namely Hot, Hotter, Wet and Wetter.

Who live there?

Within this small country, there is a mix of many cultures and different languages are spoken.

The four main languages are English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamll. Singaporean population is 5.39

million as of 2014. More than 70% of the population are Chinese, 13.3% are Malay and 9.2% are

Indian. It has the sixth-highest percentage of foreigners in the world (42%). With so many cultures,

Singapore is naturally a food paradise. World-famous chef Gordon Ramsay challenged local hawkers

to cook-off in 2013. The result? He lost.

Can you tell me about the economy landscape in Singapore?

The Lausanne School of Management (IMD) announced its global

competitiveness report that Singapore ranks first in 63 countries and regions around

the world in 2019. Besides, Singapore retained its position as the second freest economy in the

world for the 24th consecutive year and ranked 3rd GDP per capita among all countries.

A fun fact for those who pay attention to details: the national anthem’s full lyrics in Malay are

printed in micro-text on the back of the $1,000 note.

Observations to Compare and Contrast

Page 21: DELIA MEMORIAL SCHOOL (BROADWAY)Take photos, videos or make records of the things you see. Be familiarized with the itinerary. Do not bring any NDS, PSP, Switch or video game device

21

Comparative Study: Focus on Singapore

Select one area to focus on: Public Transport

Food

Education

Housing

Politics

Others (seek teacher’s approval)

We want you to research your selected focus area and prepare a presentation that you will give to the Singapore Excursion group during the post-examination period. Your presentation can be paper based (e.g. project book, poster, essay format) or it can be digitally prepared, (e.g. PowerPoint, Word document, Video, etc…)

You should:

- Read about the current situation in Singapore, specifically your chosen topic - Make detailed notes about how ‘it’ works in Singapore - Compare it with the same topic in Hong Kong - What are the main differences? - How are they different? - Why are they different?

Try to include photographs from the excursion to enhance your project. Primary sources of information are a good way to develop your presentations.
