ARTIST STATEMENT

I am always amazed at the deftness with which a spider spins a web and the d i l -igence of a b irds nest . These are both examples of the beauty and the evolved engineer ing of Nature. My work honors the marr iage of funct ion and the mys-tery that I see in the natural wor ld, and draws on tradit ional techniques from Japanese and Nat ive America f iber arts , to wicker furnt iure, loom weaving , f ly-ty ing and naut ica l knott ing.

Centra l to a l l of my work is the charactor of the stone. Each stone has a unique presence conveyed by i ts texture, color and shape. The stones speak to me - sometimes I am wait ing for the “r ight ” stone to become the vehic le for an idea, sometimes the “r ight ” stone says ‘here I am.. . .we don’t have anything left to say to each other ’. A l though the tradit ion of basket weaving results in an empty container, I want to engage and poss ib ly chal lenge the v iewers expectat ion of containment. Container or content? The beauty within, or the embrace?
