Welcome to Demur Fashion Chronicles. Fashion and February are just two of the F words that bring me joy!

February is an exciting month because, Fashion Week kicks off in my favourite city New York, we then pick it up here in our hometown London, handing it over to Milan where the food is sweet, the men juicier and finally over to Paris, another favourite hotspot of mine with a certain je ne sais quoi.

As we follow all the fashion events taking place in these four cities, in this issue we share with you the fashion and culture of Fashion Week which we hope will bring you some joy. I also happen to be turning 18 again (for the fourth time), so I have a lot to celebrate.

This is your A/W 2015 Fashion Week handbook. If we bump into you during Fashion Week, whatever city, don't be shy, give us a kiss!

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK12 -19 FEBRUARY 2015

Nolcha Fashion WeekDemur Magazine

Last season we had the pleasure of attending to Nolcha Fashion Week New York, an independent event showcasing talented designers through their runway shows and fashion lounge exhibition. The list of attendees includes an array of press, retailers and a whole bunch of fashionable people.

Nolcha Fashion Week New York is back again this season and we are indeed buzzing with excitement. Some of the talented designers showcasing at Nolcha Fashion Week include:

Katty Xiomara – Katty who is based in Portugal created the brand Katty Xiomara with her husband in 1999. The brand continues to grow on an international level and what better to city to showcase than the city that never sleeps, New York. Katty Xiomara is for the elegant, voluptuous, poetic, idyllic and romantic woman.

Charles & Ron – This loveable pair have been going strong for 23 years, romantically and in business. Charles & Ron are self taught designers who have taken Malta and the rest of Europe by storm. The vision for the Charles & Ron label is to inspire our clients to be part of the Mediterranean lifestyle. Who wouldn’t want a part of this lifestyle hey?

Prieston – Noemi Nagy is the experimental designer creating for the Prieston label. She has been to London and Vienna with her collections, now she has arrived to New York. Noemi makes clothes for our kind of woman, confident, strong and one who likes to show her personality through fashion. This is an exciting label that we want to see grow and go far. Thanks to Nolcha Fashion Week that is about to happen.

Yvette Hass – Yvette Hass, a Sweden native is the lady behind the label Yvette Hass. It has been a long time coming for Yvette’s label. She lived and worked in Sweden and Hong Kong learning the ins and outs of fabrics, materials and production lines. The brand is based on Yvette’s own style with some Scandinavian characteristics.

Fashion Interview – Lauren Cecchi

It was a sunny day when we met the warm, fun, cool and chic Lauren Cecchi team outside the Lincoln Centre during New York Fashion Week in September last year. Since then we have kept an eye on their progress and we were only too pleased to have the brand featured in this issue. Lauren Ceechi New York is a luxury leather handbag line that strives to inspire women to make the most of every day. Made from the finest Argentinean leather and crafted in New York City’s Garment District, Lauren Cecchi New York handbags are inherently elegant. Designer Lauren Cecchi, the founder and visionary behind the brand, learned how to sew from her grandmother as a child, inspiring her to develop her own styles. Lauren took some time out of her busy schedule travelling and promoting the brand to give us a glimpse at what Lauren Ceechi New York is all about.

Lauren Cecchi

Your handbags are made in America, was this financially viable for you when you first started out or was being organic and giving back to the community more important for you?

Producing in the USA is more expensive than producing overseas, but for me it was important to manufacture right in my backyard - it’s given me a lot more control and involvement in the manufacturing process, which in return has translated into knowledge - key for a new entrepreneur like myself. I can walk just a few blocks and be at my factory, and because of that, I have a great relationship with my manufacturer. If I need something done immediately or want advice on a technical design, they are always there to lend a helping hand. Since my bags are handmade, producing close to home is most important in order to maintain quality control - every stitch is carefully considered. Above all, it’s been such an amazing experience to get to know the people making my handbags. Without them, my line wouldn’t exist, and they invest as much into the final

product and the brand as I do. I’m truly grateful for that.

Lauren Cecchi New York handbags are influenced by New York City and the women carrying them each and every day, how would you describe New York City and the women who reside there?

New York City is a whirlwind, it's fast paced and every neighborhood has it's own personality much like the women that live there. Whilst each woman in New York has a unique story, all women in New York share a drive, a passion, and a fierce attitude, which is very much reflected in LCNY handbags.

If Lauren Ceechi wasn’t a luxury handbag designer, what would she be doing right now?

I would be a luxury handbag designer, without a doubt. In the next 10 years, I plan to grow LCNY into a full lifestyle brand, but handbags will always remain my core passion.

How do you stay motivated to keep following your heart and dreams?

I listen to my family. They provide so much support, advice, and confidence that keeps me on track. I also just keep dreaming! My dream led to a sketch, that became a bag, that turned into a beloved piece in someones handbag collection.

Anna Wintour is your fashion icon, if you were to meet her today what would you say to her? I think I would be speechless! What do you say to the woman that is Fashion? -- "Hi can I get you an espresso?" "Where do you get your hair done?" "Please adopt me?” In all seriousness, I would ask for her single best piece of advice for a new designer and entrepreneur. What’s happening with Lauren Ceechi this Fashion Week Season? We will be releasing the Fall/Winter 2015 collection lookbook on Facebook and Instagram. We want our customers and fans all over the world to see our collection first, and all together. We’re also doing a fabulous meet and greet in front of Lincoln Center on Friday 13, 2014 at 3 PM and a giveaway of a bunch of NYFW Lauren Cecchi New York goodies to one lucky

winner.Last but not least, why should everyone own a Lauren Ceechi handbag? Everyone should own a Lauren Cecchi New York handbag because it's an investment piece crafted with impeccable quality and care. This bag will be in your collection for years to come, not just a season. In 50 years, having your mom pass down an LCNY handbag will be equivalent to today receiving your grandmother’s vintage Chanel.

Greenpoint Fish & Lobster is the place to be because…It has a fun and casual setting, great music, friendly and knowledgeable staff, delicious seafood selection curated by expert fishmongers that is traceable, seasonal, and caught using sustainable fishing practices with low environmental impact.

If Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co was a fashion item it would be a…tattoo. Eating in, or buying fish from Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co. is a lifestyle statement that shows you care about the quality of your food, and where it comes from.

The menu is made up of…both traditional and inventive takes on classic seafood dishes from New England as well as many different seafood cultures and regions throughout the world.

But out of everything on the menu you should try the…Lobster roll (ft. Maine lobster), fish tacos (ft. New England hake or pollock) fish sandwich (ft. daily fish, always changing), and thai green curry mussels (ft. enormous wild Cape Cod mussels).

The kind of person you are likely to meet at Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co. is a seafood lovers of all ages and demographics who care about the quality of their food, and where it comes from.

Greenpoint Fish & Lobster will be waiting to meet and greet you at 114 Nassau Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11222.

Fashionistas in New YorkWe have rounded up the places you need to be seen wining and dining at whilst in New York during Fashion Week. Jonathan of Patacon Pisao says...

Patacon Pisao is the place to be because it is Unique, flavorful, fresh, and of course delicious. Our spot sits right at the center of the Lower East Side on 139 Essex St. It is surrounded by café shops, bars, clubs, restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques. Patacon Pisao is a hub where all types of people can cross path at the same time whilst enjoying awesome Authentic Venezuelan Cuisine.

If Patacon Pisao was a fashion item it would be something like that awesome old t-shirt that you've had for years and finally decide to cut off the sleeves and wear out to a club. Our truck in Washington Heights has been a hot spot for almost 10 years, now with our new Lower East Side location (we just opened a few months ago), we've brought that familiar atmosphere down to a whole new demographic and we brought in a great local artist by the name of Joseph Meloy and really blew it out.

The menu at Patacon Pisao is made up of… authentic Venezuelan recipes. There is a little of something for everyone. If you are looking for something light yet delightful go with a grilled Arepa (cornmeal patty), if you want something crispy and delicious go with our famous Patacon (crispy plantain sandwich), and if you craving savoury and cheesy, go with our Cachapa (sweet corn crepe). Our menu is very customizable as well as vegetarian and gluten-free friendly.

But out of everything on the menu you should try the...MOST DEFIENLTY need to try our Patacon (crispy plantain sandwich). The best way to describe this bad boy, is to think of two large crispy plantain chips replacing bread in a sandwich. You can fill your Patacon with whatever you like from grilled chicken breast to double smoked bacon. It is crispy, compact, flavorful and completely out of this world good.

The kind of person you are likely to meet at Patacon Pisao is…Over the course of the day you get all kinds of people at Patacon Pisao. Two blocks to the west you've got a neighbourhood filled with young people and an endless supply of nightspots, whose patrons we are happy to serve well into the night. A few blocks to the east we have a really strong Latin population, and this is like comfort food to them. During the day we see all kinds of people, from models who are sharing an apartment with 9 other girls upstairs, to young creative types, to sneaker heads who just picked up some fresh kicks from Extra Butter (local sneaker shop) and to the doormen of local nightclubs and hotels. It really is amazing to see the diversity of the crowd.

Patacon Pisao will be waiting to meet and greet you at 202 Street, New York, between 9th and 10th Avenue, Washington Heights, NY 10034.

Behind the fashion scenesWe all fall in love with the finished product in fashion. Whether it be that bag or that editorial. There is so much that goes into that one final product. Some of the people behind fashion tell us what is involved in their work. Why is a stylist so important in the fashion world?A stylist is very important because they are an artist. They paint a picture for the fashionably challenged. They help you to not just see the clothes but to see a lifestyle. Its just like when a company hires a marketing expert to help advertise or promote their product and make people feel like they can't live without purchasing it, a stylists job is to help advertise an image.

What are your trend predictions for A/W 2015?Even though I research trend for my career, I don't like to follow them. I love to be rebellious when it comes to style and trend. I like to encourage one to be a trailblazer. Have fun with fashion and push the envelope when it comes to your style. Set your own trend and take risks. But, I must say, there is one trend that I love right now and I can forsee it continuing to evolve into the following seasons which is, more untraditional ethnic/tribal prints and patterns. I love the direction that it is going in. Another major must have trend that I also foresee is denim. It is making a huge comeback into our closets.

If you were a piece of clothing what would you be?If I was a piece of clothing I would definitely be a good bra. Lol. They

are truly hard to find... They're sort of unique and when you do find one they are full of support, they accentuate your breasts and lift your spirits. You never get rid of it even when its hanging on its last thread...lol. You can't go wrong with a good bra. The universe seems to work well when you have one and you feel invincible.

You studied Fashion Design, do you feel fashion is something you are taught or something you are born with?Fashion design is a craft and a talent. I do believe you need to be taught on how to improve your craft so you can learn how to properly execute your talent. Learning about fashion helps you to appreciate the human body and how to accentuate it with fabric. Learning the history of fashion and the basics helps you to appreciate why fashion is necessary and why it is a multi-billion dollar industry. When you have passion for it, it helps you learn how to stand out or to fit in. Some people are born with this gift and unfortunately others just wake up and say, "I will call myself a designer today", because they think fashion is only sewing two pieces of fabric together. I will soon begin teaching fashion design at the high school I attended, H.S. of Fashion Industries. Working in the industry for over 17 years has helped me to appreciate the

things that I have been taught and how necessary it is to learn the technicalities of fashion; now I want to share my experience and knowledge with the future Chanel's, Lauren's, Johnson's, McQueen's, Jacob's, Versace's, Wang's and Rousteing's, etc.

You are the Style Director of Fashion Week Brooklyn, what does that actually involve?Being the Style Director of Fashion Week Brooklyn involves styling, managing a style team and the overall vision of the show. It also involves setting up fitting schedules for the designers that will be showcasing their work, outsourcing accessory designers/vendors and being a liaison between the designers and the supporting staff; the show's producer, model and beauty coordinators, models, stylists, and makeup and hair artists. The style director must make sure that the designer's vision is properly executed, and make sure the production of the show is as smooth as possible. I mentor the H.S. students from the two schools that present in the show. I also assist with managing backstage during the show which, is another entity of its own. There is a lot that goes into producing a runway show and there are a lot of passionate people that work really hard to make a full production like this but more often than not,

it is usually the designers and the models that get recognised, so it’s really nice to be a part of this issue.

Where can we keep up and see more of your work? You can keep up with me on the major social media outlets like Facebook/EricaBStylist, Twitter/EricaBStylist, Instagram/EricaBstylist, Google+/EricaBStylist, LinkedIn/Erica Brandford, and my website TheEricaB.com. I have a lot of great projects that I am working on. As matter of fact, I am current working on a huge, major project where I am seeking creative, fashion forward individuals to be a part of it. I'm really excited so, be on the lookout for more greatness!

1. Why is a stylist so important in the fashion world? A good stylist is important for a couple of reasons. First, stylists study current and past fashion trends in order to recognize trends. Great minds tend to think alike but one designer may excel in dresses while another nails the perfect tailored trouser or jacket. Creating these collaborative looks is what a stylist gives to their audience. The second and more basic importance is that being a stylist is a lot of organizational work! While a photographer or magazine or client may have a creative vision, their job is to organize the team, location, etc. The stylist is basically the # 2 and entrusted to use their connections and fashion sense to pull or gather an array of items that will give a cohesive yet edgy, commercial, (whatever the vision is) end product. This means a lot of networking, calling in favours, visiting showrooms, and of course building a personal collection of one of a kind items. Some of my favourite looks have incorporated my own clothing ;)

2. What are your trend predictions for A/W 2015?Of course anything in the Pantone of the year Marsala, sailor and wide leg hands, disco platforms, leotards, metallics.

3.If you were a piece of clothing what would you be?A fox fur coat (sorry I know the Brits love the foxes). If I have to be politically correct I would say a pair of Pedro Garcia Petal Sandals. I went insane and had to get them the day they landed stateside-the perfect mix of sexuality and practicality—so comfortable, I’ve been wearing them all winter with tights!

4. Where are your got to shops for your styling work?Lie Sang Bong, Jordan Louis, My closet, Pono by Joan Goodman (jewellery), Viktor Luna, United Nude, Lia Kes

5. If you were not a stylist what would you be doing instead? Pretty much what I’m doing now. I co-run an apparel manufacturing company with a designer friend-we produce clothing for designers in Asia. As of now we travel constantly working with clients from maternity to collegiate! The styling I’m doing these days is mostly my own marketing campaigns although I try to do some editorials and music videos etc as often as possible.Otherwise I am an artist’s muse.

New York City really is the place to be. The food, the music, the fashion, everything in New York shines bright in our books. You may find yourself with some free time during fashion week, between all the glamorous shows and A-Z list parties, take some time out and roam around these cool shops in New York.

NYC

The Strand

828 Broadway & 12th Street, New York, NY 10003 Walk down and around this long stretch of books, a whole 18 miles of it. The exciting thing about this book store it the fact that the books are not organised in any category, they are just everywhere. This allows you an opportunity to explore more books in the store and perhaps stumble upon something you wouldn’t have otherwise picked it up. For the artistic person in you there is a section upstairs reserved just for books of art. Pop down “The Strand”, the Mecca of books.

Oak

28 Bond Street, New York, NY 10012This is a super cool fashion boutique for all the cool cats in New York. Oak sells quirky pieces as well as designer brands from the likes of Jeffrey Campbell and Alexander Wang. The store also sells clothes from their own brand A.OK. When we visited the store, the staff seemed like happy little helpful cherubs, which obviously makes us want to come back again next time we are in town.

Fiorentini + Baker

54 Mercer St, New York, NY 10013This quaint furniture and shoe shop co owned by British Deborah Baker features endearing edgy shoes. The shoes are made with vintage fabrics and vegetable dyed leather. As for the furniture stock which rotates every season, it takes you back to the 50’s era. If shoes are not your cup of tea, (doubt you mean it), Fiorentini Baker also serve a side dish of leather belts and leather jackets.

Book Marc

400 Bleecker Street, New York, NY 10014Your favourite fashion designer Marc Jacobs has a dainty bookshop in New York which you definitely need to go and check out. Book Marc stocks great fashionable, art books and fashionable gifts and stationery. Stop by and pick up a souvenir for the fashionista back home.

Record Grouch

986 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11222This really is a pleasant place to be despite the name, don’t let hat put you off. This record store co-owned by Doug Pressman harbours second hand LP Vinyl records which are hard to find these days. For a music lover visiting New York this will definitely be the place you will need to stop by before you leave.

Mikky Ekko first caught my attention with his collaboration with Rihanna on their single “Stay”. When I then saw him perform at the Grammys in 2013, I was blown away and I knew straight away as a lover of good music, I needed more of Mikky Ekko in my life. I was only too pleased when I heard he could fit in an interview in between his 7am morning runs and studio sessions.

So Mikky are you a fitness freak at all? Yea for sure. I mean it’s the only way I can stay sane and keep from blowing up.

Well we all need something like that. Congratulations on your new album. How has it been promoting it and getting it out to people? It’s been a blast really because it’s my first time doing this. I am so excited about this album. I have worked with some of the best producers and best writers in the world. Every name on that album, I am proud to say I know these people.

Were you worried at all about what people were going to say about your debut album, considering the success of “Stay”?I worked so hard to make an album that was diverse. Every song on that album reflects who I am and I can stand by each song and defend it if I have to because I didn’t have to compromise myself for anyone or anything, this is all me. That’s why it has taken so long because I have made an album I truly believe in. There was such a huge pressure to put out an album after “Stay” and I wasn’t going to put out an album just as an artistic statement that I couldn’t back up.

How long did it take you to make this album?About 2 and a half years…

Is that why it’s called “TIME”?That is the irony of it. Here is the thing, I was scheduled to put this album out ages ago and I asked my label to give me more time because I knew I wanted to write one more song for the album. They agreed and within three months I wrote five songs which all made it on to the album and one of them was the album title “TIME”. I think it was worth the wait and I am so grateful to my label for believing in me.

Is there another collaboration in the pipeline with Rihanna? There is some talk of doing something but at the moment like with my album, I thought of collaborating on some of my songs, but I wanted this album to be a statement for me. As far as things go with Rih I don’t like to talk about things until they are fully confirmed and out there.

What is the album about, we know it’s called “TIME” but what are you hoping we can take away from it?I just want to empower people to be themselves. I have a mentor who once said to me “You can’t get what you haven’t been given” and I want people who listen to my album and know that I am giving them my all. Anyone who loves this album will love everything I do for the rest of my life.

WAnd of course your label having waited two years for an album from you what was their reaction? They have been really supportive. Admittedly I have been an ass about a lot of things and I don’t mind putting my foot down on some things. When I joined the label, I asked them to push me to be the best artist I could be and indeed they have. They have given me that room and I have pushed back and it has been a good relationship I like to think.

What was it like moving around America’s deep south.I grew up in a church so I was always around music and I learnt that people created music reverently and that has affected the way I think about music. I really like to find music that speaks to me on a spiritual level. As I moved around a lot I had to learn to find a way to make friends and that’s why I like to work with so many people. I invest in people and treat them like family.

You are performing to a big audience in February in New York, do you still get nervous?I don’t get nervous anymore after performing at the Grammys, I just get excited. I just think how I can make this performance better, how can I connect with my people?

Would you say you are diva yet or you are still working on that?I think I have always been a diva, probably one of the reasons my album took so long but I’m like the diva of love. I behave

Mikky Ekko

Images by Steve Taylor

Page 11: Demur Fashion Chronicles

like a diva and then people realise after and say “ohh ok I can see why he was a being a diva” and I just go along with it.

Are you into fashion at all Mikky?I like to think I am but a lot of people might look at me and think no I don’t think he is. If I was a fashion item I probably would be a really good pair boots, a pair that is well worn and that you can wear with anything. What I like about a good pair of boots is that they can last you a very long time and you know exactly when you’ve got a good pair. My goal is to combine a classic pair of boots and progressiveness. That’s why I work with the producers and writers I work with, because if you write a good song and you put it with a progressive producer you cannot go wrong, you guaranteed a classic.

Last but not leastI am going on tour with Broods in March in around the US so come out and check me out there as well

PARIS FASHION WEEK4-11 MARCH 2015

Whilst in Paris why not stop by the Grevin Museum which harbours many of our loveable fashion icons. Think of a more fashionable Madame Tussauds

You will find figures of famous names in the world of fashion including Cara Delevingne, Coco Rocha, Naomi Campbell and Jean-Paul Gaultier. Designed to order by Skertzo, specially for the Grévin, brilliantly graphic mapping adds a further dose of magic for visitors to marvel at. One more reason to designate the Grévin as the very acme of Parisian entertainment. The new black and white themed background created by Dick Walsh and Julien Bertevas includes majestic examples of photographic art and a film by Ali Mahdavi, while huge mirrors multiply into infinity the Hall of Columns. This artistic and resolutely modern decor underlines the unique timelessness of Paris fashion.

The Hall of Columns is to be the site for a forthcoming fashion show, attended by famous people from the worlds of the cinema, entertainment and fashion. Here and there, iconic celebrities — the Marquise de Pompadour, Charlie Chaplin, Mozart — will be participating in an offbeat play on illusion, a perfect illustration of Grévin’s art of make believe.
