Ella Harris celebrated her 108thbirthday last Friday surrounded byfamily and friends at KinVillagein Tsawwassen.
Born in Watford, England in1902, Harris, who lives at theretirement centre in Tsawwassen, came to Canada with her parentsat a young age.
Aside from some hip andhearing issues, Harris is in goodhealth and credits her longevity toa positive attitude.
After going through a difficultperiod during the Depression, shemade a decision to be happy andpositive, no matter what hand lifedealt her.
She is believed to be the secondoldest person in the province.
Civic officials headed to IndiaArmed with a video and bro-
chure promoting the area, a del-egation from the Corporation ofDelta is heading to India later thisweek in an attempt to forge eco-nomic ties with a city there.
Earlier this year, Delta enteredinto a twin city relationship withMangalore.
Delta council approved the idealast year to take advantage of theprovince’s Asia-Pacific Initiative. At the time, a city hadn’t been
selected, but the civic tourismadvisory committee recommendeda city in India be chosen for theinitiative.
Planning director Sean McGilltold the Optimist earlier this yearthat Mangalore was selectedbecause it has many similaritiesto Delta.
“We were looking for a citythat had similar economic inter-ests. It is a port city, it has a localairport and lots of agriculture,”he said.
The chief port city of the Indianstate of Karnataka, Mangalore has
a population of around 432,000,making it the 101st most populouscity in India.
Agricultural processing andport-related activities dominateMangalore’s economy. The NewMangalore Port is India’s ninthlargest in terms of cargo handling.
On Friday, Mayor Lois Jackson, chief administrative officerGeorge Harvie and administrativemanager Manjit Kaila will leaveDelta for India.
It’s a long journey, whichincludes a 13-hour flight fromVancouver to Hong Kong and
a seven-hour flight from HongKong to Bangalore, India.
The trio will spend part of aday in Bangalore meeting withthe B.C. Trade and InvestmentOffice there as well as taking atour of International Tech ParkLimited, before a one-hour flightto Mangalore.
Once in Mangalore, the delega-tion has three busy days planned— including meeting with thecity’s mayor, local press, the porttrust, Mangalore InternationalAirport and Manipal Academyof Higher Education — before
returning home next Friday.“This is the first step in the
process of establishing relations inMangalore and exploring opportu-nities for economic partnerships,”McGill stated in a report to coun-cil Monday night.
The municipality received a$50,000 grant from the provincefor the trip.
The total cost of the trip is bud-geted at $64,475.
“We’re very much lookingforward to it and... there are eco-nomic opportunities, I believe,”Jackson said.

Gaudry facing another sex chargeFormer bureaucrat, who resigned after child porn charges here, taken to Winnipeg to face new allegation
The former Delta bureau-crat who resigned after apolice investigation intochild pornography allega-tions is facing an additionalsex-related charge in anoth-er province.
Kip Gaudry, who wasDelta’s director of engineer-ing when he resigned inMarch 2009, is now facinga charge of indecent assaultinvolving an underage girlstemming from an incidentthat occurred in Winnipeg
dating back to the summerof 1973.
Gaudry, 59, who nowlives in White Rock, wasarrested last month andtransported to Winnipegto face the charge. He washeld in custody for severaldays before being releasedon $3,000 bail on Sept. 21.
Gaudry was releasedwith several conditions: thathe return to his White Rockhome; stay away from anypublic park or swimmingpool where anyone underthe age of 14 is present, orexpected to be present; stay
away from daycare centres, schools, playgrounds andcommunity centres; not bein the company of anyoneunder the age of 14 unlessanother adult is present;and, not be in possession ofa computer or any devicewith Internet access.
Gaudry is also facingchild pornography chargeshere at home.
In March 2009, Deltapolice searched Gaudry’soffice at municipal hallas well as his North Deltahome. Computers and othertechnical equipment were
seized in the raid.He was suspended with-
out pay before resigning afew days later.
He stands charged withpossession of child por-nography and accessingchild pornography. He wasreleased on $10,000 bail atthat time.
He is scheduled to beback in Surrey ProvincialCourt later this month toset a date for trial on thosecharges. He is scheduled toappear in a Winnipeg court-room again on Dec. 14.
Gaudry was hired by
Delta in 2001 and wasnamed head of the engi-neering department justa few months before thepolice raid. Before that heserved as director of com-munity planning.
He has a history ofsexual offences. In 1995,Gaudry pleaded guiltyto nine charges of sexualassault involving teenagedgirls while district admin-istrator in Houston in west-central B.C.
The assaults took placebetween 1986 and 1994.He was sentenced to three
years in prison by a PrinceGeorge judge.
Delta police were able tonip a possible ATM fraudattempt in Ladner in thebud thanks to an alert wit-ness.
On Sunday, threeHispanics — two malesand one female — wereseen tampering with a bankmachine in the 5100-blockof 48th Avenue.
A witness saw the trioplacing an electronic deviceover the ATM keypad andimmediately called thepolice.
The three suspects weregone by the time officersarrived at the scene. Thearea was checked but offi-cers were unable to locatethe suspects.
The device, which had apinhole camera with a viewof the keypad, was seizedfor forensic analysis.
Bids by companies want-ing to land municipal con-tracts won’t be kept fromthe public.
Delta council recentlyreversed a new policy qui-etly started by civic staff toonly show preferred bids.
“I’m here to protect ourtaxpayers, not businesses,”Mayor Lois Jackson said.
Coun. Anne Petersonagreed, saying companiesmaking bids for public
contracts are in the pub-lic realm, so every effortshould be made to ensuretransparency.
Civic politicians raisedquestions as to why only thesuccessful bid was shownfor a project involvingwatermain upgrades valuedat $93,000.
Finance director KarlPreuss told council thatcompanies don’t want togive an unfair advantage totheir competitors by reveal-ing what they’re bidding onand for how much.
Coun. Scott Hamiltonsaid disclosing all bidscould discourage companiesfrom making submissions, thus the number of bidscould go down and pricescould potentially move upas a result.
At a subsequent councilmeeting, a report on theissue stated bid informationis governed by the Freedomof Information andProtection of Privacy Act,aimed at creating transpar-ent government processeswhile protecting bidders
from harmful release oftheir confidential material.
The report noted inrecentyearssomemunici-palitieshave onlyreleasedthecontract award amount, although historically thepractice for constructiontenders has been to releaseall the bids.
Delta’s practice had been
to show all bids and the“overall best value,” whichdoesn’t necessarily result
in the lowestpriced bidderbeing awarded acontract.
Any munici-pal contractexceed-ing $50,000
requires council’s approval, but the initial staff report onthe watermain consultantcontract didn’t list the 10other firms that bid on thejob.

Delta’s newest councillor, Ian Paton, takes the Oath of Office and Oath of Allegiance as he is sworn in Monday night by provincial court judge, and longtime Ladnerresident, Kimberley Arthur-Leung. Paton won last month’s by-election to replace the late George Hawksworth. After being sworn in Paton took his place at the counciltable to participate in his first meeting.

Intersections planned forthe South Fraser PerimeterRoad in Delta could be dan-gerous locations, say localofficials.
“Priority one should besafety. One of the highestcrash incident intersectionsin the Lower Mainland isthe (Highway) 91 and 72nd(Avenue) because it’s notreally effective in the for-mat it’s in right now,” saidCoun. Anne Peterson.
A four-way intersectionis to be built at 80th Street, near the Delta CommunityAnimal Shelter in Tilbury, while another is to be builtnear Nordel Way and RiverRoad in Sunbury.
A recent report to Deltacouncil notes staff had notseen revised concept designdrawings for the SFPR, butthe government informedDelta the Sunbury and 80thStreet locations will beintersections, whereas theHighway 17 and Highway99 connections will remainas interchanges.
At a recent Delta coun-cil meeting, Coun. ScottHamilton said the munici-pality’s position has alwaysbeen that those locationsshould be interchanges, because the intersectionscould be “a recipe for disas-ter.”
CAO George Harvie saidthe safety concerns wouldbe raised at an upcom-ing meeting with GatewayProgram officials.
The report to councilnotes the province acquiredsufficient land to allow theSunbury and 80th Streetintersections to be upgradedto interchanges “when traf-fic volumes warrant.”
A spokesperson withMinistry of Transportationand Highways told theOptimist traffic studies
found those intersectionscould accommodate theanticipated opening daytraffic volumes. The projecthas acquired and preloadedproperty for future inter-change construction.
Peterson, however, saidit would make sense toconstruct the interchangesnow rather than take on theadditional expense in whatcould be the not too distantfuture
“It had always beenintended to be interchanges. To turn it into intersectionsat this late date and saythey’ll do something in 20years when capacity callsfor it isn’t good enough. If you’re going to build it,build it right the first time.
“Back when they builtthe (Highway) 91 and theAlex Fraser (Bridge), theyhad all sorts of intersec-tions coming on and off thebridge. Within six monthsthey had to change that andmake them interchangesand change the configura-tion to remove the lights, because it was creating sucha havoc,” she added.
Delta forwarded the con-cerns to ICBC for review,Peterson said.
The South FraserPerimeter Road will bea four-lane, 40-kilome-tre highway extendingnortheast of the existingHighway 17/Deltaport Wayintersection to highways 1,91 and 99 and the GoldenEars Bridge.
This summer the gov-ernment announced ithad entered into a design, build, finance and opera-tion agreement with FraserTransportation Group. Theconstruction cost is $658million.
The completion date forthe South Fraser PerimeterRoad project has beenpushed back a year to theend of 2013.

Next year will be pivotalfor Delta Global CampusLtd., according to the boardof the Delta school district’sfor-profit company.
Established by the Deltaschool board two years ago,Delta Global Campus issupposed to be a revenuegenerator for a districtthat’s been busy hunting fornew sources of money asit grapples with decliningenrollment. The school dis-trict is the sole shareholder.
The company’s board ofdirectors held its secondannual general meeting latelast month at the district’sadministration offices, where nobody from thepublic attended except theDelta Optimist.
According to the compa-ny’s 2009/10 annual report,Delta Global Campus Ltd.lost $1,957, although it stillhas over $2,500 remainingin retained earnings.
The company special-izes in selling what it callsChallenge Exams to over-seas students that want tograduate with a B.C. cur-riculum and are looking forcourse credit. The studentscan write those exams in anumber of subjects beforearriving here when theybecome international stu-dents.
Because school boardsare no longer permitted tobankroll their companies, the Delta entity got its seedmoney by selling a softwareprogram for online examscreated by company presi-
dent Brent Koot.Koot wasn’t able to
attend the AGM, whichhad chairperson LoisWilkinson and directorsPeter Podovinikoff, JoeStrain and Simon Truelovein attendance.
Truelove, a schooltrustee, said at the schoolboard’s meeting the previ-ous week the volunteercompany board is “an out-standing group” but it was“sad that it hasn’t producedmore results, but not for alack of trying.”
Strain, the district’s sec-retary treasurer, went oversome of the challenges thecompany faced during apresentation at the AGM.
“We’ve always been clearour mandate was to developa positive revenue streamfor the school district and
ultimately it’s students with-out creating a financial lia-bility. Further, unlike somebusiness companies in thepast, more recent legislationdoes not allow the districtto lend or give money, sowe operate solely withinour own financial means.
“We really look to thiscoming year as being awatershed year for us andwe have every reason tobelieve we’ll see some sig-nificant sales of ChallengeExams.”
One of the challenges,Strain said, is finding quali-fied overseas companiesthat can partner with thedistrict. Two have beenfound so far.
Also, due to the eco-nomic downturn, fewerinternational students havecome to B.C., which has
meant fewer students want-ing to take exams to getcredit, particularly thosefrom Asian nations.
“School district interna-tional programs are diversi-fying throughout the worldand the Delta school dis-trict, for example, has seena large growth in studentsfrom Europe,” Strain said.
“However, a lot of thesestudents are not looking
to graduate from the B.C.school system. Instead, they’re coming for a one-year cultural experienceand improve their Englishlanguage competency. Thisisn’t the market that will beattracting the ChallengesExams,” he said.
Strain noted the companyhopes to see significantgrowth in the number ofstudents in China permitted
to study abroad. It also anticipates signifi-
cant interest overseas onceit gets the word out, andthat’s where a more inten-sive marketing effort willcome into play.
The company plans topartner with a B.C. firm inmarketing the exams.
Wilkinson said they’reoptimistic heading into theirthird year.

Ladner’s Dylan Krugersays he’s looking forwardto being a part of GatewayTheatre’s upcoming pro-duction of Brighton BeachMemoirs.
“I think it’s hilarious, it’sa comedy. It’s a coming ofage story and I’m superexcited about it,” he says.
The 15-year-old playsEugene Jerome, a charac-ter Kruger describes as animaginative teen that wantsto be a writer or baseballplayer but gets caught up infamily chaos.
“What’s really cool aboutEugene is that he’s almostthe same age as me. He’sturning 15 and I’m 15.He’s going through theseproblems in his life thatare [about] him growingup, him transitioning froma child to an adult, whichI can relate to in a lot ofways,” says Kruger. “Hetalks about ... sports, writ-ing, girls, his parents. It’sall very relatable so I really, really fell for the character.”
The play is set in 1937Brooklyn and follows the
Jerome family as theystruggle through the thinyears in post-DepressionAmerica, a press releasestates.
“Every show this year is
about family in some way,”says Gateway’s artisticdirector Simon Johnston inthe release. “Although thisplay is about a Jewish fam-ily in Brooklyn, the themes
could apply to any family, anytime, anywhere.”
Brighton Beach Memoirs, written by Neil Simon, isa comedy although it dealswith “sometimes-weighty”
subjects.“The play is one of his
best works,” says Johnston.“There’s a new generationout there that hasn’t seenBrighton Beach for itself;
that’s where Gateway comesin.”
It will be Kruger’s sec-ond professional play. The Grade 10 student atVancouver College had arole in a Pound of FleshTheatre production ofMacbeth a few years agoand is involved in theatre athis school.
He says he got startedwith acting by takingclasses at an academy atGateway Theatre when hewas in Grade 5.
“I just fell in love with itand kept going,” he says.
“What I love about it is,no matter who you are orwhat you’re going throughin real life, when you’reacting you can be whoeveryou want. Some people playsports, some people dance, acting is just a way of for-getting about your life andfocusing on someone else’sproblems for a while.”
Brighton Beach Memoirsruns Oct. 7 to 23 atGateway Theatre, 6500Gilbert Rd., Richmond.

MURPHY’SLAW
Police officers will be the first to tellyou it’s necessary to put crime, particu-larly that of the violent nature, in theproper perspective. Despite the promi-nent media coverage these acts can gen-erate, they’re not, thankfully, a commonoccurrence in these parts and, in mostinstances, the victim knows the assailant, meaning the chances of something simi-lar happening to you are so slim they’revirtually non-existent.
However, when a deadly act of vio-lence occurs like it did in North Delta10 days ago, the belief that all is wellcomes crashing down around us. Whena 15-year-old girl is killed on a Saturdayafternoon in a busy park while walkingto meet friends it’s not only an unfathom-able tragedy, but it also shakes a commu-nity to its core.
The Delta police department has donea stellar job in the days following themurder of Laura Szendrei, deployingconsiderable resources to scour the scene, investigate the more than 100 tips thathave come in and to keep an emotion-ally fragile community in one piece. Butsince police can’t, at this point at least, determine whether it was a random ortargeted attack, the murder of the popularteenager continues to unnerve those whocall North Delta home.
Coming on the heels of similar, thoughnot fatal, attacks in the area earlier thisyear, it isn’t a stretch to think the mostrecent incident is an escalation of thatperpetrator’s behaviour. I don’t want tojump to any conclusions, or prompt oth-ers to do so, but there’s no denying theuncertainty surrounding the case is dis-quieting for a great many people.
It has moved Mayor Lois Jackson toorder the wooded area in Mackie Park, the site of the murder, to be thinned outand to request that similarly dense areasin other parks, including those in SouthDelta, be pruned in order to improvevisibility and provide a greater sense ofsecurity.
How an innocent 15-year-old canbe bludgeoned to death in broad day-light in suburbia has attracted attentionfrom across the country for the appar-ent randomness of the attack. It’s sounusual, and disconcerting, that mediaoutlets from as far away as Toronto andMontreal have felt compelled to coverthe story.
It’s clear this murder has struck achord, sending shockwaves of grief, repugnance and fear throughout NorthDelta and beyond. The apprehension ofwhoever committed this unspeakable actcan’t come soon enough — for Laura’sfamily and friends as well as the commu-nity as a whole.

I wasn’t involved in the anti-HST petition drive, but I certainlyappreciated the efforts of thosewho were. However, the question Ioften asked when the subject arosewas, “What’s the end game?” Toget rid of the HST? OK. To starta tax revolt? Even better. To over-throw the Liberals? Hmm, let’sthink twice.
Well, it seems apparent nowthe end game is the ousting of theLiberal party. Despite a prom-ised referendum on the HST, BillVander Zalm is gearing up forsome targeted recall campaignsand Chris Delaney has started theB.C. First Party. Meanwhile, CaroleJames is out making campaign-style speeches in which she’s tryingto reinvent herself as a tough-as-nails cowboy in a flank steak pant-suit. Hmm.
No matter how you slice it, ifZalm and Co. are successful theoutcome will be an NDP govern-ment in B.C. Is that really what wewant? More to the point, wouldthings really have played out differ-ently under an NDP government?
Pretend that the James’ NDPwon the election in 2005. Let’salso assume James had imple-mented all the new programs andall the spending increases she hasdemanded of the Liberals in hertime as opposition leader, includinga wide-reaching stimulus package. We’ll also assume she wouldn’thave instituted any spending cuts, given her outcry when the Liberalsstopped handing out free firewoodat campsites.
So, we find Premier CaroleJames in 2009 with a multi-billiondollar deficit and the feds knock-ing at her door with $1.6 billionin hand and a team of economistssinging the praises of the HST.What do you think James wouldhave done? Closed the door orreacted like an audience memberon an Oprah giveaway show? Ithink the latter.
Some will suggest that, unlikeCampbell, James would have beenupfront about implementing the
HST, but I don’t buy it. Betweenthe recession and a crippling bud-get deficit, James would have beenfacing a tough election in 2009.I seriously doubt she would havecommitted political suicide (thushanding the reins of power to theLiberals) by announcing a majortax shift leading up to, or during,an election campaign.
Whether it’s James or GordonCampbell, however the equationalways results in the HST, exceptwith James we also get a worseeconomy, larger annual deficits andeven higher taxes. The dilemma isthe Liberals truly need a good kickin the butt ... and an extended soakin a tub full of Purell.
So, choosing between them andthe NDP is like choosing betweenHodgkin’s disease and lung can-cer. Neither is desirable, but youhave a better chance of survivingHodgkin’s.
Of course, we’re just onlookersto this game of MLA Survivor. We already kicked them all off theisland and are just here hangin’with the locals. The question is,how many others will do likewise?Heck, this could even lead to theGreens winning a seat somewhere.Nah, probably not.
End result of HST fight mightnot be in B.C.’s best interests

Letters to the Editor
Editor:Re: HST is good for B.C.
business, letter to the editor,Oct. 2
John Winter informs usthe HST is good for B.C.businesses. Although allbusiness owners don’t sharehis view, most agree withhim. And why wouldn’tthey?
As he says, every ship-ping receipt can now berecovered by businesses. And savings will be recov-ered on the purchase ofthings like a new stove by arestaurant, a new truck for aconstruction company or anew treadmill for your localgym.
The source from whichthese savings will be“recovered,” of course, isB.C. taxpayers. The samepeople he says are “frus-trated” by the way the HSTwas implemented (but whopresumably in his mind lovethe tax itself). They are thesame people who now paymore for the meal that res-taurant serves, more for therenovation that construc-tion company performs andmore for the fees to use thatlocal gym.
He calls the $2 billiona year tax shift from busi-nesses to us “tax reform”that will “stabilize” busi-ness and help pass on a
more competitive prov-ince to our children andgrandchildren. No mentionof lower prices or moreemployees.
Gordon Campbell prom-ised when he surprisedus with the HST that as aresult of the tax B.C. busi-nesses would lower pricesand hire over 100,000 newemployees at some unde-termined date. Winter, whorepresents these businesses, doesn’t go that far. I wonderwhy?
Campbell has neverfailed to deliver on a prom-ise before.
Has he?Lew Edwardson

OWL foundingdirector Bev Day (left) said the old seating area, which was used by guests touring the shelter, imploded a few years ago and thesociety was unable to have a new one constructed due to funding cuts. Day said OWL, a non-profit society that rehabilitates andreleases injured and orphaned birds, is currently “holding our own” when it comes to finances. She noted the local community hashelped the group with fundraisers. “It’s been fantastic how the community has come along,” she said.

This year, we are decid-edly Thanksgiving-chal-lenged.
And no, that’s not onaccount of the centrepiece;we’ll trot out the samedried-leaf arrangement wehave in years past. It’s notbecause of the pumpkinpie; my mother will do herusual thing and whip up herlovely creation.
It’s all about dinnerguests. The ones my hus-band’s inclined to invite. The ones who don’t eatturkey.
“They’re vegetarian,” myhusband reminded me. “Soif they can make it, we’llhave to serve somethingelse this year.”
He offered no sugges-tions.
“No turkey?” I asked.“What’s Thanksgiving ifyou take away the turkey?”
The husband sighed.“We have to respect their
dietary preferences,” he
informed me. “We will haveto come up with somethingelse. That is, if they cancome.”
OK, I said.“We may want to explore
Tofurkey,” he said.I looked aghast. I had
no interest in exploringTofurkey. Tofurkey, as nearas I can guess, is some-thing that’s dressed up tolook turkey, yet made fromsomething else. Like tofu, say. Or prunes. Or radishes.
“No way I’m eatingprunes instead of turkey,”I said. “Can’t we just feedthem prunes and eat the tur-key ourselves?”
The husband ponderedthe question.
“I don’t believe so,” hesaid. “I believe they feelso passionate about theirvegetarianism, they will noteven be comfortable sittingat a table where turkey isserved.
“You know, if they canmake it.”
“OK,” I said. “And Ibelieve passionately thatpumpkin pie should betopped with whippedcream, and not with tooth-paste. But if they want todo the Colgate thing at the
table, it wouldn’t bother mein the slightest.”
The husband sighed.“You’re being silly,” he
observed. He suggestedmain-course alternatives.Like brown rice. And yams. And asparagus. And stuff-ing — minus the sausage.
“Brown rice?” I asked.“As a main course? Whowants to give thanks forbrown rice as a maincourse?”
“Vegetarians,” he said.“And turkeys, no doubt.”
OK, I said, turkeys theworld over would be thrilledto know that rice — brown, white or wild — was takingcentre stage.
Still. My mouth beganto water. Not for yams. Orradishes. Or even tooth-paste.
But for juicy, roastedturkey.
“Listen,” said my hus-band. “I know how youfeel. But let’s just give thema call.”
I promised I’d give themthe invite for dinner thisyear, and I promised we’dforgo the bird.
The meal will be servedat 3:30 a.m. Chances are, they may have plans.

The Vancouver Whitecaps ProspectsProgram has put a huge smile on the faceof Eric Swanson.
The Tsawwassen Soccer Club productwas one of 24 players from around theprovince to be selected into the Whitecapsdevelopment program. Selections wereannounced two weeks ago and the excite-ment of finding his name on the list hascapped a tremendous couple of years forthe 12-year-old.
Just two years ago, Swanson was play-ing and enjoying his soccer at the houselevel, having just missed out on a spot onthe select team for his age group.
He had developed a passion for thegame and with that passion, continued hisimprovement with both his team, and as amember of the Tsawwassen Soccer ClubAcademy, to the point where he made theselect team the next year.
After a successful year with his
Tsawwassen U12 Silverteam, coached by his motherChristine Sawnson, Erictravelled to England withfellow Tsawwassen SoccerClub players to train withPremier League outfit BoltonWanderers.
Upon his return this pastspring, he was selected to joinboth the U14 Delta Selects, and the Coastal Y-League U12squad which consists of eliteplayers from Delta, WhiteRock, Richmond, Langley, and Vancouver. He became akey performer with the U12Coastal boys and lifted hisfirst trophy as captain at theSeattle Sounders Cup this pastJuly.
With summer success
behind him, Swansontravelled up to SimonFraser University lastmonth to take part in theidentification camp forthe Whitecaps prospects. He was notified a fewdays later that he hadbeen invited into the pro-gram.
The VancouverWhitecaps Prospectsprogram is a 10-monthhigh performance devel-opment program headedup by Tsawwassen’s BartChoufour. The programis delivered in two-phases; a training phase(September to March)and a competition phase(April –July) each year.
The Prospects program provides opportu-nity for players to train and compete in ahigh performance environment and to becoached by professional Whitecaps FCstaff.
Tsawwassen Soccer Club Head Coach,Mark Rogers, echoes the praise Swansonhas received as of late.
“The technical staff for TsawwassenSoccer Club are extremely proud of Ericand his accomplishment,” said Rogers.“We use the word development frequentlyand Eric is a fine example of this. He isan absolute joy to coach, always early andeager to learn and work hard.
“I can’t tell you how many times I haveseen Eric running or playing soccer onhis own time. This passion, discipline anddedication to the game will take him along way and we are all so excited for himto get an opportunity to play and train withplayers at that level.”
Tsa soccer player makes rapid ascend to Whitecaps program
Their route to McGillUniversity had more to dowith money than wins butthat doesn’t mean the LadnerPioneers won’t be a majorthreat to win their secondsenior men’s national fieldlacrosse championship inthree years.
The Pioneers bid to repre-sent B.C. at the Ross/Victorynationals should have endedlast spring when a heart-breaking one goal defeatin the semi-finals resultedin a bronze medal finish. However, they received newlife when the two teams thatfinished ahead of them optednot to go. Ladner will fieldan even stronger line-up inMontreal — stacked withhomegrown talent.
“I really do believe wewill be the team to beat,”boldly predicted head coachGreg Rennie. “The rosterwe have put together is justas good or even better thanwhat we have gone with inthe past.”
Rennie’s optimism stemsfrom longtime friends Gary
Bining and Andrew McBrideopting to play. Bining isattending med school inMaine but is making him-self available. McBridenow lives in Calgary andis a key member of theNational Lacrosse League’sRoughnecks.
The 22-man roster alsoincludes Dane Stevens, who finished second inteam scoring with the WLABurnaby Lakers, as well asformer national junior teammember Shawn Williams. Infact, the only missing high-profile local talent is currentOhio State University stand-out Logan Schuss whosefull-ride scholarship meanshe could only be a spectator.
Rennie’s greatest chal-lenge might be be moreoff the field than on it.Montreal’s vibrant nightlifecan take its toll — especiallywith a schedule that couldsee as many as six gamescompacted into three days.
“The night life can defi-nitely be a distraction,” headmitted. “But it wasn’t aproblem (two years ago inCalgary) and the guys knowwhat they are there for.”

Devils look to rebound afterbeing shutout by Bulldogs
For a program that has been near the topof the heap for the past three years, an 0-2start to the season might be considered des-perate times.
That’s the unusual position the SouthDelta Sun Devils find themselves in duringthe early stages of the high school footballseason after an ugly 32-0 conference-open-ing loss to the John Barsby Bulldogs lastFriday in Nanaimo. With four of the sixteams in their conference qualifying forthe playoffs, the Devils are in somewhatof a must-win situation when they begin athree-game homestand Saturday against theSeaquam Seahawks (1:30 p.m.).
“The game definitely has playoff implica-tions, without a doubt,” conceded head coachRay Moon. “We really need this one to get
things turn around.”The Devils thought they had a good
game plan to deal with the Bulldogs’ sizeadvantage but fell into an early 14-0 holeand never could recover. They did manageto penetrate Barsby’s 10-yard-line five timesbut their red zone execution was atrocious— fumbling twice and turning the ball overon downs on another occasion.
The misfiring was enough for Moon andoffensive coordinator Sheldon Paris to revisitthe playbook.
“We basically have been second guess-ing ourselves about our game plan,” he said.“There were too many errors in our execu-tion. Is there too much for the kids? Are theyconfused? We are at the point where we needto simplify things.”
Tsawwassen Royals “B” team came outon the short end of an entertaining 3-2 bat-tle with the Richmond Olympics “B” squadin an early season first place showdownSunday in the Vancouver Metro SoccerLeague CAT Division at South Park.
The visitors scored twice inside the firsthalf hour and took their lead to the break. But after the interval, the Royals foughtback with a tremendous goal from MattScozzafava as he hammered home a 20-yard blast on the hour.
Colin Jones was unlucky not to scoretwice, hitting the woodwork once, andblasting another wide on a breakaway.Andrew Davis also hit the post on a 30-yard bomb that had the Richmond goal-keeper beaten. After allowing the 3-1 goal,
Ray Croin pulled one back in the 87thminute.
Despite some late pressure, Tsawwassencouldn’t find an equalizer.
Meanwhile, the Royals “A” squaddropped a 2-0 road decision to the BurnabyFury in Second Division play.
A scrambly start to the game saw theFury take a 1-0 lead but the Royals com-posed themselves and hit a crossbar andpost before the halftime whistle .
Tsawwassen took over the game in thesecond half but failed to convert numer-ous chances only to be scored on during acounter attack.
The local lads will look to reboundFriday when the Cliff Sr. Cobras visitWinskill for an 8:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Delta U16 Tier 1 Footmen fieldlacrosse team attempted to shake ‘thecloud over their heads’ Sunday at HollyPark when they played the Burnaby Devils.
Thanks to a goal by Ben Wagner in thefirst period, the Footmen were only down2-1 and when Ryan Anderson found thenet in the second, the Footmen saw them-selves trailing 3-2.
At that point Burnaby’s attack laid downthe line and erupted for nine unansweredgoals and the Footmen never recovered.Late goals in the third period by ScottMcQuarrie and John Phillips made thefinal 14-4.l
Coaches Shawn Williams and MikeVincent are looking forward to theshort Thanksgiving holiday break and thengetting back to a regular practice schedulewhere they can work out some of the kinksand get the team back to working as acohesive group.
It was also a tough outing for a short-handed U16 Tier II Footmen team as it raninto a strong Mission opponent and suf-fered its first defeat of the season, falling
10-2 at Mackie Park. The Footmen were shorthanded and
used two call-ups from the U14 team.Geordy Haller scored both goals for thehosts.
Both teams, officials and coachesobserved a moment of silence for LauraSzendrei, the North Delta teen who wasattacked in the very same park the previ-ous weekend.
The Footmen did bounce back two dayslater in the battle of Delta’s tier II teams— edging Delta #3 10-6.
The difference was the the Footmen 2sexploding for five unanswered goals toerase a 6-5 deficit and go onto victory.
Kole Harriott enjoyed an outstandingdebut for the Footmen 2s, scoring fourtimes.
Other team members include EmmitCherewyk, Jacob Faubert, Spencer Grady,Callum McDougall, Fab Mara, BrandonMoroz, Darryn Oliver, Luke Oliver, JustinPoulin, Jackson Shannon, Alex Proulx,Connor Rempel, Jamie Stewart, NigelVanDoorne and Savannah Phillips.

The Delta Ice Hawks wasted little timein getting back to their winning ways.
After seeing their six-game streaksnapped with a 3-2 loss to the Port MoodyBlack Panthers on Saturday, the Hawksreturned to the ice less than 24 hours laterand blasted the Mission Icebreakers 9-1.
The game was all but over when the visi-tors exploded for four unanswered goals in
3:49 span, highlighted by a hat trick fromCody Smith. Cody Fidgett capped a wildfirst period with 58 seconds remaining togive Delta a 6-0 cushion.
Aaron Merrick added a pair, while KodyBotterhill and John Proctor also scored.

to the test!
Here's How It Works:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill eachrow, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numberswill appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
