IdemoLab + Design Electronic Sketching creates Tangible Understanding

Why IdemoLab? IdemoLab bridges the gap between new technology and new experiences for customers by focusing on the early stages of the design process and using electronics to try new ideas immediately.

Before embarking on a new project we work with the customer to create a base of knowledge and insights. We do this in collaboration with stakeholders such as end users or manufacturers. This is used to create new ideas and concepts, merging user experiences, technologies and market insights to develop better products and experiences within design. We work in many domains; so we can apply our knowledge to each new project we embark on.

Outcome

We create early and agile mapping of concepts, technologies and stakeholder input, resulting in tangible manifestations of ideas (Electronic Sketches).

The resulting Electronic Sketches facilitate understanding and discussions of possible future products. Using our Toolbox of methods we can anticipate and reveal user needs and corresponding technologies, creating disruptive innovations. The outcome is a series of ideas, derived from extensive investigations and iterative design, which can help define future investments. We do this with end-users and others, such as patients to explore potential interactions.

Competencies

IdemoLab has a unique combination of technology and design competencies making us especially proficient with using electronics as a design material.

We’ve worked extensively with the design process through our work in Interaction and Experience design. Many of our projects focus on everyday objects including furniture, toys, room-specific solutions and wearables. Our knowledge in these areas is combined with our expertise in electronics to create a new and intriguing rendezvous between the two. Furthermore, as facilitors of the design process, we strive to utilize all stakeholders’ knowledge in projects to gain the best insight before moving forwards.

Designing with Electronics We use electronics as a design material, just as some use wood, cotton, glass or other materials. We explore the properties of electronics and what they can mean in people’s lives. Similarly, we merge electronics with traditional design materials to explore new possibilities.

There are key activities which are typically conducting when doing Electronic Sketching for design. These help us to understand the domain, generate new ideas and evaluate existing ideas.

Key Activities

· Mapping of current technologies, practices and scenarios within lifestyle products or products of a high aesthetic value.

· Mapping of the daily lives of stakeholders including their use of, and experience with, current products and competitor’s products.

· Through interviews, role playing, and bodystorming, we help stakeholders, including professional designers, end users and manufacturers to express their wishes and wants.

· We conduct workshops with explorative idea-generation for both

service and technology ideation. · We are specialized in helping non-

technical people include or think about technological possibilities.

· We build more intricate sketches with interactive elements to explore concept and user-experience.

· Together with customers, we select the most promising concepts and iteratively develop new concepts, all the while taking into consideration possible regulatory issues.

FAQs

Will the process result in fabrication-ready product-designs? No. The process can result in finished concepts and functional interaction designs. Following that, design for manufacturing can be carried through in collaboration with us and other partners, specializing in the fitting production-

methods, or technologies in questions.

What about aesthetics?

Typically, we do not include aesthetics or industrial design in our process, for the specific reason that rough designs generate more input, and our process is aimed at facilitating dialogue and evaluation of Electronic Sketches so we can design them better during each iteration.

Creating tangible mockups for generative exploration of ideas. co-creation and Exploration

Brainstorming around objects we design hand in hand with customers to engage

fully in a co-creation process.
