Grow Your Own in AprilPlenty to keep you busy in April – and no need to faff about indoors as with any luck it’ll be warm enough to sow directly into the lovely soil. If you notice that as you spend more time digging, the happier you become then this could be no coincidence. New research has identified the bacterium mycobacterium vaccae in soil, which mirrors the effect on neurons that Prozac has by aiding the production of serotonin. Gardeners absorb it through inhalation, topical contact and via abrasions in the skin. A truly legal and healthy high!

I’ve been having a look round the internet for some allotment info and found out a few interesting facts. There are 152,432 plots in the UK with an average waiting list size of 52 people per 100 plots in 2013 as opposed to 1 person per 100 plots in 1970. That’s an increase in demand to rival the increase in house prices! I was, in fact, looking to find some statistics on the proportion of women allotment holders as both my neighbouring plotholders are women and I wondered if this was representative. The most uptodate info I could find before I became ‘Google blind’ was from 1997 where 16% of plotholders were found to be women – and less than 50% were retired which debunks the image of the traditional allotment holder.

I finally decided to commit myself regarding the last available bit of space on the plot and dug a hole and sunk a half barrel in, making a small pond. Hopefully I’ll attract a frog to use my new facility and help himself to as many slugs as he likes. Incidentally, I stumbled upon a radio programme about slugs and found out the following: firstly, there are a surprising 46 varieties of slug and, more interestingly for the gardener, the large leopard slug (brown with black speckled markings – up to 16cm length) is a carnivore that feeds on … small black slugs. So – make sure you don’t kill / humanely relocate any of that variety!

I’ve been thinking about carrots, which you can sow directly outdoors now, as I la-boriously riddle the soil in my new dedicated carrot bed. Once riddled, I’ll be adding horticultural sand and hopefully creating a bed where carrots can grow long, deep and straight (not forking off in 10 directions – amusing but hard to peel). Incidentally there’s a variety of carrot beginning with every letter of the alphabet except ‘x’.
