THESE ARE HARD TIMES FOR ENGINEERING GRADUATES.
1.5 Million Engineering Pass Outs In India Every Year, Fewer Getting Hired.
Opting for a degree in engineering would be a wise career move in India.
20-33% out of the 1.5 million engineering graduates passing out every year run the risk of not getting a job at all.
Entry-level salary is pathetically low.
“Several engineers end up working as sales executives, so there is no link between what they studied and what they do.”The IT, ITES and the manufacturing sector- are also hiring a lesser number of them than before..The IT industry in India, which grew by as much as 30% up till five years back, has slowed down to a 10.2% growth rate at present. The demand for qualified professionals in the field has understandably gone down too.
KEY CHALLENGES FACED BY COMPANIESAccording to experts, companies are adopting a cautious approach to campus
hiring. "The fact that companies will have to spend a considerable amount on the training of fresher's is a major concern. Therefore, most companies are very careful about campus hiring and do not wish to go overboard," said V. Suresh, executive vice president and national head of sales, Naukri.com.

Fresher hiring has fallen to 20 per cent from about 80 per cent earlier. 56% recruiters said that campus hiring in 2014 will be lower than that in 2013. Recruiters noted that hiring for Engineering students will decline. However,
software companies are upbeat about campus recruitment. instead of hiring fresher's, these organisations might wait for a year and hire
those with a year’s experience, at the same salary structure. Compared to the numbers hired, there is abundant talent in fields such as
engineering. Reports suggest 1.1-1.5 million pass out with engineering degrees every year, while industry’s overall intake capacity is only 0.3-0.5 million.
