Board of Directors Meeting
Date: Tuesday, January 10, 2017
Time: 7:30 PM
“B” Building
Delray Villas Plat 4/5 homeowners association
From the President Sy Weiss
From the Editor Linda Solomon
Here we are in 2017 and we have a newly
elected board working to keep everything running
smoothly. Homeowners vote for the board, so please put your
trust in them to do the right thing for the entire community and
take the time to wish our new Board all the best in 2017.
Now that all our residents are back, this is a good time to
remind everyone about our trash pickup schedule. For Wednes-
day pickup all trash and cuttings should be put out on Tuesday
evening at 5 PM. Saturday trash and recycle should go out on
Friday at 5 PM. We have had some unwelcomed guests vis-
iting our trash, so please place all trash in a closed garbage
can. Don’t make it easy for them to get into your trash and
strew it all over the roads. We love our residents’ pets, but we don’t love what they
leave on our lawns. So once again, please pick up after your
pets and those visiting pets. Make sure all pets are kept on a
leash when walked - that is in our Documents. It’s also Palm
Beach County Law. If they catch you with your dog off the
leash, it can cost you $200.00.
The Inspection Committee will be going out the 1st and 2nd
week of the month. Please refer to the items they will be look-
ing for on Page 4, Column 2.
You have been asked before but I would like to remind you
to please not block the sidewalks on Dusenburg and La Salle
Roads because we have many people walking with their aides
on our sidewalks. Here, too, according to Palm Beach County
law you can receive a stiff fine from the Sheriff’s department
for this.
Thanks to all committees for all their hard work throughout
the year. Remember, just like the Board members, committee
members are our own homeowners that volunteer to do this
work.
We have some great things happening in our community
this year. The clubs keep us busy, there are bowlers, billiards
players, card players - so many different activities happening
here, it’s hard to keep up with it all! Make sure you come to
our BOARD MEETINGS on the 2nd Tuesday of each month
and the HOA meetings on the 4th Tuesday in January and
March and have your say in what goes on in our Plat. Don’t
rely on others to make decisions for you. I hope to see every-
one around our community enjoying yourselves in the new
year!

Happy and Healthy New Year, Everyone! Did you make your
New Year’s resolutions yet? I did! I’m not going to share them
with you in case I fall down on the job by next week; but suffice
it to say that they pertain to my health and improving it.
There is one resolution I will share with all of you. How
many of you watched the interview of the First Lady, Michelle
Obama, with Oprah Winfrey? I was always a fan of Mrs.
Obama, but that interview made me realize that of all the first
ladies that have been around in my lifetime, Michelle Obama is
my overall second favorite (the first was Eleanor Roosevelt). I
found our present First Lady to be one of the classiest women
around. She speaks well and is well versed on the issues of
which she must know, she is by all appearances a good mother,
dresses beautifully, and she can dance, too!
However, one thing Mrs. Obama said has resounded with me
and I promised myself that hers was the example I would follow
as best I can from now on. This is what she said: that she and
her husband, President Obama, always tried to place honesty at
the top of their list in everything they did during their time at the
White House. And, more importantly, that she has chosen in her
life to always take the “high road.” I believe her words were,
“When they go low, we go high.” So I have
promised myself that in every endeavor,
every heated conversation, every contro-
versial experience, I will take a deep
breath, visualize how Michelle Obama
would handle the situation and always take
the high road.
On that note, I hope all of your resolutions are formidable
but able to be fulfilled and that your health remain at least as
good as it is now if not better in this new year! But most of all,
ENJOY yourself, it IS later than you think! Linda

SAFETY
by Carol and Dennis Michalic
The heaviest thing you can carry is a grudge.
Almost every day you can read about car burglaries com-
mitted. Some tips to help prevent you from being victimized
are not leaving valuables (purse, wallet, GUNS, computers,
cell phones, backpacks, jewelry, briefcase) in open sight.
Try to hide packages, bags under some type of cover espe-
cially if your trunk area is visible to anyone looking in.
Secure your portable garage door and gate openers (for
those in gated communities).
Park in well lit areas when possible.
Lock your doors, keeping windows closed when pumping
gas or picking up children in public areas.
Do not leave wallets, purses in the car, take them with you
even if parking in your driveway.
NEVER leave a running vehicle unattended.
Thieves do not require a lot of time to enter your car, take
property and leave, most times without you realizing what
happened while you were purposely distracted or not paying
attention.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM
THE BOARD Inspections will be taking place
on January 14, 2027. The follow-
ing are some of the items the com-
mittee will be looking for: rotted
wood fascia; rotted metal beams
holding poles; trees that hang over
the street; bushes and trees that
have limbs too low to the ground and need to be lifted; homes
in need of painting; cleaning and painting of clam shell hurri-
cane shutters; cleaning and staining of driveways where
needed.
The sidewalks can be power washed
for free. However, the maintenance peo-
ple must be able to use your water when
they are doing this work. No powerwash-
ing will be done without a form being
filled out in the recreation parking lot
mailbox.
The speed limit on Dusenburg and La
Salle roads will be reduced to 30 MPH.
Please protect our older folks who don’t
walk with as much surety. And don’t forget
our mailboxes, who take the most abuse!
An Unnecessary Woman
In 2014, Rabih Alameddine’s novel was a finalist for the Na-
tional Book Award.
The Beirut septuagenarian Aaliyah Suleh leads a solitary
life, surrounded by the 37 books that she has translated into
Arabic and placed in boxes in her spare room. They will never
be published because she feels that her Lebanese countrymen
are not interested in literature and reading. She walks her
neighborhoods remembering Beirut as it once was, “the Eliza-
beth Taylor of cities,” as she calls it, “insane beautiful, tacky,
falling apart” before a civil war transformed neighborhoods
into war zones. In her country where social life revolves
around family, she is considered an unnecessary woman, di-
vorced and childless. She is estranged from her family and the
city she lives in, resulting in an internal emigration.“I slipped
into art to escape life,” she tells us.
As she walks the neighborhoods of West Beirut she recalls
past loves and favorite books. It is December and she is con-
templating which book she shall translate during the next
year. She has a ritual where she lights two candles for Walter
Benjamin and then begins her next year’s translation. These
translations will never be read by anyone and form the reason
for her life year after year. At one time many years ago, she
managed a small book store and had a very close friend, Han-
nah. The two people who have touched her in her life are

2017 PLAT 4/5 ELECTION RESULTS The Annual Meeting and Elections were held on December
27, 2016. The Secretary of the Board, cast one vote for the
three candidates who were up for re-election on the Board of
Directors and the one vote for the two members of the Rec

However, 30 additional people were needed to make a

MUSICAL FAREWELL
After 12 years, The Guys & Dolls of Delray Villas Chorus is
disbanding. We are getting older and tired. Our piano player
and musical director for all those years broke her hand and
had to quit. Though it was fun, it is time to call it a day.
I would like to thank our Plat 4/5 singers: Deena Canora,
Jim Canora, Jerry Goldschein, Joe La Corte, Lois Langendorf,
Harvey Lazaroff, Lew Leon, Eleanor Morgan, Sema Mosko-
witz, and our new pianist, Carolyn Youssef. Thank you all for
your years of devotion.
Let me also say thank you to those of you that listened to
us. We hope you enjoyed our performances.
Mel Goldstein, Director
An Unnecessary Woman, (continued from page 4)
Hannah and Ahmed, a young student who helped her in the
store and then abandoned literature for the revolution and is
rumored to be an expert torturer. Her friend Hannah led a
happy but delusional life. Once the “veil” is lifted, she is de-
stroyed.
Aaliyah is the narrator and we see everything from her
point of view, which leads to the novel being digressive and,
at times, didactic. The book is a portrait of an isolated woman
with a dazzling mind who is coming to grips with getting old.
This is a book in which almost nothing happens and that gives
different meaning to the words ‘character’ and ‘plot.’ The
novel overflows with an interior dialogue between Aaliyah
and her literary life. Conversations are largely remembered or
overheard. There are also comical and absurd moments in the
novel such as the time when Aaliyah mistakenly uses too
much blue dye on her hair and now walks around with half
gray and half blue hair. Her head is filled with literary voices
that are illuminating or questioning her motives. Aaliyah rec-
ognizes that “literature gives me life, and life kills me.”
In many ways the novel often feels like a memoir of an
aging septuagenarian woman yet written by a man. Alamed-
dine’s narrative seems written in-resistance to almost all the
current norms of a ‘well-made’ novel. In a review in The
Guardian Claire Messud states, “Simultaneously a philosophi-
cal rumination, a literature class and a cry from the heart, An
Unnecessary Woman is, precisely in its strangeness, a genuine
literary pleasure: a complicated one.”

Talk of the Town by BOB TOWNSEND
ON BEING A COWARD
am a coward.
Nah, I’m not talking about anything physical. I’m
not afraid of anything physical. Hey, I once wrestled
a bear. Oh, that’s right; I mentioned that to you before,
didn’t I? I promised I’d tell you the details of that danger-
ous encounter sometime. Well, I will. Just bear with me.
But, take my word for it; I’m not a
coward when it comes to anything
physical. Hey, I even jumped out of
an airplane.
My cowardice is strictly emo-
tional. It totally surprised me. I
learned about this terrible flaw in my
character after I heard that the cast for productions at the
Delray Beach Playhouse is chosen as a result of open
auditions. I became delirious with excitement the mo-
ment I heard that little bit of news and decided right then
and there that I would throw my hat into the ring (or onto
the stage, whatever the proper terminology may be.) I
don’t mean to brag, but I’m a natural. I am, after all, a
theatrical school dropout.
While at the school, I delivered a stellar performance
as Lieutenant-Commander Philip Francis Queeg in The
Caine Mutiny Court Martial. The performance did
“Bogie” proud. And, after that, I portrayed the embattled
husband, George, in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at
the world famous Greenbriar at Whittingham stage in
New Jersey. I’m not certain how Richard Burton would
have rated that performance, but the audience seemed to
appreciate it.
I examined the lineup of upcoming shows at The
Delray Beach Playhouse and chose a comedy, The Odd
Couple for my tryout rather than a musical because I
really can’t sing. I say this despite the fact that I did my
very best Tennessee Ernie Ford impression at the recent
After 6 Social Club karaoke night. I was convinced that I
sounded more like Tennessee Ernie Ford than Tennessee
Ernie, himself, but many onlookers told me otherwise.
At the Delray Beach Playhouse auditions, you not
only read from the upcoming show, but you’re given the
opportunity to deliver a monologue. I chose an Oscar
Madison monologue from that very show because Ed
Clemon, who lives in Delray Villas West and is some-
what of an expert in such matters, once told me that par-
ticular narration may just be the greatest in the history of
stage or screen. In it, Madison is complaining about his
roommate “leaving little notes” on his pillow. He quotes
one of the notes: “We’re all out of cornflakes, FU.”
And then Madison observes: “It took me three hours to
figure out that FU was Felix Unger.”
I studied the monologue for weeks. But every time I
practiced in front of anyone, I stumbled. Sometimes I
even got the punch line wrong. I guess my memory isn’t
quite what it once was. Don’t get me wrong. My mem-
ory’s still very good. But it’s short.
To audition or not to audition? My hesitancy wasn’t about being afraid to make a
fool out of myself. I’ve already told you about the Ten-
nessee Ernie Ford debacle. I once showed up at After 6
Club Halloween Party (and then at an After 6 Club Thes-
pians show) as Cher to my wife’s, Sonny. I don’t think I
looked much like Cher. I don’t think I even looked quite
human. This past year, I showed up at the costume party
as Colonel Sanders (to my wife’s bucket of chicken).
I’m not going to make any excuses about that one, I
looked more like Colonel Sanders than Colonel Sanders,
himself, and nobody’s going to convince me otherwise.
And my wife, Ronnie, looked finger lickin’ good!
To audition or not to audition?
As the night approached and I
continued to stagger through the
monologue, I debated the issue. But,
I figured, I had nothing to lose. At
the very least, if I auditioned, I’d get
a Ramblings column out of it. But,
supposing I put it all together that
particular night and landed a part? If
I was having such a problem memo-
rizing one little monologue, how was
I going to memorize an entire play?
I’ve been to a couple of Delray
Beach Playhouse performances and
the performers were very good. I wouldn’t want to be
the dude to tarnish their reputation!
I don’t have to tell you that I took the coward’s way
out. I didn’t audition. In fact, auditions are being held at
this very moment while I’m sitting here at home punch-
ing my computer keys. I’m feeling a little depressed, but
a little relieved and I’m still debating if I came to the
right decision. But the whole sequence of deciding to
audition, then preparing to audition, then deliberating
about auditioning and then taking the
coward’s way out and refusing to audi-
tion, wasn’t a total loss. After all is said
and not done; I did get a Ramblings col-
umn out of it, didn’t I?
