Downtown DeltaFestDowntown DeltaFest — the first of three

scheduled this summer — takes place Thurs-day, June 9, from 5:30 until sundown. The Delta Area Chamber of Commerce is plan-ning three full blocks of fun that includes music by North Fork Country, dancing, kids’ activities, food, vendors and dirt bike racing. Grand Mesa Motorsports presents Moto Mayhem in the 500 block of Main Street. Classic cars will be on display in the 200 block. In additon, many Main Street shops will offer extended hours.

Main Street will be closed to through traffic, but cross traffic will be allowed on 2nd and 6th streets.

Fatal accident reportedA fatal traffic accident occurred Sunday,

June 5, on Highway 65 north of Cedaredge. At about 6:47 a.m., a 1996 GMC Yukon was southbound near milepost 22 when the driver lost control after traveling over an area of the roadway covered with loose gravel. The Colorado State Patrol reports the GMC traveled off the right shoulder of the roadway and rolled down a steep rocky embankment, coming to final rest approximately 120’ from the roadway on its top. The driver fled the scene and is yet to be located. Leonardo Grajeda Salazar, 49 of Montrose, was found deceased in the passenger seat.

The beleaguered population of coal miners in the North Fork Valley and their families received more bad news last Thursday when Arch Coal announced another round of layoffs.

The West Elk Mine near Somerset reduced its work-force by 80 employees. West Elk is the latest Delta County mine to severely restructure after Oxbow Mining’s Elk Creek Mine closed and the Bowie No. 2 Mine was idled.

All told, over the course of three years, the population of coal miners in Delta County has gone from over 1,200 to some 300 now.

In a statement provided to the DCI, Arch Coal leadership indicated the weak worldwide

market for coal made the lay-offs inevitable.

“We want to thank the employees for their hard work, significant contributions and years of faithful service to West Elk,” said Jim Miller, general manager of West Elk mine. “We regret the need for this difficult action and the result-ing impacts on our employees, their families and the North Fork community. We greatly appreciate the strong support we have received and we con-tinue to pursue markets for West Elk’s high-quality, low-emitting product.”

Crawford resident Chris Johnson, 57, wasn’t surprised when he received notice of his layoff Thursday night at the start of his graveyard shift. He said workers, who were paid for the shift, were escort-

ed to their lockers to pick up their personal belongings.

A 10-year employee at West Elk, he worked on the sur-face the last seven years. Six weeks ago he was sent back underground and was one of several workers to be shuf-fled around. He said he was actually expecting to be laid off during the first quarter, but a contractor had been let go, and he was among a few workers to get a couple more months of employment.

Johnson’s dad and grand-dad worked in the mines for

U.S. Steel in Somerset, so this isn’t new to him.

“It did not come as a sur-prise, at least to me,” Johnson said. “We knew the market was not good and that con-tracts weren’t coming.”

Johnson said he took the job 10 years ago because he had six kids in school and needed a steady job with good benefits.

“It provided that,” he said. Johnson was actually think-ing about quitting in the com-ing year. “At 57, it was becom-ing a hard job.”

Getting laid off allows him to collect benefits while he fig-ures out what to do next.

While he’s positive about the future and is working on business plans with his son, he’s concerned for some of his former co-workers, and espe-cially the ones with families. “They have to scramble,” he said. “It’s harder for them.”

His faith makes it easier to look to the future. “I continue to have faith in the Lord and trust in God,” said Johnson. “When God closes a door, He opens a window.”

Linda Sorenson, chairman of the Delta County Republi-can Party, has responded to the furor caused by a Face-book meme of Ronald Reagan bottlefeeding a chimpanzee. The caption, “I’ll be damned ... Reagan used to babysit Obama!” spurred outcries of racism that spread rapidly across the entire nation.

After the meme appeared on her personal Facebook page, Sorenson was contact-ed by Internet blogger Jason Salzman. She responded with the comment, “I really don’t care if people are offended by it. Unfriend me. Stop look-ing at me on Facebook.” The interview can be found on his website at bigmedia.org.

In a followup article in the Grand Junction Daily Sen-tinel, Delta County Republi-can officials claimed Soren-son’s Facebook page had been “hacked,” despite her state-ment to Salzman.

The furor resulted in a closed-door meeting with local committee members

and Steve House, state GOP chairman, Monday morning in Delta. As a result of that meeting, Sorenson issued the following statement, printed in its entirety:

“It appears that someone that I don’t know tagged me in a Facebook post with a silly comparison to Barack Obama. I confess to ‘liking’ a tired old Internet meme, and I apologize for my bad judgment. When confronted on the spot by a liberal blog-ger, I was busy and didn’t realize the game that was being played — the ‘gotcha’ game. The ‘gotcha’ game is fun only for those who intend to ruin a person’s name, repu-tation, and position of leader-ship. For anyone else who has been through the cycle, they can tell you how ridiculous and nasty the game is. From one moment to the next, I’m national news. The vitriol and hatred that has been direct-ed at me has been nothing short of stunning. But anyone paying attention these days knows that the left is only about tolerance when they’re

demanding that YOU toler-ate their latest nutty idea, and if you don’t like it, then you’re automatically a ‘hater,’ a ‘bigot’ and a ‘racist.’

“I admit saying to the blog-ger that ‘I don’t care if you’re offended,’ however I do care very much if anyone else was offended. Please forgive me for being insensitive and not thinking of others in the heat of the moment.

“I believe one of the great-est things about America is that we are to be judged on the content of our character not the color of our skin.”

Questions have also been raised about Sorenson’s alleged endorsement of U.S. Senate candidate Darryl Glenn, in violation of party rules, but reportedly the Mon-day morning meeting with House and local GOP leaders was focused primarily on the Facebook meme.

The regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Delta County Republican Party was held Tuesday night, after this issue of the DCI had gone to press.

Linda Sorenson confesses to exercising ‘bad judgment’


A two-mile stretch of the Gunnison River between Con-fluence and Cottonwood parks has been the subject of a study intended to spur economic development in the Delta area. Community members are invited to preview a con-ceptual draft of the study and to provide feedback Thursday, June 9, at Bill Heddles Recre-ation Center. Representatives of RiverRestoration Inc., the firm which prepared the draft, will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. to provide details and hear what community mem-bers have to say.

The preliminary engineer-ing study was funded by a $100,000 DOLA grant, and

is part of a broader economic recovery plan taking shape across Delta County.

Better City, a consultant employed by the City of Delta, Delta County Economic Devel-opment and Region 10, identi-fied the city’s inactive river-front as a “significant oppor-tunity to develop recreational assets that will reposition the community as a destination attraction and community of choice for employers and their associated workforce.”

It’s believed the riverfront property at the entrance to Delta has potential as a “gate-way project” that could attract private investment, including a nationally branded hotel.

The draft plan addresses river amenities including

trails, camping, scenic over-looks, green space, access points and recreational oppor-tunities.

There’s also an opportunity to capitalize on five small lakes within the project area that could accommodate waterski-ing, wakeboarding, boating, sailing, personal watercraft and beach activities.

Fishing areas, picnic and playground areas, interpre-tive stations, and boardwalks across wetland areas are other elements that could be incor-porated into a long-range plan to revitalize both the north and south sides of the river corridor.

Ballots for the June 28 primary election have been mailed to registered Demo-crat and Republican voters in Delta County. Unaffiliated voters may participate by affil-iating with one of the major parties any time prior to Elec-tion Day. Details are avail-able at the county clerk and recorder’s office in the county courthouse or the North Fork Annex in Hotchkiss.

The primary election will be

conducted by mail, although votes can be cast in person at the county clerk’s office in either Delta or Hotchkiss. A 24-hour ballot drop box is also available at both locations.

Stay away from globe willow treesDear Editor:

Warning: This is the kind of letter I wish I’d seen back when my hus-band I were looking for a retirement home in Delta County in the 1980s, because maybe we would

have been aware that some trees that grow in this area should be avoid-ed. If they are not, there can be many regrets.

Sure, we wanted some trees for the shade they could bring. But what we weren’t aware of is how out of control some of those trees were. They never should be planted on city-size lots, because if they are they can cause a homeowner lots of regrets.

Yes, I’m talking about globe willow trees, which are okay out in a farm-er’s fields where maybe cows or horses might enjoy them. But hanging over your house they are downright dangerous, as someone I know found out when the branches of one that was near his house collapsed on his roof and smashed a huge hole in it that was expen-sive to repair.

My husband was alive and healthy when we bought our house. The trees in the yard weren’t a big problem, but he has been gone for 18 years and now I’m a severely disabled widow and have a disabled son living with me. We can’t cut trees or afford the thousands

of dollars it would cost to hire somebody to do it because its trunk is about 20 feet around and the branches are about 50 feet up in the air. So what to do about it, I don’t know. (And it is not the only globe willow I have on my property.)

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the tree’s habits, let me tell you about them. They have seasons when they produce things, like the sticks that fall when the wind blows — and it blows a lot around here in the springtime. Then come the seeds that coat sidewalks and con-crete driveways. They’re tracked into houses and seem to eat into the con-crete. Then comes the fall and an unbelievable num-ber of long, skinny leaves come raining down. They clog rain gutters and downspouts and turn to muck that is difficult to get out.

So save yourself unneeded problems and stay away from those trees. If you don’t, you might break yur neck climbing ladders trying to deal with them.

Don’t waste money covering ditchDear Editor:

I have just found out that a screwball proposal has been made by Paonia trustee Dave Bradford to cover the park ditch with a sidewalk.

In my opinion this project would be a total misuse of the sidewalk funds especially when there is a sidewalk right-of-way on the south side of the street. That side-walk, already in place, is continuous from Delta

Avenue to Grand Ave-nue. A sidewalk at the park would begin and end there because sev-eral properties on the north side of 4th Street are adjacent to the gut-ter. Getting right-of-way from these properties would be an arduous and expensive, if not impos-sible, process.

Children play in the ditch water during the hot summer months. Dogs drink from the

ditch during park events like the Mountain Har-vest Festival and Cherry Days. Historically the open ditch has been a source of enjoyment for families for at least 100 years and covering it would go against the wishes of many of us who want the ditch to remain as it is — open.

To cover the ditch is a total waste of money. The money should go toward fixing the sidewalk on the other side of the street from the park; the money definitely should not fund a sidewalk that goes nowhere.

Those who use Paonia Town Park and who think that covering the ditch is a misuse of the sidewalk fund should call the town: 527-4101.

We think it is inter-esting that Delta County GOP chairperson Linda Sorenson is being criti-cized by the NAACP for racial bias against Barack Obama, yet not one peep was made by the NAACP when the left made unprintable racial slurs against the Bush administration’s secre-tary of state, Condoleeza Rice, who is black. It is also ironic that Linda Sorenson is supporting a black man, Daryl Glenn, for the U.S. Senate. Noth-ing said by the NAACP about that either.

Olen Lund has proven leadership, experienceDear Editor:

I am urging you to vote for Olen Lund, who is running for re-election for the District 3 DMEA board seat. I’ve known Olen since he was in mid-dle school. He is a man of integrity and charac-ter. I’ve known him to always support farming and ranching, mining, and other wise use of our natural resources.

Olen has the proven leadership and experi-ence that DMEA and its members need. In his first three years he helped keep the cost of our electricity down. He went to Washington, D.C., to help get the Fed-eral Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rul-

ing which will enable us to buy more locally generated power. He was successful in getting the local micro hydro permit-ted by the state. He also worked with the farmers of Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association on their hydro projects. In addition, he has used his influence to help bring broadband to our community. By spending countless hours research-ing, attending meetings, and visiting other co-ops, he was able to help put a plan into action that is projected to cost about a third of the original estimate (this will save our co-op members about $60 million). The DMEA board’s plan has a phased

approach so that it does not jeopardize the stabil-ity of our electric co-op. Their plan also means that the owner members’ electric bills will not go up because of this project, and is projected to turn a profit within nine years. This will help keep the cost of co-op members’ electricity down.

Olen is committed to keeping safe, reliable electricity at the lowest cost his main goal! I know he will continue to use his commonsense approach if given the opportunity to serve another term. So, I urge you to please vote for Olen Lund.

When I vote for a Delta Coun-ty commissioner, and I will vote, I will vote for the candidate that best meets my expectations. I expect my candidate to be honest, to be fair, and to represent my values. I expect my candidate to have integrity. I expect him to know, understand, and follow without ques-tion the Constitution, the Declaration of Inde-pendence, and the Bill of Rights. I demand that he will live by and follow the 10 Commandments.

But most importantly, my candidate must be fearless in his beliefs; that he will not succumb to political correctness imposed by others, and he will fight tirelessly for what is right without compromise.

Based on my evalua-tion, the one candidate that will get my vote is Roger Bentley. I believe he is a fighter, not an appeaser, and that he will fight for what is right, not for what others demand. I don’t expect him to do what I ask him to do: I expect him to know what is RIGHT and do what is RIGHT.

A feral cat found on Hanson Road near Cedaredge tested positive for plague over the Memo-rial Day weekend. This is the first plague activity detected in Delta Coun-ty this season. The sick cat was taken to Surface Creek Veterinary Center where it was tested for plague and then eutha-nized. Contact the Delta County Health Depart-ment, 874-2165, if you find dead rabbits, squir-rels, or prairie dogs in this area.

“Plague is commonly transmitted by fleas, so taking steps to avoid fleas will help prevent spread of the disease,” said Ken Nordstrom, Delta County Health Department envi-ronmental health direc-tor.

Public health officials

recommend the follow-ing steps to reduce being exposed to plague:

• Avoid fleas. Protect pets with flea control products and keep them on a leash and out of wild rodent habitats.

• Stay out of areas with wild rodents. If you must enter areas with wild rodents, wear insect repellent. You may also tuck pants cuffs into socks to prevent flea bites.

• Avoid all contact with wild rodents, including squirrels and chipmunks.

• Do not touch sick or dead animals.

• Prevent rodents liv-ing around your house:

clear plants and materi-als away from outside walls, prevent access to pet food and trash, and set traps.

Cats and dogs that roam and hunt can carry infected fleas home to their owners. In rare instances pets that con-tract plague can transmit the disease to people.

“Keeping pets from roaming and hunting, and using flea control on them is the best way to protect them from getting plague,” said Nordstrom.

Plague is an infec-tious disease that occurs naturally in Colorado. It is spread by flea bites

among small wild mam-mals such as squirrels, woodrats, chipmunks, ground squirrels, prairie dogs and rabbits. Bubonic plague is the most com-mon form of plague and occurs after a bite from an infected flea. Plague can be spread to humans when infected fleas bite a human.

Symptoms of plague include a sudden, high fever, extreme fatigue, and sometimes but not always painful swol-len lymph nodes (called buboes). About half of the people infected with plague will also have gas-trointestinal symptoms

such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and/or abdomi-nal pain. Anyone who observes these symptoms in a person or pet should contact their health care

provider or veterinarian immediately. Plague can be treated with common antibiotics, and treat-ment is most successful when begun early.

Water managers for the Gunnison Basin are saying that with predicted inflows to Blue Mesa of 525,000 to 580,000 acre feet, this year’s water yield is classified as an “average dry” year.

Information on the current state of the Gunnison Basin water supplies was provided by state and federal officials at the annual Gunnison Basin State of the River report in Montrose on Monday.

With adequate inflows to Blue Mesa, neither it nor Morrow Point are expected to spill this year, said Erik Knight, hydrologist for the Bureau of Reclamation.

Knight reported that a projected peak 10-day flow on the Lower Gunnison River of 8,070 cubic feet per second actually reached

8,500 cfs during mid May. The peak flow day on the Lower Gunnison was 9,900 cfs on May 17.

While it looks likely that Paonia Reservoir may fill to almost full, runoff in the North Fork of the Gunnison River will be affected by some meager snowpack readings, he said.

Division 4 Water Engineer Bob Hurford noted that the cool spring this year has produced a slow and steady runoff supply. Warm weather is now providing increased runoff as the high country snowpack in the basin begins to melt.

Another report given at the meeting indicates that Ridgway Reservoir is “filling quickly at the moment.” Weather patterns will affect that process. The goal at this point is to not spill Ridgway.

There was a report on the “use it or lose it” doctrine in water law and the great amount of misunderstanding that surrounds it (see related story on page C5), and discussion of the recently completed Colorado Water Plan and how funding its $20 billion in total proposed water projects might be accomplished.

State of the rivers reported for the Gunnison Basin

The City of Delta is alerting citizens about a capital improvement project that involves the alleys between Main and Meeker streets from 2nd to 5th, and between Main and Palmer from 2nd to 5th.

The project will begin in the alley between Main and Meeker from 5th to 4th and progress one alley at a time north until 2nd Street, then cross over to the west side of Main Street and continue from south to north.

The alleys that will be impacted by the con-struction are where the city recently completed installation of the storm water project. Construc-tion includes a center concrete gutter pan to

carry water to the newly constructed storm sewer and asphalt pavement. During construction, detours will be in place to route pedestrians and traffic around impacted areas and trash pickups will be adjusted accord-ingly. Delivery schedules and parking access will need to be coordinated with the contractor as they work in each area/block.

During the entirety of construction, the impact-ed streets will be main-tained in gravel until paving can commence at the end of the project. Questions or concerns about this project may be directed to city staff at 874-7566 ext. 216 or to the contractor at 874-3134.

Paige Bowling, a 2013 Delta High School gradu-ate, is running for the title of Miss Colorado America June 9-11. Bowling is a junior at Colorado School of Mines pursuing degrees in chemical and bio-chemical engineering and another in biochemistry. She will graduate in May 2017 and plans to continue her education to receive a PhD. Her goal is to work in research for a pharma-

ceutical company toward a cure for Alzheimer’s.

Every young woman in the competition for the title of Miss America must select a platform to run under. Bowling has cho-sen to support women in science and engineering. She said, “There is a very common stigma about women who choose to fol-low a career path in any-

thing science or engineer-ing related which perpetu-ates gender inequalities. If you ask a young girl what she wants to be when she grows up, over time many girls will shift their focus from grand career paths to something based upon gender-normative stereo-types. My ultimate goal is to not only promote young girls to continue on a path focused on math and sci-ence, but to also promote education to everyone. To do this I hope to expand the current science and engineering resources available to schools for everyone, but especially young girls.”

This year Bowling was co-advisor for a new program at Delta High School titled “WiSE.” At a school of a little over 600 students, the pro-gram was a success with over 40 girls involved the first year. Two mentor-ship programs were set up, one for the girls with a woman in an industry in their field of interest and one for the girls in high school with a young-er girl from two different local elementary schools.

Blazing a trailSince 1963 May has been nationally recognized as Older Americans Month. This year’s theme, “Blaze a Trail” highlighted the ways older adults are reinventing themselves through new work, new passions, engaging their com-munities, and blazing a trail of positive impact on the lives of people of all ages. Cross-roads held a writing contest encouraging older Americans to write a short story about how they are blazing trails in their communities. Four submissions were received, each telling a unique and amazing story. The stories came from Nina Den Beste, Mary-Jo St. Jean, Anna Marie Suppes and Miriam Hartig (not pictured) with Anna Marie winning the competition.

Elks have always been moved by the flag of the United States of America, which is why, in 1907, Elks members adopted a resolution designating June 14 as Flag Day. In 1911 the Grand Lodge mandated that all local lodges observe Flag Day with appropriate ceremo-nies, making the Elks the first national fraternal organization to require the observance of Flag Day.

On Aug. 3, 1949, Presi-dent Harry S. Truman, himself a member of the Elks, permanently des-ignated June 14 as Flag

Day by signing an act of Congress. Delta Elks Lodge #1235 held its first annual public Flag Day service on June 14, 1940, with approximately 500 people in attendance. Delta Elks Lodge has continued this tradition each year since.

On Saturday, June 11, at 11 a.m., the Delta Elks Lodge #1235 will pres-ent its 76th annual Flag Day ceremony to the gen-eral public. Come experi-ence the history of our nation’s flag and see rep-licas of the American flag as it has changed over the years, accompanied by patriotic music. Delta Emblem Club and Delta High School’s JROTC will be assisting.

After the Flag Day ceremony there will be a short flag retirement ceremony followed by

2010 Ford Explorer was reported from an address on Sunridge Drive, Delta. A warrant has been issued for a former room-mate, Julian “Dusty” Stafford, for aggravated motor vehicle theft.

The owner of a fish-ery outside of Hotchkiss found two males tres-passing and fishing from his pond. The two juve-niles were charged with possession of alcohol by underage persons after the fishery owner also provided photos of beer bottles left behind.

Deputies responded to the emergency room at Delta County Memo-rial Hospital, where they took a report of a rollover involving a side-by-side off-road vehicle. The acci-dent occurred on Min-nesota Creek Road near Paonia. No citations were issued.May 30:

Deputies responded to a call of trespassers on Old Wagon Road near Delta. No suspects could be located.

The sheriff ’s office was contacted after a ver-bal argument between neighbors at a homeown-ers’ meeting outside of Hotchkiss. No criminal activity occurred.

A complaint was received from a resident on H Road about a neigh-bor boy driving a four-wheeler onto his property and doing doughnuts.May 31:

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersec-tion of Bone Mesa and Back River roads around 6 p.m. Paonia fire-

fighters and the North Fork ambulance also responded to the scene. Wendi Wilkerson, 43, of Crawford, possibly drift-ed into an oncoming lane and struck a car driven by Mariah Adams. Both were injured but not seri-ously. The Colorado State Patrol is handling the investigation.June 2:

A Crawford resident reported his tires had been slashed. He iden-tified a suspect for the deputies.

A two-vehicle accident occurred near 9276 High-way 65, Austin. One vehi-cle was driven by Fletch-er Kehmeier, the other by Jennifer Chlarson. There were no injuries. The Col-orado State Patrol is han-dling the investigation.June 3:

A fire was reported at 22200 Canal Street, Austin, at approximately 5:45 p.m. John Kuem-merlin was reportedly burning weeds when the fire spread to a home-made trailer used as a storage shed.

A single-vehicle acci-dent occurred at 25 Mesa and 1200 Road, Delta, at about 9 p.m. The vehicle was driven by Ezra Guti-errez. A passenger was transported to the hos-pital by ambulance. The CSP is investigating.June 5:

A garage and out-building at 33203 J80

Road, Hotchkiss, were destroyed by a fire that was reported at about 1 a.m. The Hotchkiss Fire District responded. The fire started in the garage and spread to a shed in which a tractor was stored. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread to two nearby homes. No one was injured.

A fatal accident occurred near mile post 22, Highway 65, at about 6:30 a.m. A pass-ing motorist reported the crash after he was flagged down by a His-panic male. A second male was found inside the maroon 1996 GMC Yukon. He was unrespon-sive. The driver did not return to the scene, but may be a relative of the deceased individual. The Colorado State Patrol is investigating.June 6:

Deputies responded to Delta County Memorial Hospital where Joseph Caldwell, the owner of the garage/outbuilding that burned on J80 Road, was being treated for a dog bite. He was bitten when he tried to break up a fight between his dog and a sheepdog, owner unknown. Deputies are attempting to locate the sheepdog’s owner.

At its annual meet-ing of members on June 16, Delta-Montrose Elec-tric Association (DMEA) will introduce Elevate Fiber and demonstrate the fastest Internet ser-vice on the market. Ele-vate Fiber, powered by DMEA, is the co-op’s new fiber broadband company that was recently estab-lished to bring fast, reli-able, and quality Inter-net service to members in Montrose and Delta counties.

At the meeting, DMEA will provide demonstra-tions of video streaming as well as file downloads and uploads on 1,000 Mbps (1Gig) Internet service. Members locat-ed within Elevate’s first phase will have the abil-ity to pre-sign up for service and select from a variety of speeds and

packages.“This year’s annual

meeting is so much more than a traditional busi-ness meeting. It is truly a celebration of a new era for DMEA and the coop-erative business model. We’re no longer talking about bringing electricity to the far reaches of the county, but rather a new necessity — high-speed Internet. DMEA’s service will be the fastest avail-able in the country,” said Jasen Bronec, DMEA CEO.

The annual meeting is scheduled for June 16 at the Montrose County Fairgrounds Friendship Hall. Doors open for reg-istration at 4:30 p,m. It will include a free grilled dinner, activities for chil-dren, an auto display, bucket truck ride and a performance by Jen-

eve Rose Mitchell. Jen-eve is a 16-year-old from Crawford who competed in the most recent season of American Idol, where she advanced to become one of the top 14 con-testants. Registered members will receive a complimentary 10” cast iron skillet. The event is free to the public and no RSVP is necessary.

The meeting will also conclude DMEA’s 2016 board of directors elec-tion. The District 3, Dis-trict 4, and the South Region positions are up for election. The candi-dates in random order are: Olen Lund and Brad Harding, District 3; Wal-

A great day to be outsideA fishing derby hosted by Gunnison Gorge Anglers kicked off Outdoor Heritage Day in Confluence Park last Saturday. Winners of the fishing derby were Charlie Hellman, who placed first for the most fish caught. He reeled in three fish totaling 35 3/4” in length. Second place went to Levi Cole and third to Alexis Kirkman. Alex Kuta won an award for catching the smallest fish. After the fishing derby, participants had an opportunity to try rafting, archery, mountain biking, target shooting and other activities provided by 18 partners of the City of Delta. “I would like to recognize all the sponsors and exhibitors for making this event a huge success,” said organizer Renee Ealey, City of Delta. She said about 1,000 participants of all ages enjoyed the June 4 event. “It was very exciting to see happy faces, in spite of the heat! A huge thank you to Kiwanis for barbecuing and providing all the food and beverages.”

A self-guided tour of five private gardens, plus the Montrose Botanic Gardens, will be held Saturday, June 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This is a chance to explore five private gar-dens plus the Montrose Botanic Gardens and see smaller scale town gar-dens as well as larger estate landscapes.

The ambiance of walk-ing through the gardens will be enhanced by musicians, plein air art-ists and expert gardeners who will be available to offer gardening wisdom. Refreshments will be offered during the tour. The gardens each have a unique flair within their picturesque landscapes and themes — “Xeriscape Wonder,” “Charming In-towner,” “Flowering Acres,” “Restful Enter-tainer” and “Quaint and Quiet.”

The garden tour bene-fits the Montrose Botanic Gardens which is a liv-ing demonstration gar-den that is administered and maintained by the Montrose Botanical Soci-ety. Tickets are $15, or $10 for anyone who is a member or becomes a member of the Montrose Botanic Gardens. Tickets can be purchased before

the day of the tour at the Montrose Pavilion and at Around the Corner Art Gallery. The day of the tour, tickets and maps will be sold at the Montrose Botanic Gardens, next to the Montrose Pavilion, where the garden tour will begin.

Through the volunteer efforts of the botanical society, the Montrose Botanic Gardens continue to grow. The newest proj-ect is the building of the Valley Garden, a space perfect for presentations, live music and intimate community events.

The gardens are liv-ing demonstration land-scapes where you can explore and learn what to grow in our challeng-ing western slope gar-dens. They are free and open anytime; just open the deer gate to walk through. Donations are welcome. Self-guided garden tour benefits Montrose Botanic Gardens

A musical version of “The Velveteen Rabbit,” based on the 1922 clas-sic tale by Margery Wil-liams, will be presented by Magic Circle Players’ Theatre for Children. Evening performances are scheduled for June 10, 17, 18, at 7 p.m. and matinees June 11, 12 and 18, at 2 p.m.

“The Velveteen Rabbit” is directed by Pat Myers and assistant Suzanne Rose, with vocal director Allyson Crosby, accom-panist Emily Johannes-sen and choreographers Chris Boyce and Luke Hatten rounding out the production team. This adaptation captures all the tenderness and magic of the original story and adds six beautiful songs.

A young boy receives the Velveteen Rabbit as a Christmas gift. The rab-

bit is then added to the toy box with all of the other toys and becomes the boy’s favorite. Eventu-ally the Rabbit is told by the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest resident of the toy box, that all the nurs-ery toys have one wish in mind, and that is to be made “real” through the love of a human.

Mark Roeber and Roger Bentley were asked a short series of questions, as a means of introducing themselves to the Republican voters in Delta County.

Mark RoeberMark Roeber was

raised and educated in the Paonia area. Other than a short stint in Denver for college, he’s been a lifetime resident of Delta County. He has been married to his wife Jody for 35 years. They have four children and four grandchildren.

Roeber served on the Delta County Live-stock Board from 1987-1996. While president, he served on an ad hoc committee put together by the county to develop

and write the county’s current Master Plan. He is active in the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), serving on the federal lands committee which reviews BLM and USFS policy and rule-making related to graz-ing. He filled a similar role for the National Beef Cattlemen’s Association. He also served on the board of directors and as CCA president.

In 1998, Mt. Lamborn Ranches Ltd. (his family ranch partnership) and five other local ranch-es formed Homestead Meats to try and market beef directly to the con-sumer. That corporation is still going today.

Numerous lawsuits have been filed over the county’s Specific Devel-opment process. What changes do you believe

should be made to the county’s land use regula-tions to avoid expensive litigation?

Prior to the Specific Development Regula-tion, Delta County had no land use regulations. Anyone could start any business or land use at any location. Specific Development regulations were created to bring people to the table to try and mitigate issues, concerns and impacts of business or land use to fit the neighborhood and be compatible. Exam-ples were cell towers, gravel pits, laying hen house, etc., that prior to the Specific Develop-ment regulations could be built anywhere with no review or opportu-nity for public comment or resolution of issues. SDR was patterned as

a conditional use or spe-cial use in a zone dis-trict with Delta County being one zone. The con-flict arises when neigh-bors do not want the new business or land use in their neighborhood. The Specific Development regulations do not define where in Delta County a new business or land use should be placed. This is what is producing the conflict/litigation and has deterred new busi-ness and land uses from locating in Delta County. Land use tools need to be created to determine the type of land uses proper-ty owners desire in areas of Delta County so busi-ness has some assurance and clarity of where they can do business. This has become a challenge for any business to locate in Delta County. The cur-rent Delta County com-missioners have com-mitted to updating the Master Plan, which is 20 years old, and using the input of the citizens to write a land use plan. I feel this has become necessary to continue to move our county for-ward and diversify our economy while preserv-ing this special piece of the world in which we love and live.

What does right to farm mean to you?

Pretty much just what it says. You have the right to till, graze, work land to produce food and fiber for a living and support of mankind as a whole. There are sights, smells, dusts, etc., that may be inconvenient or con-sidered nuisances that occur, but that is rural living. People need to have respect and appre-ciation for what really attracted them here in the first place.

How can our interests best be heard at the feder-al level, when it comes to rulemaking that affects the people and resources of Delta County?

Getting interests heard and addressed at the federal level is about persistence and building relationships and part-ners. The short-term sat-isfaction of having your say is not what gets you the best results in the long run. Relationships with our federal elected officials and their staff are essential as well as working relationships with agency directors and staff to help guide and shape plans that affect citizens and economies of Delta County.

What can the coun-ty commissioners do to address the economic challenges resulting from the coal mine lay-

offs? Please consider the impacts to the budget, as well as the economic health of the county as a whole.

The commissioner can address our econom-ic challenges in many ways. Trying to make our county attractive to potential business is par-amount. Through a mini-mal amount of land use changes (to give infra-structure and ability to be there), keeping tax structure low, and appre-ciation of business are to name a few. Prioritizing spending to help facili-tate that is a must do.

Broadband is becom-ing what electricity was. More necessity than lux-ury. We need to continue help in getting it here. Marketing Delta County is another.

Keeping government small and efficient.

I feel I am the most qualified commissioner candidate for multiple reasons. I have the first term under my belt. The learning curve is less for me which in these chal-lenging times is a plus. Those relationships and partnerships needed are already in place in my case and I look forward to be able to use those to bring a better future to our county. While I know we have to be prudent and conservative in our budgets we still have to have vision of where we want to be. Not just where we have been. I feel I can better help Delta County achieve that, with a mix of “old and new” ideas. I hope to continue to serve this county I love and call home.

lived in Delta County since 1993. A chiroprac-tor, he has an office in Austin and also farms, grazes cows and raises pasture hay on 340+ acres in Peach Valley. He is involved in custom farming on a small scale.

Numerous lawsuits have been filed over the county’s Specific Devel-opment process. What changes do you believe should be made to the county’s land use regula-tions to avoid expensive litigation?

Specific Development regulations should be eliminated on private property. The specific development regulations appear to me to be an attempt to act in the

absence of zoning. Many have relocated to Delta County because Delta has no zoning or build-ing codes. When this becomes inconvenient, they change their posi-tion.

What does right to farm mean to you?

The unalienable right to plant, protect and harvest horticulture and animal husbandry with-out violating adjoining property. Concerns may be mitigated through the county health depart-ment.

How can our interests best be heard at the feder-al level, when it comes to rulemaking that affects the people and resources of Delta County?

We must challenge and extinguish the pseu-do authority of the fed-eral agencies, including the EPA, BLM, USFS, DOT, etc. We must lean on and pressure the state and federal legislators to do their job.

What can the coun-ty commissioners do to address the economic challenges resulting from the coal mine lay-offs? Please consider the impacts to the budget, as well as the economic health of the county as a whole.

The economic health of the county is a direct reflection of the citizens of the county. The citizens are holding tightened purse strings, therefore, the county must tighten its purse strings. Cut the budget across the board. Get out of the way of pri-vate business.

Please share why you are the most qualified candidate for county com-missioner.

I am not afraid to say NO when it comes to over-reach upon the citizens of Delta County. I was one of the 40+ citizens who met multiple evenings for seven months fighting to protect the watersheds in the Gunnison Basin Wild & Scenic stake-holder group in 2010 and 2011. The BLM was behind the water grab, and the citizens making up the stakeholder group turned them back. I was proud to stand in the tir-ing effort. Standing on principle reaps rewards.

Crawford may be rural, but it has many desirable features and hidden gems. In addition to being near Crawford Airport, Black Canyon National Monu-ment, Crawford State Park and some of the most beautiful scenery in the state, Crawford has a rich arts community that includes world-class glass stu-dios K Dahl Glass and North Rim Glass. Just beyond town, people come from all over the world to stay at the Smith Fork Ranch, and have their four-legged friends trained by renowned dog trainer Ted Hoff at Cottonwood Ranch and Kennel.

This week, Crawford and the North Fork Valley will cel-ebrate the 38th annual Pio-neer Days.

This year’s theme is “So True... Red, White & Blue.” The parade, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, will honor local veterans and firefighters. Crawford’s own American Idol finalist, Jeneve Rose Mitchell, was selected as parade grand marshal and will sing the national anthem ahead of the parade.

The celebration kicks off Thursday evening with the annual Dessert Theater Melo-drama, “Perils of Priscilla” (see related story). The annual Fire

Auxiliary auction and dinner happen Friday and benefit next year’s fireworks display.

This year’s festival sees the return of the Chili Cook-Off Saturday afternoon as well as the Outhouse Races and Hay Bale Races. Booths, games, live entertainment and kids’ train rides happen from 1-4 p.m.

This year’s celebration promises to be one of the big-gest and best. And there’s much to celebrate, as Crawford is seeing an increase in visitors, the opening of new businesses, an up-tick in property sales, and some new and exciting ventures on the horizon.

At the corner of Highway 92 and H Street in the heart of downtown Crawford, the Hitching Post, with its tall false front and large red and white signs, is the most vis-ible business in town. It offers everything from hardware, feed and tack, to laundry facilities and motel rooms. Gary and Bonnie Hess pur-chased the business, which was recently named Business of the Year by the Crawford Chamber of Commerce, about four and a half years ago. They also own The Desperado just

south of town, where they sell gas and groceries and cater to fishermen and hunters.

It’s gotten busier over the past year, said the Hess’ niece, Tami Carver, who was mind-ing the store. Carver said that tourism brings in a little busi-ness, and she’s looking for-ward to the busy Pioneer Days weekend. But it’s the locals who keep them going. “In the summer they buy hardware and in the winter they buy feed,” she said.

Like most Crawford resi-dents, she worries about what the recent mine closures will do to the town. Then again, she said, a lot of new people are moving in.

Across the highway, Joe and Janet Gregson opened Wild Country Keepsakes last year. Graduates of then Mesa State University, they bought the property in 2004 follow-ing a visit. They retired here, said Joe, “because the West-

ern Slope is a nice place to live.” Their eclectic business is an outlet for some 25 local consigners, including Janet’s handmade children’s clothing and other textiles. They carry a growing selection of books for all ages as well as many local-ly authored titles. They also carry an assortment of other items and gifts for sportsmen to take home to their families, and coordinate with the Hitch-ing Post to ensure they don’t duplicate their efforts. “We’re trying to cater to both locals and visitors,” said Janet.

The business also benefits daughter Nicole Reasoner, who operates Wild Country Photography. Reasoner is also president of the Crawford Area Chamber of Commerce and the Pioneer Days photogra-pher. The chamber is rebuild-ing after nearly dissolving last fall due to lack of volunteers. Last fall it elected a board and began recruiting volunteers, among them, Janet Gregson.

While starting the business in a quiet, rural town was a risk, they have more confi-dence than they’ve had in a while. “There’s definitely more traffic coming through,” said Nicole.

Joe, who retired from the U.S. Forest Service, is work-ing to bring the area into the 21st century by updating GPS data. Because it is outdated, it’s problematic for anyone using Google Maps or other online maps, said Joe. The chamber is also updating bro-chures, because the area isn’t mobile phone friendly, added Reasoner.

Down the street, the Stone House Inn Bed & Breakfast is a Crawford landmark. Owner Nathan Sponseller opened the inn in 2000. Built in 1907, it was a private residence its first 40 years and has served

Celebrate Pioneer Days in Crawford

According to government census data, America’s pop-ulation is getting older. By 2030, Colorado’s 65-and-older population is expected to grow from 555,000 to 1,243,000; Delta County is expected to increase its 65-and-older pop-ulation an estimated 50- to 80-percent.

Last year, the group Aging in Place was created by a group of retired and semi-retired professionals con-cerned about the issues facing aging seniors. AIP announced its plans to create a network of volunteers and professional service providers to help sup-port the North Fork area’s aging citizens. The group sur-veyed local seniors and found that many are more likely to remain at home and inde-pendent for a longer period if they just had a little help.

AIP formed a task force to study how to help seniors remain independent, and joined Village to Village (www.vtvnetwork.org), a network of neighbors helping neighbors. Since last year, the group has been working to establish a network of volunteers and professional service providers that senior members can rely on when they need help. Hav-ing quality services readily available “lessens stress and worry while giving work to locals,” said member Kathy Thompson.

Services would include transportation, yard work, plumbing and electrical, snow shoveling and other functions that require pro-fessional skills or that are difficult for seniors to per-form. The network would link pre-approved, vetted service providers directly to seniors through the volunteer net-work.

On June 1, the group held a meeting at the Paonia Library to update the public on its progress and to announce a new partnership. In research-ing names for the group, Thompson discovered “A Little Help” on ColoradoGives.org,

a website providing informa-tion on the state’s nonprofits. ALH’s mission turned out to be in line with their mission.

They contacted ALH and held a series of meetings. The Denver-based organiza-tion was impressed with how far along they were in their plans, but had concerns about the geographical distance. But they were willing to listen and had also recently added a Chaffee County branch. Based on the success of that arrangement according to an ALH newsletter, “We decided to partner our efforts with theirs.”

AIP will now be known as “A Little Help North Fork Val-ley.”

With the support of ALH, the group estimates it can reduce initial startup costs by at least $30,000. It also allows them to eliminate an initial enrollment fee of $330-$995 per person. For an annual fee, currently estimated at $225 per person and $250 per couple, members will have access to services and other benefits.

While the group was look-ing at taking a year to create the infrastructure, Thompson said the partnership allows

them to begin providing ser-vices sooner. They are now looking for office space and to hire a local branch coordi-nator. The organization also needs to raise the $20,000 in startup costs and seeks donors, interested members and professional service pro-viders. Volunteer training will be provided.

Volunteers will not pro-vide services, said lead mem-ber Dave Knutson, a retired human resources professional. All services will be provided by professionals, who will also be paid directly. “We want to put money into the pockets of the providers, not a bureau-cracy,” said Knutson.

During her regular town manager’s report at the May 24 board meeting, Jane Berry informed trustees that the town is facing potentially big cuts in its annual payment of severance tax and mineral leasing dollars.

The issue was one of many addressed at a recent meet-ing of the Colorado Municipal League. In the 2016 budget, the town estimates payments of $63,000 — $29,000 in sev-erance taxes and $34,000 in mineral leasing — to the gen-eral fund this September. It probably won’t be that much, said Berry, calling it “a huge issue across the state, and most certainly for the West-ern Slope.”

Declines in severance tax and mineral leasing payments have cost the town’s general fund about $100,000 over the last five years. “Not long ago we were getting $115,000, $120,000 per year,” said Berry. This year, she said, “We’ll be lucky if we get $45,000. We’re going to get some portion of it, we just don’t know how much.”

In addition, said Berry, the regional manager with the Department of Local Affairs announced that the state has frozen its pool of grant money, which will affect its Energy

Impact Assistance Program. Delta County is relying on those grants after recent local coal mine closures and the loss of numerous high-paying jobs related to coal mining.

The DOLA web page states that grant funds “have been ‘frozen’ (not taken) until fur-ther notice. This is a result of potential liabilities against the severance tax funds based on a Supreme Court ruling.” The ruling has the state scrambling to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in refunds to the energy industry.

In addition, the Aug. 1 application deadline for Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Fund grants has been delayed, said Berry. “I can’t begin to tell you how many millions of dollars of infrastructure projects this affects in this state every year.” Because of the dwin-dling severance tax and min-eral leasing revenues, “The state is really hurting.”

That fund has been lush in prior years, said Berry. The town most recently benefit-ed from a $1 million energy impact assistance grant to help pay for its state-man-dated water delivery system improvements.

Berry said the town won’t know how big of a hit it will take until checks arrive in September.

Will Miss Priscilla give in and sacrifice her honor so nieces Becky and Becky can have their much-needed operation? Or will she fend off the advances of dastardly school board head Smedley Smidgin? What ever will the new school teacher do? Will Smedley prevail and have his way? Or will the not-so-dastardly hero, Harlowe Starbuck, save the day? And who killed schoolmas-ter Mr. Tyler?

There’s only one way to find out. Attend the annu-al Pioneer Days Old-Fash-ioned Dessert Theater melodrama, “Perils of Pris-cilla, or The Schoolmarm’s Dilemma,” this Thursday evening at Crawford Town Hall.

This year marks 36 years for Pioneer Days melodramas, said Rick Steckel, who will make a brief appearance as school-master Mr. Tyler in this

1965 Shubert Fendrich melodrama. Steckel has acted in all 36 melodra-mas representing 25 dif-ferent skits. Despite some repeats, no two melodra-mas are alike, said Steck-el. That’s the nature of the fast-moving melodrama, where ad-lib is the norm, virtue overcomes vice, and

the hero always saves the day.

This year’s cast fea-tures Ashley Lovato as Miss Priscilla, Justin Holt as Harlowe Starbuck, and Tanya Gallob as Smedley Smidgin. Nieces Becky and Becky are played by Erin Gallob and Cally Gallegos, and Cheyenne and David Gallob are school children Jenney and Freckles.

Three performances will be given, beginning Thurs-day evening with the Des-sert Theater performance at Crawford Town Hall. Encore performances will be given Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the Town Hall stage following the Pioneer Days parade.

Tickets are $5 for the dessert theater, $3 for Saturday’s performances, and are available at the door and at The Desper-ado, Needle Rock Realty, Crawford Country Bank and Crawford Town Hall. Proceeds benefit the North Fork Ambulance.

He spent the last year remodeling and was working on final touch-es in order to reopen in time for Pioneer Days. Business at the B&B has gradually improved over the years, said Sponseller, president of the Hotchkiss Area Chamber of Com-merce. He sees lots of people stopping through and supporting local busi-nesses, including the Old Mad Dog Café.

Chef John Lazarski re-opened the cafe, which Joe Cocker opened as the Mad Dog Ranch Fountain Café in the 1990s. In addition to the large dining area decorated in locally-made wood and glass fixtures, Lazarski invested in a massive Western-style bar, where people can go to hear live music. Lazar-

ski said he’s also hoping to bring in some big-name bands and hold a street party over the Labor Day weekend. He says busi-ness was good last sum-mer, winter was slow, as expected, and things were picking up by mid-May.

Lazarski and other business owners are encouraged by the increase in property sales, includ-ing the recent sale of the Vagabond building and the new owner’s plans to remodel. The former Bee Yard Gardens also sold to a young couple plan-ning to build and sell tiny homes.

Liz Heidrick, owner of Needle Rock Realty, said the real estate market is seeing steady, healthy growth. As with the Vagabond, “We’re seeing things that lingered on the market a long time get gobbled up.”

Heidrick has lived in Crawford 25 years and her children are fourth-

generation natives. Like many local ladies, she’s involved in numerous organizations. She loves the sense of community in Crawford, which is appar-ent even in the new-com-ers, many of whom left the Front Range for a slower pace of life. It’s a great place to live, she said, “as long as you don’t need to go to the mall every day.”

Son Brady Todd, a for-mer U.S. Marine, came home after traveling the world and recently earned his real estate license and joined the Crawford fire department. “I love it here and I want to share it with everyone else,” he said. “This is the best place on the planet.”

Heidrick said she’d like to see a few more busi-nesses open. She added that it’s more important than ever for people to support local businesses whenever possible.

“It’s a pretty magical place,” she said.

The Bureau of Land Management’s Uncompahgre Field Office announces the release of a draft plan for managing BLM-adminis-tered surface land and mineral estate in south-western Colorado. The draft Resource Manage-ment Plan revision (RMP) features a wide range of alternatives reflect-ing different visions for administering these lands and seeks public review and comment to help refine the draft into a final plan to guide the overall management of these resources for the next two decades. The 90-day comment period on the draft began on June 3 with the publication of a Notice of Availability by the Environmental Pro-tection Agency.

“We have worked with partners in 25 communi-ties to develop the range of alternatives in this draft plan, including a community vision for the North Fork Valley,” said Dana Wilson, acting BLM Uncompahgre field man-ager. “These are some of the public’s most spec-tacular landscapes, from canyon country to the foothills of the West Elk Mountains and Grand Mesa, providing recre-ational opportunities, wildlife habitat, forage for grazing and energy resources.”

The draft RMP will guide the management of about 675,800 acres of BLM-administered sur-face lands and 971,220 acres of federal min-eral estate. Up to 2,650 jobs and $565 million in regional economic pro-duction could be gener-ated annually from these public lands, including recreation, agriculture and energy development.

The plan analyzes the impacts of a wide range of possible alternatives. The BLM is required to identify a preferred alter-native, but any of the management actions ana-lyzed in these alterna-tives could become part of the proposed RMP, which BLM will develop after analyzing the public com-ments on the draft RMP.

The proposed RMP for the Uncompahgre Field Office is scheduled for release in 2017. The BLM’s Preferred Alter-native emphasizes bal-ancing resources and resource use among competing human inter-ests, land uses and the conservation of natural

and cultural resource values while sustaining and enhancing ecological integrity across the land-scape, including plant, wildlife and fish habitat. This alternative incorpo-rates a balanced level of protection, restoration, enhancement, and use of resources and services to meet ongoing programs and land uses.

The Uncompahgre Field Office currently operates under the 1985 San Juan/San Miguel RMP and the 1989 Uncompahgre Basin RMP. These plans typi-cally last about 20 years and are revised to address changing environmental conditions and techno-logical developments and to determine if manage-ment decisions contained within them are still cur-rent and adequate.

The BLM began the formal public scoping process for this draft plan on Feb. 25, 2010, with the publication of the Notice of Intent in the Federal Register. The initial pub-lic scoping period closed March 29, 2010. The BLM hosted seven open houses to provide the public with opportunities to become involved, learn about the project and the planning process, meet the Uncompahgre Draft RMP team members, and offer comments. During the initial public scoping period, the BLM received 214 unique written sub-missions containing 2,496 separate comments. The issues identified during public scoping and out-reach helped refine the development of alterna-tives for consideration in the draft RMP.

This draft RMP also incorporates changes that have occurred since public scoping in 2010: the Gunnison sage grouse has been listed as threat-ened; coal, oil and gas activity in the planning area have decreased due to market forces; and the North Fork oil and gas sub-alternative has been analyzed within the RMP framework.

With respect to miner-al development activities, the preferred alternative generally maintains the total area open to oil and gas leasing; however, it increases the area subject to no surface occupancy or controlled surface use stipulations in order to ensure that the develop-ment that occurs happens in a manner that protects important resource val-

ues. The draft RMP does not consider new areas for coal leasing, but the estimate of potential coal resources in the area has increased as compared to the RMP currently in place based on new infor-mation regarding the extent and recoverability of the coal resources in the planning area. This revised resource assess-ment does not impact pro-duction estimates, given that the vast majority of the newly identified coal resources are not in areas currently under produc-tion, are not of high quali-ty and likely not economi-cally recoverable. Produc-tion estimates were used to consider the impacts of potential greenhouse gas emissions, which have become increasingly important considerations in public land manage-ment decisions.

Additionally, the plans do not authorize any specific leases or mining operations; any new coal leases would require envi-ronmental reviews specif-ic to the particular lease application. The purpose of the RMP is to provide balanced management of all of the resources in the area including wild-life habitat, ranching, recreation, conservation and mineral develop-ment. Several other pro-cesses, as well as com-pliance with Secretarial Order 3338, which orders a comprehensive review of the federal coal pro-gram, would be necessary before any additional coal leasing could occur.

In addition to Secre-tarial Order 3338, the Interior Department is working separately to pursue additional reforms to the federal coal pro-gram. These include proposals — such as the Stream Protection Rule — to address the environ-mental impacts of coal mining — and the Office of Natural Resource Rev-enue valuation rules —to make sure American taxpayers are getting a fair return on the coal resources managed by the federal government.

During the 90-day public comment peri-od on this Draft RMP, the Uncompahgre Field Office is hosting six pub-lic open houses to pro-vide information and an opportunity to comment on the draft plan. Mem-bers of the public can stop by anytime between 6-8 p.m. on the follow-ing dates at the following

At the May 24 town board meeting, Paonia trustees passed a resolu-tion to accept a petition for annexation of two parcels on Samuel Wade Road.

The petition was sub-mitted by Andrew Thliver-is. The two parcels, locat-ed across from the Paonia Library, total about 2.54 acres and are currently zoned agricultural.

The family plans to market local organic fruit and other products direct to the public through its business, Berg Harvest. “This is really the begin-ning of a dream,” said Betty Mueller, the mother of Andrew Thliveris, who represented the applicant. The family farmstead home on Mathews Lane was annexed into the town several years ago.

Town Manager Jane Berry said the town has been working with the Thliveris family for

about a year, and that their intent is to keep the land in agriculture. They also own adjacent agricul-tural land, which borders town property where the former wastewater treat-ment plant was located.

This is the first phase of a multi-faceted project, said Berry. The family’s goals are in direct keeping with the goals and priori-ties of the town’s Compre-hensive Plan, which calls for preserving the rural and agricultural charac-ter of the community.

In getting water to the property, time is of the essence, said Berry. They hope to have their stand open by the Fourth of July weekend, the annu-al Cherry Days festival, and the cherry harvest. A moratorium on out-of-town water taps has been in place since 2007, which means the only way to receive the taps is through annexation or application through a water company. Because they need the

tap prior to completing the annexation process, the two parties will sign a pre-annexation agree-ment, which is expected to come before trustees at the June 14 meeting.

Because the land is under three acres, there is no legal requirement for the plan to go before the town Planning Commis-sion, said Berry. However, as a courtesy to the com-mission, which last went through an annexation process in 2012, they will review the proposal and make recommendations.

Mayor Pro Tem David Bradford thanked the Thliveris family for their willingness to annex their property. All too often, said Bradford, people want to hook onto town water but not to annex. “I am very pleased they are willing to become part of the town.”

A public hearing on the annexation application is planned for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at the regularly scheduled board meeting.

Trustees also unani-mously approved the installation of a 6-inch water main between Niagara Avenue and Sam-uel Wade Bridge. The line will connect to sections of the existing 6-inch main.

Berry and public works director Travis Loberg presented a rough dia-gram of the proposal area showing an existing 6-inch line running north down the center of Niaga-ra, then zigzagging along Fourth Street, behind the Paonia Library, along the North Fork River, then back across Third Street on the east side of Sam-uel Wade Bridge. It then crosses the northeastern edge of the former water treatment plant property and Samuel Wade Bridge, then heads back under

Third Street just west of the bridge. The line feeds three cabins on Price Road and Highway 133 Liquor.

Cost is not to exceed $25,000, of which roughly $9,700 will come from tap fees paid by the applicant. An additional $10,000 from a $65,000 sewer plant decommissioning fund will be used to offset any costs associated with the former treatment plant property.

The town will act as general contractor and hire local businesses to do additional work.

The project, said Berry, is an investment in the town’s infrastructure. In addition to allowing for the Thliveris tap, the improvement will cre-ate a loop in the system, improve water pressure and capacity, eliminate dead-end lines that can result in stagnant water, and help with flow capaci-ty for fire suppression and allow for the installation of another fire hydrant west of the bridge.

“It isn’t just for this project and community development potential,” said Berry. “It’s important for future development.”

The plan was one of three options considered by the board. The first option involved instal-lation of a 1-inch line that would service the property through a bore under Third Street. The estimated cost is $3,000. When asked by trustee Bill Brunner why that wasn’t the best option, considering the town’s finances, Berry replied that it would do nothing for the integrity of the system, an asset owned by the town that is in need of upgrades. Had past boards not gone with the cheapest options, said Berry, the proposed line would already exist.

The second option would bring water to the property via a 4-inch line pulled through a bore under Third Street, at an estimated cost of $21,000-$25,000. The bigger the bore, the higher the cost, said Berry. But again, she noted, with this option, there are no additional benefits outside of provid-ing a tap.

The option approved by trustees, added Berry, also improves the town’s chances of selling the property where the plant was located. “Obviously, as our own customer, we’d like to add value to it,” said Berry.

The wastewater infra-structure needed for a sewer tap is already in place.

The Maher-Onion Val-ley Community Club will host an open house from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, June 12, a the Maher Schoolhouse on Highway 92.

At the turn of the 19th century, one-room school-houses were common among rural communi-ties. The Maher School-house replaced an origi-nal schoolhouse, which was destroyed by fire, in 1917, said club co-presi-dent Susan Ayer. The club owns and maintains the property. The Maher school remained open until 1950 when Maher joined the Crawford School District and stu-dents began attending Crawford School.

A renovation of the classroom was completed this spring. Work includ-ed reinsulating the walls and installing new sheet-rock. The drop ceiling was removed, revealing an original stamped tin tile ceiling. Light fixtures salvaged years earlier from the old Crawford School were installed.

The project was com-pletely funded by the community, said Ayer. Crawford resident Randy Wolf donated his time and skills to complet-

ing the renovation work, which began just after Christmas. That the com-munity, including several newer residents, funded the work says a lot about the character of the peo-ple in the area, said Ayer.

The his and hers out-houses remain largely intact but could stand a little work. They also are considered historical structures. “I think it’s one of the special things about this place,” said Ayer, explaining that the privies were made

through the Works Prog-ress Administration and designed to keep flies out and be more sani-tary, thus preventing the spread of disease. It’s unusual to have one, let alone two, as few sur-vived, said Ayer.

The triple horizontal bars on what was once a playground are also original, and the tops of a dozen small card tables, purchased by the club sometime in the 1950s, are decorated with adver-tising from about 50

Delta County businesses, which represents a micro history of the area’s busi-nesses of the time.

Like most one-room schoolhouses, the build-ing has always been a cen-tral community meeting place. In addition to club meetings, the Montrose County Commission-ers hold meetings there every year. Montrose County also leases a por-tion of the property for a county shop, which helps with maintenance and upkeep of the property, said Ayer.

The club plans more renovation work, begin-ning with the foyer. Other plans include renovation of the kitchen and a bath-room. A history exhibit of the school, the Maher Post Office, and the for-mer Clear Fork School are also in the works.

The Maher-Onion Valley Community Club currently has about 20 members and meets monthly except for the summer months. “We are always looking for new and younger members,” said Ayer.

Sunday’s open house runs from 2-5 p.m. Invi-tations were sent out to the former students, said Ayer. “We’re hoping it will be a mini reunion.”

There is hardly a per-son in the North Fork area who hasn’t been affected by a wreck at the intersection of Crawford and Stewart Mesa roads.

On May 18, Paonia resident Doug Griffis was involved in one. Griffis was traveling north on Crawford Road shortly after noon on his 2000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, according to Trooper Nate Reid with the Colorado State Patrol. The driver of a 2010 Lincoln MKS trav-eling southbound failed to see him and initiat-ed a left turn. Griffis hit the passenger side of the Lincoln, suffer-ing serious injuries, said Trooper Reid.

Griffis’ wife, Kim Venard, writing through Facebook messages, said he suffered a bro-ken femur, a deeply bruised shoulder and a deep gash on his knee. While he faces months of recovery, she said he’s

lucky to be alive. The family of

Crawford residents Gill and Donna Saunders wasn’t so lucky. They lost 27-year-old son Jacob when a pickup ran a stop sign on Dec. 17, 2013. Saunders, a Delta County native and girls’ basketball coach, died at the scene, leaving his parents, four siblings and a young son behind.

Other longtime locals recall numerous wrecks over the years. In 1962, two 16-year-old Paonia sophomores, Jim Roz-man and Richard Schro-eder, were killed after a car traveling north on Crawford Road at a high rate of speed broadsided their vehicle. Saunders said his family now avoids the intersection altogether.

Jim Rozman’s brother, Al Rozman of Paonia, said Schroeder was killed instantly. His brother survived and was taken to the Hotchkiss clinic before being airlifted to Grand

Junction, where he passed away. Al Rozman said Jim told him at the clinic that they came to a complete stop before entering the intersec-tion, but couldn’t see the oncoming due to dense vegetation until it was too late. A page in the 1962 Eyre yearbook is dedicated to the two stu-dents.

A few years back Delta County cut the fences back and cleared veg-etation, said Rozman. “I thought that was a big improvement.”

Delta County com-missioners are aware of the concerns, but don’t have any immediate plans for changes, said commissioner Mark Roeber, who represents the North Fork area. “It’s just about people being more careful and aware of what they’re doing,” said Roeber.

Doug Griffis said a roundabout would fix the intersection, although he knows that’s not like-ly to happen. He wasn’t the only patient at the Denver hospital where he was admitted who was there after being hit on a motorcycle, and he asks people to be more aware of motorcycles when they’re driving, said Venard.

Following Saunders’ death, rumble strips, raised markers that alert motorists of some-thing up ahead by caus-ing vehicles to vibrate, were installed in both directions of Stewart Mesa Road. Gill Saun-ders said more needs to be done.

Saunders, a former Crawford trustee, said he wants to see more done to make the inter-section safe, including creating a four-way stop and reducing the speed limit. “Short of some-one patrolling it, you’re probably not going to change it much,” he said. Saunders said a family friend also lost his wife and child at the intersection shortly before he and his family moved to Crawford 30 years ago. Realistically, said Saunders, whose father taught driver’s education for 30 years, “If people that drive do so irresponsibly, then you’re always going to have these wrecks.”

The Town of Paonia will hold a special board of trustees orientation session from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9. The agenda will focus solely on the adopted 2016 budget and asso-ciated financial issues and the town’s goals and priorities related to the budget. The meeting is part of the ongoing ori-entation sessions for the newly seated board of trustees. The public is invited to observe, as the agenda does not provide for public comment.

On May 28, North Fork father, husband and all around great guy Michael Hillman was in an accident that result-ed in a debilitating and life-changing spinal cord injury and quadriplegia.

Fundraising efforts are underway to help the family with immedi-ate and long-term needs, including a remodel of their home and purchase

of a van and a wheel-chair.

Two topics being con-sidered by the Crawford town council will be dis-cussed at the June 15 work session.

Council members are considering placing a mill levy increase before vot-ers this November. Delta County Assessor Debbie Griffith will attend the meeting to explain how the mill levy is calcu-lated, what an increase might look like for prop-erty owners, and what the town can and can’t do in creating a ballot question. Individual property owners will also be able to access infor-mation regarding how an increase will affect their property taxes.

At 2.420 mills ($2.42 assessed for each $1,000 of assessed property value), Crawford has the lowest mill levy in the county. According to the town’s 2016 budget, Crawford will collect $6,412 in property taxes this year, up from $5,937 in 2015. The previous council and then-mayor Susie Steckel urged the town, in light of decreas-ing mineral lease and severance tax dollars related to mine closures,

to consider putting the question to voters.

In addition, Sheriff Fred McKee will be on hand to answer questions about what it would take for the town to establish a municipal court and provide law enforcement in order to enforce town codes.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. Since it is a work session, no actions will be taken on either item, and public comment is welcome.

Mill levy increase on Crawford’s agenda


Some opportunities come only once, and this Saturday night, “Mark Turnbull and friends: A one-man show” is just such an opportunity. Turnbull, a songwriter, composer, storyteller, actor, virtuoso, guitarist,

lyricist and poet, melts all of those traditional disciplines into an eve-ning of pure entertain-ment few performers could pull off in a single one-man show.

Like his host and longtime friend, North Fork troubadour Mike Gwinn, Turnbull is a

product of 1960s South-ern California, where they grew up a few miles apart — Turnbull in hip Newport Beach and Gwinn in tiny Laguna Beach.

Like Gwinn, Turnbull was born into a show biz family. His mother was a Vaudeville, radio and

motion picture perform-er, while his dad sang and danced on stage, in the movies, in summer stock theater, and on the small screen during the golden age of television. Turnbull always hung out at the theater during rehearsals and shows, and at a young age had memorized entire musi-cals like Oklahoma! and Showboat.

“We were very fortu-nate to grow up in a very rich age in music,” said Turnbull. He cites the 1967 Beatles album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, as a major influence. The Fab Four included numerous genres on a single album, which was unheard of at the time.

By high school he was an established writer and musician, garnering a Grammy nomination by writing the lyrics to a Disney album, “A Happy Birthday Party With Winnie the Pooh.” He also formed bands, but whether blues, jazz or jug, the other members always quit, said Turn-bull. He soon realized he was meant to perform solo.

At 15 he made his professional debut as a guitarist for Glen Yar-brough. He was the opening solo act for Chet Baker, Stan Getz, the Dilliards, Muddy Waters, Ian and Sylvia and others. In 1968 he

released “Portrait of the Young Artist” on vinyl, which is categorized in the jazz, rock, pop, folk, world and country genres.

Through a twist of fate, Turnbull joined Gwinn’s band Gabriel Gladstar, which record-ed and toured the coun-try in an old school bus. Today, Gwinn refers to Turnbull as the “great musical wizard.”

Through his original lyrics, and with the help of his nylon-stringed classical guitar, Turn-bull shares stories of life and its ironies with

humor, wit and charm. While most of his mate-rial is uniquely original, he occasionally draws from his theater influ-ences, inserting stan-dards from the Great American Songbook. “Those songs occasional-ly come in handy,” says Turnbull.

The Paradise doors will open at 7 p.m., and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance at Lizzie’s Market, Paonia Farm & Home, The Cirque, and at the Paradise; or $20 at the door.

A few of Turnbull’s CDs will be available at the show. He’s also work-ing on new materials for another CD, but it’s slow going. Says Turnbull, “I have a lot of material, but I like the live perfor-mances.”

The Kids’ Pasta Proj-ect will host a fundraiser dinner for Jamaica Out-reach at 6 p.m. Monday, June 13, at Delicious Orchards, 39126 Hwy. 133, Paonia. Cost is $14 for adults, $8 for kids, and includes lasagna, salad and dessert.

Harold HainingHarold Eugene Hain-

ing died Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at his home in Delta. He was 92.

A memorial service was held Monday, June 6, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Delta.

Mr. Haining was born in Broken Bow, Neb., Nov. 14, 1923, to John and Clara (Osterloh) Hain-ing. He spent his child-hood and attended school in Nebraska. He moved to Grand Junction in 1954.

On Dec. 4, 1954, he married Mary L. Angotti in Raton, N.M. They had four children. The family moved to Delta in 1979.

Mr. Haining belonged to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Delta. He was a member of 4-H and FFA. He enjoyed fishing, hunt-ing, farming and especial-ly working.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Haining of Delta; two sons, Jim (Debbie) Hain-ing of Las Vegas, Nev., and Ron (Kim) Haining of Delta; two daughters, Julie (Gene) Thompson of Grand Junction and Joyce (Glen) Conger of Delta; a sister, Norma Barker of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grand-children; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers; two sisters; a son; three daughters; and an ex-wife.

Bobbie Jo HammerBobbie Jo Ellen Ham-

mer died Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at her home in Delta. She was 44.

A private family ser-vice will be held at a later date.

Ms. Hammer was born in Rocky Ford Dec. 21, 1971, to Buddy Curtis and Carla Leonard. She spent her childhood in Rocky Ford and graduated from Rocky Ford High School.

She lived in La Junta for four years and Salt Lake City, Utah, for two years before moving to Delta where she lived the past six years.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She wanted to be a race car driver and/or a Dallas Cowboy cheerlead-er. She enjoyed listening to music, watching mov-ies, reading, and arts and crafts projects, especially making pillow tops.

Ms. Hammer is survived by her children, Ruben Hammer of Crawford and Chantel Hammer; her father, Buddy (Helen) Curtis; a stepbrother, Brian (Michelle) Martin, all of Delta; and four sis-ters, Thresa Hammer, Anna Kay and Maria Melendez, all of Olympia, Wash., and Chrystal Cur-tis of Montrose.

She was preceded in death by her mother; and two brothers, James Ham-mer and Lewis Camacho Jr.

Walt RoyWalter James Roy Sr.

died at his home in Eckert June 2, 2016. He was 93.

He was born in Lake Placid, N.Y., to Paul and Agnes (Trumbull) Roy March 27, 1923.

Mr. Roy joined the U.S. Army and served in the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale and in Italy as a ski instructor during World War II.

He met Afton “Bonnie” Dunston in Glenwood Springs and they married March 26, 1944. They had three children. She died in May 1991.

After the war, Mr. Roy worked at White Face Mountain in Lake Placid, N.Y., and helped build the ski lift for the Olym-pics. He was a draftsman at Rochester Products in New York until 1959 when the family moved to Glenwood Springs. They owned and operated Glen-wood Bowl for 35 years.

He married Earla Jean Bailey of Grand Junc-tion in September 1991. They traveled the United States and Canada on the Senior Bowling Tour where he competed as a senior professional bowl-er. He held two national bowling titles as well as the record for the oldest to roll a 300. At one point he and all three of his sons were professional bowlers. He was inducted into the Colorado Bowling Hall of Fame.

In 1994 he opened Walt’s Pro Shop in Grand Junction and later man-aged Freeway Bowl until 2006. He retired and moved to Eckert in 2008.

Mr. Roy was a sports-man. He played golf, base-ball and football, bowled, skied and skated. At 9 years old he did an exhibi-tion in speed skating for the 1932 Winter Olym-pics in Lake Placid. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards with family and friends, espe-cially poker.

He is survived by his wife, Earla Jean Bailey Roy; his sons, W. James (Dorlene) Roy Jr. of Glenwood Springs, Rob-ert (Dana) Roy of Castle Pines and David (Kathi) Roy of Palisade; four step-children, Sr. Debra Bailey of Owensboro, Ky., James (Khristie) Bailey of Show Low, Ariz., Kathy (Pete) Burgess of Denver and Ken Bailey of Cedaredge; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and seven great-grandchil-dren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Roy Jr.

Graveside services will be held at Rosebud Ceme-tery in Glenwood Springs at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 8.

Cowboy GrayThomas Owen “Cow-

boy” Gray died June 3, 2016. He was 71.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 9, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Inurnment will take place at 3 p.m., Friday, June 10, at Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Col-orado in Grand Junction.

Mr. Gray was born in Big Springs, Texas, May 1, 1945, to Owen and Lorena Gray. He spent his childhood on West Texas ranches and graduated in Van Horn, Texas.

He joined the U.S. Air Force and was a Viet-nam veteran and an air policeman. After his tour in Vietnam, he was sta-tioned at Carswell Air Force Base where he met and married Troy Ann. They moved back to Van Horn, Texas.

Mr. Gray was a fore-man for the Texas Depart-ment of Highways and Transportation. He later took a job with Texaco and moved to Monah-ans, Texas. When he was offered early retirement from Texaco at the age of 50, the family moved to Cedaredge where he worked for the Cedaredge Public Works Department until he retired.

He was a cowboy, bull-rider, policeman, fire-fighter for Van Horn Vol-unteer Fire Department and a black belt in Isshin-

Ryu karate. He enjoyed being a husband, father and grandfather, hunting, shooting, camping and four-wheeling.

Mr. Gray is survived by his wife, Troy Ann; his sons, Tyler (Elaine) Gray and their daughter Har-lyn, and Trent (Christy) Gray and their children Kamry, Garrett and Emily; and his sisters, Pat McGinty and Theresa Painter.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Ann Hendrix.

Christopher YoungCrawford resident

Christopher M. Young died at his home Sunday, May 29, 2016. He was 56.

He lived in Crawford for the past eight years.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life was held. His ashes will be scattered in the Henry Mountains by his best friend Dale McLaugh-lin of Utah.

Mr. Young was born in Detroit, Mich., May 11, 1960, to Gerald and Sally (Kozlowski) Young. He attended school in Detroit.

On June 17, 2004, he married Tammy Hayes in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He was previously a coal miner at West Elk Mine. He was a mechanic and was skilled in fix-ing anything with a motor or farm implements and other equipment.

While in Montana, Mr. Young worked for a packer to learn how to pack in on mules. When he moved to Colorado he bought several mules and frequently went up into the West Elks.

He and his friend Dale McLaughlin explored the west deserts of Utah and the Henry Mountains. They rapelled down to the caves in Robbers Roost.

He enjoyed guns, the mountains, camping, his-tory, especially the old west including the Wild Bunch and the two World Wars, his rat terriers and four-wheeling. He was often seen driving his four-wheeler on his way to irrigate for the neigh-boring ranches.

Mr. Young is survived by his wife, Tammy of Crawford; his mother, Sally Allen and his step-father, Bud, of Florida; a stepson, Colby Hayes of Longmont; his broth-er, Jeff (Jonna) Young of Michigan; two stepbroth-ers, Jim Allen of Florida and Michael Allen of Ohio; his sister, Julie (Stewart) Bartosh of Florida; and a stepsister, Deborah Allen of Florida.



Ruth FooteRuth Marie Nelson

Foote died Sunday, May 29, 2016, in Delta. She was 91.

Graveside services were held Monday, June 6, at Delta City Cemetery with Pastor Paul Rosin of All Saints Lutheran Church officiating.

Mrs. Foote was born in Wakonda, S.D., Sept. 20, 1924, to Gabriel and Edna (Heglin) Nelson. She had three siblings, Dorothy, Betty and Fred.

After high school grad-uation she attended col-lege and became a teach-er. She specialized in art, teaching in South Dakota and later in Colorado.

On June 1, 1968, she married Ralph Foote of Boulder. They purchased a farm near Delta where they raised livestock and farmed.

Mrs. Foote continued painting, making seri-graphs and prints at her home studio. She had many art shows around the Western Slope.

Her faith was an inte-gral part of her life. She performed as a soloist with her church choir and many other church-es. She often donated her art to church fundraising activities.

Following her hus-band’s death in January 2003, Mrs. Foote contin-ued to live on their Delta farm until moving to a retirement facility.



James CooleyJames Everett Cooley

died June 2, 2016, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 81.

He was born in Chama, N.M., Jan. 3, 1935, to Claude and Aimee (Rick-etts) Cooley. He spent his early childhood in Chama. The family lived in Los Alamos, N.M., from 1943-1947 before moving to Hotchkiss in 1947. Mr. Cooley attended school in Hotchkiss.

In 1957 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After basic training he was sta-tioned in Africa for the duration of his service. He was honorably dis-charged in 1963.

Mr. Cooley was a car-penter and builder. He built several homes in the area.

He was a member of the first sanitation board in Hotchkiss in the early 1970s and was respon-sible for the annexation of the Cooley Addition to the Town of Hotchkiss in 1977.

In 1971 he married Marjorie (Geyer) Carver. They celebrated 31 years of marriage before her death in 2003.

Mr. Cooley married Marion (McCabe) Piburn in 2008.

He enjoyed helping people in need.

He is survived by his wife, Marion; a brother, Robert “Bob” Cooley of Clovis, N.M.; his stepchil-dren, Cody (Tami) Carver, Cindy (Tom) Roundtree, Jody Taylor, Colin Piburn, Nona Piburn, Renee Waltz and Donna Stout; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie; two infant sib-lings; two brothers, Mel-vin and Kenneth; and two sisters, Lorraine and Carol.

Cremation has taken place. At his request, no services will be held.

Jerry CobbJerry Lewy Cobb died

April 11, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, due to compli-cations from a massive heart attack suffered on Feb. 22, 2016. He was 73.

He was born in Pat-terson, Mo., March 16, 1943. The family moved to Olathe in 1952. He attended Fairview School and Olathe High School.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 18, at the Lions Pavilion at Conflu-ence Park.

Kenneth HiltonPaonia resident Ken-

neth Hilton died Monday, May 30, 2016, at Paonia Care Center. He was 91.

Cremation has taken place. A private fam-ily memorial service with inurnment in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Crawford will be held at a later date.

Kenneth Arthur Hil-ton was born in Eureka, Calif., Feb. 22, 1925, to Ralph and Edith (Err-ington) Hilton. He spent his childhood in Arcata, Calif., and graduated from Arcata High School in 1943.

He married Marlys J. VanDenBerg on April 21, 1945, in San Francisco, Calif. They lived in Napa, Calif., before moving to Paonia where they lived for 30 years.

Mr. Hilton enjoyed reading, building, puz-zles, learning and vol-unteering at Paonia Ele-mentary School. He was of a non-denominational faith.

He is survived by his wife, Marlys; three daughters, Janet (Mor-rie) Rupp, Elaine (Rich-ard) Davis and Jeanine (Joseph) Finnell; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Shari SampsonShari L. Sampson died

June 1, 2016, at the home of longtime friend Jane Poulos in Paonia. She was 85.

She was born in Tem-ple, Texas, Jan. 2, 1931, to Ila Johnson and Corne-lius Sampson. She gradu-ated from McClain High School. She received a bachelor of arts degree in drama and psychol-ogy from Texas Christian University in 1953.

In high school and col-lege Ms. Sampson acted in stage shows and par-ticipated in rodeo and ski club. Skiing took her to Aspen. She became a stu-dent of Stein Eriksen and went to the Olympics at Mt. Shasta.

During World War II, Ms. Sampson sang and danced in USO shows and said she danced to all the big bands at the Lake Worth Casino.

While living in Texas, she worked as a clerk and typist at the first nuclear plant built in Plano, Texas. She moved to Aspen in 1955 and worked many jobs to live close to Ajax, Little Nell and Buttermilk.

In 1970, she converted to Catholicism and took her first communion at that time.

Ms. Sampson moved to Paonia in 1999 where she continued her animal rescue activites in honor of St. Francis. She res-cued over 5,000 animals in her lifetime. She also worked as a secretary for the Region 10 ombuds-man program.

She joined the PACE program in Paonia and

enjoyed memory chal-lenges and the new friends she made.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 18, in the bandstand area at Paonia Town Park. Bring your four-legged friends to help celebrate.

M. Shreeves died Mon-day, May 30, 2016, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. She was 86.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 3, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta with Pastor Will Pruett offici-ating. Interment followed at Mesa View Cemetery.

Mrs. Shreeves was born in Nebraska Feb. 23, 1930, to Harlan and Louisa (Baumfalk) White. She spent her childhood in Atwood, Kan.

She moved to Eckert in 1945 and to Sidney, Mont., from 1977 to 1989. She lived for many years in Escalante Canyon, eventually making her way to Delta.

On Jan. 9, 1951, she married Joseph Shreeves in Delta.

She was a member of Delta Christian Church and a 50-plus-year mem-ber of Independent Order of Odd Fellows’ Rebekahs. She enjoyed crocheting, making dolls and work-ing puzzle books.

Mrs. Shreeves is sur-vived by a daughter, Alice Shreeves of Delta; her sons, Dennis Shreeves of Delta and Donald (Juli) Shreeves of Tempe, Ariz.; a brother, Charles (Shir-ley) White of Murfrees-boro, Tenn.; two sisters, Mary (Steve) Stephenson of Illinois and Jennie Styles of Las Vegas, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; a daughter, Lil-lie Grayson; and five siblings, Wilbur, Walter, Louis, Donald and Shir-ley.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by four sons, Rodney (Teri) Thompson of Culver, Kan., Russell (Peggy) Thompson, Den-nis (Elizabeth) Thomp-

son, all of Montrose, and Gary Thompson of Delta; a daughter, Carla Thomp-son of Delta; 19 grand-children; 31 great-grand-children; and two great-great-grandchildren.

HopeWest received perfect results for the sec-ond consecutive time on an unannounced, onsite survey of hospice organi-zations conducted every three years by the Health Facilities Division of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Envi-ronment (CDPHE).

“We are thrilled to have received notice that no deficiencies were cited for our survey,” said Terri Walter, chief administra-tive officer and senior vice president. “It is not unusual for a hospice to receive deficiencies from a survey and this shows the tremendous effort on the part of all staff to provide excellent care in the framework of the necessary regulations. We feel that this level of quality in care really sets us apart from other hospices.”

CDPHE is the state survey agency that looks for compliance with Col-orado licensure laws as well as compliance with Medicare conditions of participation for hospice organizations in Colo-rado.

The goal of the survey is to assure the hospice is following state and fed-eral regulations — from administration organiza-tion to quality of patient care. The surveyors make visits to current patients, talk with family mem-bers and staff, review medical records, review policies and procedures and assess the hospice’s quality management pro-gram. If any deficiencies are cited by the survey-ors, the hospice must prepare a “plan of correc-tion” and a re-evaluation takes place in the near future. Results of the sur-veys become part of the public record maintained by CDPHE.

Since the inception of HopeWest in 1993, the organization has experi-enced significant growth and expansion, both pro-grammatically and geo-graphically. From approx-imately 200 families in the first year of service to more than 3,000 families currently, HopeWest con-tinues to grow to serve the community’s needs.

HopeWest serves Mesa, Montrose, Delta, Ouray and Rio Blanco counties, with the admin-istrative headquarters located in Grand Junc-tion. The organization provides comprehensive hospice, palliative care and grief-related servic-es throughout western Colorado through its five sites.

HopeWest is a com-munity-based 501(c)(3) organization, governed by a board of directors and founding president/CEO, Christy Whitney, RN, MSN.

HopeWest has become known for its innovations in end-of-life care direct-ed at meeting the unique needs of rural areas of the state. Touch of Care recently had three unannounced surveys by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). Touch of Care-Delta, Touch of Care-Montrose, and Touch of Care-In Home Support Services (IHSS) recently completed onsite surveys and for the second three-year-cycle in a row were all deemed deficiency free.

“Touch of Care strives to not only provide excel-lent care to our clients, but to also exceed all expec-tations in all aspects of our organization,” April Martinez, IHSS agency manager said. “We would

like to thank all of our staff in the office and out in the field who work to help at risk individuals remain independently in their homes.”

People in Cedaredge accused by a neighbor of code violations would not have to face their accuser in municipal court under a concept called “complaint plus.”

The procedure was dis-cussed by the Cedaredge Town board during its regular meet-ing on May 19. Such a process

would require an ordinance to be adopted, and there will be futher discussion at a future work session.

Under Complaint Plus trustees would become con-duits for anonymous code enforcement and animal control complaints against neighbors. If a citizen had a complaint against a neighbor but he or she did not want

to offend by filing a signed complaint, they could enlist a town trustee to make the com-plaint and to serve as a wit-ness in municipal court. The trustee would have to actually observe the situation leading to the code enforcement com-plaint, such as weeds, junk, signage, dogs, etc., and make a judgment of its validity prior to a complaint being filed.

People are reluctant to file written complaints against their neighbors and be wit-nesses against them in court, noted Police Chief Dan Sand-ers. Having a trustee file the code enforcement complaint, instead of the actual com-plainant, would conceal the complaining party’s identity, and would also deprive an accused neighbor from facing their accuser.

There was no discussion as to whether a policy of allow-ing anonymous complaints would increase or decrease the number of complaints made. But they would become the responsibility of trustees to deal with.

Chief Sanders noted that the complaint plus procedure would solve a problem found in specific areas of town where there are frequent complaints to police about code enforce-ment issues, but where neigh-bors are afraid to sign a writ-ten complaint and be a wit-ness in municipal court. The plan, if adopted, would apply to every area of the town and to all individuals.

The Cedaredge Town Board also dealt with the following matters during the meeting:

• There will be a public

ribbon cutting staged at the town’s new Sewage Treatment Plant on June 16 at 2 p.m. Directions are available from Cedaredge Town Hall.

• Trustees tabled an item scheduled for action as the matter requires further dis-cussion: an agreement for management of the town’s res-taurant business enterprise at the golf course.

• Trustees tabled a second item that was scheduled for board action, opting instead to discuss the matter further at a later date. It involved an agreement with Volunteers of America and use of the Civic Center dining room for senior meals.

• Trustees opted for further discussion of a third matter and tabled it for another meet-ing: office and storage space for the chamber of commerce.

• Trustees approved an agreement with the Surface Creek Valley Lions Club for use of Town Park facilities associated with the July 2 “American Hero Parade” event.

• Mayor Gene Welch hand-ed out more than 20 assign-ments for standing commit-tees to trustees and staff members.

Cedaredge’s third spring street festival, Celebrate Cedaredge, featured this year another round of pre-sentations for local buildings that have been included in the town’s historic register.

Brass plaques were pre-sented for the owners of three buildings to display on the outsides of their struc-tures and which indicate they have been included in the town’s historic register and Heritage Trail historic walking tour. (See related story on C2.)

One of the three buildings designated on Saturday was the Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church. The historic “stone church on the corner” is closely associated with the career of pastor and educator Rev. James Hunsicker.

The Cedaredge High

School building, built in 1920 and which has served as the middle school and now as part of the elementa-ry school, received a plaque. The building also had previ-ously been included in the state register of historic places.

And a building which served as the office and pro-duction plant for the Surface Creek Champion received designation. According to the town’s historic preserva-tion committee, it was built in 1906 by Clyde W. Brew-er who operated the paper until retirement in 1943. The building is located at 180 W. Main Street.

There were some 50 ven-dor booths set up on Main Street for this year’s event. Dozens of people browsed the area through the morn-ing and early afternoon under sunny skies as they visited with friends.

Crowning achievementPresident Barack Obama congratulates Air Force Academy 2016 graduate Michael Bar-nosky at the USAFA commencement ceremony on June 2. Michael, a Delta County resident, graduated from Cedaredge High School in 2012 where he was a high school All-American swimmer. Michael continued his swimming career as an intercollegiate athlete at the Air Force Academy. During Graduation Week, the Air Force Academy presented him with its Most Valuable Athlete for 2016 award, across all sports, stating that he had “produced one of the greatest seasons ever by a Falcon swimmer.” He placed third in the nation at the NCAA Division 1 championships in the 100 breaststroke, earning him collegiate All-American honors. He also qualified for the US Olympic Trials, was named Western Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year, led the Air Force team to its first ever conference swim championship, and set numerous league, Air Force, and all-service acad-emy swim records. Michael started his swim career at the Bill Heddles Recreation Center, where he swam for the Delta Barracudas swim team. At the Air Force Academy gradua-tion week officer commissioning ceremonies, Michael chose to take his commission as an ensign in the United States Navy, and is scheduled to begin pilot training at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla., later this summer.

Roy Martin and David Starr opened the Chapel of the Cross 2016 concert season on June 2 with an hour-long performance of 14 songs.

The pair, who together have entertained local audiences for years, enliv-ened their concert with lots of good-natured ban-ter and kidding around as they sang and played their amplified acoustic guitars, performing origi-nal songs and some popu-lar covers.

They performed a number written by Mar-tin, “Wild Country,” that recalled the feelings and memories of growing up and camping in the West-ern landscapes with his father, a biologist.

A song written by Starr

for a grandson, “You Will Come to Know” was also on the pair’s concert play list. Starr dedicated two of the songs to his wife, Cindy, who was in the front row for the perfor-mance.

A song that has come to be identified with Martin, “Home Grown Tomatoes” written by Guy Clark, was also part of the per-

formance in a sing-along format with the audience participating.

And they performed music by the Eagles, one of Starr’s personal favor-ite bands.

The chapel concert series will continue with performances on Sunday afternoons at 4 p.m. and Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. through Aug. 28.

A new, full-color bro-chure detailing the

Cedaredge Heritage Trail historic walking tour has been published and is available from

the Surface Creek Val-ley Historical Society at the Pioneer Town visi-tors’ center, and at the Surface Creek Chamber of Commerce office.

The brochure contains a map and 18 of the town’s historic buildings as included in the town’s historic register. While most of the buildings listed could be part of a walking tour of the town, some require a vehicle trip from Cedaredge to see. For example, the Eckert Presbyterian Church and the Stolte home north of town on Highway 65.

The brochure gives a brief thumbnail sketch of the building’s history and significance to the area’s development. The names and roles of local historic personages are also included in some instances.

Anyone wanting to take the tour is advised that some of the his-toric places are private property and private residences, so please be respectful of that fact.

The brochure includes a short historical sketch of the development of Cedaredge from 1892 to the present. The his-torical outline concludes,

“Beginning in 1980, a handful of enthusias-tic and energetic citi-zens formed the Surface Creek Valley Historical Society to begin work cre-ating the Pioneer Town Museum. On nearly five acres of the former Bar I ranch, it is now com-prised of 25 buildings that are either original to the area and were moved to Pioneer Town, or authentic reproduc-tions. All of the artifacts in the buildings are of the area and period from the 1880s to about the 1950s.”

The Plant & Dig Gar-den Club of Cedaredge enjoyed the activity of planting large pots in the courtyard at Horizons Care Center for its May meeting.

Members of our club met at Mile High Green-house first and purchased flowers. Once again this year Mile High’s owner, Phillip Espinoza, gave us a big discount. His generosity is greatly appreciated, not only by this club, but all clubs who participate in this project. Thank your, Mr. Espinoza, from all of us!

While some members planted the courtyard pots, others cleaned up the grounds, weeded and added flowers to the tri-angular bed where the two wings come together, making it beautiful, as well. This is a project that we all enjoy, espe-cially when residents join us. This year Marge Keep, an active mem-ber for many years in Cedaredge’s gardening circles, helped out in the planting of the pot and perimeter beds. Her par-ticipation made it spe-cial. Thank you, Marge, for your help.

readied the flower bed outside the west entrance of the Pioneer Town Welcome Center for the upcoming tourist sea-son. It is already beau-tiful with many bloom-ing perennials and will be even more so when the many seeds that were planted begin to bloom. We enjoy making visitors smile as they start their tours through this his-toric site. That is what gardening is all about.

The club’s meet-ing next month, sched-uled for June 17, will be held at the home of Joan Chambers. She will present a program on the uses and variet-ies of groundcover and conduct a tour through her garden to show how she utilizes this valuable asset throughout her own garden.

I am back after suf-fering through knee replacement surgery and physical therapy. Not that I am fully recovered nor without pain. But garden chores must go on. What has been disturbing is how fast weeds appear and how quickly grass can grow to two feet tall!

This column will cover a little bit of this and that. First let’s address our Siberian Elms. While not my favorite tree, we do have a lot of them and they are tenacious survivors. After what appeared to be a record production of seed, these elms have been slow to leaf out. Never fear, they will fill out and look normal in a few weeks. An earli-er sudden temperature drop may have been responsible for this delay.

If you live where junipers and pinions are prevalent then you may have been overwhelmed last year by all the tiger moth caterpillars crawl-ing over your house, walks and driveway. This was not a simple localized infestation but an area-wide epizootic. I have received calls from several individuals

who have sighted this insect this spring and wor-ried we were in for anoth-er round of this pestilence. I, too, saw some around my yard, but I am not expecting a repeat of last year’s problem.

Weeds are what are on my mind now. As you might expect, I am very behind in my weeding chores. And with a recov-ering knee it is difficult and tiring to weed for very long. First let’s talk cheatgrass, also known as downy brome. It has already flowered and produced seed for next year’s crop. While easy to pull up, I’d rather not have to. So to mini-mize having to weed next year, apply a pre-emerge herbicide, such as Preen, during the second half of August. Cheat grass seed ger-minates in late summer and early fall, not in the spring.

Having finished weed-ing my buffalo grass lawn, I was reminded of something I had noticed several years ago when I lived in Texas. Weeds in lawns are often associated with a rock underneath their crown. Remove these rocks and maybe you won’t have as many lawn weeds.

Of course your neigh-bor’s dandelion-infested lawn is another source

of your weed problems. Maybe you can gently talk them into using a pre-emerge herbicide in the early spring or a post emergence herbicide once they appear, and before their seed blows all over your yard.

Another source of weeding headaches can be some of your prized plants. I can tell you from personal experi-ence that cone flowers, blanket flowers, rab-bitbrush, Plains Sage, Apache Plume, Rus-sian Sage and even hummingbird mint are prolific seed produc-ers. There are others of course. You can either not use plants that pro-duce lots of volunteers, put down a pre-emerge herbicide in the spring, hand weed them or just let it go wild. Your choice!

Last but not least. I have plans of writing a series on weeds titled, “TEN MOST UNWANT-ED WEEDS” starting in the near future. These will be my selections but I realize other weeds could make the list if one wanted to expand the number to 20 or even 30. My intent is to include a picture, provide background information and then management strategies including herbicides and organic approaches with each weed column. Jim Hill MustardAlong this familiar

stretch of road there were clumps of Jim Hill Mustard last week. And here they are, still in full bloom! Another name for this common weed is Tower Mustard and it’s easy to see why. These plants have grown over the past week and now they’re over two feet tall. But I’ve seen them even taller, like four to five feet! And Jim Hill? He was a railroad magnate and these plants grew readily in the disturbed soil by the railroad tracks. They are weeds but I find them interest-ing.

First, the yellow flow-er is big enough to see — nearly half an inch broad so the six stamens are obvious and that’s a major clue to the mus-tard family. Often plants have the same number of petals and stamens, but not in mustards: four floral petals but six stamens. And with mus-tards, the seed pods come in two styles: round and flat (called a “silicle) or long and narrow (called a “silique”). On the right side of Al Schneider’s photo is a seed pod with a remnant of a faded petal. The pods can be mistaken for branches!

This tall plant comes from a taproot and when

you consider how tall it is, it becomes clear that the plant could travel a long distance if it were uprooted. And so it is. When the wind blows, the plant can become a “tumble weed.” It can be blown across the country-side and on roads where it tends to bounce along. I think it would fool most folks! So when fall arrives, you might take note of tumble weeds. They come in a variety of forms!

The plant was named by Carlos Linneaus back in 1753. His history is fascinating to me. At that time, descriptions of plants were exactly that — descriptions, and they were often lengthy. Lin-neaus set up the system that describes a plant with just two names. The first is the genus (large group name) and the second is for the indi-vidual plant. So we have Sisymbrium altissimum with Sisymbrium being an ancient Greek plant name and altissimum meaning “very tall.”

The system is still in use and I often think back to Linneaus’ time when he described human beings as Homo sapiens. People consid-ered us to be separate from other creatures and we needed a separate designation!

The public is invited to tour the Cedaredge wastewater treat-ment plant and to cel-ebrate its completion on Wednesday, June 15, at 2 p.m.

Join in the dedica-tion of the plant build-ing. It will be named the McAlpine Building, in honor of Steve McAl-

pine, who was killed Nov. 18, 2011, while returning from waste-water training.

To get there, go south (from the stop light on Main) 3.5 miles on High-way 65 to Oatman Road, go east one mile to Harts Basin Rd, north about 3/4 of a mile and turn left at the large gate.

The 44th annual Edge of the Cedars art show will be held in Cedaredge June 9-12 at Cedaredge Middle School.

The members of ESA also invite the community to meet Sandy King, the judge of this year’s event,

at the judge’s reception on June 8. King’s large, vibrant paintings have won numerous awards. She also recently opened an art gallery in Pali-sade.

Awards will be given in four categories (profes-

sional, advanced, ama-teur and student), with additional merchandise and cash awards given by many business/com-munity member spon-sors. The event has attracted a record num-ber of entries this year

with over 250 works of art to be displayed.

The judge’s reception is Wednesday, June 8, at 7 p.m. The exhibit will be open June 9-11 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and June 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Edge of Cedars exhibit is June 9-12

The day camp offered last year in Hotchkiss and Paonia was so well received, it’s being expanded to Cedaredge and Crawford.

Excited students from Houston, Texas, North-west Baptist Church gave glowing reports when they got home, and their enthusiasm caused nearly

80 high school students and a number of parents to sign up for this year’s missionary trip to Delta County.

From June 13-19, this large group will hold “Day Camp” in all four commu-nities. Camp runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.

The Cedaredge Day Camp will be held at

Grand Mesa Southern Baptist Church, at Hwy. 65 and Jay Avenue. Watch for the locations in Crawford, Hotchkiss and Paonia. Day Camp is suggested for 6- to 10-year-old students and will feature opening games, crafts, Bible study, snacks and closing games.

The mission team will

divide up into 18-20 stu-dents for each of the four locations. There is no cost for area students to attend. The Day Camp is similar to vacation Bible school which took place in the past years.

feature of Colorado water law is often blamed for discouraging farmers and ranchers from taking effi-ciency and conservation measures that could ben-efit the environment or ease the supply/demand imbalance on the Colo-rado River. However, a report released in Feb-ruary by the Colorado Water Institute argues that misinterpretations of the law are a bigger disincentive than the law itself.

The report was devel-oped as a result of in-depth discussions by a panel of stakeholders and experts that included Colorado State Engineer Dick Wolfe, who directs the office that adminis-ters water rights. Wolfe presented the report at a forum on the future of irri-gated agriculture in Delta on May 3, and Colorado River District Counsel Peter Fleming presented the report at the Mesa County State of the River meeting in Grand Junc-tion on May 13.

The report concludes that diverting more water from a stream than crops actually use does not expand a water right. In addition, the report explains that recent laws allow irrigators to cut their water consump-tion without diminishing their water rights if they are participating in cer-tain water conservation, fallowing and leasing programs. Maximizing Diversions Doesn’t Maximize Value

of a Water RightThe report notes that

while an agricultural water right may be writ-ten in terms of a certain quantity of water that can be diverted from a stream in order to irri-gate a particular parcel of land, the actual value of the water right is based on how much water is consumed by crops. A farmer who sells a water right to a city can only sell the right to use the amount that has his-torically been consumed by crops. Rights to use quantities of water that historically leaked from a ditch or otherwise seeped back into the stream can’t be sold, because oth-ers downstream may rely on that water. Efficiency improvements, like lin-ing ditches or switching from flood to sprinkler irrigation, which allows the same acreage to be irrigated with a small-er diversion from the stream, therefore should not diminish the trans-ferable value of a water right.

sion of Water Resources can put water rights on the abandonment list for

termination if the rights haven’t been used for 10 years, but the water right holders can avoid termi-nation of the rights by showing that they don’t intend to abandon them. The report states that using measuring devices and keeping good records of water diversions and use, as well as “special circumstances” such as damaged infrastruc-ture or participation in a conservation program, are more effective ways to protect a water right than maximizing diver-sions.

water right holders from having the value of their water rights diminished as a result of cuts in use through certain leasing, conservation and fallow-ing programs. These include Senate Bill 13-019, which decrees that for water rights in the Colorado, Gunnison and Yampa/White basins, decreases in use as a result of participating in federal land conservation programs or approved

water conservation, land fallowing and water banking programs for up to five years in a 10-year period won’t decrease the value of the water right. Rotational crop manage-ment programs and loan-ing or leasing water to the Colorado Water Conser-

vation Board to enhance stream flows also allow for reductions in water use without reductions in the value of a water right.

For Western Slope young producers an acad-emy will be held Saturday, June 18, at the Montrose County Fairgrounds beginning at 10 a.m.

This event will be a day of fun and learning geared toward 4-H’ers and FFA members in the swine project looking to

learn more. This year an array of topics to be dis-cussed has been selected such as nutrition, show ethics and the new veteri-nary feed directive going into effect as of January 2017.

The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gun-nison National Forests has issued a forest super-visor’s order to restrict dispersed camping in the area known as the “Goth-ic Corridor” from June 15 to Aug. 15, annually. This area includes lands adjacent to National For-est System Road (NFSR) #317 from the southern gate near Mt. Crested Butte to the Gunnison National Forest Bound-ary at Schofield Pass; and from NFSR #317 to the wilderness boundary on the west and the ridge-line on the east. Camp-ing in the Gothic Camp-ground will be allowed.

Additionally, the order prohibits motorized vehi-cle travel off designated routes in the area at any time. This restriction will be in effect year-round.

Increasingly high lev-els of use, motorized vehi-cle travel and dispersed camping within the corri-dor, as well as the area’s proximity to Crested Butte, has resulted in natural resource impacts to soils and vegetation and increased presence of trash and human waste that necessitates additional management action. Working with local government and in response to public and community concerns,

the Gunnison Ranger District enacted scoping (NEPA) to address these concerns in February and March. Over 80 com-ments were submitted in response to the proposal and the decision memo was issued on May 31, 2016.

An enforcement plan focused on information and education has been developed and the order and the associated map are available on the for-ests’ website and on file at each forest office.

Today’s library work-ers frequently struggle to overcome stereotypical images of librarians from the past. While the public is finally becoming aware that library staff does not spend all day silently reading books and shush-ing people, the prevailing image of a librarian is one sitting behind a desk or a computer, working diligently. For example, in the classic children’s books featuring the mon-key Curious George, the librarians, while surpris-ingly tolerant of animal visitors in the library, are almost always sitting down.

Delta County Librar-ies staff members would like to quash that image, proving once and for all that sitting librarians rep-resent a past era. In real-ity, library workers are constantly on their feet, shelving books, helping patrons, moving between

printers and computers, presenting programs, and emptying book drops. Even in the Delta County administrative offices, where staff work behind desks a good deal of the day, many staff members prefer to keep to their feet at standing desks.

“We are both mentally and physically tired at the end of the day,” explains Cedaredge Library man-ager Cara Morton. “But I would hesitate to trade it in, even for a job where I got to lie in bed all day.”

Instead, staff members at Delta County Libraries are taking it one step fur-ther, challenging library patrons to track their movement over the course of next week (June 13-19) to see which group walks more per person, library staff or the public. The contest is part of Delta County Libraries’ summer reading program, which focuses on health and fit-ness.

In order to participate,

patrons need to sign up in any Delta County Library. The libraries are giving away free pedometers, while supplies last, so par-ticipants can track steps or mileage, although phone apps and other devices may also be used. Par-ticipants will record the total for each day of the week on a provided form, then they should submit their final numbers online

or in person before July 1. Library staff will do the final calculations and declare the winning group in early July.

Families are encour-aged to participate togeth-er and even challenge each other. However, the contest will focus on teens and adults, with a mini-mum age of 12.

“I don’t feel like we’ll have to go too far out of

our way to get the miles for this contest,” says Hotchkiss teen librarian Sarah Pope, who works at a standing desk when she is not interacting with patrons. “I am excited to see how far we actually walk each day.”

Assistant district director LaDonna Gunn agrees. “I just want to warn our patrons,” she laughs. “We will be track-

ing our steps in and out of the libraries, and many of us have pretty active lives in our free time. If you see me out running or hiking that week, you better try to keep up!”

Interested patrons should “book it” to the library to sign up right away. Library staff mem-bers clearly have some-thing to prove this sum-mer.

Volunteers of America is commemorating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day by inviting residents and their family mem-bers, as well as members of the community, to an informational meeting with the area’s ombuds-man on Wednesday, June 15, 9 a.m. in the commons at Horizons Healthcare & Retirement Commu-nity. Horizons is located at 11411 Highway 65 in Eckert.

The ombudsman’s role is to oversee qual-ity of care and advocate for residents of long term care facilities throughout a six-county region under Region 10 Community Living Services.

Every year an estimat-ed five million, or one in 10, older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. And that’s only part of the picture: Experts believe that for every case

of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23.5 cases go unreported.

Elder abuse can come in several forms — neglect, financial abuse or exploitation, psychologi-cal or emotional abuse, or physical or sexual abuse. If you or an older adult you know is in a life threatening situation or immediate danger, con-tact the local sheriff or police department.

WEAAD serves as a call-to-action for indi-viduals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about abuse, neglect and exploitation of elders. The Interna-tional Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations (UN) launched the first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15, 2006, to raise aware-ness about elder abuse.

Prep sports are offi-cially completed, for Delta County schools, following the recent conclusion of last weekend’s Class 2A baseball championships in Pueblo.

There are many activi-ties which may be enjoyed by athletes and specta-tors in surrounding com-munities. The range of activities begin at Rookie/Coach Pitch and T-ball up through adult soft-ball leagues conducted at Mountain View Park in Delta.

Many summer sports activities are underway, with some baseball pro-grams nearing the begin-ning of all-star competi-tion.

Delta Recreation and Parks programs are cur-rently involved with games in baseball and softball offered Monday through Friday through-out the North Fork Val-ley.

Five Machine Pitch/Rookies’ teams are in the early stages of seasons, which began on June 3 and are slated to end on July 1. Four Delta teams, and one Olathe squad, play on Monday and Friday at sites in Delta (Confluence Park: Yellow and Black Fields) and in Olathe at Lions Park East. Games begin at 5:30 and 6:30 on game days at each site.

There are 11 T-Ball teams playing on Tues-day and Thursday of each week. Their season began on June 2 and concludes on July 30.

Games for T-Ball play are scheduled for sites

(Confluence Park; Yel-low and Black Fields and Olathe’s Sweet Corn Park). Game times for these contests begin at 5:30 p.m. each day with play continuing at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. on sched-uled days.

One of the shorter seasons of the summer involves girls who play U-8 Little Ladies soft-ball. Their season began on June 1 (Wednesday). Games for this division are played on Monday and Wednesday begin-ning at 5:30 p.m. Second games of the day, when scheduled, are set for 6:30 p.m. Two Delta teams and one Cedaredge (Surface Creek) team make up this league. Games are played at either Conflu-ence Park in Delta or at Surface Creek’s Field of Dreams.

June 29 marks the end of play for the U-8 Little Ladies season.

Seven teams make up the U-10 Little Ladies division. This league began its league schedule on May 17 and is sched-uled to end July 30.

Teams from Delta (three teams), Cedaredge (Surface Creek - two teams), Gunnison and Hotchkiss comprise the U-10 Little Ladies League. Games in Delta are slated to be played at Conflu-ence Park fields. Games in Hotchkiss are set for play at the Hotchkiss Dust Bowl while Sur-face Creek home games are scheduled for Field of Dreams. Gunnison’s home schedule will be played at Jorgensen Field in Gunnison.

All games in U-10 play are scheduled for 5:30, 6, 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. depend-ing on the game site.

Five teams, from Delta, Cedaredge and Gunnison, play in the U-12 Little Ladies League. This sea-son began on May 16 and runs through June 29 on Mondays and Wednes-days. Times for games are scheduled for 5:30, 6, 6:30, 7 or 7:30 p.m. depending on location.

Sites utilized for this league include Delta’s Confluence Park, Cedar-edge’s Field of Dreams, Olathe’s Sugar Beet Field and Gunnison’s Jor-gensen Field.

Delta, Cedaredge, Hotchkiss and Gunni-son have teams playing in this year’s U-14 Little Ladies League.

Games played in the U-14 division have start

times of 5:30, 6, 6:30 and 7 p.m., depending on game site, on Mondays and Wednesdays. Sites for games include Con-fluence Park and Moun-tain View (Delta home games), Hotchkiss Dust Bowl, Field of Dreams (Surface Creek home games) and Gunnison’s Jorgensen Field.

The only schedules available for boys’ base-ball is the 16U division. Many of the younger divi-sions are nearing season end and are preparing for all-star seasons.

In the 16U division, five teams are sched-uled to face off in con-tests slated for June 6 through June 30. Delta’s season kicked off with games against Montrose on Monday, June 6.

Delta faces Rifle (at DMS) on June 8 for dou-bleheader play beginning at 5 and 7 p.m. The Pan-thers are in Fruita for doubleheader play at 4 and 6 p.m. on Thursday and travel to Rifle for 5 and 7 p.m. games on

Monday, June 13.Games on June 15

are set for 4 and 6 p.m. starts against Central at Delta Middle School. Delta hosts a portion of a Montrose tournament on June 17, 18 and 19. Delta is scheduled to host Grand Junction (June 20, 4 p.m.), travels to Fruita on June 21 for double-header action (4 and 6 p.m.) and is in Grand Junction for a double-header against Central (4 and 6 p.m.) on June 22.

A 16U tournament, set for June 28-30, will mark the end of the season.

Adult softball play (at Mountain View Park) is well underway. Games began in early May for four divisions of play on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Monday’s Silver Coed play began on May 9 with season-ending tour-nament play scheduled for July 25. Games in this division are played at Mountain View Park (Black and Red Fields) with hourly game times

set at 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m.Ten teams make up

the Monday Silver Coed league.

Tuesday’s Gold Coed league has five teams playing on the Black and Red Fields with starting times of 6:30 and 7 p.m.

Games in the Gold Coed league run from May 10 through the end of June (tournament starts June 28).

Two leagues, Men’s and Women’s Slowpitch, are played on Thursday nights at Mountain View. Both seasons began on May 12 and season-end-ing tourna-ment play is slated to begin on July 7.

Wom-en’s play is played on the Black and Green Fields at Mountain

View with games sched-uled for 6:30-8:30 p.m. each Thursday.

Men’s action is set for 6:30-8:30 p.m. each Thursday and is to be played on the Black, Green and Red Fields throughout the season. Teams will play double-headers in given weeks with eight teams battling for a championship each week.

The men’s season-end-ing tournament is slated to begin July 7.

Whitnee Lear of Bill Heddles Recreation Center has released an announcement for this year’s Colorado Rockies’ Skills Challenge.

This free baseball skills competition is held at Confluence Communi-ty Fields in Delta for boys and girls ages 6-13. Age is determined as of Decem-ber 31, 2016, for boys’ and girls’ divisions (6/7, 8/9, 10/11 and 12/13).

Competition in three

skills (running, batting and throwing) will begin at 10 a.m.

Registration will be on the morning of the competition beginning at 9:30 a.m. on the Conflu-ence Community Fields. A birth certificate is required at time of regis-tration to advance to the sectional competition.

A ball got past the infield last week and a new game, “The race for the ball,” marked the attention of these four players. Often, as many as four or more give chase in a race for the ball.

This year’s track and field athletes from Delta County have prov-en themselves beyond a doubt. Many have achieved goals set prior to commencing their track season.

With Delta County track championships being earned in both boys’ and girls’ compe-titions, a large number of outstanding athletes were selected for all-state accolades.

According to Cedaredge High School head track coach Kirby Hender-son, there are basically two ways athletes may be selected to all-state teams.

Colorado MileSplit is one organization which has selected coaches from around the state who vote for 20 athletes per classi-fication per gender; 20 Class 1A boys, 20 Class 1A girls, and on through the Class 5A classifica-tion. Of those 20 selected, every state champion is

an automatic placement. The remaining selections are athletes, who in the opinion of those select coaches, are deserving of the award. Cedaredge’s Bryce Klaseen and Pao-nia’s Jeramiah Hillman are examples of this pro-cess. There are more who may possibly earn simi-lar selections as a more detailed list is released.

The second method of earning all-state honors is through MaxPreps/CHSAA. This organiza-tion bases its selections solely on the state cham-pions for each event throughout the five state classifications.

There is a short list for Colorado MileSplit at this time. On that list are Lily Lockhart of Delta (shot put) and Cedar-edge’s Shane Gates (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and high jump) and Bryce Klaseen (sprints and relays).

Paonia’s Jeramiah Hillman is also on the boys’ list.

CHSAA is more compre-hensive. At the 4A level is Delta’s Lockhart (shot put).

Paonia’s state cham-pion team has several girls listed, mostly from its stellar relay teams.

The 4x200 relay team members honored include senior Marisa Edmond-son, junior Emily Pieper, junior Brianna Van Vleet and sophomore Shira Woods.

Members from the 4x400 relay team so hon-ored include sophomore Randi Rapke, Brianna Van Vleet, senior Ash-ley Van Vleet and Shira Woods.

The all-state 4x800 relay team members include sophomore Brooke Hillman, fresh-man Poppy Lightfoot, senior Chelsea Meilner and Randi Rapke.

Paonia’s 800 sprint medley relay team also was an all-state selection. Members of that team include Marisa Edmond-son, Emily Pieper, sopho-more Kassidy Rapke and

Shira Woods.Individual all-state

selections went to Bri-anna Van Vleet in long jump, and Ashley Van Vleet was honored for her win in the high jump competition.

The Cedaredge Bru-ins’ 4x100 relay team broke several records in 2016, including the state record, to earn all-state status for 2016. Mem-bers of the winning team include junior Shayna Dale, senior Kenzie Hen-derson, senior Amber Jenkins and senior Ken-dall McHugh.

Sophomore Katie Hyke is also on both 2016 all-state lists (MaxPreps and Colorado MileSplit) with her individual victory in shot put.

Hotchkiss senior Katy Parsons gained all-state honors for her win in the 800-meter run.

On the boys’ side, Cedaredge’s Shane Gates was an all-state athlete in the 110 meter high hurdles, 300 meter hur-dles and the high jump.

S urrounded by impos-sibly large buildings, cheered on by masses

of spectators, and support-ed from thousands of miles away by their hometown, the Cedaredge High School Music Department marched down historic Constitution Avenue blasting the school fight song. After three days of tour-ing the nation’s most iconic monuments and performing with other music programs from around the country, Cedaredge High School stu-dents closed their adventure with the honor of a lifetime — marching in the Nation-al Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C.

The community came together to fundraise more than $60,000 to send the music students to the nation’s capitol over Memorial Day. Students who had never been outside the Western Slope of Colorado toured the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monu-ment, the capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, and per-formed in the center of the Air Force Memorial.

Niala Stair, sophomore, shares her wonder at the experience. “I kept thinking about how bands from across the U.S. met at one place to share their passion for music with the audience.” She adds, “I was also thinking about how hot it was and how much I wanted to get out of the

humidity!” All the Colorado students struggled to transi-tion into the vastly different climate and new culture.

The parade down his-toric Constitution Avenue featured floats, military bands and groups, and high school marching bands from every state in the country. Cedaredge included the choir in this performance after teaching the singers how to march and carry flags during evening rehearsals.

Noah LaVau, recent gradu-ate, describes what he learned after marching with the band. “Marching is a full-body exer-cise that literally drained all the energy I had in my body, and I wasn’t even playing an instrument. I have such a greater respect for those who do it hours at a time.”

In addition to marching in the parade, both groups per-formed individually at the Air Force Memorial as part of the National Memorial Day Concert Series. The choir also performed impromptu con-certs in parks and on the plane ride home.

While in D.C., the depart-ment enjoyed a tour from Music Celebrations Interna-tional. Every student loved both the tour guide, Maria, and the bus driver, Jessie. The bus was filled with laughter and minds being filled with new knowledge about Amer-ica’s military and traditions. Jacob Small, graduated choir member, shares his enlighten-ment upon seeing the nation’s

monuments. “When I visited the memorials I truly under-stood the meaning of patrio-tism and what it meant to be an American.”

Although many friends and family members recorded the performances, no amount of photos or words can describe the incredible experience each student went through. Every-one returned as a different person. Graduated seniors enjoyed their last times with the music program while incoming freshmen were granted an enormous boost to start their high school careers. Director Melissa Gross reflects on the incredible journey. “I

couldn’t be more proud of the work and effort the students put forth to make the trip a reality; they acted with poise, dignity, and a stoic nature befitting that of a professional delegation representing their state and community. Their experiences and actions were conducted with a maturity far beyond their years. I would like to thank the community of Cedaredge, Delta County, and the state of Colorado for this once-in-a-lifetime oppor-tunity. The experiences and memories attained through this adventure will remain with the students and myself always!”
