High availability remote/branch office usage Key Customer Benefits
Performance The PowerEdge 1600SC incorporates the Intel Xeon processors, ServerWorks GC-SL chipset, PC2100 DDR SDRAM, PCI-X and Ultra320 SCSI. Advantages of these performance features include:
• The Intel Xeon processor with up to 2MB cache brings revolutionary advancements in technology to dual processor servers with NetBurst™ micro-architecture and Hyper-Threading Technology.
• The GC-SL chipset supports dual Xeon processors and Intel NetBurst microarchitecture, providing a 533 MHz system bus for performance for dual-processor-multi-threaded applications or multitasking environments.
• Hyper-Threading – which allows the OS to view the processor as two logical processors – helps improve performance because multiple tasks can be run simultaneously. As a result, the technology is designed to enable a platform to support more users or process more transactions than a processor without this technology.
• PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory channels offer a maximum memory bandwidth of 3.2 GB/s through a 144-bit wide, 266 MHz Double Data Rate SDRAM memory interface.
• The next generation I/O, PCI eXtended (PCI-X or PCIx), provides high bandwidth, low latency, and dedicated hardware interfaces between internal chips and peripheral cards. There are 2 PCI-X slots on the PowerEdge 1600SC – 2 x 64-bit/100MHz – in addition to 4 PCI slots for 6 total slots.
• The PowerEdge 1600SC includes an embedded Gigabit Ethernet NIC. The embedded Gigabit NIC provides customers with a cost effective, high performance solution when used as the primary LAN controller. The embedded NIC is backward compatible to 10/100 Mb/s speeds.
System Availability The PowerEdge 1600SC offers system availability features like an ECC memory, systems monitoring hardware, optional hot-plug hard drives, optional hot plug power supplies, optional remote management, optional SCSI or IDE TBU, and optional SCSI and IDE RAID choices.
• PowerEdge 1600SC makes protecting data through RAID flexible and affordable. The 1600SC supports the PERC 4/SC and PERC3/SC RAID
Dell Enterprise Systems Group Page 5 February 2004
PCI cards for SCSI RAID or the CERC RAID PCI card for IDE RAID. Either of these add-in options provides the flexibility of RAID levels 0, 1, or 5, factory configured, all at an affordable price.

• PowerEdge 1600SC can be configured with easy-to-service, hot plug redundant power supplies. This option helps maximize system uptime by providing a second power supply to keep the server up-and-running in the event of a power supply failure.
• Dell PowerVaultTM Tape backup products are designed to back up large amounts of data, easily manage backups and restores and the investment protection required to grow. The PowerEdge 1600SC supports either SCSI or IDE internal tape drives. External storage is not supported.
Scalability Scalability features for the PowerEdge 1600SC include an optional second processor, increased memory (up to 4GB), internal storage, and additional PCI cards.
• The PowerEdge 1600SC is scalable to 4GB of DDR SDRAM, allowing server memory to increase as application demands increase.
• Six I/O slots provide room for additional functionality and future expansion.
• The PowerEdge 1600SC has the potential for up to nearly one Terabyte of storage, with 876GB maximum SCSI internal hard disk storage.

Comparison of the PowerEdge 1600SC vs. PowerEdge 600SC
The PowerEdge 600SC is Dell’s sub-entry workgroup server offering. Like its name implies, the sub-entry segment is the most price-sensitive segment. Generally, these products are designed for use for non-mission-critical applications since the extremely low price point prevents the inclusion of dual processing and some availability and scalability features. Table 5 compares the feature-set of the PowerEdge 600SC to the PowerEdge 1600SC.
