NAPLAN Students from Years 7 and 9 sat for the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) last week. These tests focus on the skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. Parents, students and the school now need to wait until August for the release of the results which will show individual results and also the national average. The school will then be able to use these results to cater for individual student needs. Rural and Remote Education Project Deniliquin High School is involved in a Rural and Remote Education Project with our partner primary schools. This project is looking at the transition from Stage 3 to Stage 4 and mapping students against the Literacy and Numeracy continuums. The continuums allow teachers to identify student’s skills and understandings and to plan for their individual development. Through this project it is planned for the schools to be able to share information to better support our students as they progress through primary school into Deniliquin High School. This project is being led in the high school by Robyn Richards (Head Teacher English), Meagan Rodda (Head Teacher Mathematics) and Michelle Hindriks (Head Teacher Science) who are putting a lot of time and effort into the development of the project and the process of mapping Year 7 and 9 students’ current positions on the continuums. Transition Program for Year 7 2017 begins Wednesday evening saw the beginning of our transition program for our Year 7 cohort of 2017. The evening was chaired by our Captains Sam Young and Phoebe Laing. Ms Amanda Hatton, 2017 Year 7 Advisor, welcomed the families and students to the evening before some of our current year 7 students provided an insight into their experiences of starting high school. Students and their parents/guardians were then taken for a tour of Deniliquin High School by a mixture of staff, SRC members and current Year 7 students. This gave them the opportunity to see a range of facilities that the school has to offer. We look forward to spending more time working with the students to ensure that their transition to high school in 2017 goes as smoothly as possible. School Captains to meet the Governor of NSW Sam Young and Phoebe Laing will be representing Deniliquin High School in Sydney on the 1 st June. As Captains of our school they have been invited to join school captains from around the state to meet the Governor of NSW (General David Hurley) and have a tour of Government House as well as Parliament House. This event will also provide them with the opportunity to share experiences with other school leaders. This is a fantastic opportunity for Phoebe and Sam and we look forward to hearing of their experiences when they return. Motivational Media Thursday saw Motivational media visit the school to present their high impact cinematic presentations that confront, challenge and inspire. The presentation occurs across 3 screens measuring 13 metres across. Motivational Media aims to both challenge and inspire young people to develop strategies that will enable them to reach their true potential. The program this year was titled Everyday Heroes. There were a number of stories that were presented to the students including the stories of Geoff Wilson who this year is attempting the highest manual hot air balloon flight, Lucas Merrick who told of his life struggles after he crashed into a power pole while under the influence of alcohol and drugs and Alyssa Azar who is attempting to become the youngest Australian to climb Mt Everest. The key message of the presentation was about planning for our lives and making good choices in relationship with others. It focused on the influence that we as individuals have on those around us. DEBATING This week has been a very busy week for debaters! On Monday, DHS held a NAIDOC debating workshop day, which involved presenters from the local Indigenous community as well as the presentations about the formal aspects of debating. Students gained valuable insight into the topic which they will officially debate in June, against other local schools. Thanks must go to Tracey Page, the local Land Council and Matt Daniels for their organisation and participation. On Tuesday, students in the Year 9/10 team, consisting of Zara Lindeman, Amy Rodda, Tiarna Condren and Taylah King, travelled to Albury to participate in two rounds of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. Their effort in first round, against a very strong Albury High School Year 10 team, was commended by the adjudicator. All students spoke extremely well and presented some very convincing evidence that school sport should be done away with but, unfortunately, they were defeated. In their second round, the girls had greater success; they defeated the Year 9 Albury team by arguing convincingly that athletes who take performance-enhancing drugs should be banned for life from their sport. Again, the adjudicator commended the girls on their arguments and presentation. The Year 9/10 team will participate in their final debate later this term against Finley High School.

TAS NEWS 12 Community and Family Studies The Year 12 Community and Family Studies class visited Orana on Monday 9

th May. Mrs Tenille Blake

conducted a tour, explaining how Orana meets the needs of its residents. This helped the students in their current module ‘Groups in Context’ where they are exploring The Aged as a group in our community. Thank you to Orana for allowing us to visit! 9/10 Child Studies The 9/10 Child Studies students have recently been learning about puberty. They were asked to design a learning resource for Stage 3 (Year 5 & 6) students to reflect the syllabus outcomes on the topic of puberty. I was very impressed by their efforts and the materials have been sent out to Moama Public School, Edward Public School, Deniliquin South Public School and Deniliquin North Primary School for the teachers to use as a resource. Mrs Nicole Jenkins (Head Teacher)

Year 10 Work Experience Program The time has arrived, on Monday 30

th May through

to Friday 3rd

June all Year 10 students will be embarking on the school’s annual work experience program. Students have been fantastic in getting organised and finding employers far and wide. We are now awaiting the return of all relevant paperwork and ask that students make contact with their prospective employers to ensure all forms are signed and returned as soon as possible.

Year 11 & 12 Albury/Wodonga Trip Last Friday a group of Year 11 & 12 students headed off to Albury/Wodonga with Miss Norman, Jake Parsons and Ms Sinha to explore future options. The students were given the opportunity to look at a range of facilities including, the Wodonga TAFE Motorsports facility at the Logic Centre. Then the students broke into two groups to explore the University and TAFE options that many of our past students have pursued. We visited LaTrobe and Charles Sturt University campuses, a lot smaller than some students expected! Students who attended the Wodonga TAFE and Riverina Institute were impressed with the range of courses and opportunities available. Well done to all students on their excellent representation of Deniliquin High School. Thanks go to all staff involved for another terrific opportunity for our students.

EXCITING TIMES IN INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY The Year 10 Industrial Technology Class started using the timber lathes this week. The process of turning a square piece of timber circular is not easy and the class Is looking forward to testing their skills over the next few weeks. As the students process the timber to make it round, they then attempt to create beads and hollows in the timber. It is an excellent and difficult skill to master and the class extremely enjoys the challenge.

YEAR 11 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY VISIT The Year 11 Industrial Technology – Timber class visited a local cabinet maker Bulmer’s, to learn how the industry creates kitchens. Greg Bulmer showed the students the CNC router, edger and table saw all of which improve the quality and production time of kitchens. The students found the visit very informative and enjoyed looking at how kitchens are made in a commercial setting. This visit is the basis for their next assessment task where they look at how a specific industry related to their course is run Mr Blake

NEWS FROM THE STUDENT SUPPORT OFFICER On Wednesday 6

th April, Mr Warren and I escorted

four SRC reps to the launch of the ROAR program in Deniliquin. The ROAR program aims to improve the emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people. It provides early intervention support to people up to 18, and their families, who may be showing early signs of or are at risk of developing a mental health issue. The program is based at Intereach. Referrals to the program can be made directly to the service, which is available Monday to Friday 9 – 5pm. It is not a crisis service. The phone number is 1300 488 226 or email [email protected]. Students can see Tracey or one of the school counsellors, if they would like more information about the program.

I am currently in the planning stages of two new initiatives for students at Deniliquin High School. On the 6

th June this year Deniliquin High School will

be holding the inaugural NAIDOC debating and public speaking challenge for the region. There will be over 20 primary school and high schools represented on the day. Teams will consist of aboriginal and non-aboriginal students. Mrs Richards and Ms Forner will be the adjudicators. Miss Cramer and her students will be catering for the day. I invite all interested parents and community members to come along to watch the challenge. In Term 4 this year Deniliquin High School will be holding the inaugural “Long Paddock Dramatic Festival of the Minds”. This is the first time this event has taken place in our region. "Dramatic Festival of the Minds" was developed by the Rural Adversity Mental Health - Murrumbidgee Local health district. This program has been running for several years in other locations around the Riverina and is highly successful and students have gained a lot out of it. The aim of the festival is to raise awareness of mental health. Thus helping the students to understand the impact it has on themselves, families and the community. It is open to students in Year 7 to 10 who will compose and participate in a performance of up to 10 minutes

duration with a youth mental health focus. This can include drama, dance, music/song, poetry/monologue or other mediums. Each school group will work closely with the school’s teacher/s, the school counsellor, the Dramatic Minds Festival Coordinator and a Mental Health Consultant. The culmination of the event will be in Term 4 (Mental Health Month) where all the schools get to perform/present their piece to judges and an audience. This is will be fantastic opportunity for our students to understand more about mental health and a way for the students to show case their talents. Tracey Page
