Student poster design selected to promote National Child Protection Week 2016

Dubbo College student Shannon Kassell with the poster she designed for national Child Protection Week. Pictured

with Shannon is Delroy Campus art teacher Lorin McConnell and Deputy Principal Kathryn Bermingham.

A poster designed by a Delroy Campus Year 7 student has been selected to promote National Child Protection Week

throughout Australia in the coming weeks.

Keen art student Shannon Kassell decided to take part in the competition and for her efforts received a $200 Big W gift

voucher and a trip to Sydney to meet the Governor General.

Dubbo College Delroy Campus also received $200 for the art department as a result of Shannon’s work.

The competition was coordinated by NAPCAN, the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.

Each year NAPCAN organises activities throughout the country to mark National Child Protection Week, this year from

September 4 to 10.

Delroy Deputy Principal Miss Kathryn Bermingham and the school’s NAPCAN contact Ms Madelene McGrath, alerted the

art faculty about the poster competition and art teacher Mrs Lorin McConnell encouraged Shannon to design an entry.

Shannon said she was very happy to hear news of her win and was looking forward to travelling to Sydney with her mother

on September 2.

“We will fly to Sydney and back and I will have the opportunity to meet the Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove,” she

said.

“I will explain my poster idea in a special video, which will also cover the production of the poster. My poster focuses on

the importance of community in keeping children safe from harm. NAPCAN will print 7,500 posters and these will go to a

broad range of communities throughout the country.”

Mrs McConnell said Shannon was a dedicated student who often spent her breaks in the art room.

“It’s great to see Shannon rewarded for her work because she puts in a big effort, is often first to finish and then helps other

students,” she said.

“The win couldn’t have gone to a more deserving student.”

Copies of Shannon’s poster are available on the NAPCAN website at

www.napcan.org.au/resource-hub/napcan-child-protection-week-posters/

A story about Shannon and her poster was also posted on the NAPCAN Facebook page and reached more than 3000 people:

Visual Arts: Year 7 - The students have had their photographs taken and began tracing their photo onto A3 paper to begin their Del

Kathryn Barton inspired portrait piece for assessment. From here, students will begin with the background to their portrait

either using acrylic or watercolour paint. Students will then apply flora and fauna to the background which is relevant to

them (pets or flowers/plants they like) and finally, the students will incorporate pattern and repetition as a final layer.

Year 8 – The students have completed 3 separate designs based on organic, natural shapes or flora and fauna. They chose

one favourite from the designs and transferred it onto their Lino square. The teacher has given a demonstration on how to use

the lino cutting tools and rules the students are to follow when using these tools. The students are now at the stage where

they are cutting their lino squares and will be printing their designs.

Photography – The students are now investigating portraiture and the different techniques of lighting. The school has

professional lights with which the students will be experimenting to create a small series of portraits.

Below are examples of student works from last term where they were required to appropriate an artist using Adobe

Photoshop to build on their Photoshop skills.

DELROY CAMPUS NEWSLETTER Wednesday 31st August 2016 8

Wellbeing for our Students Marathon Health recently conducted free Hearing tests at Delroy Campus. Year 7 students

were targeted, however several students from other years took advantage of this opportunity.

There will be another opportunity for these tests when Marathon Health return in term 4, so

watch out for the confirmation dates in this newsletter or on our website and ask your child

to listen for daily notices so they can collect a permission note if you wish them to partici-

pate.

The Dubbo and District Deaf Club have also provided a “Hearing Loss Parent Checklist”

which can be obtained from Mrs Budden if you feel that your child may be experiencing

some hearing issues.

The Spine Society of Australia has provided the school with information regarding the National Self

Detection Program for Scoliosis (Spinal curvature). Past ‘in school screening’ no longer exists so they

recommend girls in Years 7 and 9 participate by downloading a brochure found at:

www.scoliosis-australia.org and follow the information to complete a self - assessment.

It is interesting to note that 25 per thousand are at risk of developing a significant curve and three girls

per thousand require active treatment.

The Learning and Support teachers have been working with the Senior Campus staff to

organise Transition activities for our Year 10 students as they move to Senior studies in

2017.

We have also begun working with our Primary feeder schools to provide Transition opportu-

nities for their Year 6 students as they move to Year 7 in 2017.

WESTERN CHS GYMNASTICS

On 2nd, 3rd and 4th August 2016, Glendale (Hunter region) hosted the CHS Gymnastics. The level of gymnastics was

exceptional, with gymnasts ranging from Level 3 through to Level 10.

It was the first year Western has entered a team, and the gymnasts represented the region with pride. The gymnasts all

performed at a high standard, many coming away with personal best apparatus scores. This is exceptional, as many of the

judges judge at International Competitions. The gymnasts were also competing against other gymnasts who train up to

40 hours a week.

The gymnasts were divided into divisions according to their level.

Division A – level 9 and 10

Division B – level 7 and 8

Division C – level 6

Division D – level 4 and 5

Division E – level 3

Overall results are as follows

Division D

3 days.

It was a great experience for myself as a Western Manager, but also for all gymnasts to showcase their talents and to

experience the high level of competition that was displayed. We look forward to 2017, where Western can take a team of

exceptional gymnasts once again to the State CHS Carnival.

DELROY CAMPUS NEWSLETTER Wednesday 31st August 2016 12

Ross Kelly Cup On Tuesday of week 5, 18 Clontarf boys and 3 staff headed

off to Sydney to take part in the annual Ross Kelly Cup.

This is the biggest football carnival in the Clontarf Calendar

and Delroy had a reputation to uphold after making it to the

grand final in 2015.

We headed to the Royal Far West at Manly and the older boys went on the Ferry with Michael to have dinner at the Royal

Automobile Club and meet Clontarf partners as well as some former and current NRL stars. The younger boys stayed in

Manly with Drew and Mark and went out for dinner there.

The Royal Automobile Club was very fancy and dinner was lovely. We met lots of partners and Joel Thompson who plays

for the St George Dragons. Joel spoke to the boys about his background and some of the struggles he has been through to

get to where he is. The younger boys had “the best burgers in the world” and were tucked up in bed by the time we got

home!

We were up at dawn on Wednesday so that we got to Riverview on time to start warming up at 7:30am. The boys were very

disciplined and organised and we had no trouble getting underway and being on time. We were a bit rough in our first game

and got beaten by one try by Canobolas. We started to get it together though and won all our other pool games to end up on

a tie with Canobolas on the ladder. We played them again in a Golden Point Elimination game and beat them with a beauti-

ful short ball from Randel Dowling to Paul Eastwood!

We were then beaten by Endeavour in the Semi

Final. The boys played their hearts out and the staff

were incredibly proud of both their performance and

their behaviour. Aiden Lake and Randel Dowling

both made it into the Ross Kelly Cup All Stars

Team and Paul Eastwood won the Clontarf Spirit

Medal.

After a number of pretty hard-fought games, the

boys were pretty worn out. We went out to dinner

that night and had an early night. On Thursday

morning the boys got up and we went to the beach

for a recovery session and then after a bit of shop-

ping we headed home to Dubbo. We had maintained

our reputation for good footballers and built a more

important one as a well disciplined and well be-

haved Academy.

DELROY CAMPUS NEWSLETTER Wednesday 31st August 2016 13

SRC Report Newsletter Our entire world knows that if we want significant change, then we need to have a strong voice to influence growth and

development. Student voice within the school community is imperative, between staff, students and the public. The strength

of student voice within Delroy Campus would impact prominently on the culture of our school. The Delroy Campus

Representative Council strives to enhance the involvement of students in school events, and raise the awareness of the

importance of their voice in our school. As a team, we aim to achieve this by running lessons implemented into PBL, where

the students will be asked to discuss relative issues within the school, which will be forwarded to the Representative

Council. We will then resolve these issues by responding to their feedback accordingly and making changes throughout the

school. This will effectively promote student wellbeing and the voice of students in our school which will efficiently

encourage growth and development. These lessons will begin in term 4 of this year.

Selected students from our SRC went to a Leadership camp “You’re the Voice” hosted in Murrumbateman, near Canberra,

to better our skills as a council and to become more productive. After this camp, we then came up with a ‘BIG IDEA’. The

two components of this big idea are:

To raise the awareness and importance of student voice

To improve the position of the SRC within the school community

By achieving this, we will become stronger as a council and be a more suitable and productive team to represent Delroy

Campus.

We have recently created a Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat page for the SRC to post any upcoming events, and also as

another method for you to contact us. These pages are run by the student and we encourage you to follow or add these

accounts.

As a part of our ‘BIG IDEA’ we have also considered inviting staff and students into our weekly meetings to have their say

in our decision making and see what we get up to as a Student Representative Council. This will help the growth of student

voice.

The Partners in Learning

parent feedback survey

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners

in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them

From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent

surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents

and carers questions about different factors that are known

to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand

parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s

experience at school. These include: communication

between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at

home and parent/carer views on the school's support of

learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help

our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on

public computers. The survey will typically take 15

minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential.

The parent survey will be conducted between 22 August

and 21 October. Participating in the survey is entirely

voluntary, however, your responses are very much

appreciated.

You are warmly invited to complete the survey and provide

your valuable feedback.

If you would like to complete the survey please go to

https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/delroyparent1234

Alternatively, an opportunity to complete the survey will

be given to parents and carers at the upcoming parent/

teacher evening on Wednesday 14th September 2016.

More information about the survey is available at:
