Opportunities across the healthcare industry Rethinking information processing for genomic and medical data
Real-world examples in healthcare SAP HANA platform is well-suited to the specific needs of the healthcare industry, where much of the data is
unstructured. You can run natural-language processing and text analytics technology in conjunction with SAP
HANA to draw information from free-form text such as social media and electronic medical records. That
information can then be integrated with structured data sets for further analysis. Real-time data analysis will play
a critical role in driving new development in many medical models. In fact, leading companies across industry
segments are already seeing compelling benefits by putting new strategies and supporting technologies
in place.

Supporting better healthcare decisions Evidence-based medicine
In a hospital like Charité,weseeanunendingstreamofdataeveryday.Andit’sofutmostimportance
that we collect this data – and filter and control it – and reuse it for patient care, or for teaching, or for
driving research. . . . In the medical field, it is critical that we move away from the flood of paper that is
overwhelming doctors today; that we continually move toward electronic data capture.
Prof. Dr. Karl Max Einhäupl, Chief Executive Officer, Charité
Observation and careful analysis of the evidence have always
been fundamental to medical advancement. But the scale has
changed. Now, massive amounts of internal and external data
must be consolidated and analyzed. This includes personal
electronic medical records and extensive findings from clinical
research.
Using huge sample sizes and more complete data sets, patterns
can be discovered that previously might have gone unnoticed.
Research institutions can use SAP HANA to conduct detailed
analyses of hundreds of thousands of patient cases, each
with hundreds of thousands of data points. And researchers
can gain answers in seconds rather than hours. The positive
outcomes include more time for research, better quality results,
and improved treatments for the future.

Supporting better healthcare decisions Personalized medicine
AOK wants to analyze patient data, prescription data, and insurance data to find patterns that increase
the likelihood of an illness later in life. You can then reach out to the insured right away and offer
preventive care.
Udo Patzelt, Requirements Management, AOK Systems
Medical advancements such as genetic testing and molecular diagnostics are fueling a greater focus on personalized medicine. A more predictive approach to treatment results in better preventive programs. The new standard may well be identifying and averting medical problems well before they arise. The result: healthier patients and the potential for significantly lower healthcare costs. Insurance providers worldwide are looking to offer personalized healthcare programs to large customer bases. Using SAP HANA platform can help identify patterns of illness through analysis of billions of diagnoses and massive amounts of other medical data. Using this insight to provide superior, affordable healthcare services will differentiate insurers from the competition. Individualized preemptive health programs can help clients avoid illness, while insurers can limit the need for expensive and sometimes unnecessary treatments.

Supporting better healthcare decisions Medical genetics
MKI wants to deliver advanced medical treatments to as many patients as possible by introducing real-
time, Big Data analysis into healthcare. . . . If we can deliver the analysis [of genome extraction] by the
end of the day before the patient leaves the hospital, this can revolutionize cancer treatment processes
in the future.
Yukihisa Kato, CTO and Director, Mitsui Knowledge Industries (MKI)
Full genome sequencing provides raw data on 6 billion letters of an individual’sDNA.It’snosurprisethatthefirsthumangenomeproject took more than 10 years to complete. Now the emphasis is on genome interpretation and the mining of that data for clinically actionable information. Researchers are comparing genome sequences among large sample groups to better understand target genetic markers. This could accelerate the development of treatmentsfordiseasessuchascancerandAlzheimer’s.
Life science companies offering genome analytic services are
integral to this effort. With SAP HANA, data that once took two
days to process can be analyzed in minutes. This can translate
into faster and more accurate diagnoses, better patient care with
fewer doctor visits, and expedited pharmaceutical discoveries with
lower development costs.

Supporting better healthcare decisions Medical device lifecycle management
Having data in a searchable format and being able to provide it in an ad hoc report is a game changer.
. . . We serve a patient every four seconds, there are seven million patients per year, so you can
imagine the huge amounts of unstructured text data we capture.
Brian Raver, Senior Manager – BI Strategy, Medtronic
Implanted medical devices can help extend and improve the quality of life. As a result, millions of patients receive devices such as artificial hips and implantable cardioverter defibrillators each year. Proactively managing these devices and analyzing their ongoing performance is critical to ensuring patient safety and mitigating potential risks. Monitoring and responding to patient feedback is an important part of product improvement.
Companies can use SAP HANA to analyze large amounts of
data in global customer service systems. This includes
multisource data acquisition and the ability to handle long,
unstructured data. For example, company analysts can work with
up to 15,000 characters in a single business warehouse object.
