DELMIA’s Best in Class Human Solutions

Manufacturing organizations around the world con-tinue to design and develop machines, vehicles, and products that are capable of performing better, faster, and longer. An increasingly important designconsideration is to ensurethat these technologicalinnovations are beingdesigned from theperspective of thepeople who actuallybuild, maintain, andoperate them. From afactory worker to anaircraft pilot—today’smanufacturers mustconsider these HumanFactors (HF) early inthe product life cycle.

DELMIA’s HumanSolutions, fully integrat-ed into the DELMIADigital Process for Manufacture (DPM) solutions, provides such organizations with a suite of humansimulation and HF tools specifically geared towardsunderstanding and optimizing the relationshipbetween humans and the products they manufac-ture, install, operate and maintain.

To ensure competitiveness in the global market-place, manufacturing organizations are becomingincreasingly aware of the value in designing manu-

facturing facilities specifically geared to the skillsand limitations of the local workforce. Ensuring thatemployees are used to their maximum potential—ina safe, ergonomically efficient environment—can bedetermined by combining DELMIA’s extensiveHuman Solutions portfolio with an organization’s

human factors ‘know-how’.

People are Important

In the demanding globalmarketplace, ensuring thathuman fit, form and func-tion are comprehensivelyaddressed is becoming anincreasingly importantaspect of design.Manufacturers and design-ers strive to develop prod-ucts that conform to all rel-evant Health and Safetystandards and are “user-

friendly” while still maximiz-ing the productivity of their own workforce.

Digital human modeling technology can assist adesigner in determining the performance of peoplein the context of a workplace or a product before itexists and throughout its entire lifecycle.

Total Design Lifecycle Human Modeling

Creating and developing products based on thecapabilities and limitations of people is not a newconcept. Human Factors (HF) Engineering hasproven that every stage of a product lifecycle hasa common component—people. People whomanufacture, people whoinstall, people whooperate, people whomaintain.

Plan, Define andValidate

The DELMIA Humansolutions are fully inte-grated into the DELMIADPM solutions. Thisseamless integrationprovides an intuitivecomponent in thedesign process, trulysupporting the conceptof user-centered design. Inrecognition of the varying requirements of anorganization, DELMIA has specifically designedand packaged the Human Solutions to ensure thatthe appropriate amount of technology is placed oneach user’s desktop.

Human Builder

Human Builder permits the intuitive creation andmanipulation of accurate standard digital human

for initial worker-product interaction analysis.Human Builder offers a user-friendly interface andensures that first level Human Factors studies canbe undertaken by non-Human Factors specialists.Simple pull-down menus are used to create maleand female standard manikins (Name, Gender,

5th, 50th, 95th percentile). The sophisticatedmanikin structure con-sists of 99 independentlinks, segments andellipses. In addition, themanikin possesses fullyarticulated hand, spine, shoulder, and neckmodels to accuratelyreproduce natural move-ment, which includesseven default InverseKinematics for manikinmotion. The DELMIAHuman Manikin is inter-actively positioned using

the compass, or by select-ing objects to be reached. Direct kinematicsmanipulators can be employed to accurately "finetune" manikin posture by manipulating individualsegments in each degree of freedom.

Manikin vision assessment permits a designer tounderstand what an operator or maintainer would"see" in a task environment. A separate vision win-dow displays the vision field from the manikin per-spective to assess visual disability or limitations.

See what they see: Visual characteristicsare displayed as cones that permit theuser to gain an insight into the worker’sview of the operation or task.

Human Task Simulation

DELMIA Human Task Simulation is a powerfulhuman modeling tool used to create, validate, andsimulate activities for "workers" using the DPM plan-ning and simulation infrastructure. Workers performthese activities within the PPRenvironment where theymay walk to a specific loca-tion, move from one targetposture to another, follow-ing the trajectory or path ofan object and pick andplace parts in the workarea.

Users can also establishpart relations to constrainspecific segments of theworker to parts or tools inits environment. Positionconstraints are also storedfrom selected segments toselected 3D objects in theenvironment. Those constraints are subsequentlysolved to update the posture the next time the activityis modified.

Human Solutions can be combined with DELMIA’sDPM Assembly to analyze the relationship betweenworkers and other entities within the simulation. Theycan be simulated and validated using the powerfulprocess simulation capabilities within DPM, allowingthe user to test multiple alternatives for the work

humans must accomplish in a specific manufactur-ing, maintainability and assembly environment.

Human Activity Analysis

Human Activity Analysis allows the user to maximizehuman comfort, safety, and

performance through awide range of advancedergonomics analysis toolsthat comprehensively eval-uate all elements of ahumans interactions with aworkcell. DELMIA’sadvanced human activitytools specifically analyzehow a worker will interactwith objects in the virtualenvironment. Users canaccurately predict humanperformance, ensuring con-formance to factory stan-

dards and maximizing performance. DELMIA Human Activity Analysisincludes a wide range of ergonomics tools for analyz-ing worker performance such as:

• Analyzes lifting, lowering, and carrying tasksusing the NIOSH 81 and 91 equations
