Functions

Express Test performs a quick test of devices. This typically can take 10 to 20 minutes and requires no interaction on your part. Run Express Test first to increase the odds of tracing the problem quickly.

Extended Test performs a thorough check of devices. This typically can take an hour or more and requires you to answer questions periodically.

Starting September 30th, 2002, the Latitude C640 / Inspiron 4150 Resource CDs will ship with a utility that will enable a Dell technician to restore the Dell Diagnostics to a customer's hard drive. If a customer formats their C: drive, the Diagnostics partition is not affected and does not require a restoration. A customer who has debugged their hard drive or has received a replacement hard drive will require the partition to be restored.



Blast will remove any existing

information from their hard drive. Blast will not dynamically resize or

change existing partitions on the hard drive.



Running the Restore The following steps will restore the diagnostics partition to

a Latitude C640 / Inspiron 4150: 1. Boot to the Latitude C640 / Inspiron 4150 CD. 2. At the Dell Diagnostics menu, choose X to exit

to DOS. 3. Type blast 4. The file will run and warn you that creating a

UP partition will destroy all data on the harddrive. Press any key to continue or press CTRL-C to exit.



6. Upon completion, the user will be prompted that the system will now reboot and that blast must be run again to seal the partition.

7. Reboot the system to the Resource CD again. 8. At the Dell Diagnostics menu, choose X to exit to DOS. 9. Type blast

partition and will begin copying the Dell Diagnostics files

from the cd to the newly created partition.

11. Upon completion, the user will be left with a DOS prompt.

12. When finished, the restore process will have created a 24meg non-DOS partition on the hard drive. The rest of the hard drive will be unpartitioned space. Installing an OS will require creating a primary partition on the hard drive.

1. Boot to the Resource CD. 2. At the Dell Diagnostics menu, choose X to exit to DOS. 3. Type blast 4. The file will run and warn you that creating a UP

partition will destroy all data on the hard drive. Press any key to continue or press CTRL-C to exit.

5. The user will be prompted that the system will now reboot and that blast must be run again to seal the partition.

6. Boot from the operating system cd-rom and continue with creating partitions and reinstall the os.
