Start Successfully About Dell Mobile Sync

Dell Mobile Sync is an easy to use application which allows you to synchronize (“sync”) me-dia files between your Mac and your Android smartphone. The application is especially de-signed for the Dell Streak and Dell Thunder smartphones. With Dell Mobile Sync, you can transfer your favorite photo albums, videos, music albums and podcasts from iTunes and iPhoto to your Android smartphone. You can also save photos, music, and videos from your Android smartphone onto your Mac.

Although Dell Mobile Sync has been specifically designed for the Android smart-phones Dell Streak and Dell Thunder, it also supports other USB storage devices such as USB sticks. If you connect a USB storage device to your Mac and it is recognized by Dell Mobile Sync, this device is indicated in the toolbar of Dell Mo-bile Sync as USB Mass Storage Device. All descriptions and instructions regard-ing sync settings and syncing given in this manual also apply to USB storage devices.

Installing the Application The installation procedure for Dell Mobile Sync is quick and easy.

To install Dell Mobile Sync on your Mac, proceed as follows:

1. Double-click the Dell Mobile Sync.dmg image file you have downloaded.

2. The Dell Mobile Sync.dmg window is opened, showing the End-User License Agreement (EULA).

3. Read the EULA carefully, then click the Agree button to proceed with the installation process. The Dell Mobile Sync icon is created on your desktop, representing the mounted Dell Mo-bile Sync.dmg image file. The Dell Mobile Sync window is opened.

4. In the Dell Mobile Sync window, drag the Dell Mobile Sync icon either to the Applications folder within the window or to any other desired location.

You have successfully installed Dell Mobile Sync. You can now start the Dell Mobile Sync application by double-clicking the Dell Mobile Sync icon in the location you dragged it to.

Dell Mobile Sync 6

After you have installed Dell Mobile Sync, it is recommended that you unmount the Dell Mobile Sync image. You can unmount it as any other image on your Mac: Either drag-and-drop the Dell Mobile Sync icon representing the mounted image file to the Trash, or right-click it and select the Eject “Dell Mobile Sync” entry in the context menu. However, you should not delete the Dell Mobile Sync.dmg image file. Instead, save it to your desired location in case you need it again for installation purposes.

Working With the Application Dell Mobile Sync can act as sync manager between your Mac and your Android smartphone. Its interface allows you to easily transfer media files from Mac to Android smartphone and vice versa. The basis for all sync processes between your Mac and your Android smart-phone are iTunes, iPhoto, and the Movies folder of your Mac user account. The sync func-tion ensures that you have the same music, photos, videos, and podcasts on your Android smartphone as on your Mac, without duplicates within a playlist or album.

Due to technical reasons, iTunes does not prevent the duplication of audio files on your Mac. Therefore, if you import the Music folder from your Android smart-phone to your Mac several times, any audio file that has been present on your Mac before the sync process will be duplicated as many times as you have ex-ecuted the sync process.

To sync media files, you will go through the following steps:

● Start Dell Mobile Sync on your Mac.

● Connect your Android smartphone to your Mac with a matching USB cable.

● Activate the USB Mass Storage function on your Android smartphone if necessary.

● Specify the desired sync settings. They are available via the media categories Music, Photos, Videos and Podcasts in Dell Mobile Sync on your Mac.

● Click the Sync button in Dell Mobile Sync.

A separate window within Dell Mobile Sync informs you about the current sync progress. After the sync process has been completed, you will be informed about how many files have been synced.

The Dell Mobile Sync window is divided into three main areas:

● A toolbar on the top which displays the connected and recognized devices as well as the Sync button

● A navigation area on the left with the ACTIVE DEVICE and the MEDIA areas

● A device and sync settings area on the right with a dynamic display for each category of the ACTIVE DEVICE and the MEDIA areas

Dell Mobile Sync window

In the toolbar of Dell Mobile Sync, all devices which are connected to your Mac and recog-nized by Dell Mobile Sync are displayed. The display in the toolbar may vary, depending on the devices connected to your Mac. If more than one device is connected to your Mac, the display in the toolbar allows you to switch between the devices so you can see the details and specify the sync settings of each device separately.

When you specify the sync settings for a device, they will be automatically saved. However, you need to specify the sync settings separately for each device. After that, whenever you reconnect a device to your Mac and open Dell Mobile Sync, the previously specified sync settings will be available.

Dell Mobile Sync 9

On the right side of the toolbar, you will find the Sync button. This button is always visible, no matter which device or media category you have selected. However, it is only active if a device is connected to your Mac and recognized in Dell Mobile Sync. The navigation area on the left is divided into the ACTIVE DEVICE and the MEDIA areas. The ACTIVE DEVICE area displays the device you have selected in the toolbar. If you click the device in this area, further details of the device will be displayed on the right side of the Dell Mobile Sync window. The MEDIA area lists the media categories (Music, Photos, Videos, and Podcasts). When you click one of the categories, you can see the relevant sync settings of this category on the right side of the Dell Mobile Sync window. The Apple menu bar of Dell Mobile Sync is displayed independently from the Dell Mobile Sync window and provides most of the functions that are available in the application itself. It allows you to jump to the single sync settings screens and to connect or eject a device. Starting the sync process is also possible via the Apple menu bar.

ACTIVE DEVICE Area The ACTIVE DEVICE area displays the details of the device you have selected in the tool-bar. Next to the device in the ACTIVE DEVICE area, you will find an eject button ( ). Use this button to safely remove the device from your Mac.

Sync Folders When you sync media files to your Android smartphone with Dell Mobile Sync for the first time, a MobileSync directory is created on your smartphone. In the MobileSync directory, a folder is created for each media category that you sync to your smartphone. The folder names reflect the media categories which are available in the application. The following fold-ers are created in the MobileSync directory:

● Music

● Photos

● Podcasts

● Videos

Additionally, when you drag single files onto Dell Mobile Sync for the first time, a Dra-gAndDrop folder is created in the MobileSync directory on your smartphone. The reason for this is that the single files that you drag onto Dell Mobile Sync are not sorted into the sin-gle media category folders, but only into the DragAndDrop folder.

Music, photos or videos that you sync from your Android smartphone to your Mac using Dell Mobile Sync can be accessed in iTunes and/or iPhoto after the sync process.

Config folder on your Android smartphone

As soon as the media category folders are created in the MobileSync directory on your Android smartphone, a Config folder is created as well. It contains infor-mation on what has been synced, and with which settings. Do not delete this fold-er. If you delete it, previous sync runs cannot be resumed.

Syncing Files Dell Mobile Sync allows you to synchronize media files between your Mac and your Android smartphone. The basis for all sync processes between your Mac and your Android smart-phone are iTunes, iPhoto and the Movies folder of your Mac user account. The sync func-tion ensures that you have the same music, photos, videos, and podcasts on your Android smartphone as on your Mac, without duplicates within a playlist or album.

The following requirements must be fulfilled:

► Your Android smartphone is connected to your Mac via USB and recognized by Dell Mobile Sync.

► iTunes and iPhoto are installed and have been opened at least once.

5. If you want to sync all your audio files, select the All songs and playlists option button.

Dell Mobile Sync 21

Automatic deletion of files from your Android smartphone

If you deselect playlists, albums, videos or podcasts in the sync settings screens that have been synced before, the corresponding files are deleted from your An-droid smartphone when you click the Sync button. The sync function ensures that the media files are not duplicated on your smart-phone within a playlist or album, even if you sync the same media category twice. Therefore, do not deselect already synced playlists, albums, videos or podcasts unless you want to delete the corresponding files from your smartphone.

8. If you want to transfer music from your Android smartphone to your Mac:

1. Select the Import music from phone check box. The Delete music on phone after sync check box and the Select import folders but-ton are activated.

2. If you want to delete the transferred audio files from your phone after syncing, select the Delete music on phone after sync check box.

3. Click the Select import folders button. The folder selection window is opened.

4. Select the folders from which you want to import audio files. 5. Click the Close button.

The folder selection window is closed.

9. Repeat the previous steps for all other media categories and devices if applicable.

10. Click the Sync button in the toolbar in the upper right corner of the Dell Mobile Sync window. The Syncing window is opened. The progress of the sync process is displayed with a progress bar.

After the sync process is completed, the Completed screen is displayed. It indicates how many media files have been synced.

Completed screen

You have synced media files between your Mac and your Android smartphone.

If you want to sync single files instead of playlists, albums or folders, simply drag the desired files onto Dell Mobile Sync. The files will be transferred to the Dra-gAndDrop folder in the Mobile Sync directory which was created on your device the first time you started the sync process with Dell Mobile Sync.
