The Next Level of Integration

DELMIA QUEST provides a single collaborativeenvironment for industrial engineers, manufac-turing engineers, and management to developand prove out best manufacturing flow practicesthroughout the production design process.Improve designs, reducerisk and cost, and maxi-mize efficiency digitally, before spending moneyon the actual facility, toget it right the firsttime. By using QUESTto experiment withparameters such asfacility layout, resourceallocation, kaizenpractices, and alternatescheduling scenarios, integrated productteams can quantify theimpact of their deci-sions on productionthroughput and cost.

Powerful Solutions forEvery Discipline

QUEST is a powerful simulation development and analysis tool for validating and visualizing the impact of process flow decisions made formeeting production requirements. Reduce risk by

validating affordability measures, and minimizingproblems and unplanned costs associated withfacility startup. QUEST provides a complete solution, providing the tools necessary for bothefficient process flow analysis and effective presentation of results to customers, managers, and other engineering disciplines.

From Concept toImplementation

QUEST allows you toquickly build a simula-tion model to the levelof detail required, adding more detail asnecessary to improveaccuracy throughout thedesign process.Conceptualize yourprocesses by populatingthe model with intelli-gent objects and pre-

built submodels from yourlibraries. Once your proposal is accepted, carrythe same model into the design process by inte-grating it with existing design tools such as2D/3D CAD, Microsoft spreadsheet and planningsoftware, and other types of simulation applica-tions such as ergonomic workplace assessment.Use the QUEST model to document the lessonslearned through the systems integration process, quantifying the impact of design decisions.

DELMIA QUEST® is a complete 3D digital factory environment for

process flow simulation and analysis, accuracy, and profitability.

QUEST’s flexible, object-based, discrete event simulation environment

combined with powerful visualization and robust import/export capabili-

ties makes it the engineering and management solution of choice for

process flow simulation and analysis.

As your facility springs to life in the digital world, the system’s behavior is emulated withreal processing times, speeds, staffing levels, schedules, failure rates, and timing. This interactive digital environment allows accelerat-ed “what if” analysis to be explored, for evalu-ating production scenarios, product mixes, and other alternatives. Results are efficiently communicated back to the product/processteam for incorporating the best solutions.

Finally, as the facility is built, use QUEST to author an Express model of your proprietaryprocesses and integrate the simulation usingQUEST Express™ with your MES, ERP, MRP,PLC, or scheduling systems for assisting in production floor analysis and systems monitoring. In each stage, analyzing and presenting QUEST results to decision makers is simple and effective.

Reuse Existing Data

Leverage the results produced from your engineering counterparts to dramatically reduceyour data collection and model building time.Simply read in process data from standarddatabases, and use the CAD geometry fromproduct designers to facilitate recognition. Use a distributed modeling approach by communicating real-time via sockets protocolbetween QUEST and any application, such asanother QUEST model, other DELMIA products,

and production monitoring systems.

DELMIA’s integrated solution allows you to automatically link to related simulation analysis, thus reducing the time to build andmodify the model. Read DELMIA recordingsfrom other DELMIA products into QUEST, tospeed up model building and help generate abetter understanding of the processes beingsimulated.

Link and jump to other DELMIA products, maintaining a close association to the actuallocation of data origination. This capability alsoprovides faster feedback and modificationrequirements to other engineers.

Object-based Model-building Means Reusability

QUEST includes a rich resource library of geometric objects that library… enables users to quickly and accurately model a productionfacility, such as buffers, machines, material handling systems, and docks. Save and reuseobjects on multiple levels — elements, classes, groups, submodels, or just logic and geometry.Combine this custom library with the defaultlibraries available in QUEST to efficiently simulate your new facility.

Intelligent Material Handling System Templates

QUEST incorporates real production variables, such as physical lengths, speeds, accelera-tions/decelerations, and plant layout to analyzethe effects on material handling equipment andlabor. For example, QUEST simulations enableparts of different sizes to accurately accumulateon conveyors, and automatically generated oruser-defined labor paths to determine the over-all time spent by operators walking betweenwork stations in a job shop. Use available tem-plates to accurately simulate material move-ment systems such as labor, forklift trucks, con-veyors, power and free systems, automatedguided vehicles (AGVs), cranes, kinematicdevices, and automated storage and retrievalsystems (AS/RS).

Analyze Throughput, ManpowerRequirements, Inventory Levels, Routing Behavior Effects

Use the interactive, true 3D animation and statistical results to allocate resourcesappropriately, allowing you to justify or reducecosts associated with Work In Process (WIP)inventory, labor scheduling, equipment failure, and capacity planning. Display analyticalresults in customizable numerical tables, bargraphs, pie charts, histograms, and time seriesgraphs. Export the data to an external analysis

tool such as a spreadsheet or other charting pack-age. Compare multiple runs graphically andthrough confidence intervals. These analyticaltools assist you in identifying and quantifying theimpact of bottlenecks on your facility, and meas-uring value-added vs. non value-added activitiesfor lean activities.

An OpenArchitecture Approach toModeling

QUEST models directlyemulate real-world sys-tem behaviors throughdistributed logic, used toassociate with eachresource, such as routinglogic, buffering policies,built-in push and pullproduction attributes, and composite processeswith requirement/selec-tion rules. Easily selectthe most commonly needed behavior logic fromcomprehensive logic menus that are parameter-driven for even greater flexibility.

For unique problems, QUEST’s robust and flexiblesimulation language provides distributed process-ing with access to all system variables. This high-level, structured language allows users to define

custom behaviors and gain unlimited control overthe simulation. Users can simply modify anydefault logic since all logic menu selections arewritten in this powerful language, providing anefficient alternative to the tedious task of creatinga “workaround” for near-correct logic. Instead, develop your own library of custom logic, accessi-ble through the menu interface.

CommunicateQuickly to Complete the Task

The 4D simulation accel-erates human recognitionand understanding, allowing the modelbuilder to efficientlycomplete the simulationtask — easily explainingimpacts to those not inti-mate with the model, such as managers, cus-tomers, and other engi-neering disciplines.

Effectively reduce risk byincreasing the level of understanding that thedecision makers possess regarding the impact ofproblems and proposed solutions. With real-timecontrol of the model viewing world, the user canview any potential problem area.

Simulate the Flow of material, transac-tions, or discrete event processes allow-ing users to visualize accurate 3-D repre-sentations of the manufacturing processand associated behaviors over time.

Share results with charts, Modelgraphics and animation in commonfile formats, such as TIFF, JPEG,MPEG, AVI, and VRML 1.0

Search for the Best Solution

Discrete event simulation tools have proveninvaluable for finding optimal solutions. Theirshortcoming, however, has been the trial-and-error aspect to achieving the best results.Simulation’s critical function, determining themerit of different decision alternatives, becomesless effective when a proper analysis requires anoperations research degree to design. DELMIA’sQUEST® Advanced takes a vastly differentapproach: it uses intelligent search techniques toautomate the process of finding the best solution.

With traditional simulation packages, the answersto such questions require a painstaking examina-tion of multiple scenarios, where each scenariofurther requires the implementation of an appro-priate simulation to determine the consequencesfor costs, profits and risks. Missing in traditionalsimulation packages is the ability to disclosewhich decision scenarios are the ones that shouldbe investigated. Also missing is the ability toidentify good scenarios automatically by a searchprocess designed to find the best set of decisions. With traditional simulation packages, searchingfor these answers also typically requires a greatdeal of the user's time and a high level of expert-ise in advanced analysis techniques.

By contrast, QUEST Advanced is designed toincrease the user's productivity by providing aneasy way to conduct analyses without requiringextensive operations research training. QUEST

Advanced enables the decision maker to specify avariety of relationships in order to achieve thebest solution, such as:

• Ranges of key parameters

• Budget limitations

• Machine capacities

• Minimum and maximum lot sizes

• Limits on hours worked

• Links between components or subsystems

Once the parameters have been chosen, QUESTAdvanced automatically determines which deci-sion scenarios are the ones that should be inves-tigated and graphs them, providing visual repre-sentation. The results then can be used to reeval-uate the master QUEST model to ensure thehighest quality outcomes for profits, costs, risks, and other criteria selected by the decision maker.

Take out the Guesswork

QUEST Advanced offers revolutionary methods tofind optimal or near-optimal solutions while onlyevaluating a small fraction of possible alterna-tives. The decision maker does not have to relyon educated guesses to make recommendations.Valuable time does not have to be wastedattempting trial and error solutions. And further, the user does not have to be a programmer ormathematician to determine quality results.
