The St. Francis International Center for Healthcare Ethics presents the

11th International Bioethics Conference

Dementia A Population Health Challenge: Rising Rates, Emerging Ethics

A timely topic indeed! Dementia, a rising population health challenge, currently afflicts more than 5 million adults in the U.S., and costs over $600 billion annually worldwide. With the graying of the population, both statistics are projected to increase rapidly.

As we struggle to manage this “tsunami” we will inevitably tackle ethical issues such as consent, futility, justice, and resource rationing. Join us at this conference for a robust discussion and debate over the ethics of dementia care. A distinguished faculty, both local and international, will share diverse viewpoints on the subject. The program will also feature two separate panel discussions of relevant and thought-provoking scenarios dealing with patients and their caregivers. We will also showcase scholarly poster presentations and local exhibitors. Come for a full day’s worth of practical and enjoyable learning on Friday, April 29, 2016 in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Pomaika’i Ballrooms, Dole Cannery.

We extend a special thank you to our donors and local exhibitors who help to ensure that this conference is a success.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to:

1) Discuss the economic costs of dementia care. 2) Evaluate ethical viewpoints from both the U.S. and international perspective. 3) Analyze cases of patients with early, moderate or severe dementia. 4) Describe the ethical safeguards associated with clinical trials. 5) Demonstrate ways to increase quality of life for dementia patients and their caregivers.

Continuing Education Credits For social workers: This program is approved by the National Association of Social Workers – Hawai’i Chapter (Approval # pending) for 7 Social Work continuing education contact hours.

St. Francis Kupūna Village

Program

The St. Francis Kūpuna Village in Liliha is Hawaii’s first one-stop health and wellness community for seniors. It is a place to nurture your soul, connect with acquaintances and make new friends, and find healing and rejuvenation, all in one convenient location. With a growing number of healthcare providers pining the Liliha campus, doctor visits and follow-up lab tests or x-rays will be easier than ever. Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience, which specializes in providing care to those with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, is one of the anchor partners on campus. We envision a community where seniors and their family caregivers flourish.

In late April 2015, St. Francis Healthcare System celebrated the grand opening of Phase I of the St. Francis Kūpuna Village. This included the Clarence T.C. Ching Villas, a 119-bed skilled nursing facility, operated by Ohana Pacific Management Company.

Coming soon will be an assisted living facility, senior commmunity center and a cluster of townhomes for senior independent living.
