• The sample represents a wide spread of industries from companies of all sizes in Switzerland. This gives us confidence that our sample can be used as a proxy for the Swiss corporate IT landscape.

…but cost reduction remains a major objectiveEven as IT budgets have risen, cost reduction is the most frequently cited business priority for Swiss CIOs: 54% call it a priority in Switzerland – greater than anywhere else in the world.

IT budgets of Swiss companies have grown significantly over the last two years, with 53% of Swiss CIOs reporting a budget increase – higher than in 2013 and 2014 and higher than the global average for 2015...

CIOs face competing prioritiesThe Swiss CIO faces competing priorities: assisting in cost reduction in addition to playing a key role in delivering innovation and digital technology.

Focus on operations…Swiss CIOs spend a greater amount of their time (37%) on managing IT operations than on any other activity.

…but aspire to strategyTheir current focus may be on operations, but Swiss CIOs prefer to spend more time engaged in strategy development (27% rather than 18% of time currently). 73% of our respondents see their ideal role as a co-leader of business strategy.

Imperfect reporting relationships62% of CIOs want to report directly to the CEO, but only 31% actually do. 4% report to the CFO, but only 5% of CIOs see this as the ideal reporting relationship.

Establishing trusted relationshipsSwiss CIOs establish trusted relationships by being: 1. transparent about what they do 2. good communicators 3. honest and upfront

Three patterns of the CIO:The survey results reveal three patterns of the CIO: Trusted Operators, Change Instigators and Business Co-creators. Most Swiss CIOs today fall into the ‘Trusted Operator’ category. Consistent with the picture of Swiss CIOs as a group being more operationally focused than their international peers.
